On a drive through the outside edge of the mountain range on our way back to Texas, we came across…read morethis roadside gem where there is nothing else around expect a few houses spread apart, hills, lots of dirt and desert brush, and a ravine behind the buildings were a small creek was running. Very serene and peaceful, mind you the rooster on side was being plenty loud. We stopped as we saw signs for "mountain apples", so curiosity got the best of us and we stopped. It's a run down barn building, wider than deep, and to the left... cages. With goats, chickens, roosters, a donkey, and a camel. If there were others, they were hiding. The camel was funny, as he/she was very vocal. Trying to compete with the rooster, maybe. The barn store had a lot of canned items, jams, beets, sauces, salsas, random veggies. It housed various souvenirs as well. The young lady there was super nice, a Texas Tech student that was home for the holidays. Very neat place. If you're in this area of nowhere, it's a fun place to stop and stretch the legs, get some actual apples that are grown in the area, and pet the camel.

I was surprised at how many unique animals they have here- water buffalo, goats, turkeys, camel, zebra, capybara, kangaroo, donkeys, alpacas, pigs, emus, ostrich, bunnies, etc. We ending up spending a little less than an hour here. I asked them how business had been and they said they had been blessed during this time. We bought 2 pints of cider (one apple and one cherry for $2 each) and a pound of tart apples for $3. They had honeys and jams, nuts and mini pies. It's about $2 to feed the animals and admission costs are all covered by donation. The journey back was a lot quicker and we left happy and full of cider. 2020 #23

My partner and I did a KAYAK trip on the Rio Grande yesterday from about 8 miles north of Alameda…read moredown to the Alameda bridge. Nick offers this full service. You meet at the End of the trip pick-up point , The Alameda Bridge, then Nick takes you to the put-in point , About 8 miles north. He sets up the kayaks gave us a few brief pointers on what you remember and off we went. The cruise was great. The water was cold but not at all uncomfortable. Even though the kayaks are hardshell and a bit wider, hence more stable, we still managed to capsize one after a mistake we made approaching a narrow passage. We capsized the kayak BUT righting it was surprisingly easy. With the mountains to the east and the natural environment along the river, with ducks and egrets, the trip down the river was scenic. We both really loved the solitude, and the quiet, except for the sounds of nature. Just a thoroughly enjoyable paddle down the river. We were grateful to come across this business,Spirit Fly Expeditions, to be able to do this. Have thought often about maybe getting kayaks but at 68 & 72 years old I'm not sure how much we would use them, especially given the processes of getting them on and then off the river. We found this to be a great opportunity to experience the river via KAYAK without having to purchase them and then deal with those processes. With this option available to us, I see us on the river several times a year, maybe with friends, visitors to Albuquerque, etc. as well. When we arrived at the pick up point. Nick was there to greet us. We got out of the kayaks thanked him and off we went. He took care of everything else. Again, we were grateful to have this service to be able to have the river kayaking experience. Without this service it would not have happened for us. We're already planning another trip with some friends. If this sounds like an experience you would enjoy we highly recommend Nick and Spirit Fly Expeditions.

This has got to be THEE cutest park ever!! (Yes, I'm shouting ) We stayed near town to hit up White Sands & we loved it there too & wanted a park to eat, take a hike & relax. First off we parked in the wrong section ‍. We parked by the first bridge (Tom's bridge). So first you want to find the main entrance. There you will see a wonderful map of the adorable park & the fairy homes. I'll give you a clue, don't use the map, it's not that great BUT is adorable for pictures! Look on the ground for a white fairy wand & you are close to a fairy house. If you find a T, then look for a Troll home. I saw online ONE cute fairy home & thought I would surprise our teens with one cute fairy home. Boy, was I wrong! There's 10 !! We did 9/10. It starts to get into a residential area & maybe it was us buuuut a little old lady didn't look to please that we were there looking for the 10th one. Sorry Lady! They have great picnic spots, benches to sit everywhere! I'm a big big girl and I walked one way the whole thing than my wonderful husband ran back to get our car for me & the kids. We had packed a picnic & parked by the big picnic area. There's about 2 parking spots. All & all, we had a blast ! Greatest Park Ever !!
