I would like to rate this higher because the folks here really do try but I had a very negative experience today. And I think folks with ASD and assault trauma like me do need to read this. Admittedly the error started with me. Getting old is no fun and my memory is a swiss cheese. Nonetheless my bad for not triple checking everything. I needed to pick up some old lady meds at the pharmacy and I like an idiot forgot that I had a vape in my pocket. Again my bad. I didn't even find it when I was first trying to find metal stuff for the scan. So second time around it was like oh! and I dropped it into the box. Now at this time an ideal response without human touch would have been to say we're sorry you cannot proceed with a vape into this hospital. If you could make arrangements to store it elsewhere and come back there won't be a problem. I would have profusely apologized feeling like the idiot. I would have grabbed the material and instantly exited if I had received that response. But instead what I got was extremely offensive to me as a person with ASD and heavy trauma background. As if my only intention had been to somehow get deep into the hospital and vape up a cloud the security person in an elevated tone of voice says "You can't bring a vape in here!" Then he gets in front of me and starts pawing at me. Then he starts pawing at the rest of the stuff in the basket as if the wallet and keys belong to him and he refused to surrender the keys to me! Then his compatriots joined him all MALE. A straightforward and clear communication was all I needed and would have happily responded to as admittedly I was in the wrong. They would have gotten profuse apologies for me on the way out as I felt very foolish for forgetting that. But now I find myself in the aftermath literally not able to stop shaking as so much trauma got triggered as well as my ASD by pawing incompetent and aggressive MALES. A real turn off and a real world warning to women especially those who have similar conditions as my own. I would recommend not going alone. Bring someone with you who is big. Or don't even go through unless you see a woman at the security station. You have been warned. read more

The PCP I have is great, however, I have been messaging them, and messaging them for over a month now just to get the blood pressure medication I was prescribed by my PCP sent to my pharmacy! No one has returned my messages or the messages left by my pharmacy. My blood pressure is high again because I have been unable to get them to send my prescription to my pharmacy! This has to change! Patients can't go without their medications! I hate to leave a review like this, but this is medical neglect, and definitely not the standard of care! read more

I highly recommend Highland Hospital to anyone who has been shot, stabbed, in a severe car crash. This hospital is recognized national for ae.r.team. in addition tge wait times are backed up, because the E.R.is part of the trauma team. They get 3 shooting victims, with multiple shoot8ngs each back to back, lots of stabbings, victims of violent crimes, car accidents, etc, not just from Oaklan, but Berkley, Alameda, Walnut Creek, etc. It is the ONLY level 1 adult trauma center for the EastBay. They are also a flag ship, and "county hospital ". They are dealing with poverty to the extreme, legally, illegals, drug addicts, homelessness, because 9f where the hospital is located. They offer free services, so free healthcare takes its toll on funding staff, so wait times can be longer, just like S.F. general, San Mateo country General, etc. You have U.C.S.F s specialists and surgeons caring for you. If you dont want the top dr.s taking care of you, there is always Kaiser in Oakland.​​ read more

Look. My healthcare isn't the best. But they handle it. It can be time consuming to see the right person. It has to be booked far ahead of time. But look. I'm happy to have myself be taken care of for the things I need. Did it take literally months to have my dental work taken care of? Yes. But it was eventually taken care of and my life has been much better since then. Did it take hours of being in line on the phone, transferred, told I was talking to the wrong person. Called my health insurance and they couldn't figure it out... but eventually, after pouring enough time into it I was able to get the surgery I needed... and it all worked out. It's not the hospital I want but it's the hospital I need. read more

