As I wind down my chemotherapy, the comprehensive cancer center staff and clinicians have been thoughtful and kind. Us patients really don't want to be here, but the difficult procedures and pathways are delivered with the utmost care. The Psychiatric acute treatment of our daughter by ECT at Herrick Hospital should be categorized more than a malpractice. This is what happened. There is a medically known requirement for neurological assessments of patients, such as our daughter, with the previous history of syncope falls and hematoma that was established in order to avoid/prevent potential complications of the ECT treatment. This requirement, posted on both Mayo and Cleveland Clinics sites was firmly requested by us parents. It was rejected/ignored by the ECT treatment psychiatrist. As one may expect the blood clothes that are present can move if exposed to electric field and can produced brain swelling and other forms of electrical brain damage. In our daughter's case we have seen severe allergic reaction , very serious Urine incontinence and worsening of her mental health. It has completely erased her memory and produced reconstructed memories. Not only this but additionally she got a covid at the unit and was negligently released from the hospital while having covid and without informing us as her parents. we as parents have reported to the stuff an attending psychiatrist several times that our daughter is coughing but no action was taken. To our surprise the well known and seen delay in the ECT caused allergy of our daughter was tried to be presented as being caused by something else. In addition her current urinary incontinence was falsely presented in her after visit summary as has being already present when she was accepted to the unit for the treatment . read more

I'm writing to share a concern about my recent experience with the main operator at Alta Bates Herrick Campus Medical Center. The operator was very rude, and her tone and attitude were not pleasant at all. When people call the hospital, it's usually because they're already going through a difficult time, especially when a loved one is admitted. The last thing anyone needs is to be spoken to in a harsh or unkind manner. It's important for staff, especially those who are the first point of contact, to show compassion and professionalism. Unfortunately, this experience made me feel unwelcome and added unnecessary stress to an already hard situation. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used to improve patient and family interactions moving forward. read more

The psych ward here is truly top notch. It's not perfect, but what is? The vast majority of the staff are very attentive and caring. I don't have anywhere to compare this place too but if I ever needed to be hospitalized again I will only be going here. Highly recommend. read more

Horrible service in emergency room, sitting for many hours in a cold room. No Pain killer, nothing. Finally after 3 hours of waiting for X-rays/CT scan we left and the main thing they wanted was a release of liability signed. We went to Marin General ER the next day when I was still in pain and everyone was great and they took care of me right away. I'll never go to Alta Bates again. read more

My recent experience with Summit Hospital was that the Emergency Department was quite good but you really don't want to be put into the hospital there. It's a strange place that is obviously trying to save money, particularly by cutting down on the quality of the nursing staff. Some of the doctors seem well qualified, although it seemed that all of them didn't take the time to read any case history, but the overall environment is not conducive to people getting better. Next time I'll make sure I wind up at UCSF. A big factor of the problems of hospitals like Summit is the deteriorating quality common to many community hospitals because of their acquisition in private equity schemes. These schemes inevitably result in a decline of service because of the shrinking operating budgets. It's another example of the sad state of the American health system. read more

