What stands out is the school's genuine dedication to each student and family. Their mission to foster a love of learning and compassion for others, centered in faith, is evident everywhere. Academically, we have seen our daughter thrive and progress by leaps and bounds in this nurturing environment. First, we were impressed by the responsiveness of the staff and the clear focus on academics. While we moved to Palos Verdes for the schools, of which I am an alum, we have been so much happier at SJF. We found that the teachers are truly devoted to their students, and they pay attention to whole child development. Teachers go above and beyond responding to parents' concerns. Not only does the school foster intellectual development, but they also have community service requirements as well as service to each other and various athletic programs. And check out those drama productions - they are entertaining even if you do not have a child participating! Both of my daughters have been at their happiest at SJF. They both have smaller classes where everyone is a friend. I love coming to volunteer and seeing all of the grades interacting, and all students helping each other out. My oldest has even developed such an affinity for Mass that she goes during the week in the summer. It is a special place.

The school has an excellent academic program. The curriculum was carefully researched and designed based on best-of-breed programs from private high schools and universities across the country. Classes are rigorous and the faculty is knowledgeable and very focused on the learning environment. We've observed how our daughter has quickly become comfortable seeking out her teachers when she has questions, attending office hours, and becoming a strong self-advocate. Great skills to have for both college and life. One of the most amazing things about the school is the strong culture that Vistamar has created. While the pressure of academics is part of the experience, much of it is neutralized by the strong sense of community and support across both faculty and students. It's an environment that has been really beneficial to our daughter, because it's one that encourages kids to take risks and try new things. She's discovered areas of passion that she may never have found had she not been at Vistamar. Again, something that we want our kids to find at this age so that they can have it for the rest of their lives. The school also does an excellent job bringing students together from different backgrounds and points of view and, through the culture they've created, enable them to build relationships and work together. Group learning and group activities are a big part of the learning culture which help develop skills that will last a long time. The actual school building can be a bit surprising when you look at it from the outside. It's much more of the converted-warehouse-tech-company sort of look than the green-campus-boarding-school. But step inside and watch how the kids work and interact with the environment. It's designed in a way where students and faculty are constantly interacting and creates a comfortable environment where you will often see students lingering well into the evening.

(My other daughter attended a different high school that was the perfect fit for her.) Vistamar is a unique and special school. Its most important characteristic is their intentionality. They have carefully thought through each part of a high school and made intentional choices to build a different and excellent small high school that allows each child to bring their individuality to school every day. The intentionality comes up in both large (why they offer Spanish and Chinese in their language program and require students to pass an oral proficiency language exam in order to graduate) and small (the temperature in the building) ways. You will not find a more enthusiastic and dedicated faculty. Their math program is incredibly strong that is joyfully brought to life by amazing teachers. Their high-level Humanities curriculum requires engagement with great and challenging literature like The Odyssey. My daughter, who wants to be a doctor, has taken advantage of the robust science offerings. All of this is wrapped by two key principals: (a) small class sizes that allow the faculty to know your student and (b) the idea that "there are no spectators" in learning. Your students will be challenged and engaged. As for extracurricular activities, this small school has a number of great opportunities for students. On their sports program, you are not going to have Friday Night Lights football. But what I appreciate about their program is that students are encouraged to try new activities. They have a "no cut" policy when it comes to sports. Their program is built to inspire students to build good, long-term, healthy lifestyle habits and find opportunities to go outside their comfort zone, as well as make new friends. On college prep, the school has built a system that prepares students to be successful in college, while not making the students feel pressurized by the college application process. The school does not want to have students focus their entire high school time on getting into college. The counseling team works closely with each student to ensure that they get into the college that is the best fit for them. As someone who has worked in education for most of my career and as someone who has seen the joy in my daughter's eyes when she talks about her school, I cannot recommend this excellent and innovative high school strongly enough.