Care from the nurses, doctors and everyone on the floor is top notch. Precisely why the management and upper management are a joke for taking advantage of their employees. Disgusting hiring and turnover of the money makers is wasting this hospital. Apparently they can't keep managers for longer than a month or two leading to staff feeling disillusioned and apathetic. Assistant managers couldn't care less about their employees either making things worse. Jaded, sad old losers collecting a paycheck while nurses break their backs and treated as expendable. I give Dr. Lee five stars in the dental clinic as well as her assistant Anyen It is very difficult for me to go to the dentist so they are having distraction for the first time of my life. I was woke. The only thing I felt honestly was the pressure just so she explained she was very thorough about keeping me updated step-by-step, and completed the process With almost no pain. I cannot believe it. I'm so happy to say I've done it but only with Dr. Lee at Highland Hospital she was the best I've ever seen in my 50+ years of life. It's Sept 2024, and my job sent me to Highland Hospital on Kaiser business. Security entry at the main entrance requires walking thru a metal detector, possible wanding, and dumping all your stuff in a bin. On Sept 3, the guards were very nice and professional. The process is quick. They're looking for weapons, and there's an "Amnesty Dropbox" right outside. I had to go to Radiology, which is on the 3rd floor of the new building. It's a long walk from the main entrance. On the way, I walked pass the ER and a security checkpoint. You get to X-Ray, and I have to wait. The Record Clerk goes on lunch, and no one covers her desk while she's gone. A line forms, and everyone just waits. Overall, I good experience at this County hospital. I can never say anything bad about Highland because they saved my life in 1989. As always, thank you. read more

Once again I have experienced a race based issue at Highland Hospital. I had taken a seat in the waiting room of Adult Medicine and began to charge my phone. After a few minutes a patient stood over me demanding 'his' seat back. I offered the many other seats available but he insisted on my seat while another patient began to go off on my so-called 'white privilege' threatening me with a whooping. This was the 4th time I experienced this kind of thing. First it was suggested by a clinic director that I was a racist followed by a nurse suggesting the same in MyChart. Then again by a patient who added that I "must believe in reverse-racism" and last this last experience on Wednesday of this week. Too boot the same director as above went off on trump in a meeting with other clients present. Definitely inappropriate and divisive. read more

She is extremely intelligent, competent, experienced and has a caring heart. The blood flow to his vessels is back to normal and he is able to engage in his prior activities. I also would like to thank the staff and everyone who provided care to him. They were warm, compassionate, knowledgeable and we knew he was in good hands. The way you all treated my husband was disgraceful my husband is type 2 diabetic he takes 20 units daily you cut it to 3. You took all his prescribed medication one which was for anxiety, even his Lyrica, you replaced it with either very low doses or nothing at all. He now keeps collapsing due to not having any anxiety medication in his system, this was happening in the hospital Floor 8 room 11. The nurse, stepped over him when he was on the floor and said he was faking it! This isn't the last you have heard from me/us!! read more