I was however, able to tell him how angry I was at Alta Bates for denying him one of his last meals. Very bad experience at this place of Infusion and cancer center. They don't even monitor you, I had to wait in tell they called me late then my appointment. I had experience bad side effects. They don't even monitor you have the infusion etc. in 1 hour or less I was out of there! The parking is a problem there, it took me awhile to park I had to wait tell someone left. I am not parking far and walking . I don't want anyone to breaking into my car, I am not parking on the street. They don't even have a hospital parking lot. Pathetic place. Somewhere in the annuals of Alta Bates Summit Herrick Campus laying between the informal " No Admit" list and the staff opinions from which legends are made is the Spector of my soul..from 1998 through 2024..I must have racked up some frequent flyer miles by niw . But really the benefit I included was age and experience which I want to share ,particularly to parents of patients to help make decisions about your relatives treatment. The current models and practices are a FAR cry from where I found myself in 1997.To honor both myself and other victims of the old model,it deserves recalling that Herrick was primitive,cruel,punitive,and the essence of what is meant by pathologizing I was assaulted by a health care flor staff who ripped a shirt off me before she threw me in a shower and one need not wonder,the shower was equally assaultive. I was in a wheelchair for a decade with a trauma based conversion disorder.Despite the well meaning efforts of Jane Hagstrom ,a great advocate viaing for sainthood, the staff she oversaw were often rogues ..some educated and some painfully uneducated bullies who were drawn to the one field where the dehumanization .. invalidation, devaluation,and delegitimization..were the norm,from the field that brought us Eugenics,patients were treated as an inferior,defective albeit willfully deviant group,a degradation to the healthy and an open invitation to the various forms of Narcissistic Abuse. Over the years,slowly,the more Incompetent and cruel staff were let go or reassigned.I recall Joseph and Cameron and Mark ,a charge nurse now relegated to psych intake as among the unkind and unethical Staff like Gail and Kriss Anne wre hired to infuse actual human contact and psycho education and by their being present demonstrate welcoming and tolerant orientations. As archaic models wre replaced along with younger doctors like Matthew Fitzpatrick and now Di Giovanni,the concepts of containment and reprogramming begin to give way to Trauma Informed Care that is actually transactional. As it turns out the more you try to pedagogically approach illness, distress,distortions as wrongs to be righted the more the patients feels attacked and resists and resents and suffers worse sx in a state of fight or flight. Now the new approach is non confrontational,offers massive affirmations aimed to get patients to calm down,cooperate and align with themselves and the mileu. To his is far smarter and less abusive,if course,but the realistic component of actual engagement between personalities is lost. While modifying styles to each condition or state,Herrick can still bring a level of engagement that maturely addresses each person.Patients are not babies and while extreme care is given,by some staff,to vulnerability,their is a core person who is not being addressed. Since trauma based personality disorders are overrepresented in acute settings, the Medical Directors really ought to incorporate advanced models in individual and group like Mentalzation in practice forms designed for intake. Also,a process group cannot mean a discursive free for all as Gillian is presently running his groups on 4East A ..it's discombobulating and poor modelling to not have structure,good boundaries and an apparent model to focus a group and make it meaningful.Hevis kind and smart but he needs to pick a framework and stick to it Do not throw out structure and the sort of integration it can bring. towards an outpatient plan that does not include lifelong recidivism If you are looking for a somewhat successful stabilization unit,Herrick has improved to the point where you are likely to get that,but with all tje resources of this "not for profit" more intentional,aim oriented treatment should be incorporated Be super careful who you allow to be the treating MD. Here is a good MD short list; Dr Fitzpatrick,Dr Di Giovanni,Dr Arnold,Dr Baldwin.Dr Epstein,Dr Fischer. There is within psych intake some super heroes,present and retired. Among them Margot Liebermann,Nancy Macquire,and the famously ideal driven Dr Joseph Tangora. You are like to get a very good intake experience as most are psychologists who ate actually super intelligent insightful and kind. It would be best to place talent like that right on the unit in the form of individual therapists and group therapy leaders,but coughing up the money is not what Sutter is known for. I would have given a 4 but it's not there yet and I can t speak currently for units I haven't seen in over 5 years. I will say that as the world is in chaos and upheaval,despite an encroaching moral relativism destroying our world generally,there is this 1950 to Late 1970s culture owing,in part to the older MDs that grounds and roots and provides a good social model that makes the world seem less catastrophic. read more

