He said he was doing me a favor as no one else would even see my vehicle for a week. At that point the phone got silent and I called back thinking I had bad service. Well, I'm pretty sure he hung up on me because when I called back, I told him we got cut off and I heard a heavy sigh. He told me he can't keep running to the phone. Summary: Best experience I've ever had with a mechanic, period. Save yourself some stress, time, and money - skip the places like Goodyear and come see Mike. Long Story: I've had trouble with my cars ever since moving to Mammoth Lakes. On the day I decided to move up from San Diego,Christmas Eve 2015, my 5th gear and reverse decided to go out while I was driving the 395. Soon after my side view mirror was knocked off in my parking lot, the vehicle slid into a curb popping a tire, and the brakes decided to give up. I had little at the time and naturally didn't think I could afford a fix, so the car ended up sitting. A family member heard of my predicament and gave me one of their old cars that seemed to be in good shape to get me mobile again, and all was well - until a few weeks later when it too wouldn't even start. I took Car #2 to Goodyear in Mammoth hoping it would be an easy fix - not the case. $2,000 and 2 months of them letting the car sit with little attention and the windows down (in bear season) were the price I paid after receiving an initial quote of half that amount. Meanwhile I went in every week to check up, only to be told by their clerk Chuck that their mechanic hadn't had time or that they hadn't sent a part out to be fixed yet. He barely even registered who I was, and when it came time to pay despite having multiple discussions about the Triple A discount they are supposed to provide he tried to stiff me before changing the price by an arbitrary number. Moral: Goodyear doesn't care. You are nothing more than a wallet they will open when and how they please. Fast forward to Alpine Garage. As winter hit Car# 2 once again decided to have issues. The 5th and reverse on this vehicle, too, decided to give out only to be joined by the 1st and 2nd. The engine was revving to 4500rpm in idle and auto accelerating. It was hit by a plow driver that was 'trying to be helpful.' The power steering was making noise. I honestly thought I would be better off just trashing it, but first I wanted to see what my options were. I vowed never to go to Goodyear again, asked for recommendations from people i trusted, and found Mike. Mike is a legend. Despite the fact that he hadn't gotten much sleep due to dealing with the 12 feet of water draining into his shop, the remnants of the 20 feet of snow we received in January, he was friendly, receptive and seemed to actually give a shit, He listened to the issues, immediately thought of potential solutions to the problems and encouraged me to bring the vehicle in. When I brought the car in, he fixed the revving issue within the day, doing work on it in his down time in between other cars. Within a week the gears were working and the car was road worthy again. Mike actually even made the effort to charge me a small fraction of what I had paid at Goodyear. The difference in service quality was astounding. It is entirely thanks to Alpine Garage I am actually free and mobile again after months of feeling trapped in one of the harshest winters Mammoth Lakes has ever seen. Mike is THE man! I had my Jeep towed to the shop after it had overheated in Lee Vinning the evening before. Being a holiday weekend (new years) this was the 3rd auto shop I had visited to find room for my vehicle. Car overheated late night on the 4th of July. Called Mike on the 5th at 8am and asked if I could drop off the car for him to check out as I was planning on leaving in the late morning and if it was a small fix we could get out of town with my car. Radiator was blown, so unfortunately that was not the case. Was very thankful that he took a look at it before heading out of town (had a ride back with some friends). Went up the following week to pick up the car (parts had to come down from Reno), nearly a month later it runs great and the price was very reasonable, even considering it is a resort town and used real Nissan parts. My Hyundai suddenly broke down on our way into Mammoth. After having the car towed to the condo, Mike came over at 8am to check out the car. The car wouldn't start, so we had AAA tow it to Mike at Alpine Garage. From the moment Mike arrived, I knew I had the right guy. He not only came to me to try to try to diagnose the problem, but ended up signing off on the car being towed into him (while I was on the mountain). He called me just a couple of hours later to let me know that the engine was shot. He told me to call Hyundai and have them arrange towing to the dealer, as the engine was still under warranty. Hyundai sent a tow truck and I never even went to the garage. I was able to head up to the mountain and still enjoy our snowboarding trip knowing that Mike was there to meet to tow truck. If it wasn't for Mike, I would have missed out