There were hundreds of books to browse through and I ended up getting two giant zoology books for only $3 total. Transaction was quick and they had plenty of change in case you had bigger bills (unsure if they do credit card). They had everything from art and how-to draw books all the way to giant books for school (math, biology, etc). I was pleasantly surprised by the selections.

Wandering around Kent, Writer Friend and I found the mother lode of used books. Unfortunately, it…read morewas one of the hottest days of the year, and they had decided to close down early because of the heat. We were quite disappointed, but from what we could see, literally thousands of books in both stalls outside, and on shelfs hidden inside the building. The woman in charge (apparently) apologized to us, and WF introduced herself, since she's on the board of the library association in our town. That didn't get us a peek at the stacks, but a new friend was made. They are open through October, so there's another trip planned in the near future. We need to remember to park close enough (and bring lots of bags) so we don't have to carry our purchases very far.

Erin is warm, welcoming and wonderful with children, and the storytime is something my daughter and I look forward to every week. We sing songs, read a couple stories, and then do coloring or other crafts. I haven't really explored the rest of the library, but absolutely recommend the children's library and programming.

I mean you don't come for hip wifi or the latest DVDs. However, they do have a few working computers to use and a DVD selection. Unlike libraries in the areas I've lived where they need to sort of keep up with the demands of the current times, this library will appease them but not break their backs doing so. That is not to say they are without a good inventory, they could alone stock the library with local authored novels. It is really about culture here, they will exhibit contemporary photography and general visual art from locals (which can even include high profile people like Roz Chast) and such a caliber is held with the children's section as well. The outside is also really soothing and to see into the rustic windows. It's something that is easy to underestimate until you've been surrounded by an urban environment where the trees are decorative markers. I think it's a really lovely library that meets the standards of knowledge and pride of the state within their walls. It's hip to be square.

So after hitting the Yale Center for British Art, we speed walked (sped walked?) over to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Why? Google it and you'll understand when you see the pictures. Beinicke is Yale's rare book and manuscript library - not their main university library or their law library. The reading room is open to registered researchers only, but the public are welcome to visit the library's exhibition hall. And everyone visiting New Haven should! The library was built in 1963, and the the architecture is incredible. The building is a granite veneer shell, fastened to a structural steel frame. Inside that structure is a glass-enclosed tower of book cases. The granite was milled to 1.25 inches thick to allow filtered daylight in - in the afternoon/early evening, the marble turned an amber color. We walked back past it at night for a different view of the building. It is really incredible architecture, and the library hosts exhibits you can see in the exhibition hall when you visit to enjoy the building (when we visited, the exhibit was "Taught By the Pen: The World of Islamic Manuscripts"). The building is incredible and definitely worth a visit if you're exploring the Yale campus!

The general public has limited access, and this will be a short stop for most people, depending upon the exhibit. Let's be honest--most people stop by for a photo op, for the architecture and the huge column of books. I got a few great photos, got to say I've seen it, and it's cool. Worthwhile. I did not expect to find the Farmington library as part of a larger town government complex. If I…read morewere a betting person, I'd blame the seventies. The outside of the building is very austere and gray. There is a fair amount of parking available, so watch out for pedestrians. The building itself is huge; there is a map in the lobby and it is helpful. The lobby has so much on its own - a used book sales area, movies, space to sit.... There used to be (if memory serves over several years) a coffee station but now holds maps for planning information. There is, off the lobby, also a whimsical duck statue. The Friends of the library do a book sale once a year. On the last day, it starts as a normal sale, and in the afternoon goes to $10 per bag you fill with books. There is a gap between those two sales, and a place to queue until the bag sale opens. You're not going to pull one over on the Friends and sneak in as the first part of the sale ends. You'll be asked to wait outside.

The area was large and it's on the left side when you enter from the main entrance. There were two Librarian who were friendly. My toddler wanted to play with the trains set but you have to get the trains from them. After you're done, just return them to the librarians. They are also participating in the 1000 books before Kindergarten program like Simsbury library is doing. You read to your child and each milestone (ie. 100 books read), you get a free book. I think it's neat that they let you borrow bags of toys. There are computers with educational games for the kids. There is a storytime area that has a painting of a large dragon and puppets to play with. A play kitchen is also available to play with. Overall, a great spot to bring your toddlers and older kids, because there's a tween area too.

Norfolk library is truly a special place and worth a trip just to see the beautiful building. The…read morelibrary has a wide offering of books, new releases and classics, as well as current movies and TV series. But it's not the books or DVDs that make it so special. Rather it's the stunning building and interior spaces where you can read a newspaper or do work. For kids, the children's room is also quite special with a mini fort and plenty of toys and stuffed animals. Overall, the library has a small town feel - the front desk staff are welcoming and provide any info you might want on things to do in town.
