Okay, the year is nearing its end and I just want to talk about the teachers. The teachers I've had…read moreat my time at this school have been relatively good; atleast compared to my old school. First off, my favorite teacher, Mr. Phillips. Right now, he teaches accelerated 7th-grade math and regular 8th-grade math. He's an excellent teacher and has made class much more fun and his classroom has become a safe space for me and many others. He's kind to his students and genuinely helps us when we need help. He does not belittle us (his students) when we ask questions and even encourages questions get asked. At the end of class, in order from the attendance sheet, he has one student try and score a basket in a miniature basketball hoop. Overall, he is a great teacher and I wish I could have him next year. Second, Mrs. Selby. Her class is fun and calming; her classroom is perfect when you're exhausted from going back and forth across the campus all day. She's kind to her students and she is (in my opinion) pretty funny. Her assignments are informational and comprehensible while also being fun and not overwhelming. She does not assign hours of busy work when we near breaks or when we have a substitute teacher, and she assigns just enough work for us to leave class at the end of the period without homework. All in all, she's a great teacher and super understanding. Next up, (the infamous?) Mr. Ruiz (also known as Mr. Rizzless to some). I've seen other reviews claiming that he has physically abused his students. Which, from my experience is not true and I have never heard of or seen this happening to anyone of his students. He does assign overwhelming workloads, especially at the end of class saying he doesn't get paid enough for this (that does not excuse this though). Just about every day, countless students along with myself leave his class with HOURS of homework which, of course, is not fun. People joke about this as a way to cope, mostly saying things like, "Mr. Ruiz assigning 100 Ck-12s 5 minutes before the bell rings," or, "Mr. Ruiz assigning a 5-part project less than a week before school ends be like." Sometimes he is pretty funny but his assignments are horribly timed and the workload is terrible. In the end, he's not the greatest teacher but he is certainly not the worst. Now, about Coach Gray. He's a super nice teacher and I am glad to have been in his class. His expectations are not high at all and are easy to meet. He is very reasonable and cracks jokes in the middle of class. The way he grades his class is unique as well. He grades his students in terms of participation rather than skill in the subject. This creates equal opportunities for all students no matter any handicaps or limitations they face. Overall, he is a great P.E. Teacher and I believe more coaches should teach classes like him. And now, Mr. Tindall. I had his class for a short period of time but he was super mean. I am a pretty decent student. I pay attention in class, complete my work to the my best ability, maintain focus on the subject, and participate to the best ability. However, while I was watching him teach my class a lesson one day, I was silent and had a complete focus on the problem we were working on, when he called on me and commented on me in a rather rude manner. I would rather not repeat this comment in this review but I am glad I am no longer in his class. He is grouchy and rude. He also makes no effort to make lessons easier, or fun, or even put any effort into being somewhat kind to his students. Next, Miss Silva (Mrs. Silva). She is an okay teacher. She can be understanding at times when extensions are needed for assignments and can be kind. Though she has these qualities, her workload can be unbearable and at this time, is unbearable. It is extremely overwhelming, especially at the end of the year when the grading period is almost done and people are trying to raise their grades. Overall, her workload could definitely use improvement and I think she should be a bit kinder to her students. This is all for now due to the sheer length of this review. Thanks for reading this far!

Teachers that we have not had good experiences with include Mr. Ruiz, Ms. Newman, and Ms. Turnbull. The past experiences that I have had with Mr. Ruiz have not been well. He has been anything but positive, and is CONSTANTLY discriminating against his students. He picks favorites, and his class is extremely hard to manage with, along with all of his students being out of control. To add on, Ms. Newman fails to ever properly teach her class, usually leaving students confused with their work, and unable to complete many assignments with her multiple classes along with how much work she assigned. Now for the biggest problem, Ms. Turnbull. While me and my friend have been here, we haven't experienced anything positive in her class, we have been heavily discriminated against multiple times. We have been nothing but kind and hardworking students, but are yet to receive any type of appreciation or support. In my friend's words, "How she has been treating us is completely unacceptable and makes the class unbearable and makes me not look forward to school" we have been dreading going to her class, knowing that it is hard to get a good citizenship grade in her class, or even an ounce of respect. We desired a small focused experience with dedicated teachers and faith base curriculum. What we got far exceeded our expectations, the teachers are so caring, creative, and focused on our child's individual needs. Each of my daughters is thriving in her class and is known by all teachers and staff. The academics are rigorous, but the teachers presented them in a way that keeps the kids engaged. They come home knowing far more than I would have ever hoped for, both in traditional academics and in faith curriculum. The school is not afraid of new technology and leverages AI and group learning approaches that would not be possible in a larger school. My children have been benefited greatly from this approach. One of the most important aspects for me is that the school does not tolerate isolating or bullying behavior. My fourth grader was distracted in her public school experience by 'mean girls' but at St Paul's, she is friends with each girl in her class and has often commented on how grateful she is to have no cliques or strife. This is so rare and is a testament to the hard work of the teachers and staff. Being members of the St. Paul's school community has increased my husband's and my faith as well. On a hard days, the staff has taken time to walk with us or pray. On great days they celebrate with us. We feel like we belong here as well, not just our children. Highly recommended on every front.