Since my last review, we have had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hofmann in 1st grade, Ms. Nakae in 2nd grade, and currently Ms. Flores in 3rd. We have enjoyed all of them as teachers. Mrs. Hughes is still going strong as the kindergarten teacher as well. We also have a new principal this year, Mr. Kim. Mr. Kim has truly been an amazing leader so far. I am so grateful to have him at our school. The office staff is also wonderful. Our school community may be small, but it is filled with families, staff, and teachers who truly care about making these children's elementary and junior high experience a great one. Nothing ever stays the same, and that is okay! We are fully embracing the positive changes that are happening at St James. My baby daughter was in PICU & I was coming from the hospital to drop off my older daughter for a…read morefield trip at the school. I was 10 minutes late so the school gave away my daughter's spot away & also refused to return my trip money. I tried to explain that I was coming from the hospital but they still refused. They didn't want to 'disappoint the child' who they gave my daughter's spot to. They didn't care about disappointing my daughter, who had been looking forward to the trip all week. They then accused me of 'arguing with the teacher' & gave me a warning. The people who run this place are horrible & heartless. They will steal any money you pay them (this is only one of several instances). If you have any concerns about anything going on with your child, you are not 'allowed' to voice them or they will kick you out of the school. Bend over & take it. You have no voice as a parent. If you leave, they will keep any tuition money you've paid. Only if they kick you out will you get it back. I highly advise you send your kids elsewhere. They are a nightmare. Seriously, I'm warning you, DON'T go to this school. We then went over to Pine's Christian- night & day difference. They are wonderful. Highly, highly recommend you go there.

We had the greatest experience here for both our children as the staff has done a great job in fostering an environment for kids to grow, while also allowing them to be kids. I grew up in suburban America with great schools and a big community emphasis. Seeing my kids go through the program here reminded me a lot of my childhood. I read another review from a parent complaining about hickory having structure for the kids. The truth is, kids need structure. They need to learn manners and how to play with others. Michelle Obama said it best when she said her parents raised her to eventually be an an adult one day. I personally don't think I'm doing any favors to my kids if I'm not preparing them to be an adult in this world. In todays fast past environment, so often are values lost and forgotten that it was really nice for our family to be able to allow our kids to also have that for their early schooling. They allow kids to be kids while still learning boundaries along with curriculum to keep them ahead academically. We found Pac Lu during the middle of a transition from overseas due to a family medical crisis…read more Pac Lu was absolutely a gift from God for my teenage daughters as a safe harbor during a very tough time in life. The staff were supportive all around - for academic and spiritual needs. They provided well-organized academic instruction, good moral and character development, positive adult mentors, and Biblical Christian instruction. Both daughters found good friends and enjoyed the family atmosphere of Pac Lu. As a family with cross-cultural experience, we really appreciated the diversity of Pac Lu within a small student and faculty. Across the board, the admin and teaching staff were dedicated and caring. They daily went above and beyond their work hours in their efforts to support students and provide in-classroom opportunities as well as extracurricular activities. We were with PacLu during the pandemic and PacLu was ahead of the curve in figuring out how to transition to online teaching as well as prepare for a safe return to in-person instruction. When my girls and I talked to friends at other schools, we realized that Pac Lu was more organized and efficient than most other schools at that time. True, the school is small. The positive side of that is that parents are able to easily keep in touch with the school and student progress through open communication with admin and staff as well as an excellent online grading and report system. The downside is that activities are limited with a small student body. However, they have a spacious enough campus with lots of outdoor recreation areas as well as cool resources such as a 3D printer, maker/tinker space, a large computer lab and art classroom. Their tuition is very affordable (compared to the other South Bay private Christian schools) and we were happy to fulfill more than the requested amount of parent volunteer hours to support the school. Pac Lu's goal is to mentor students from 6th-12th grade and they love when families will stay for the long run. Even though our family couldn't stay for the long run, but we still hold Pac Lu and the people we met there very dear in our hearts.
