Will not be coming back to Berkeley Urgent Care again. Felt ignored by the Doctor and we did not leave with what we needed most, antibiotics, even though we asked three times. They prescribed OTC remedies that did nothing. My daughter had a chronic cough and sickness for a month. We made another appointment two weeks later with her primary care doctor for an urgent sick visit since she was not healing from this ongoing cold and chronic coughing-vomiting. Castro Valley Dr. gave her antibiotics and she was better in two days. The lack of compassion for the patient and families needs is very costly with our experience with Berkeley Urgent Care. Listening to the patient is key to a successful relationship for good health and it doesn't seem to be happening in Berkeley. Another incident at Berkeley Urgent Care happened when I went in with what I thought was shingles and they sent me to the ER for an abdominal exam. The minute I arrived at the ER and went through triage, they spotted the small rash and said it was shingles instantly. Berkeley Urgent Care blew me off and sent me to the ER and cost me $6k. If you are in an emergency situation, I would REALLY recommend you just go to Alta Bates Summit Medical Ctr down the street instead. Came in here with debilitating stomach pain only to be told to leave and move myself to another hospital. In that state, the whole point of going to urgent care was because we could barely move. What is the point of naming yourself urgent care if you are not fully equipped to handle emergency situations? If the situation ended up being urgent, it could've been dangerous. :( The only plus side is that we were seen within 10 minutes. read more

They said we had 6 people ahead of my toddler and I, and let no fewer than twice that before us-- waited for 2 hours. Worse, the doctor then saw my daughter for 3 minutes and prescribed the wrong standard of care (gave drops instead of oral antibiotic for an inner ear infection as confirmed by our pediatrician). Then, when we called to get this corrected because we wouldn't be able to get to the pediatrician for another couple days, never got a call back. Lab work is really nice hear they are gentle with the blood tests and even talk to you to help distract with the test this review is just for the lab so other clinic areas might vary but this place is very convenient for UC Berkeley students. read more

I can't speak for an urgent care situation that requires imaging and diagnosis, but for a straight forward treatment such as for bad cuts, I definitely recommend this urgent care facility. We are very satisfied with the care we received. We were from out of town while visiting the Cal campus nearby when my 7 year old fell and sliced his knees open. Realizing we probably need to get stitches, Sutter Urgent Care nearby was recommended by a kind Cal staff. I called to inquire if our insurance was in-network and Sutter was able to get back to me fairly quickly, in less than 5 min, to confirm that we were in-network. My child is deathly afraid of any minor scrapes and cuts, and this was the worst cut and the most blood he's seen coming out of his body. My husband took him in when it was our turn, and I didn't hear any crying/screaming while in the waiting room with my other child. When he came out patched up and relieved, even happy, I can only assume the physician stitching him up was very accommodating and skilled. Check-in was easy, and I am very satisfied with the front desk for checking our insurance so quickly over the phone when we first called. The facility was clean and decent, no complaints. There were a few electrical outlets in the waiting room, which was helpful. We were initially given the estimate of having to wait 1.5 to 2 hours but I'm pretty sure we only waited up to 30 min before being taken in to be treated. We were also seen by a nurse at the beginning of our wait to make sure we kept the laceration from bleeding further. This was our first ever visit to an Urgent Care facility, since my husband had always preferred to use the ER, but we are now convinced Urgent Care could actually be better than the ER depending on the care we are needing at the time. Best hospital hands down! I'm not too fond of hospitals so I came in with an uneasy feeling. I had to go to urgent care because I have an ingrown toenail that became infected on top of a spider bite on my leg which also was infected. From start to finish the visit was great! Receptionist was extremely friendly, the wait wasn't long at all ! Anne , Dr. Velez , & Ben were all so welcoming, caring & sweet ! I came in for something that they couldn't help me with, and rather than charging me for a consultation they had a nurse come in and give me the news instead, so they could cancel the appointment and save me money. Of the places that I've not received care from, they're my favorite. I'm not being sarcastic! The ER I visited later that day did not afford me the same treatment. I had the same thing happened to me on 6/17 as the reviewer Claire claims below. The nurse went back and forth and was being forced by the Dr to tell me to go to emergency. I pushed back because I felt it wasn't fair since the Dr didn't even come in the room and evaluate the me. Well he finally did & scared me into going to emergency. I spent over 8 hrs at emergency only to be told I didn't need to be at emergency! In fact they kind of laughed at the fact and told me "some doctors overreact". I usually go to walk in care clinic here. That being said, I try and go as early as possible to get in line as close to number 1 as possible. When I'm able to do this, I am seen quickly. Obviously, since it's first come first served, the later you get there, the longer you wait. Someone gave me a heads up (can't remember if it was a doctor or other medical staff) to call first and see how many people are currently on the wait list. That's really helpful. I've gotten X-rays here, referrals to specialists, as well as refills for urgently needed medication that had zero refills. Bonus: they also have a great cafeteria! read more

