Get in, loser. We're going flying.

The short version: if you're in the area and have the time, then you should absolutely visit. The longer version: Amelia Earhart was a fascinating, intrepid, brilliant woman with an insatiable appetite for adventure. Her life, from early curious Kansas kid to a national aviation icon, is a whirlwind of accomplishments and notoriety. It's simply stunning what she experienced and how she inspired cadres of youths, both girls and boys, to seek adventure, break barriers, and aim higher. And she was gone by 37! The hangar houses a full-on Lockheed Electra 10E (nicknamed 'Muriel' in remembrance of Amelia's sister) with dozens of interactive exhibits that are chock-full of history, sensational female pioneers, and much more. The exhibits are scaled for that touchy/feely of children to the awe and wonder of adult visitors, definitely heightening the experience for all ages. From early 20th century American history blended with early aviation endeavors, the information just spills over at every turn. You can go through this facility in an hour, easily, but there is just so much great stuff that you could double that amount of time. She wasn't just a great Kansan, Amelia was an inspiring woman, a courageous spirit, and an inspiring and enduring figure. Adults can visit for $15, and there are military discounts and child rates as well. All of that is money well-spent, celebrating a bygone era of adventure into the unknown and the amazing figures who were brave enough to blaze their paths. Adventure awaits!

They have done an excellent job making this museum interactive. There are many exhibits to pique your curiosity and educate at the same time. This would be a cool museum to visit when it's blazing hot outside. The gift shop has many unique items as well. I especially loved the rivet competition. Once I got the hang of it, I tied my husband. He immediately walked away and wouldn't go another round--because he knew I was going to beat him! Don't skip the flight simulator! It's worth the $5. Will you land in Paris? Will you land in a cow pasture? Try it and find out!!!

    Plane mock up.

There are also sensory stations that encourage imagination and creative exploration. A brand-new indoor water area is set to open on June 10th, which will be an exciting addition. The outdoor space is just as impressive, featuring nature trails, a sandbox, water play area, treehouse, bikes, and more. We especially appreciated the separate toddler-only zones that keep the littlest ones safe while they play. With so much to do, we easily spent around 3 hours exploring. You're welcome to pack a lunch and enjoy it at one of the indoor picnic tables or outside in the peaceful pollinator garden. Highly recommend for a fun, interactive, and affordable family outing!

There are many activities that entertain kids and I would say up to ten maybe. Some of the areas included were painting, grocery store, a car repair shop, restaurant, water feature, air flow type activities, small area for toddlers, outdoor activities, blocks, plus many more things. I like that adults have to be with children in order to enter. We decided to go ahead and get a year long membership. With the membership I could put my grandchildren on it and they can even go with their parents if we are not with them at no charge. There are also workers spread throughout the area who are so very kind and do a great job at keeping the place picked up and organized.

Kids climbing, laughing, and embracing each one with an eye of awe. I learned about the author of story My Fathers Dragon and it was fascinating. So much so I went to the bookshop to buy a copy, along with other books and prints. And that's where such a beautiful experience went south. When I asked the two girls working in the shop about a book and a limited-series print, they were incredibly curt with me. They condescendingly told me I had already passed the book, making me feel like I had done something wrong. It instantly reminded me of when your mom gets frustrated with you simply because you don't know the answer to a question you're asking. It's a shame that such a breathtaking museum experience was bookended by such dismissive customer service in the retail shop. Go for the magic of the exhibits, but be prepared for a cold reception at checkout.

This encyclopedic museum was built in the 1930s in a traditional beaux arts style. The original 1930s building is just as stunning today as it was 90 years ago. The original courtyard has been modified and transformed into a restaurant, but aside from that it remains largely untouched. In the 2000s the museum expanded with the Bloch building - an architectural marvel all it's own. Drive by at night to see each lens lit up. Currently they are working on another expansion, that will bring the museum into the modern era. I've spent so much time here it's ridiculous. From exploring as a child with my grandmother, to my time as a student, to exploring now as an adult there is really something here for just about anyone. Being an encyclopedic museum it features art from across the world and spanning the timeline of humanity. You can use the Nelson as a launching pad for discussing nearly any moment in time through the lens of art, which is really an impressive feat for a midsize city like KC. Some of my favorite pieces include a relic with the "finger bone" of st. John the Baptist (it's likely a chicken bone), "Woman IV" by Willem de Kooning, "Boulevard des Capucines" by Claude Monet, and "Persephone" by Thomas Hart Benton. This is the place I take all of my guests, and the place I come to when I need to reset or recharge myself. It's always beautiful, always therapeutic, and always FREE. I'm not sure folks really understand the incredible gift we have as a community to have access to this incredible place. My top KC treasure, and I hope every person gets a chance to visit someday.

It's unfortunate that such a culturally significant and visually appealing place is staffed by people who ruin the experience.