I was treated by the ECT team at Herrick for several years for my depression. I am now in full remission and quite happy and living a very normal life. The Herrick ECT team saved me. I would particularly like to commend the following staff for their outstanding and considerate help: Dr Arnold, Dr Fitzpatrick, the anesthesiologists, Marina, Annette and the nursing staff. The administrative staff at Herrick was also very helpful. Lastly, I would like to talk about ect (electro-convulsive therapy, ie shock therapy). ECT is very misunderstood and people have misconceptions largely caused by a movie "One flew Over the Cuckoo Nest'. I was very scared the first time, but was reassured by Drs. Arnold and Fitzpatrick and by Marina. ECT is quite different from how it was 50 years ago. Today they use a very small dose of electricity for a very brief buzz. And then you are out of the hospital quite quickly, maybe an hour or so afterwards, and feeling much better. There is really no downside to ECT. It's essentially 100% safe and it's effective for about 80% to 90% of those try it. Any way you can double check all this with Dr Arnold and Dr Fitzpatrick. I believe ECT is only offered at three hospitals in the Bay Area, and they are the very best: Stanford in Palo Alto, UCSF in San Francisco, and Alta Bates/Herrick in Berkeley. I read many of the negative comments on this site and they all seemed to be gripes about things the hospital doesn't control or one-off incidents that are actually pretty minor. Trust me, if you are suffering from depression or anxiety, the treatment is first rate. And I'm quite sure it's the same for the cancer patients and others. read more

This is about Herrick psychiatric facility: I was at this hospital twice over the span of two months this summer. Both times were absolutely miserable. The staff made rude jokes about the patients (especially me). They would say "oh you're here again, what did you do this time" and look at me with disapproval. One of the nurses named Jack made a few particularly awful comment toward me. He said "I bet you wanted to come back, on purpose" and "are you going to make this hard like last time, you know I had nightmares about you." I am so disappointed with how those nurses treated me and everyone else there. I DO NOT recommend. read more

I saw the appt on MY CHART for Agapito Bagon got Cancelled for October 5 at 2 pm for Dr Chung. I am his Caregiver. Nobody even informed us or call why will they cancel it. THAT IS NOT NICE! VERY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL! All I can say is that Dr Chung and her office team is not dependable and reliable for canceling the appt of my uncle especially he is a Cancer patient. Note: Nearly all of these negative reviews are about medical departments at Alta Bates. I'm writing to review the inpatient psychiatric facility known as Herrick. It is without a doubt the best psychiatric facility in the Bay Area. Real therapy and real compassion happens here. Other facilities "house" you temporarily. Herrick aims to help you and provide you with tools so that when you leave you are in a better place (much better) than when you came in. That means you do need to participate in their programs, even if you don't want to do that. Participating helps you to be a part of what is working, of your own treatment. The support groups hosted at Herrick Hospital are wonderful. People travel from far and wide to come to Berkeley for Herrick's support groups. As a loved one cycles in and out of Herrick mental health services (inpatient and outpatient), I appreciate the family support Herrick provides thru social workers and the support groups downstairs. I gave birth to my son here 4 years ago. I didn't really know what to expect from a hospital because I was new to motherhood and had always been in great health. I knew very little about the medical system so I held off on a review. After having my daughter elsewhere a couple of years later I really came to understand how terrible the service at Alta Bates is. Aside from one or two wonderful nurses, the staff here was passive aggressive and unprofessional. I had a c-section and nobody mentioned to me that I needed to drink a lot of water to avoid constipation. I won't tell you how that situation came out. I have several more examples. I told them that I get too loopy on painkillers and would rather not be on them. A couple days later I noticed in the fog that they had written on the whiteboard that I was on painkillers. They say that painkillers do not transfer through breast milk and that was obviously untrue, my son went from sleeping all the time when I was on opioids to suddenly having a ton of energy. I was able to switch to Ibuprofen with no trouble at all, why they couldn't have just done that in the first place is beyond me. The entire time I was super spaced out the staff judged me as a new mother. One nurse complained that my baby wasn't in a onesie- which was because the room was way too hot, which was easy to notice. A doctor came in and insisted my son be in a swaddle. She said "all babies love this" as he struggled to get out. When I wanted a shower I asked them several times for a towel and paged them repeatedly. Eventually I walked out to the front desk, where two nurses were just sitting around at the desk chatting and asked for a towel. When I was waiting for the c-section I mentioned to the nurse that my doula was coming and she asked with a tone "you got a doula for a c-section?" I wasn't planning on a c-section. A lactation "specialist" told me that breastfeeding just wasn't my thing or something to that effect. All of the lactation staff assumed I wanted them there and were constantly prodding or grabbing at my breasts without asking. People came in and out of the room very regularly in the early morning hours when we were still sleeping. They didn't offer to come back later. Most of the time when they spoke to me the tone was that I had offended them in some way. I was a brand new mother recovering from major surgery. Rude, inappropriate, poor quality of care. Please don't give birth here. read more