Called to see if they booked appointments as their website was vague. They said, no - only walk-ins. OK, fine. I asked if it was an MD or NP or PA as I prefer an MD, that is, someone who actually went to medical school. They said it would be an MD. Great. When I asked for the name of the provider, the guy replied that they could not give out the name due to blah, blah, blah... That was not very user-friendly, so I called John Muir Urgent Care on San Pablo Ave. You can book appointments there, not just walk-ins. You can book online, or by phone. And you can have an online appointment or in-person. Done! I got an appointment today and no problem. They also gave me the name of the MD I'd be seeing. read more

I would not recommend this urgent care for a baby. It was the slowest urgent care I've ever been to. We waited well over 2 hours to be seen. The doctors clearly do not regularly see babies and did not give me confidence. They were not helpful at all. read more

The clinical staff is courteous and professional. My complaint has to do with Sutter's billing practices. I took myself and my daughter to be seen for flu symptoms. They saw us at the same time, in the same exam room. They billed the encounter as 2x 99204 (Office O/P, New Patient, Moderate Complexity, 45 - 59 minutes). I have three issues with this: For one, I'm not a new patient -- I've been seen at the clinic previously. Secondly, we spent less than 45 minutes being seen. And thirdly, they saw the two of us at the same time, so in actuality it was substantially less than 45 minutes per person. Sutter's rate for one 99204, so that visitors are warned, is $590. My insurance discount was $103.51, which leaves me with 2x $486.49 = $972.98 for essentially one sick visit. (I'm on an HSA-compatible HDHP, so I'm responsible for the entire amount.) I called billing right away when I saw the claim and explained that I am not a new patient. The billing rep said that since I hadn't been seen by that specific doctor before, I was considered a new patient. But when you seek walk-in care at an urgent care clinic, you don't have any control over whom you see. So why am I being charged extra to establish new care with a doctor I'm probably never going to see again? That's completely illogical. I also pointed out why I thought the 45 - 59 minutes category was excessive based on the attention we received, and the billing rep told me I was misinterpreting the code. I asked her to read me the code, and she said she didn't have access to it. I persisted, and she placed me on hold. When she got back, she said she would re-submit the bill for review -- which takes 30 to 45 days. When I asked if we could follow up on her assertion that I'm misinterpreting the American Medical Association's CPT code 99204 and read the code together, she reiterated that she was re-submitting the bill and asked if there was anything else she could help me with -- so essentially no response. I plan to complain to my insurance carrier (Anthem Blue Cross) about my experience at Sutter. However, there is a law barring insurance carriers from telling providers how to code a claim, so it's unlikely they will be able to address the matter; if they can't, then I plan to file a complaint about Sutter with the California Department of Public Health. read more

This clinic is fairly efficient at processing people and the doctor was fine. Unfortunately their billing practices are fraudulent. I saw the doctor for ~10 minutes and had a common problem (shingles). When the bill came, I was charged for a 45-60 minute visit. I complained and they adjusted it. It still came in at $447. Since then, Sutter has similarly overcharged my daughter for a medical visit. This seems to be a common fraudulent practice in the Sutter system. Go to Carbon Health instead. They have a flat rate of ~$220 for urgent care. read more

