We were in Kirkwood doing the dreaded Back to School shopping. The last thing on our list was a backpack. I HATE backpack shopping. Trying to find one that can handle 30-40 pound load of books throughout the school year is maddening unless you want to spend the whole budget on one item. I was looking at Yelp on my phone and found The Alpine Shop. Just for fun, I called and inquired about backpacks. The person that answered was extremely helpful, naming the various brands and price ranges.....then she said CLEARANCE! We found a decent NorthFace for half of what we were planning (hoping) to spend. Even if we paid full retail the quality is much better than what we had found anywhere else, and would not bust the budget. We will absolutely shop there more often. read more

Every time I go here I have to lock my debit card in a safe! I spend hours of my time just walking around the Alpine Shop in Kirkwood. I don't even have to purchase anything. I can just walk around and drool. I know several people that work at this store from paddling the local river races and they are always friendly and wanting to chitchat about life. Everyone here is always happy. It has to be all of the sun shine outdoors people get. I do find that some of their stuff can be a bit over priced but they are comparable on most goods. The store is well stocked and I highly recommend going to their twice a year Swap Meet. You can really score some high quality goods for super cheap. read more

The Alpine Shop is a heaven for those who love the outdoors! It doesn't matter what sport, you can find it here. And if you can't find it yourself, there's someone there ready and willing to help. Our most recent visit here was to have my husband try on a pair of ski boots before we hit slopes of Colorado. The sales person wasn't too enthusiastic with us once he found out we weren't going to actually buy the equipment. I had to explain it a few times and how it would be silly to purchase it if he doesn't like the sport in the long run. I had to promise him that if he likes it, we'd come back and buy from him before he'd allow my hubby to try on. Needless to say that was frustrating because every other time I've come in to try something before using/buying, I've had no problems doing so. He did get to try on and found something to his liking for the future if need be. We explored the shop a bit more, eyeing a few more things for our trip and planning a future return before we hit the slopes. Love the place, love the gear, can't wait to get outdoors! read more

Along with being all around great, they have a amazing staff that is there to help you with you buying decisions. Alpine Shop has a long history of providing premium outdoor equipment and clothes for all your outdoor needs. They really "do what they sell", and they love what they do, so talking to the staff is a great bonus to the buying experience. I thoroughly enjoyed worked there part-time for 5 years and still always enjoy this slice of Colorado mountain experience. It just feels right, not like REI or the other big box stores. This shop is what every community needs. They are socially conscious raising funds and awareness for local causes. Any store that has beer at events once in a while is always at the top of my places to shop. It's not just for athletes or hard core adventure seekers. I get the kids school backpacks here. They last a long time and the kids like the name brands. Large selection of top quality sports products. I like getting a comfortable North Face tee at a fair price from a local store instead of a chain market. I have gotten great advice on products I was just interested in. I've never felt pressured to buy anything. Variety of products for biking, hiking or floating. Free demos of kayak every year also at Creve Coeur lake. Friendly knowledgeable staff and did I mention they sometimes have beer or wine. read more

Two stars because I truly love the paddling staff up there. A bunch of very knowledgeable guys. Generally very friendly too. I walked in today looking to check on the status of a special order that he's taking them more than five months to get in. I did not have a mask as I am on the exclusion list and not required to do so under the Americans with disabilities act. It is a real physical problem for me to wear one and it is illegal for anyone to pressure me into doing so and to even ask me why I can't wear a mask. When confronted about my lack of a mask very conversationally I replied it's OK I'm on the exclusion list I've had several asthma attacks in the last week alone with the pollen in the air. Gentleman was polite but firm and said I'm sorry we require everyone to wear a mask and I said well I really can't wear one another employee, A female now, interjected very rudely and started yelling at me about how I was lying about the ADA. About how her stores rules trump federal law. I tried to explain very calmly to her what the issue was and she just kept yelling over me. At this point I was ready for a return instead of just checking on the status of my order. Rather than deal with calling the police myself (I only had ten-fifteen minutes in my schedule for this) I accepted a mask so I could get my return on a 2500 dollar kayak. For literally a few yearsnow I have been looking forward to supporting this company in a major way because I really love locally owned businesses. I have been saving to buy another boat from them that was also going to be a couple thousand dollars. It is such a small niche of people prepared to spend that kind of money on a kayak or canoe. I am one of those people, and you better believe I have the money to go and waste a few hours on driving to get it from someone else. Regrettably I cannot return the other odds and ends that I have bought from them but rest assured I will happily support Jeff Bezos or any other outfitter within 5 miles to avoid this place like the plague. Again most of the staff has always been very friendly. I'm simply not prepared to be treated this way Over a bodily function that I have no control over. I almost forgot! I called Jackson kayak to check on the status of my order and the gentleman that I spoke to their informed me that it was absolutely ludicrous that it had been five months and I have yet to receive my kayak. He told me that they have been shipping that particular kayak very successfully for months now. While it was obvious that might hit somehow fallen through the cracks, he said it is the retailers responsibility to check on the order every couple weeks past the four week mark. This contrasts greatly with what I've been told in the store which is that Alpine shop simply receives whatever Jackson kayak ships. For whatever reason they refused to check on my order once in the last five monthsAnd as a result here we are at the beginning of the paddling season and I still do not have this ridiculously high dollar personal watercraft. read more