It has taken me months of reflection to write this review because our experience with MMS was…read moredeeply confusing and upsetting. Our 3-year-old daughter started at MMS in January 2024. We really loved her primary teachers, and initially, she seemed to be doing well. There were a few incidents of misbehavior (hitting, biting, not listening--maybe three times?) but overall, it was a positive experience. She made friends, spoke happily about school and her teachers, and seemed engaged. From the beginning, I found Dena to be condescending and sanctimonious, but I tried to overlook it. After summer camp, she returned to the same class with many of the same students. But from the start of the new school year, we began receiving frequent calls and incident reports about her behavior--hitting, biting, disrupting nap time, etc. Over the next few months, things unraveled. Our daughter no longer wanted to go to school. She became hysterical every morning at drop-off. We received daily incident reports and multiple phone calls from the school. At home and in other settings, playdates, gymnastics, family events, her behavior was very different. She wasn't perfect, but she was typical for a 3-4-year-old. It began to feel like the school had completely lost control of the situation. She was regularly sent to the office for "breaks" or timeouts, but she would just sit and color, so it didn't feel like a consequence to her. The school called us to pick her up early several times, saying they couldn't manage her and that she was essentially a danger to others. She also began saying things like "I'm bad" and "I'm mean," which was a major red flag. We took her to the pediatrician, an occupational therapist, and had her evaluated for ADHD and other potential concerns. Everything came back within the range of typical development. We had multiple meetings with the school. Dena assured us they were trying everything, but their actions didn't reflect that. Eventually, they asked if we could switch her to half days. Although it was a major challenge for our full-time working household, we agreed, hoping it would help. It didn't. The daily calls continued, and we were still asked to pick her up early. They assigned an aide to shadow her, but the behavior didn't improve. Our daughter started coming home saying no one wanted to play with her, that she had no friends, and that she was bad. Our OT was confused--if she had a one-on-one aide, how was she still getting into so many incidents? We tried sticker charts, calming strategies, every tool recommended by professionals. And yes, our daughter is emotional and sometimes struggles to keep her hands to herself, but again, not in a way that felt outside the norm for her age. We received two to three detailed incident reports each day. It often seemed like the school was spending more energy documenting her behavior than actually helping her. Over time, it became clear we weren't welcome. Dena and some of the teachers began giving us cold looks. Dena even told us that other parents didn't want their kids playing with ours. The whole environment felt hostile and out of control. After another unproductive meeting with Dena, we were told our options were to find a new school or pay for a full-time aide, on top of tuition. We enrolled her in a new school the following week, and the difference has been incredible. One of the strangest parts came when we decided to withdraw our daughter. Dena asked if we would bring her by for "closure." I declined, as I didn't feel that would be appropriate. I went to pick up her belongings, and while the students and teachers had made her a goodbye card, which seemed sweet at first, the messages inside were deeply unsettling. Things like "We know there's good in you" made it sound like she was evil or broken. Again, she was THREE. And she really is a sweet, loving kid (who gives the best hugs). At her new school, she has many friends, and in 7 months, she's had one behavioral incident. We still recognize that she is an emotional and spirited child, but she is thriving in a supportive environment. I only wish we had made the switch sooner. Looking back, it's shocking to realize that for the entire second half of the school year at MMS, we didn't hear a single positive thing about our daughter. I feel heartbroken thinking about the constant negative feedback loop she was caught in. no wonder she thought she was "bad." I'm not saying MMS is a terrible school for everyone. Clearly, some families have had positive experiences. But it seems that if your child doesn't fit a certain mold, they are unwilling or unequipped to support them. I still struggle to understand how things got so bad, especially considering the immediate change we saw when we moved her. Even at home, she was noticeably happier. she now runs into school every morning and i have so much peace of mind.