I was sent into active withdrawals, because the doctor I was scheduled with only sent a 7 days supply when I normally get a 30-60 day supply. The Doctor did not even give me a heads up that he was only sending 7 days, so I could schedule while they where on the phone taking my co-pay. I've been trying to contact someone since last week and have left two voicemails and I still I have not been able to make contact with anyone other then the general mailbox. Dr. Robert Nathaniel Eberhart was rude, dismissive, wouldn't answer questions (literally said "Anyway" after I asked a question and kept talking about smth else just to get me out). In early August, I got in a bike accident and injured my elbow. I was worried I may have broken it, so I went to urgent care to get checked. The service I received was fine. They were able to take x-rays and confirm I didn't break my elbow, which is all I wanted to know. Here's why I'm giving this place 1 star. -1 star: The base price of the appointment was $576. Unless you can cure injuries, you're never getting 5 stars from me with that as the starting price. -1 star: One of the first things I did when I arrived was give them my insurance information. During all my time waiting, they never bothered to tell me that they were not in my insurance's network, so I was going to have to pay everything out of pocket. I was transparent with them. Why couldn't they be transparent with me? -2 stars: The doctor determined I needed a sling. So before I left, an office worker entered my room and asked me to sign something that said I would pay for a sling. I asked how much it would cost. She said she didn't know. I was obviously concerned about signing a blank check, so she said it's not like it would cost "$700 or $800". Needless to say, this was WAY more than I would be willing to pay, so I said I wouldn't sign. So she frantically looked up prices online, I guess on Amazon or Google or something, and said it would be $20-$50. That price seemed reasonable, so I signed. Of course, that wasn't the true cost. It was actually $148, 3x the max she said. It's one thing to not be able to tell folks the price of a visit at the start, when you don't know what the visit will entail. It's another when you're holding a product in your hand you're trying to sell and you can't give a price. That's simply a scam. Here's the full price of the visit, so you can get a feel for how much you'd have to pay if you had to come here. Even though my insurance wouldn't pay anything for this visit, Sutter Health marked "insurance adjustments" to their prices. I don't really know what that means. She quickly grasped the big picture and was empathic when she advised me to go to the ER because of the type of testing I needed. I've had two really experiences with this facility. The first was horrific. A doctor incorrectly diagnosed me and gave me horrible care in the process. He wasn't listening to me, and was literally trying to walk out of the room as I was talking to him and trying to understand his diagnosis as it didn't seem to make sense for so many reasons. He also was quite rough when physically examining me, and caused me some pain as he was messing up this diagnosis. I had two separate opinions who confirmed that the diagnosis he made was obviously wrong, and the treatment he would have given me was incorrect. It also would have negatively affected my family moving forward. As horrible as the misdiagnosis was, the way he treated me and refused to listen was far worse. If I ever have the misfortune of seeing his face in an urgent care room, I would immediately ask for someone else. And I'm not an overly sensitive person--that is just how awful this guy was with me. The second issue I had with them was today. This clinic repeatedly kept me on hold, and then suddenly dropped the call. I had to call eight times this morning, and somehow the eighth time worked and I got a hold of them. The prior times, the call immediately would drop; would get disconnected after being on hold for a long time with wringing; disconnecting after being on hold for 10+ minutes with hold music; or dropping the call and giving me an error message that says, "this wireless number is no longer working" along with some kind of error code after, you guessed it, being on hold for a while. When I finally got a hold of someone, they told me they couldn't make a video appointment and had to walk in. I explained that this wouldn't work for me as I was traveling and needed a video appointment for some COVID treatment. She offered no options or numbers to call. Just a, "we don't do this." Sort of understandable--but also really crummy to go through the hold fiasco to not get the help I need and not have any solutions offered. It also seems reasonable that they could have just included the, "we don't make video appointments" in the automated machine that answers the phone initially. I'll see if I can find any other facility nearby that doesn't have these issues. I am too often disappointed by this operation. read more

I came in around 9:30am to do a walk in for a tb test and physical. Got called in at 10:15, they took my weight, blood pressure and sent me into room 5. I waited for the doctor to arrive; she didn't show up untill 1:15 just to do a 5-minute procedure. If I didn't HAVE to be there for work I would've lost my patience. A terrible experience! Paid the nearly $400 deposit up front only to be rudely talked down to by a condescending Dr, for an entire 5 minutes. My poor friend sat there waiting to be treated for the gaping wounds on his legs from a motorcycle accident , all the while in his underwear as the Dr threw little quips at him, complete and utter disrespect. We were completely stunned when the Dr walked out leaving the door wide open, friend with no pants on and bleeding knees. No treatment, no examination, no advice, no wound care instructions AT ALL! DO NOT GO HEAR! I went for a visit 4 days ago, I had couple of symptoms that mirror Covid-19 and they told me they are unable to exam me until I get tested. I informed them I have this awful headache that is not going away. Doctor recommended to take Tylenol and to wait for the Covid results, so I did. That night I slept less that 3 hours again. Next day I received the result, - negative- I called them and went back again. Instead of getting a full evaluation they tested me again and sent me home to wait for the result. Result was Negativ again. Requested to come for investigation, they said to do a video conference since I'm still suspect of Covid and they don't want to see me inside. Ok, I understand. I had the video consultation and from there everything got "lost in translation" I had to call them multiple times to make sure they referring me me the testing facilities I originally agreed upon with the doctor. Every time I called the stuff assured me they will take care if it but they didn't. I had to ask for a supervisor to make sure is done. Every time I called the stuff seemed lost and not able to access all the information but the assure will get done. I'm very disappointed and I don't recommend them. read more

It was easy enough to get an appointment on the same day; however, the tried to send me through the queue for people who have COVID symptoms, even though I didn't have any respiratory or cold symptoms. Thankfully, someone recognized that error before I was seen. However, the doctor I did see was very condescending and rude, did not listen to me, and did not spend more than 30 seconds doing the physical exam. We had a fantastic experience here with Dr. Zachary Landman. My daughter had an infection and was in a lot of pain. We called our one medical on call doc, who was completely unhelpful. So when we got in to see Dr. Landman we were both feeling tired and hopeless. He was so kind and immediately developed a rapport with us both. He asked about her symptoms and listened to my questions. He explained his rationale for doing a minimally invasive exam and for prescribing the medications he chose. In addition to Dr. Landman, I am also so grateful to the greeter/security staff for doing a thorough covid screen and providing us with masks. The receptionists were friendly and professional as well. I wouldn't hesitate to take my daughter here again. read more