I was in the market for a new bicycle to keep up with my daughter and to get to the CAC for workouts. Michael, the manager, in bikes assisted me on the day I bought the bike and that Joe had shown it to me on other occasions. i wandered from bike to bike for some time before taking the leap and deciding on the Mountain Bike. The staff was patient, friendly, helpful, insightful and had the "we can get it done attitude" from the beginning. These guys are on top of their game and break down the pro's and con's of your options. There were no ADD moments when talking to the staff as they were focused on hearing about my desires and getting them accomplished and not sitting around talking to their buddies about the recent ride or other non related to customer support issue. Jake got the bike ready for me at a moment's notice as Mike and I finished up reviewing accessories to complete the purchase. Joe continued to help as well. What a great team approach! These guys work well together and it shows! I shopped this purchase hard and spent a lot of time in 'due diligence' if you will, prior to the purchase and am pleased with having purchased from The Alpine Shop. I rode my bike here to get in some exercise and bec I needed a tire cap. I love that you can walk in a place sweaty... and let's face it, probably a tad smelly too from the ride on a hot day, and no one even blinks an eye! They even hold the door for you as you roll your bike in! - on a side note I love that you can carry your bike, stroller, dog, whatever you are toting at the moment into the store. I am mainly writing my review today based on the customer service. I walked in for the first time as a "solo" customer. Worked my way to the bike accessory area and was very nicely greeted. i mentioned I was merely out for a ride and stopped in to purchase a new cap for my tire bec mine had cracked. He jumped to the back of the wall where parts are kept, and pulled out one for me and said "Here ya go! Anything else?" I asked if I needed to pay, he said, Noooo, we have a ton of those! :) It may have been a cheap small part but it made my day! This led me to ask him about cycling glasses and he let me over to their display rack and I started trying some on. He even listened to my reasoning why I needed a new pair (women/eyelash thing) I was surprised that he actually seemed engaged in my story :) ha. Anyway he stayed with me and helped me pick out a pair of glasses that suit my cycling day/night rides. I also noted on the way out they were giving away S'mores. Something about National S'more Day. Heh. In summary every time I come to the Alpine Shop I always walk out feeling great! read more

This place has better inventory than Dick's Sporting Goods. Period. Went here to get a snowboard waxed/tuned and ended up buying new ski boots, socks and a jacket too. I agree with the review that said this place makes me feel like going on an adventure!!!! Boy is this place filled with anything and everything you need to be an outdoors person!! From bikes to tents to kayaks to clothes to books. I love the giant swap events they have a few times a year! I went looking for a book I bought from them years ago - 60 hikes within 60 miles of St. Louis ... Or something along those lines. They didn't have it but I plan on returning to get a new pair of hiking boots. I am determined to do a lot of hiking this fall!!! I just got too busy this summer. Anyway, back to the alpine shop. They are fantastic and have very knowledgable staff! I don't think you can be a St. Louis native and not know about the alpine shop!!! read more