on the majority of the ski trip, dealing with waiting around on towing. He was honest, straightforward and told me what to do next, once he determined that it was a power-train issue (instead of trying to fix it himself, possibly negating the warranty). While driving up to Mammoth from San Diego my engine felt as if it were misfiring. I was referred to Mike at Alpine Garage by a clerk at NAPA Auto Parts across the street. Mike asked me to come in the following morning at 7:30 to check out the car. He promptly arrived at 7:30 and immediate plugged the car into his diagnostic computer. He noted that nothing came up on his computer and thus there was nothing wrong that would lead to a breakdown. He recommended a treatment of Tecron which I later purchased at NAPA, sent me on my way and didn't charge me for my diagnostic. His recommendation solved the problem and I was able to drive home without issue. Mike easily could have recommended expensive service and diagnostic as I had no other recourse and instead provided me with a simple fix. Yesterday I woke up anticipating a great day in the snow. My car's battery was dead. My Subaru Roadside Assistance called another towing company in town and I never heard from them. This morning Subaru called back and said Mike from Alpine Garage would be right up. He was great. He had long jumper cables that reached to the front of my garage and he got my car started right away. I'm way up high in Mammoth and there was a huge snowstorm last night. He drove through at least 18 inches of snow to rescue my car. What a trooper! We are more than thrilled with our experience with Mike at Alpine Garage. We were visiting Mammoth this summer and we had a problem with our radiator hose. We had planned to drive home that day so Mike got us in right away and finished the repair within just a couple of hours. He was very sensitive to the fact that we needed to get on the road which we really appreciated. The cost of the repair was very fair and he did a great job because we made it home (over 350 miles) without a problem. It was Christmas Eve day when we arrived in Mammoth and the radiator on my Jeep Cherokee exploded. The power steering pump was also damaged. I had the car towed to Alpine Garage and Mike had it torn apart within 3 hours and ordered the parts which would arrive 5 days later, which included Christmas and a Sunday. I was happy that it could occur even that quickly. Our return to Orange County would have to be extended by a day to wait for the car. When the parts arrived on the fifth day, Mike had us ready to go by noon just as hoped for. He knew I was nervous to drive the 6 hours home and could have taken advantage of my lack of knowledge and situation. I was in town last month with my family. My fuel pump went out on Wednesday afternoon, the day before Thanksgiving. I called Alpine at 4:30 and as expected got the answer machine, Then Marlene picked up the phone. She took all my information and told me they could definitely fix it. An hour later, Marlene, the nicest lady you could imagine, calls me back and tells me she spoke with her son Mike and he said no problem.....I rode with the tow truck driver on Thanksgiving morning to Alpine and amazingly, Mike just happened to be there.. He fixed my truck the next morning, delaying his trip to go see his daughter. In this day and age, people like Mike and his Mom are one in a million. Turns out Marlene is his mom. His dad started the business.....They have been there fifty years. If you want to be treated in an old school way....do business with Alpine Garage. . While we were up in Mammoth skiing, our diesel SUV broke down. Our roadside assist wanted to tow the car to Reno but we wanted to try and get it fixed locally if possible. Roadside assist sent a truck out to our condo Monday night, it took over 90 minutes because it was coming from Bishop and they couldn't fix it. So Tuesday morning we searched online and found Mike at Alpine, told him what we thought the problem was. He arrived in less than 15 minutes to help! Mike helped us push the car out of the car port and he got it hooked up to his tow truck. He took it back to his garage and heated it up in the bay, cleaned out the filter and added more fuel and got it working! He called us right when he said he would with updates. Mike was super friendly, professional and honest and really took care of us! We highly recommend his services, and are thankful we found him so we could get home and not have the car towed to Reno unnecessarily. I had my vehicle towed to this shop after my brake caliper locked up on my ford f-250 at the end of January 2017. They were great turning it around in one day, however the problem they created after toping off my brake reservoir with transmission fluid is now costing me a fortune as my brake master cylinder and all my calipers have now had to be replaced. This shop is horribly careless and could have killed me and my family with such dangerous costly mistake. I will never use them again and will warn all I can to beware of this shop.
