This is an amazing yarn shop! We were visiting from Utah and I had some free time and the weather was beautiful so we found this shop on yelp and decided to take the drive! Suggestions go when it's daylight so you can take in the beautiful surrounding- it's a winding ride but breathtaking! Located in a residential area in a majesty building! Full of natural light so you can see the true color of the beautiful yarn. They have a few looms out and the selection of yarn is amazing. The owner is very helpful and informative! I picked up some wool fiber and yarn. She knows where all her fibers and yarns are from and can help you with all your questions - you will not regret he drive or the time spent at the shop! Andrea is an amazing teacher. Her presence is warm, she knows a ton about all sorts of fiber arts, she is really helpful whenever you are in need of it, but also will let you do your own thing, and finally very generous with her time and knowledge! She not only taught me how to weave (I came in knowing nothing), but also helped me understand what you can do with weaving, different kinds of looms, different kinds of yarns, and a mix of skills and theory. Amazing Yarns specializes in interesting yarns that have a unique story behind them. This can mean that they're hand-dyed, sourced from local farms, or have really interesting textures. Andrea has many examples in the shop of advanced projects for any weaver, knitter, or crocheter. If you ever want to learn how to weave or learn new techniques, you should totally totally talk to her! (ditto for knitting and crocheting and dyeing) This place is a secret hidden gem of the Bay Area. I would leave a six-star review if possible! read more

Yarn yarn yarn! Ya-ah! (to the tune of the Thompson Twins, of course) Last weekend I had So Much Fun. I hit three new (well, new to me) yarn stores and OD'd on so much yummy yarn goodness! The second one of my weekends was Amazing Yarns. I'd never even heard of Emerald Hills before I head out, but I was meeting a friend in Redwood City and Yelp told me there was this yarn shop nearby. The review below that comments about the residential neighbourhood is dead on. Take a GPS with you so you don't get lost, and yes the store is in a (huge) residential house. I actually got there, was confused, called the store and said "where are you located?" and when she said she could give me directions I admitted to being outside a residential home that looked like a big log cabin. She said "that's us, come on in!" The ambiance here is great - very homey, with looms set up and yarn can be found on the lower level as well as upstairs. The owner told me that a lot of the yarn is spun and/or dyed just for her, so a lot of exclusive stuff. And the prices do go along with that, although I will say that the small amount of commercial yarn she had (Cascade 220 for instance) was priced close to other yarn stores I've been to. I liked that when I explained I was trying to match yarn to a special bunch of skeins I'd bought the day earlier, she gave me a sample to take home and knit of the yarn I was thinking might work - and let me pre-order it from her with the right to cancel if it didn't work out for me. And since she didn't have the yarn in the store at the time, she was willing to mail it to me free of charge. All of that speaks to excellent customer service. Minus one star for not being more clear on the website about the location (leading to some confusion and consternation on the way in), and for not having any area set aside that really made it seem like people were welcome to come and just hang out and knit. I particularly like yarn shops to be welcoming of that. I learn so much when I get a chance to just hang out with more experienced knitters! I will definitely swing by again in the future if I'm in the area, but I doubt I'll be making many trips up that way specifically to shop there. read more