If you need a winter jacket go here. That was the reason for my last visit. The selection of winter outdoor clothes is tremendous. They also have camping supplies, bike gear, snowboard equipment... similar to what you would expect at REI. All of the equipment is top of the line, but also very expensive with brands like North Face & Marmot. I spent close to $200 on my Patagonia jacket but I really love it. I bought some hiking boots here before Christmas as a present that I didn't get a chance to use before the weather got better in early April. I found out they were oversized and uncomfortable and brought them back. I explained my plight and even though the receipt was over 90 days old they allowed me to exchange them and had a very attentive employee ensure the boots I exchanged them for would be perfect. I've always had great/friendly experiences any time I've been to the Kirkwood location. Last month, regrettably was a terrible experience. Not one but THREE staff members were rude and appeared "hurried". Good selection of outdoor gear, clothes, and accessories to motivate me away from the remote control. But I'm disappointed that increasingly their clothing/shoes/goods are made in China, which is arguably cheaper quality and hey - do we really want to support them? I don't. And won't. I've noticed that many of the clothing tags are now sporting "Made in PRC." Yes, that's China. I wish the Alpine Shop would make more of an effort to support companies that don't use Chinese labor. read more

Great selection and super friendly customer service! I stumbled upon Alpine Shop while searching for a ski jacket. There was a lot of selection considering most places had already begun phasing out winter sports gear, and the prices seemed competitive. The jacket shipped next day and arrived quickly (yay!). I tried on the jacket and having never really skied or snowboarded before, didn't really think through how many layers I'd be wearing underneath. I cut off the tags thinking everything was great. Then, before my ski trip, I tried it on over all of the layers I'd be wearing and it was *tight*. I was a little unsure what the return policy / process would be with a small company I'd never heard of before, but was pleasantly surprised. Customer service was wonderful (one of my best customer service experiences ever) - super friendly on the phone as I explained my issue and responsive via email (she sent me a copy of my packing slip right after we got off the phone). It was also refreshing to be communicating with the same person throughout as opposed to being passed from one stranger to another. I was unsure if my jacket would still be returnable w/o the tags, but they happily took it back. With the competitive prices, selection, fast shipping, and customer service, I'll definitely be looking here again the next time I need sports/outdoors gear. read more

Beware of the coat drive coupon bait and switch! If you expect to donate your coats and use the coupon on a purchase of $125 be sure that NOTHING you buy is on sale! They will not accept their own coupon unless your purchase of $125 is for FULL price items. I wanted to purchase shoes for $99 and a harness that was $99 but on sale for 30% off, dropping the harness to $69...for a total purchase of $178! They would not accept the coupon because I did not have $125 of full price merchandise. I suppose its the principal of the thing, retailers need to learn that if they are going to have a promotion with stings attached they better start communicating what those strings are up front. As a result of this experience, I will NEVER go back to the alpine shop...will buy from REI or online because they obviously do not care about about their customers or losing business. read more

The outdoor gear franchise is always a fun place to explore and purchase goods. This is a locally owned and operated store and the quality of the gear is the best in Saint Louis. Be prepared to pay for this high quality. This is not Walmart. All of the staff at Alpine Shop have proven to be friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable about their products. The store often organizes events for customers: Tuesday night bike rides, kayak trips, trail runs, etc. The store also presents classes and guest speakers to announce their place in the community and the responsibility of Missourians in the outdoors. The store is dog friendly. I am able to bring my pup into the store and she is greeted with treats and good nature from folks. The parking is great once you arrive. Driving through Kirkwood is a drag, especially if stuck behind a train. The bicycle section is larger than expected and the kayaks are always well stocked. read more

Clothes selection is always top knotch and have gotten many friends onto alpine shop by taking them w me once or talking about it. All in all, just a solid store. read more

As other reviewers have said, this is really a one-stop shop. For outdoor expeditions, you're much better off coming here than REI, Dick's, et al. The items they sell here are by-and-large high quality at a reasonable price. My first purchase here was a Marmot fleece I bought about 8 years ago and it's still going strong. read more

I remember buying my first backpack at the Alpine Shop's original location many years ago. Fast forward to more recent times, and I didn't even know where the new locations were. I had forgotten about the old Alpine Shop and fallen into the rut of being an REI customer. Thankfully I've rediscovered just how great this place really is as I prepare for my next big adventure. The staff at the Kirkwood location will go above and beyond to help you. They really know their stuff and show a genuine interest in the products. The selection is also quite impressive and more extensive than the local REI. I'm looking forward to many future visits to Alpine Shop! read more