Great friendly staff, free valet parking and they give wheelchairs for patients while at the facility....which is a big stress reliever for the family member coming along. A nurse violated my rights and told me I couldn't leave and he was going to 5150 me if I "keep acting this way." This hospital left me traumatized in less than 12 hours. I arrived at 5pm and voluntarily left by 1am. I inquired for their inpatient eating disorder program. Stacy the manger called a few days later, and said they were missing a psychiatric evaluation. As I was setting up that appointment I get a call from Stacy again and she says that I've been accepted into the program and they don't need that evaluation anymore. Stacy is rushing me on the phone and sounds very urgent. She tells me that I can go into the program by 2 PM the next day. I decide to go bc I don't want to lose the opportunity and arrive to the ER by 12:30pm as they said to get cleared, the next day. The ER staff is all over the place and very unorganized and I end up waiting there until 4 PM. I finally get to the facility when my boyfriend drops me off. The first thing a nurse asked me is if I've ever been to a place like this before and I said no I'm a voluntary admission. After inspection and on boarding questions, nobody gave me a tour or an introduction ever not on the phone or when I arrived. I'm there for an eating disorder and I'm gluten free but what do the nurses give me? A gluten meal. I end up eating dinner in while I'm doing so my nurse, Michelle comes up and says I'm eating in the wrong room, and I told her which group leader told me I wasn't in the right room and she said that he wouldn't know any better. Every nurse I talked to said something different. Nobody was on the same page. At 10pm a nurse comes into my room and says that she's going to be taking my phone when the nurse before said that we would be able to keep our phones even after lights out at 10 PM. I start feeling very uncomfortable and unsafe. I leave my room to find my nurse which I couldn't find so I went up to this other nurse named Jeff. I was crying and I told Jeff that I didn't feel comfortable here and I don't think this is the right fit for me and I would like to leave as a voluntary admission. Jeff tells me I can't leave and that I have to wait to see the doctor in the morning. I go back to my room and call my dad freaking out because now I felt imprisoned. I know my rights, I read the packet. I go back out to find my nurse Michelle I spot her and I start explaining why am upset and that I want to leave in this program isn't the right fit for me. She's confusing says but you're allowed to leave your hair voluntarily and I said well jeff told me I'm not allowed to. Jeff overheard and said to me, " well if you keep acting like this, then I'm going to 5150 you and then you really can't leave". This makes me hysterically burst into tears. I feel so scared, and like I'm a prisoner. My nurse Michelle talk to me in my room and says that she's going to help me get out of here but not to tell the other nurses what she's doing. 15 minutes later a new nurse Edna comes in and tries convincing me for 20 minutes that it's not safe for me to leave and that they can't let me go. I explain to her how awful my entire experience has been and insist on me leaving because I know my rights. After I told her the situation with Jeff, she questions me and asked how I know what is 5150 is. What was even weirder was that when I told her it was jeff she gave the same look on her face as if he is a problem and has been a problem. I told her because I'm educated and I know what a 5150 is and 5250 is. I don't know why, but they treat their patients like they don't know their own rights, and this is how they violate them just like me. I pushed back and she escalated this up to her supervisor Judy. Judy comes in to my room and doesn't try to convince me to stay. She's already on my side she just wants to get my story. I sit down with her kindly. Tell her my story. She is very confused and concerned as I'm talking to her about the neglectful treatment and my entire experience coming into this program. She tells me that she's gonna make a difference and take from what I say and apply it. I thank her for sitting down and genuinely listening to me. She gave me a list of contacts to follow up with at the hospital to file a complaint. This incident started at 11 PM and I didn't leave the hospital until 1 AM. Overall, I am deeply distraught and traumatized from my experience at this hospital. It is very disappointing that this hospital enables others to violate patients' rights. Jeff, the nurse should be questioned about what I experienced with him because I can guarantee I am not the first patient to encounter a negative experience with that man. He made me feel like I was a prisoner and denied my rights. Please do not come to this hospital. You will leave more disturbed than when you arrived. read more

