Impressed by Amalia restaurant where attentive service meets quality food. Throw in the elegant decor, live music and great company and you couldn't ask for more They start you off with a selection of four different salsas and tostadas. Then we had the opportunity to share the Coliflor al Grill (which is also fried by the way!), Salmon al Chipotle Balsámico, and for dessert the Pan de Elote with Glorias ice cream. Everything was super tasty from start to finish. The servers keep an eye on you and make sure to take empty plates off the table refill your drinks and offer you more things as soon as you're done. Amalia came with very high recommendations from friends and Yelp, unfortunately we had a different experience. Upon making our reservation we were not informed there would be a time limit for our dinner. Nevertheless, upon arrival we were told we only had 2 hours at our table since they would use it. And sure enough two hours later we were asked to leave even though we were still ordering drinks. It was not as if we were just loitering without paying. Really rude in our opinion. Then there was the food. If I had to describe it in one word it would be: uneventful. We tried the chicharron de rib-eye and another steak as well as three sides. The quality of the meat was lacking and not well cooked. The sides were bland. It might be the fact that I had such high expectations that I found this place a disappointment. Drinks were nothing out of the ordinary. In general, overpriced for what it is. Apparently the place doubles as a night club.Perhaps if you only go for drinks or at times where there's music it might be different. But if you are looking for exceptional food, it's best to stick with La Nacional. If you want to splurge best to do it in style and with great quality. read more

La verdad me decepcionaron varios platillos desde las entradas mal servidas, unos tacos de atún nada frescos, la alcachofa regular, las verduras al carbón venían picadas no eran enteras, después con el plato fuerte un Rib Eye al tuétano no llego al término que lo pedí, venia cortado en cuadritos, frío, aparte el tuétano era una tabla pero sólo tenía un pedacito de unos 2 cm, y para acabar pedí tortillas las cuales llegaron duras y frías. Por cierto pedí un salero y no habia, sólo tenían sal rosa del Himalaya, muy bien si vas a marinar o condimentar un platillo pero no si quieres un limón con sal para tu bebida. Don't go there, save your money & go elsewhere. This place used to be one of the hottest spots in San Pedro but it has severely deteriorated over time. I recently experience the worst service -- it took them one hour to take our order, three different waiters came by and described the menu all differently, took them another hour to bring in just the appetizers, another hour to bring the main course, and finally they ran out of dessert. Worst part of all? They allow smoking inside. Unacceptable. read more

We came to Monterrey Mexico for a family holiday vacation. This is now our 6 or 7th time in Mexico and twice in Monterrey. In the past we have gone to some good steak places in the area but this time we decided to go out to a nice dinner for the first time before heading back home. This was recommended by a relative from a list of 7 other places. We get to this place and we can tell from the interior that it's a very nice modern looking restaurant. Though its located in a mall/plaza center the feel of the place is very deceiving from where it is. We were greeted very nicely at the door and taken to our table where we requested a wine menu. This was the first problem. Our waiter was very confused as to what bottles were available versus single glass selection and it seems there was an issue of tasting the wine prior to getting a full bottle. Now you may say it could have been a Spanish communication issue but we are fluent Spanish speakers and we wanted to taste the wines that are available by the glass. After going back and forth we just decided to ask for the manager and that seemed to have worked out better, so as a suggestion- if you are not getting through to your waiter just stop and ask for the manager and he will gladly expedite everything easily. From then on we were in heaven. We received an avocado and tomatillo ceviche with some sauces and tostadas and that is where it really began. We forgot about the waiter/wine issue, the confusion in communication, and anything else that could possibly come up. This ceviche salad should be on the menu because its that good. We must have gone through 3 order of it until our appetizers arrived. The apps of octopus and tuna tartar were splendid, well seasoned and a good portion. Usually high end restaurants tend to serve on the smaller end but this was a good app. portion. This place also had sushi as well but I will leave off comments as we did not partake in any sushi but if it's anything like our meal I would imagine it would be good. Now for the dinner portion of the meal. We are somewhat of foodies. We enjoy a good meal and usually a home cooked meal will do but this time we wanted to splurge a little. In the states we have been to some of the best steakhouses from Peter Lugers to Del Friscos. We decided to take a shot at some meats and see how they fared considering the meal was excellent up to this point. We order a NY strip rare to medium rare or what they call 1/4 and a filet mignon medium rare as well. Now they did have a little snafu with the filet mignon as they ran out but they have it cooked two ways on the menu but call it different things but what we got was a nice size fillet mignon. The strip comes with this excellent salad on the dish with the meat with lime and salt as the dressing and its to die for. The meat was cooked to my exact liking and is so easy to cut, just like you would expect a steak from an American steak house. The filet came a little more rare than I would have expected but they were very good about cooking it just a tad longer and when it came back it was perfect.. Can you say butter, that is how easy you could cut this meat and how easily it melted in your mouth. Again we are picky meat people and this place did justice to meat for it being our first time trying fine dining out. Most places in Mexico tend to go light on seasoning and lacks flavor but this place was spot on. I honestly don't know why the people that have eaten here would give this place less than 4 stars unless there was a service issue. For us that was easily made up for when we had a taste of the ceviche salad. Again this is easily the best food we have had from any restaurant or home cooking since we have been coming to Mexico. Going forward we plan on researching fine dining establishments to go to because clearly we did not think that such places existed to this caliber. This is just one of many that we will visit and this location has set a good bar to go against. As much as I like Amalia, I hope that the next places are even better or at least make the bar. Excellent work to the chefs at Amalia's. Hopefully we will return here. read more
