I cannot express enough just how incredibly horrible this place and their employees are! My brother chose Royal Oaks for my mother to stay once she needed round the clock care. Eric is real good at selling you on what great care your lived one will receive and we fell for it. What a HUGE MISTAKE!!! The nurses are incredibly RUDE, they allowed my mother to get really bad bedsores (even though she was mobile), they would tie her to her bed and let her scream until she calmed down when she had an infection and her dementia got worse (from the infection) instead of working to calm her. She broke several bones while in their care they claimed due to "unobserved" falls. She had cancer on her face they didn't even address until i finally took her to the Dr and found out it was cancer and had it removed with an outside Dr. she had a HUGE what they called a bedsore when she died photo attached but claim she died of natural causes (NO AUTOPSY) see photo, you tell me? Even worse ALL of her jewelry was stolen from her when she passed. We only got 1 little ring back out thousands worth of jewelry. In fact they stoled a lot of her belongings over the time she was there even though we labeled all of her things with her name. No one even had an answer or cared about that either. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!

When my mother-in-law, a resident for two years, was sick in ICU, she couldn't wait to go "home, where my friends are, and my cook, Tom!" They don't try to be the fanciest place in town, but it's a warm, homelike atmosphere where she's happy. When Mama was able, every time the wheels rolled on the activity bus, she was on it. When asked where she was going, she would say, "I don't know, but I know I'm going to have fun!" The units or cottages are small enough that those who live there feel like family to each other. It's almost impossible to re-create that feeling in a larger facility. The food is awesome...nutritious and tasty. They're quite accommodating for special dietary needs, too. If you were thinking of placing a loved one here, or going yourself, I think you would be pleased. We are!

Toilet, once again, found in a disgusting condition (pictures again can be provided). I used to only see things like this on those old documentaries of mental institutions where the patients are just forgotten about and roll around in their filth. I am both saddened and angry! Nobody should be subjected to such conditions. If the answer is more staff, so be it. If the answer is better management of the current staff, so be it. If the answer is a little less profit and hire better trained and more caring housekeepers, so be it. If the housekeeping supervisor could begin checking the rooms to make sure a basic level of hygiene and cleanliness are met, so be it! The cost of Sonata is way too high to have to accept these conditions. With all this said, there are some very nice and caring employees that work there. Jodi at the front desk is always very helpful and meets you with a smile. The dining room staff always seem to care for the folks as well. Management has been spoken to and made aware of this issue and we continue to await resolution.

They said she was 'combative'. That woman didn't even discipline her son much less be combative-she was a college professor and dean of economics at a massive university. She was not combative. If she was with them, it was when we weren't there and had to be for a good reason- like staff did something to her. In less than 6 wks she had 3 falls-all in the night. They were also strapping her down without our knowledge The 3rd fall landed her in the hospital and this place refused to let her return upon discharge! We also had a bad feeling because day 3, the same poor woman was in her wheelchair each day, same clothes and same spot in the day room. We had to bring her home and watch hospice kill her for 2 more weeks. Was a terrible experience. We are posting this review now b cuz we are having to look for a place for 'dad' now & realizing we should have posted sooner to forewarn people. The woman that we interviewed with back then seemed nice but we now know this was all part of her 'selling the place' act. They only care about collecting your money here - not your person(s) you entrust to them for over $10k a month. We do not recommend this place at all. We have heard great things about Zon Beachside tho-checking that next.

The activity director promised several times to send us payment for our services and has not followed through. When they were part of Brookdale, they always paid their bills on time. The executive director and the activity director, who were there when it was a Brookdale, have departed since we provided the services. Supposedly, they are going to have a new management company which is their excuse for not paying the bills. This must justify why they are totally unresponsive, do not tell the truth about sending payments and then do not follow through when they promise to send us payment. This is a disservice to the elderly who live there as well as to the honest vendors who provided them with services.

Death is their business, NOT LIFE, even though it is short. The brochures say they will continue the meds..............LIES!!! They admitted my mom after hours with NO DOCTOR to check her and NO MEDS available, yet after 5 was when they do admissions!!!!

She would always call me right after her visits every week to report on his status. She was always pro-active, in trying to maintain his quality of life and care. If she needed to come in more than once per week because of a problem, she would be there. She made my father feel special, and that he mattered to her. He would always smile when she would come in to see him. The other workers that would come in to help him were just as attentive. Allison, who would shower him 3 times per week, Donna a volunteer, who would come every week to see him, Stanley the Chaplain, who would give him comfort, and Jason the social worker, who would visit him often as well. I can't say enough good things about the people and the care they gave my father. It takes special people to do the work of hospice care. God bless them all! - Mike Reed