I really debated writing this review because I will be including some information relating to my mental health diagnosis and treatment, but if sharing my experience helps someone else who is suffering get the treatment they deserve, it's worth it to me. I have spent time at Herrick twice in the past two and a half year for my severe deep depression with suicidal ideation and dabbling with attempts...both times on a hold initially. My first stay was 12 days, and my second stay was nearly 3 weeks. I should add that I have been hospitalized at a few other facilities throughout the years, so I feel that I have a strong perspective and comparison to draw from. The first thing that struck me as very different is the treatment I received from the staff. Sure, I was on a locked unit (4 East A, I think--the less acute adult unit), but the staff didn't treat me like a prisoner. The entire staff is caring, patient, compassionate--I almost didn't want to leave! From the psych techs, all the way thru nursing, social workers and doctors, everyone treated me with dignity and respect. A few people I'd like to mention are Beth, Denise, therapists Julian and Stacy and Peter, and Dr. Baldwin. The entire team there also allowed my husband and myself to take a very active advocacy role in planning and executing my treatment. I had a say in everything and never felt forced or pressured to partake in any treatment I did not want, including medications. On my last stay, I asked to try ECT, since my symptoms seemed quite resistant to other treatment options. I want give a shout out to the staff down there. Again like the folks upstairs, they are a caring, patient, compassionate group of people. Also, there is a rotation of doctors and anesthesiologists and all provide excellent care, and I feel completely at ease under their watch. Lastly, I don't want to leave out security and admissions! Security is always kind and smiling there at the front desk and the gal in the admissions office is helpful and kind. Not everyone's experience will be perfect; I get it. I have felt so fortunate that mine has been. The struggle is continuing with my mental health and it looks like we might finally be dialed in to a treatment plan that will work so that I don't have to return here for a stay again! But I do want to recommend that if you have a choice of where to receive mental health treatment, you choose Herrick. read more

This is regarding Herrick: The social worker there told me I should be a better role model for my son in 51/50. I guess that means I am responsible for him being autistic and suicidal. Nice. I am sorry that I was out of my mind worrying about him. He cannot communicate. He fears everything. Also, the doctors wouldn't talk to me for about a week because he is an unconserved adult. He even gave them permission to call me and I still waited a week. And what's with this talking super fast, cutting you off when you are talking, getting the wrong information, and it's somehow your fault for miscommunication? Also the social worker got our insurance wrong even though I repeated it 3 times. I finally had to have my son's dad call her. (AND THEY STILL BILLED US WRONG!) They also kept calling the wrong number. I did call the complaint number but what good did that do? They have to stick up for their employees for legal purposes. GET YOUR LOVED ONE WITH ANY KIND OF LONG TERM HEALTH PROBLEM CONSERVED OR GET POWER OF ATTORNEY!!!!!!! It will save you heartache. I am asking Herrick to not respond to this review please. If you have a referral from your family doctor to see these people you better triple check to make sure the diagnosis and procedures matches up in the referral. Because God forbid their Imaging Department will check it before you come into the appointment. Spent 2 hrs from 8:05am-10:10am in the waiting room for my father to get an ultrasound. Turns out the imaging department believe his diagnosis needs either a CT scan or MRI and not what the doctor asked for. If that's the issue, why do you not check with the referring doctor ahead of time and not during the patient's visit? You can't notify us ahead of the appointment? Anyway, while the team seemed to be relatively helpful in assisting us. A second receptionist had rotated in to relieve the first receptionist that helped us. I didn't get her name but her customer service was nothing short of being completely abysmal. You cant miss her, she's blondish-brunette middle age and has that "I want to speak to your manager" white-privileged attitude. What's ironic is she can't seem to understand she's in customer service role herself. She'll like to shift any accountability and will not sympathize on the BS that your going through. Problem solving doesn't seem to be their strong suit as they will blame your doctor for any missed information on the referral and look at you stupid like you should already know this stuff. Other than that. I'm going to try and convince my parents to give Kaiser Permenante a try. Haven't had much of an issue there since everything is a one stop shop and miscommunications are amended immediately. read more