I went here on recommendation from a knitting instructor. I went to the website first. It states very clearly that you should call first for directions and hours. I called and the owner was very friendly and thorough in giving directions. We found it with no problems. We took our two children (ages 5 and 1) and the owner was very friendly and welcoming to them, my husband, and to me. She welcomed us to look around and come find her if we needed any help. The place it amazing--stocked with gorgeous hand made yarns, custom yarns made just for her, and some well known yarns. The walls and banisters (all hand built) are lined with lovely hand knitted items. It was a very cool experience. We sought her out and asked her some questions about yarns, about her store, about the house itself. She was very friendly and wanted to share her story. She chatted with our children and discussed needles and yarn with me. We told her what kind of project I was working on and she didn't seem put back by my wanting a less expensive yarn for a simple project. My husband explained what kind of color he'd like it to be--and she knew exactly what he wanted and dug around finding a PERFECT yarn matching my husband's request. I really enjoyed shopping here. There should be more reviews of this store! Amazing Yarns surpasses the quality, variety and quantity of the yarns at the shop I used to worked at. The folks there are also really nice. They will spend the time to explain the yarn to you and also introduce new fibers. Rabbit fur yarn anyone? O.M.G.ess. Natural yarns you will not find anyplace else. Andrea rocks the place, and gives fantastic advice. Special orders cheerfully and promptly dealt with. The place carries Addi Natura needles (yummy smooth needles with a life time guarantee). The place itself is beautiful and unforgetable. Wish I could live here. Minus one star due to not being open 24/7 (check shop hours before you go). Grab a fish taco at the place down the hill on your way back to wherever you're going. I hereby christen this store as my favorite yarn shop ever! First, you get an adventure, wandering up and down Emerald Hills. The scenic views alone are more than worth the visit. Then there's the proprietress, who is as friendly and knowledgeable as they come. And then the yarn. If you're interested in the locavore movement, from a fiber perspective, you won't be disappointed ( she even sources cashmere from Castor Valley...yum). The store is located in a huge two story wooden cabin, complete with its own waterfall; and each room is filled with fascinating cottons, squishy alpacas, and dreamy cashmere. The prices were ridiculously fair given the craftsmanship ; don't come expecting a discount, but come expecting an amazing experience. On your way out, you may even catch a glimpse of deer. What a fantastic surprise this place is! In short, this place focuses on the unique - from the location down to the selection. I agree that getting there is an adventure. I, too, had to call from very near the driveway to make sure I was in the right place (after calling ahead to make sure they were open). It's an absolutely gorgeous house, and the only signage is a letter sized piece of paper on the door, which isn't visible from the street. I can't even say I was annoyed, because the the place just has a magical kind of feel. I was greeted at the door by Andrea, one of the owners, who was so incredibly knowledgable and helpful. I told her what I was looking for, and she helped me find the absolutely perfect combination of hand-painted yarns to get the gauge, drape and color I was going for. She was even careful to send me to the spot with the best light and encouraged me to pick my individual skeins from each colorway, to ensure that the colors were exactly what I wanted. They do not have a super-store sized selection, but really focuses on high quality, beautiful and hand-crafted yarns. They do have a selection of old faves, like Brown Sheep and Cascade, but the majority of their yarns are hand-dyed natural fibers. They're even very locally sourced, wherever possible. As wonderful as the selection is, the customer service is really what puts it over the top. Andrea helped me along when I needed help, left me alone when I needed to ponder, and told me that they can custom spin or dye just about anything I needed. I will definitely return to Amazing Yarns for my next project, and I'll probably take them up on the custom-dyed yarn as well! read more

While visiting my daughter in Menlo Park yesterday, we went on an "adventure" to find Amazing Yarns. We wound around streets as we climbed Emerald Hills wondering how we could possibly be in the vicinity of a yarn shop. What a beautiful area and when we came to the address we had plugged into the GPS we wondered whether we had been on a wild goose chase. We were in front of a ski lodge-like dwelling and decided that before we unbuckle my 21 month old granddaughter, I should walk up the rock stairway to the front door and make sure we were at the right place. I walked in and was greeted by a very nice gentleman who asked me if I wanted to look at yarn. I learned they were actually closed for business yesterday but he allowed us to come in anyway. I was a bit embarrassed as I felt like I had just let myself in to someone's private residence. The owner of the shop was very nice and just allowed us to wander but also asked us if we were looking for something in particular. I have to say her yarns were "amazing". My granddaughter wasn't in the best of moods (yarn just isn't her thing...yet). Therefore we didn't stay long but just long enough for me to buy some Addi's. This shop is in a 3 story log cabin and is absolutely gorgeous! The shop owner is highly knowledgeable and friendly! Most of the yarns are locally made by artisans so their beauty is captivating. I loved hearing about which yarns come from which area. Her prices are right on target with other fine yarns that I have purchased. My only regret was in not asking about this one shawlette I had seen because the pattern was so nice! I'll probably just have to go back! ;). Oh darn. :) read more

This yarn shop is the best in the area. Andrea is VERY helpful and they have beautiful yarns, alot are hand dyed by them. She and her partner (forgot his name, sorry) are both very helpful. They leave you alone if you need it or they are there for answering questions if you need that. They answer immediately thru email too. Was looking for a yarn swift to purchase and Andrea, thru email, offered to let me use theirs in the shop. Their shop is gorgeously placed in a fantastic wooden cabin up in Emerald Hills. Make sure to call first to get directions, otherwise finding it thru mapquest or google maps is almost impossible. Have gotten lost a couple of times. They are usually open every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday but call first to make sure. read more

This store is like no other yarn store I've ever been in. I was sure my navigational system was completely confused, but fortunately, my companion wouldn't give up on finding this place. The owner offers yarns that are both unusual and stunningly beautiful - yarns that I've never seen before. It was fascinating, and I had real difficultly in limiting myself to only one project. I lived in this area for over 20 years before I ever found this wonderful and, yes, "amazing" place. I heard there was a yarn shop here and one day decided to find it. Wow, what a charming, delicious, place it is. It would be rather difficult to find for someone not in the area as Emerald Hills can be confusing to drive around. However it is worth the effort and you will absolutely love the owner and all of the help there. They have a wonderful selection of yarns that will have you drooling and you will feel very calm and peaceful in the environment! Don't miss this place if you love yarn! read more