Great hospital run by residents and nice staff! Parking is a pain in the butt but it's right before the ambulance parking. Navigation is also somewhat confusing, make sure you go to the right building and ask the staff if you need help. Don't walk away, RUN! If you have an upcoming surgery, go to San Leandro Hospital or anywhere else. Anywhere else!! It took them 7!! times to poke me under the skin to get my IV. San Leandro Hospital got it in one less than 4 days later. It's not me, it's the nurses. I woke up in a bed of urine and feces. The nurses at the nursing station which I was facing were on their phones and waved back to me that "my nurse" was "out" and would be there when she got there. Ultimately I got up, cleaned myself up and put the sheets etc in a ball and in the appropriate bin and walked. Only a security guard stopped me and said that I had to go in a wheelchair. Some discussion followed. They BROKE my front tooth even with a tooth protector and I had to have it extracted, it was broken horizontally. I have to see if another tooth can be saved next week. Nobody ALIVE would tell me where my appointment was and I was sent to the NURSES LOCKER ROOM. Through security that nobody checked and on my way through the door into surgery as I was lost, a male nurse stopped me and was shocked at how the hell I got there... Sorry for being disrespectful but this was the worst experience I've ever had with any surgery and I've had a few. I've never had ANY of these. Go to a better hospital. DO NOT let RESIDENT WON HEE CHO work on you! He damaged the nerve in my face during an extraction! At the time of the surgery he knew he was struggling because he said so! He still didnt ask for help when he could have at any time during the surgery since he's a resident! He cut my mouth so many times I got an infection at the incision site and when I came back for an examination because I was in sooooo much pain he couldnt even explain his technique of how many times he cut me to the supervising staff! I told them on the onset I had low pain tolerence in his notes he put I have high pain tolerence! When I asked for pain medication they treated me like I was a hype! He had zero compassion for me as a patient ..never even made a phone call To me after he knew he messed me up ..very detached. They placate and gaslight you when you have an issue with their work! Chief of students described him as very competent and said he performed at the necessary standard of care ..and they only give 2% of patients pain meds after surgery wayyyyyyy below the national standard! I havent been able to resume my normal life since ians ive had a sinus and respiratory infection i cant get rid off annnnd no sense of smell! Its been almost 2 months! Stay away from this resident! Came here due to DIFFICULTY BREATHING because of an affected/collapsed EUSTACIAN TUBE = & AGAIN with lazy, frustrated, dismissive staff. What am i on or what drugs have I taken?? Arguing even. Last night I report PARCHED SYMPTON and the "rn" said: cdrink water then". I explain I've been thirty ALL day, she curtly responded, "don't drink water then", sets my wheelchair in an area it SHOULDN'T be in and proceeds to go report ME to security, talking about "I can't be there" - nurse, "you put me here"?! wtf?? The ER staff here is beyond subpar and should reconsider working elsewhere. CARE is what is needed and that is utterly absent here. Security on the other hand: caring, considerate & helpful. They've created a diabolical system where there is literally no way for me to contact my Primary Care doctor. Their phone system is labyrinthine and sends you to voicemail boxes. Their MyChart literally directs you to their phone system. This is, without a doubt, the worst care provider I've ever dealt with in my entire life, and that life has included some of the worst care providers in the San Francisco area. read more

Apparently if you go to the emergency room on the weekend, the wait is exponentially better. I didn't know that, I did know I was bleeding- no pain but lots of blood. They brought me to a back room and where it was filled with other people there and you could hear the clanks of handcuffs, it truly was better than thinking I was dying. The nurses were kind or if they weren't, they were still passionate about making sure I was going to leave okay. If you go, bring some noise canceling headphones, a charger and eye mask. Also, the reception is bad but the internet surprisingly good. Install some apps so you can communicate with your family. Don't be surprised if you see a team of doctors at your bed. Some are residents that are still fresh faced with hairlines and zero wrinkles, eager to learn from the experience and ready to help you once they leave. Go ahead and treat them with dignity. The last part that only occurred to me once I was feeling better was that the staff, doctors, nurses, techs were of all kinds of diverse backgrounds which personally made me feel very safe. I heard multiple languages being spoken. My voice was heard and taken seriously. read more

I've dealt with both opioid and alcohol addictions - and through all the ups, downs, ins, and outs, the Bridge team has kept a kind and keen eye on me and my recovery. Every interaction with their team has shown that they are paying attention to my complex medical history - and they are all exceedingly knowledgeable, thoughtful, reassuring, and helpful. Today my father had an appointment at the cardiology department for a Echocardiogram and the person that performed that to my dad was so rude from the moment he called my dad from the waiting room to go inside the room. He seemed like he didn't care he just wanted to get it over with and when he called someone in to help him with the IV he started to yap about personal stuff with him, when my dad was literally getting his echo done. To me personally it was really unprofessional. When it was done he didn't even help my dad to get up from the bed or wipe the gel he applied to his chest he just left the towel on his chest and told me I could wipe it off now. He walked out with the other person to continue yapping. I was very disappointed. They need to better their staff here. read more