This review is long overdue! I had ECT here from October 2016-June 2017. Note that I only had maintenance treatments from January to June 2017. Where do I start? First, the woman at the admitting desk was friendly. Sorry, I didn't get her name! Nurses were AMAZING!! Shout out to Angie, Debbie, Latonja, Billie, Marina, Carina, Romy and probably a few others I'm forgetting. They always made me feel well cared for and sometimes even pampered. Latonja in particular loved Jerome, my stuffed koala, and always gave him bandaids and sticky pads. :) Anesthesiologists were always caring and reassuring. My only issue is the doctor turnover and one of the doctors who was there. I was initially under the care of Dr. Stanger (see my review for him under Bay Psychiatric Associates) who left at the end of March. Perhaps his leaving ECT was good because he was arrogant and did not care about patients. Then, the doctor who replaced him, Dr. Fang, left at the end of June. I did see a few other doctors who were decent - Drs. Compton, Arnold and Fitzpatrick. Bottom line: amazing nurses but the doctors could be better/stay longer. Luckily, I've been a lot better since finishing treatment but if I ever needed treatment in the future, I would not hesitate to return. read more

Great program for SI/depression, however I can't say the same about the eating disorder side. They treat them like shit and over feed, if you don't complete you're sent to the cloud room (a tiny white walled room with nothing but a chair) with ensure until you finish it. I felt really bad for them. Although I was there for mental health reasons I was silently struggling with my eating disorder and ate less then 500 calories a day, no one noticed. Thank god they closed the ed unit. read more

It just happened again. After staying on the same dose of IVIG for several months my doctor *tried* to increase the dose. I received a call from the scheduling center saying they had received my doctor's fav increasing the dose. The scheduler seemed loathe to actually agree that this meant that a week later, when I was to come in, that I could actually receive the new dose. While she was actually calling me to tell me she had received the fax, she said my appointments scheduled every two weeks for the rest of the year (2019) would all have to be canceled and I would have to reschedule them all . Then she changed her mind. Once I arrived for my next appointment I found the nurse was not aware of the new dose. This was a week after I had received the phone call acknowledging the dose increase received from my doctor! As in the past, I was treated rudely when I tried to advocate for myself. A friend who was with me witnessed everything. I advocated for myself and finally someone informed the pharmacy and I got my correct dose. read more

Everybody from the security people at the front lobby to the Reception Ladies at the 1st floor waiting & check in area to the schedulers in the basement Radiology Clinic and especially the Radiation Therapists who treated me for my prescribed 28 day intensive radiation treatment were the most professional, encouraging and kindest medical professionals I have came in contact with on my journey to recovery from Stage 4 Cancer which was detected this Spring. The effects of the radiation treatment are no 'E Ticket' ride but all the Herrick Professsionals who guided me along my journey were so kind and attended to all my concerns. Test results were always available within 24 hours of the test . Any of my emails regarding my concerns or questions about side effects were answered by the end of the next day at the latest.. Even the in house pharmacy which filled my specially prescribed meds for the Cancer treatment always personally called 7 & 14 days following the filling of the prescription to check how i was doing. Just can't say enough about Herrick's Cancer Program in particular and Sutter Medical Program in general. Thank You for a second chance & giving my life back to me and to my family read more

