Royal Oak still stands proud along with many other businesses along Broad Street, commonly and rightfully known as Little Poland . Today, the Royal Oak is still family owned and operated. Not much from the outside. Inside, neatly organized shelves of nearly every liquor imaginable. Along with coolers chalk full of canned and bottled lagers. Many of which are European. On this day, I saw The Royal following a stop at Roly Poly Bakery, needing a requested bottle of Margarita mix. Thought, "This looks like a long shot, but what the heck." I walk in, greeted by the husband and wife owners, I asked, and was immediately shown the way down the narrow aisle to the "mix" section. BINGO! Great stop. After a Thank You, I browsed a little further. Impressed by the neat array of choices. Finally I decided to add a unique four pack of Polish lager to my bounty. We chatted at the counter as my card was swiped. Walking out, my first hesitant impressions were replaced with thoughts of comfort and a want to repay with another visit.

Half of Berlin Spirits is a walk-in fridge with a diverse selection of stout, cider, and everything in between, local brews included (hello Alvarium!). It can get overwhelming, but the friendly staff can help you find most anything. It's fun seeing new ciders appear, and IPAs are never disappointing. Outside the beer case are a variety of wines and bubblies, including canned wine and individual champagne bottles (good for campers like us). There's a moderate selection of spirits, and a few fun novelties up front (moonshine time!). CBM's not my usual spot, but it's always a fun stop. Beverages from near and far can all be found here, by the case, by the nip, by all manner of bottles. The back wall of this big box-sized package store is a refrigerated case, and aisle 1, as of January 2021, is being turned into a second wall of refrigeration. Woot! I haven't been disappointed by the wine recommendations occasionally tucked between price labels, including a recommendation for Sunset Meadow Vineyards. Chris helped me find a couple light but flavorful brews, and pointed them out in the cold case too. Alas, no more New Britain Bev Mart but at least this store, Middletown, and Wallingford are still around, and I think they've got it all.

While I enjoy shopping here, I do prefer the Milford location when it comes to the craft beer singles selections. A big downside was at checkout. I had just gotten a new phone and hadn't finished setting up my Apple Wallet, so paying took a little longer than expected. Unfortunately, the cashier didn't seem very patient, which made the interaction feel a bit rushed and weird. Next time I'm in the area I'll just hold off and stop by the one in Milford which is on the way home for me anyway.

Since I was at Trader Joe's this morning, I decided to walk over to Total Wine & More in the same…read moremall, to check it out. Wow, what a fantastic selection of wines ! Red wine is basically the only alcohol I consume nowadays, pinot noir specifically. So I nabbed two bottles after spending a decent amount of time looking over the extensive stock they carried of pinot noir. A long wait at the register to pay for my purchases though, only one cashier was open this morning. But I'll be enjoying some wine later tonight, so Life is good !