The Dentist Gilbert S. Yee at Highland Hospital Dental Clinic in Oakland, CA broke my tooth because he was talking & looking at students in the examination room. Dr. Yee promised to repair his error, lead me on & on with appointments & promises then failed to make the repair. The Dental Office that originally did my dental work told me that my Dental bridge is not repairable & must be replaced. I demanded correction immediately then he lied & said it broke due to popcorn when I didn't have popcorn, he used something resembling a plier tool. The Facility now refuses to take responsibility. My sister had an appointment for knee surgery follow up and we came to the 4th level of the parking garage. As soon as we entered the door near the parking area, there was a security woman sitting down. She did not greet me, she began to say "put all your things down in the bin". I had let her know that my sister has crutches and cannot walk and I asked kindly to get a wheelchair to us. The security then took a long time to say it on the walkie. she ignored me and then finally mentioned it to a volunteer. the wheelchair then came and the security said "you can go over here and sit down" she said it in the most disrespectful way. I then asked her if I could get my belongings .. she said "YES PLEASE" in a rude manner. my experience here at highland has always been great but to be the first person that we see and be disrespectful to us patients is by far the worst. She should be held accountable. This happened around 1:10pm on September 15th. read more

This review begins with walking through the front door of Highland Hospital in Oakland and may provide information that explains particular situations, possibly accompanied by hints for new patients such as myself. For example, going on the third week of internment my bedside table divulged a second top surface that slides out, so keep in mind potential points of ignorance are always possible within any experience. Security at the front door checks your bags and passes you through a metal detector. Any disallowed items such as a pocket knife or lighter will be disposed of, or you may enter again later. Bring identification and medical insurance information if possible. For an extended stay consider a change of underwear, hat to keep your ears warm at night, phone charger with six foot cord and maybe even a book, magazine or something else to read. Visiting hours are 10am - 10pm, otherwise security can route things to your room. I was coughing and at that stage of illness where you are feeling better but still have plenty of loogies to hack up. My employer insisted that I be cleared for work before returning, so off to Highland for a brief checkup. Admittance proceeded quickly, no standing in line, wrist band was issued, a call back to the window for temperature, blood pressure and oxygen levels. I then took a seat in the waiting area with other patients, none of whom appeared to be homeless. Coughing up sputum into tissues seemed to expedite this duration, to avert contagion no doubt, although wearing a face mask of course. I spent some hours in the basement, likely taking a chest x-ray and giving blood samples; recollection is a bit fuzzy yet. An isolation room soon became available by miracle of coincidence whereby a wheelchair whisked me upstairs and into a private suite having a view of the sky and low wall to prevent falling off the adjacent roof corner. A nurse is assigned to you, their internal number written on your dry-board, charge nurse as well and often a CNA name and number all of which vary from floor to floor but are generally consistent between shift changes. These five digits are dialed from your bedside phone. Loop the cord through a convenient handle on an upper side bedrail so the phone may be retrieved in case it falls to the floor, even when you are not able to move around easily. Night-owl nurses tend to be attentive, however if you cannot reach your nurse, try pressing the large "Nurse" button centrally located on the television remote control. The wired remote includes a 3.5mm plug for headphones on one side. Unplug this before utilizing the nurse button! (your eardrums will thank you) The first meal was mostly just two large meatballs, ensuing breakfast similarly sparse, showcasing two french toast. Figuring there must be a wider selection, including scrambled eggs hopefully, was rewarded with a menu for placing meal orders. Often the selections were better than adequate. You can also ask your nurse for snacks - bread with lunchmeat, juice, pudding or graham crackers. One nurse brought mayo and mustard to go with the sandwich. I was moved to a duplex room replete with a neighbor patient and two curtains for privacy after contraindication of isolation. Each room appeared clean and contained reclining chairs; the second one had a nice view of the hills and temple. Blood samples were taken every morning, usually by "vampires", a specialized form of nurse - all gentle pokers for the most part. My wristband was fastidiously scanned before administering medications or field trips to the CT, but perhaps not always after the critical stages of treatment had been resolved. Various specialists certainly recognized me by then. Your nurse remains the same (day or night shifts) for their tour of duty, then they are off for a few days. I didn't see any of them again, as they are rotated elsewhere. You have to assert some responsibility for your own care; if your dressing is leaking be sure to specify that you need the bedsheets changed and a fresh gown, not just that the dressing requires changing. Ask for help tying the gown in back or figure out how to tie it up backwards without looking. Wipe down nearby actionable surfaces with alcohol prep pads. Your IV should be replaced every four days and have the date written. Small details you wouldn't realize had you never been hospitalized for any amount of time could influence the outcome. The nitty gritty: what on earth was wrong with me? At first the exact pathogen was unidentified, so a spread spectrum medley of various antibiotics (all of them) were in turn dripped through my IV - actually two, a fresh IV in the other arm for the first CT scan - including vanco which I assume was version three because some strains of staph are resistant to version one. The nurse I asked didn't know which and it was disco shortly thereafter. It wasn't TB either, nor covid - confirming the diy covid test result from a few weeks prior. (to be con'd) read more

