His shop is modest and it's only him, but he does a great job, takes his time and more important cuts my hair straight. If you want a 15-minute hair cut, go somewhere else. It'll take Sam at least 20-30 minutes because he's deliberate and careful which I appreciate. Some other barbers i've been to make fun of him, but I keep coming back. They say he's too slow, but they never criticize the quality of his cuts because they can't. He is the definition of old school, traditional barber. He uses shears and scissors and will shave around your ears and neck with a straight razor. He has a loyal customer base and he knows everyone in the neighborhood. Don't go to him if you're in a hurry. If he has people waiting, he won't talk. If you're the only person in the shop, he'll socialize. I appreciate that.

That's ok, but his customer service and attitude just suck. At first, I thought it was an act and was amusing, but it was not an act, and it was not funny at all. His macho, bro-like attitude, permeates everything that is said in the shop. As a liberal gay man, I felt like I was in a time, warp and taken back into the Reagan-era 80s. The constant misogynist jokes and racial innuendos were really hard to take. He berated nearly every African-American political leader with the implicit suggestion that it was because of their race. Everything culminated one day when a guy came into get a haircut for his wedding. The owner gave some unsolicited marriage advice to him. His advice was that the customer needed to start the marital relationship by showing his wife who the boss was and by giving her a good beating. Yes, you read that correctly! Whether this was a joke or not, I was appalled and have never returned. I'll never spend another dime in the shop and regret that I didn't tell the owner how I felt.