I went here because my primary care doctor said to go to urgent care. I saw Dr. Allen Bueno del Bosque. I have never had such a bad experience with any doctor. He was condescending and rude. I have had physical symptoms for four months and am seeing specialists to diagnose them. This dr asked why I went off antidepressants and ascribed all my symptoms to anxiety. He didn't address the symptoms that brought me in. When I said I resented that reductive analysis, he said "did I say that?!" But it's all he wrote on the notes. I went to John Muir urgent care right afterwards and had a great doctor. He listened, gave good information, prescribed two medications, and tested me for infection and inflammation. Terrible experience, they would just not look at the reason I was in for. I came in because of a scary bug bite that had caused me to stop breathing and turn blue the night before. They legit tried to say I had COVID.... I work at a senior facility and get tested twice a week.... I don't have Covid.. after they tested me they brushed me out and said absolutely nothing about my breathing and the bug bite.... It's also a 400$ dollar deposit, plus anything els they might do to you. Terrible. Honestly anywhere els might be better. read more

Once again, another Sutter Urgent Care that needs to get itself together. I am negative for covid but have been experiencing a pretty nasty cough for three weeks now. After a debacle at the Oakland Sutter Walk-In Urgent Care, I tried this Sutter location earlier today. Before driving over, I looked at the website, which is nothing more than their address and phone number, and a call to their number said no appointments necessary. Nothing about what to do with my particular set of symptoms. Fine, great. So I drive over only to be told that with my symptoms I needed to call the number on the poster outside and make an appointment. Only, when I was outside there was no poster. I walked out and someone at that exact moment was just then setting it up. So, I call the number and am told they can't see me until later in the day. Several issues here: 1. Instead of having patients drive themselves all the way to their clinic AND ONLY THEN tell them if they have any sort of cough that they need to call a number on a poster outside to make an appointment is a huge disservice (bordering on disrespectful) to a sick individual who requires medical care. 2. If this IS going to be your pitiful policy, then perhaps it would be wise to put this information on your website and on your outgoing phone message. That way, you see, a sick individual won't make the drive over to your office only to be told they have to make an appointment at a later day and/or time using a completely different phone number than the one on your website. 3. If you are going to require separate appointments for respiratory ailments because, as the receptionist put it, you "don't want covid patients at your medical facility" (THAT really has me flummoxed - Scarlet Letter much??), then have the decency to staff that part of the clinic during your regular business hours. 4. Public and private restrictions have been minimalized or jettisoned all together, even the government has said the covid emergency is over. I'm all for masks and remaining vigilant, and I'm even for going back to restrictions if a new variant starts to cause havoc again, but it's time for Sutter offices to stop treating people with respiratory symptoms like they have a big huge "C" plastered on their chest. You're a medical office! You violate your oath to take care of the sick, and, quite frankly, you insult people who are simply looking for care. So...BEWARE...if you have a respiratory ailment, don't head to any of the Sutter Urgent Care facilities. They won't tell you via their website or phone message, but they won't see you. They'd rather you drive all the way to the office, and THEN tell you that essentially they consider you a leper and that you will have to make an appointment elsewhere on a later date, at a later time. And then once they send you away, you better hope beyond hope that you don't drop dead from shortness of breath or an asthma attack. I'm no Urgent Care expert (in fact, this was my first visit to such a facility) but Sutter Urgent Care seems to be doing it right. We arrived around 19:30 (they close at 20:00) on a weekday evening and were greeted immediately. We were lead back to a room by a nurse within ten minutes of turning up. Not long after that a doctor appeared, diagnosed my husband straight away, and prescribed him medicine to treat his condition (which we were able to pick up before the pharmacy closed for the evening). When it was all all said and done, we were here for significantly less than an hour. This is a clean, well-run facility with courteous and kind staff - I'd happily recommend Sutter Urgent Care in Berkeley to anyone with a minor illness or injury that can be treated outside a hospital setting (folks with serious emergencies should go to the ER). read more

I hope to leave the entire Sutter system after this simply because I would prefer to spend the time finding doctors who aren't rude, aren't trying to push through as many patients as possible, and who don't minimize my pain as "standard among millions of Americans." He also had tests run that I wasn't told about which led to more confusion about what he thought was going on and why. I learned about tests only from discharge paperwork, never discussed with me.