Maybe after construction is finished this hospital will be better. But for now, I avoid this place. So glad I have better Insurance now and go to Kaiser. Highland hospital needs some better staff. People can be so rude here! You wait forever just to ask someone a question. Like what the f do you get paid for if you're just gonna be talking to security and your coworkers, not doing your damn job! It's always the same I used to come here for my OBGYN appointments, that was out! They were just horrible here. No customer service! They need a new cleaning staff cause it was dirty. Medical field is horrible now, been here with family and myself, family member needed to be checked for a stroke instead they asked was this her normal behavior, other family member was told medicine isn't a science when it is. People from all over the world work here, but treat you like shit while getting their training and not treating you. They don't care if you drop dead, don't take me there in an emergency. Almost every employee who works here are complacent and don't care, yes we all work for our money. But in the medical field you should really care, you have people lives in your hand . I continue to appreciate how fantastic Highland has been. In the 7 months of follow up care that my ninety plus mom has received after being hit by a car that broke her leg from Highland, specifically Dr Nicoleau (very understanding) and the orthopedic clinic (call center, medical assistants, x-ray techs, & the clinic's front desk people), my mom has always been treated with kindness, patience & respect. They have been very responsive when we've needed new orders or a letter for insurance. I've always felt like they are on our side. And thanks to everyone's skill & compassion, she is at her independent living apartment and walking now! I can't thank Highland enough. You guys are the best! read more

This review is for the patient/visitor parking lot only. All of the people--from security to the receptionists to the nurses to the doctors--were all kind and helpful and knowledgeable. However, the parking lot is the clusterfuck to end all clusterfucks. If awards were given for clusterfucks, it would win top prize and blow all other competition out of the water. The first time we went, it took 10 minutes just to get into the lot. Once we got in the lot, it took another 10 just to get to the ramp to the second level. It turns out this was because several morons leaving the lot decided to turn the two-way lanes (one going in/up, one going out/down) into a one-way thoroughfare (out/down only). Things finally started moving when a parking attendant started directing traffic. When we left, it took a good 30 minutes to exit. (The line wrapped around to between the 2nd and 3rd parking levels.) None of the payment machines in the hospital/garage work, so you have to wait for everyone to pay the attendant at the bottom. The second time we went (which makes me a masochist or an idiot, or maybe both), we got in okay, but it took us almost an hour to leave. It was nuts. I thought I was going to have a rage-induced heart attack. (So I guess it's a good thing I was stuck in a hospital parking lot???) It's just sooo ridiculous. Especially because you end up paying more than you should because time keeps accruing as you try to leave. Like we were in the hospital for two hours, but ended up having to pay for three because we were stuck in the lot for so long. Parking is relatively cheap (I think we paid like $3-4), but it's the principle. I would actually prefer just paying a $5 flat rate upon entry if it made leaving less of an infuriating debacle. But hopefully *knocks on wood* I never have to go back. read more