It is obvious this place hasn't changed a bit since 2001. Rude and intrusive staff to both patient and family, very poor communication, horrifying stories that can be collaborated through others who survived this awful place, etc etc etc...and now I can finally say my peace after all these years...anyways back in 2001 my then fiance was admitted here cause of an attempted suicide. From what I gathered from her is that the staff constantly treated her very poorly and constantly yelled at her and pretty much treated her like she was in prison. Initially I didn't believe it as I thought this was her way to be let out sooner. Well I'm sorry I didn't listen to her sooner. Every time I called down there to talk to her I was rudely talked at...not talked to but talked at. Everytime I went down there it was DEMANDED of me to relinquish all potentially dangerous materials before entering the wing. You'd think the staff would've been more professional and politely asked me instead. Everytime she was about to be released the staff at Herrick always made some excuse on why they were keeping her there another day. And this kept going on and on. What started off as a week stay turned to two weeks, then three, then a month, then two months and every single time....EVERY SINGLE TIME I went to see her, she just got worse and worse and worse. She never got better, she never received the proper treatment, she and the family were never respected, I'm so sorry I let this happen by letting Alta Bates sending her to Herrick. It's now 2018 and my then fiance has long been passed away in her slumber since 2002 only a year since she left Herrick and I always wondered what, why and how. I do know one thing though...if I ever make it back to Berkeley and Oakland, I will NEVER let anyone I know ever go to Herrick. May this institution of Hell rot in Hell. RIP L.S. read more

Simple therapeutic phlebotomy. Pint of blood taken on an outpatient basis. 15 minutes with a nurse. Bill: $532 $394 after insurance. For same procedure I paid $110 for at Alameda Hospital. Same procedure I can get in the comfort of my own home from Bay Area Phlebotomy for $199. Called to ask for an accommodation, and simply got run around and stonewalled. Buh-bye Alta Bates. read more

Got treated here for lymphoma in 2005. The good: 1. Friendly staff and nurses 2. Bright, clean facilities The bad: 1. The arrogant asshole oncologist that was my doctor. He's moved onto UCSF though. Besides him, everyone else was great. I also have to confess the doc did know his stuff. And crap, I've been symptom-free for 3 years now, so I can't be too critical can I? 2. The lack of attractive nurses. Ok, so i'm totally being superficial here, but hey, it would be nice to have some eye candy while stuck on a hospital bed for several hours. :-) Not a bad place to get treated for cancer. Plenty of smiles going around, nearly everyone is considerate, and the staff is competent. Hopefully I won't have to experience any other cancer centers to compare it to. read more

I have heard horror stories from many folks across the country and of other Bay Area hospitals. My experience at the Herrick outpatient program was top notch. There was one counselor I could have done without but it was a personality thing. Security was good. Facility was clean. Patients were treated with respect. The majority of staff was professional and knowledgeable. The dude who runs the cafe is the BEST. The cafeteria is swank compared to other hospital cafeterias I have experienced. We have had two kids in their adolescent mental health program - both in patient and outpatient (PHP) - and believe that the programs were generally very positive and that the care was good. They see kids dealing with a wide range of struggles - from eating disorders to self harm and suicidal ideation - and they represent a safe place for kids with these struggles to stabilize and then work on skills and the sort of therapy and medications to support longer term recovery. They will work closely with your own support teams of doctors, therapists and involve the family in the process of supporting long-term change. The building itself is a little run down but the quality of care has been consistently strong. read more

I gave birth here and hated it the nurses were great but the doctor (dr.gentry) was horrible she made my experience bad. She wanted to argue with me in the delivery room about a review I left on yelp about her doctors office. I also had to leave before getting discharged. I was fine my baby was fine and me being a mom of 3 others I knew what I needed to do when I got home. read more

I saw a reply from Herrick Campus, Berkeley. A part of the Sutter health. Six months ago I scalded Herrick as the place of torture. They wrote back said they were sorry and I should call. I made that call this morning because that's when I saw the reply. Guess what? Nobody to talk to. That person is in a meeting and will call you later. When is later? I was in the psychiatric unit as an adolescent with depression and an eating disorder. Without bias, I can confidently say that this is the best hospital I've stayed at. The staff and nurses were firm when needed, but they were never abusive. This means the most to me. I was difficult because I am reticent and somewhat mistrusting but I was still met with compassion. I don't know whether four stars is right. I could give a five star rating. It's just that while I was in the eating disorder program, I felt quite invalidated. I sometimes got away with hiding food or leaving some things on my plate. I left thinking that I wasn't sick enough and that I ought to get worse in order to be taken seriously. That last remark could be flawed in objectivity. You don't expect me to be perfectly rational, do you? I wouldn't have stayed here! Overall, the experience here is... more than agreeable.
