Update - it got worse. When leaving the building to go to the next part of the tour, the guide did…read morenot wait for me. I took the elevator down and they just took the group on the stairs and took off without waiting. So I had to leave. I took the issue to admissions and they had nothing to say. If you have any mobility needs don't go here. Nope! Came here for a campus visit and the guide mumbled something and then took the group off at a fast pace, to climb three (or four) flights to the lecture room. Zero access for people with disabilities. I raised with them (as it was not accessible for us) and the first question asked was "did you fill out the form for people with disabilities?" Yes we did. But that is all you got? They say in other reviews that this college is too "woke." How about not woke enough?

Alas, I did not have my library card on my person...I did have my bank debit card with my name but this was not worthy of establishing my identity according to the librarian. She even said to me "I don't know you" a la Mariah Carey (Made my day!) and gave me the door. I am most happy and rest easily to know that this cherub is single handedly protecting the precious books of Stone Ridge from potential thieves.

We were fortunate to come on a day they had a Revcon event, a reenactment and activities to celebrate our 250th birthday. They had a schedule for the day with oxen, butter making, historical games and information, a reenactment with musket, etc. Additionally we did a self-guided tour (45 minutes) of the house because it was the weekend; I think a guided tour would have been nice to get more tid bits. Unless you have a national park pass, there's a cost for the house and the museum. If you only want to do one, I'd personally choose the museum. The museum was very well done and interesting to walk through. It's a good size and you go through his life, presidency and Eleanor too. Stop into Hyde Park for a bite too.

I think the combination of these two things made for a great visit, because I felt like I learned a lot which made my experience more enjoyable. The museum is extensive, and even had a small section devoted to his little dog. There is rather sizable section for Eleanor as well, and a lovely statue of them both sitting on a park bench on the grounds. It was an excellent way to spend a rainy afternoon in the area!

As an undergraduate, I was an English major, concentrating in literature, The English program there is underrated, in my humble opinion. Marist is known as a communications/business/fashion school, and rightfully so as those programs are incredible. However, it should get more attention for its awesome little English department, staffed by some of the most amazing educators I've had in my 19 years of schooling. I was an avid reader before, but they completely changed my outlook on literature and ultimately inspired me to pursue becoming a professor myself. I returned later on to get my Masters in Education there. It's a young program (I think I may have been the second or third class?) so it's not perfect, but I also think that education is a hard subject to teach without hands-on experience, which they ultimately do require. Again, I was mentored by some awesome educators, so what more can you ask for from a college? Oh, and I did live on campus for three semesters. My first dorm, Champagnat, was renovated a year or two after I was there, so I don't have anything constructive to say about it since I haven't been in there since '01. My second dorm, a suite in Midrise, was nice. I know they were featured on a morning show about the luxury of their dorms, so there you go. The cafeteria is decent, the cafes around campus are good, they have a kickin' activities center and the library... oh, the library. I'll be here for another 8 paragraphs if I go into the awesomeness of the library, so I'll just say that I spent many a relaxing afternoon by a big window overlooking the Hudson reading the 47389423489 books assigned to me as an English major. Ah, Marist. Good times. I miss you.

Nice grounds to walk around and picnic as well as gardens and a mansion from the gilded age…read more Arriving on a Saturday afternoon, parking was a a breeze and grounds were open. We just missed the 3 pm Mansion tour (free with national park pass) so waited an hour for the next one. We walked over to the garden area and saw some roses and other flowers, all 5,000 varieties planted by volunteers and staying true to the types back in time. Two friendly volunteers were stationed there, readEra, chat and provide information. The mansion tour was informative and interesting, largely due to the ranger tour guide. If you like history or that era, you'll likely enjoy the tidbits shared. There aren't many places to sit inside the house and even I had a hard time standing for so long after a long day. They did have elevator access for those who have trouble with mobility. The info center doesn't have a store anymore but has a few artifacts.

3/18/26: The Vanderbilt Mansion is a must see when visiting Hyde Park!…read more You first drive up a winding driveway, till you reach the visitor's center to purchase tickets. Should you have a National Service Park Pass, you'll be able to enter for free. It's best to call at 9 AM just to be sure there's availability. Inside the center, you'll find restrooms and a large display of the Vanderbilt family tree. Our docent Mike first started the tour at the visitor center. Mike was very knowledgeable and had wonderful wit. The visitor center used to be the guest house for Mrs. Vanderbilt's bachelor friends during their stay over. Mike walked us over to the main estate. The outside of the estate is stunning. We then entered the beautiful estate. All the furnishings are absolutely gorgeous. The last part of the tour is walking down the servants stairs. However, the best photo view is probably looking up from the bottom of the staircase. Hope you enjoy the photos. Photos are allowed, but without flash.