All this occurred at the busy corner of Valeta Street and Famosa Blvd. Reyes Construction did the job and it turned out very nice. One big reason for the project? There was toxic waste at the site from its construction in the late 1950's and it needed to be dealt with. Between 2001 and 2008, SDUSD conducted environmental investigations at the site and determined that elevated concentrations of lead and dioxins/furans believed to be from burn ash material brought onto the site and mixed with on-site materials during construction of the fill slopes and portions of the playing fields. Also a concern? Contaminated run-off from the school site into nearby Famosa Slough. A community activist observed sediment run-off flowing into the Slough from the School Site and reported it to the state Water Board. A notice of violation was given to the City Schools to contain the pollution. Eventually, a storm water treatment system was installed in 2009 at the parking lot on the eastern portion of the site. This now removes sediment from storm water run off before it enters the Slough. This system has helped clean up the water at Famosa Slough greatly. Also, the retaining wall would help out with a big problem in the area: parking. The new retaining wall has built up the upper parking lot at the school and now there is finally significant space for additional parking and for parking spaces at adjacent Bill Cleator Park. Future projects planned for the new greatly expanded site include a Correia Sports Complex with multiple-use fields, space for soccer, football, lacrosse and field hockey events, with seating for spectators and ,continued use of an existing baseball field at the site and expanded night lighting. 5 YELP STARS for the new retaining wall. That corner now looks so much better without the dead weeds and pickleweed that used to grow on the hillside. The wall cleaned up pollution in the ground and water and it will help improve the dire parking situation in the area for the YMCA and the baseball and soccer crowd who play at Bill Cleator Park. Eventually, the retaining wall with help to make more room for a projected enhanced sports complex that the entire Point Loma Cluster of schools will be able to use for Pennisula sports activities.

It's like you're not cool unless you put others down here. Depressing! The vaping situation is impressive in the worst possible way. Some students appear to spend more time trying to look mysterious in the bathroom than they do learning. The teachers deserve medals, raises, vacations, and probably therapy. Many are clearly overworked and doing their best to teach while also serving as counselors, security guards, referees, conflict mediators, and part-time detectives. A kid got punched this year on the field just because! Tons of adults around too. The fact that learning occurs at all is nothing short of miraculous. A handful of students seem determined to keep racism alive despite everyone knowing better by now. It's disappointing and makes life harder for students who are just trying to get an education. Overall, this school taught valuable life lessons for my kid, including patience, conflict management, and how to recognize chaos from a safe distance. Would not recommend. Home school if you can! Let me start by saying, this review is long overdue and our child is only in Pre-K!…read more The Evans School is more than a school, it's a family. At the core of this family is The Evan's School's "21 values." These 21 values serve as the foundation for the children's development. While most kids who attend a private school in La Jolla come from hard-working established families, the goal is aimed at developing the children into good-hearted and kind human beings.   Every morning starts with the pledge of allegiance and The Evans Pledge, " I promise myself today, to feel, to think, to speak and to act, only in accord with those things which are good and true and beautiful." How's that to start your day? ;) In a discussion with a group of well-educated parents whose children also attend Evan's, the question came up about investing in your child's development in earlier vs. later years. Everyone agreed that it's all about investing in the foundation of learning now in the younger years. This sets the stage for learning and gives them the tools they need to breeze through junior high school, high school and college if they choose to attend. Several Evans Alumni go on and attend prestigious colleges and many go straight to entrepreneurial endeavors or perhaps lives of service in the military. Regardless of what the student ends up doing later in life, the foundation for learning and The Evans values are engrained in each and every student so that they go on to become GOOD HUMANS.  If you're still reading and this resonates with you, then I suggest you set up a private tour of the school. That being said, I'm writing this during the COVID-19 pandemic and the kids are currently staying home. Unlike other schools, The Evans School immediately shifted gears and went to online learning leveraging Zoom and other software platforms so the kids could resume the much-needed structure and environment that they crave. I'm not going to lie, this was also much needed for our own sanity having at least one child attending school Monday - Friday.  I could not possibly give The Evans School a high enough rating. It's the type of place that creates raving fans and most importantly good humans. Alumni now send their children to the school. They continually honor grandparents and our military. It's not for everyone as it is more traditional in a world that seems to have abandoned more traditional values. I personally chose a path of service as a firefighter/paramedic and entrepreneur. My wife and I will continue to do whatever it takes to send our son to this amazing school because our priority is developing a strong foundation in learning while simultaneously instilling the values that create extraordinary humans.
