Also, the small white pumpkins were only $1 each as well. Bales of hay are $6 a piece, and bushels of corn were $5 each. Also available was Indian corn bushels, pumpkins by the pound, and other decorations. They had lots of baked goods for sale, well as apple cider, popcorn and other goodies. The staff were very helpful and even offered to carry my items to the counter for me while I was shopping. One of the staff loaded my car with the bale of hay and corn bushels. The flowers are beautiful, not over priced, and the bouquets were well put together. I have fond memories of coming out here in the crisp windy weather of fall to chose a pumpkin and some gourds. The pumpkins are always adorably painted, come in varying sizes, and, just like the flowers, aren't overpriced. My mom always complained I had to pick the biggest, most outrageous looking pumpkin in the world. Usually I got a large pumpkin with a famous painting on it like starry night or Mona Lisa. Eager to talk and get to know you a bit and even shares many stories from his lifetime. It's easy to see why he's a local favorite. Plenty of pumpkins to choose from and in all shapes and sizes. Everything is marked pretty clearly on price as well. I even noticed a small booth where they sell fresh honey! Cool! Note that they only take cash or checks (no credit cards) but Gene also seems to use the honor system as well where you can pay later on if you like. While we appreciated the gesture, we ended up purchasing two mini pumpkins with the little cash we did have. Gene finding out we had drove to see his farm from Chicago ended up picking out a bag full of assorted squash for us to take home and enjoy. And of course, some verbal instruction on how to prepare each one. After spending some time talking with him, he even gave us some local spots worth checking out nearby. What a guy! Not too big, not too small and plenty of fun activities for the entire family (the tractor train ride was the best I've ever been on!) The staff was very friendly and the prices were affordable. The pumpkins were only 32¢ a pound and were some of the prettiest I've ever seen! To top it all off, this amazing family was even holding a fundraiser for local children battling terminal illness. After a short tractor ride to the fields, we started with the raspberries and were able to fill our container in about 20 minutes. We then moved on to the strawberry fields. After spending an hour and a half in blistering heat, I was only able to fill about one-quarter of the container because there were virtually no strawberries available. Everyone picking alongside us seemed equally disappointed and frustrated that containers were being sold despite the lack of fruit in the fields. What made the experience even more frustrating was the no-refund policy, which meant we were out the money regardless of the poor conditions. I understand that crop availability can vary, but customers should be informed when fields are nearly picked over or offered a refund or alternative. Unfortunately, this experience was extremely disappointing, and I would not recommend this place to others.
