This year a friend and I went with the little ones in tow and it was incredibly underwhelming. Upon entrance we were given a ticket and because we're newbies we did a stupid thing and went to the booth, where the guy tried a hard sell to get us to sign up for a weekend at one of their properties. As we walked around to the other booths, it was little more than picking up travel brochures from a bunch of booths. There was a section that had several folks selling cruises, which we skipped altogether. There were a surprising number of Native American nations represented, which was pretty cool. But besides Croatia (a major sponsor) and maybe Ireland (I think--we passed a booth that I think was Ireland) there were no European countries here. Alaska had a booth, as well as maybe one Arizonan community and a Montana booth, and beyond those there was no one west of Oklahoma. There were a lot of midwestern and southern towns. A smattering of Asian and African countries, plus one or two from South America. Some speakers were presenting throughout the day. There were a couple of giveaways, one to the Apostle Islands that I actually entered because I've long wanted to visit (not a winner though). But we left with a lot of stickers for the babes, so if that is a sign of success then I guess it was a good day. One thing that surprised me was that the speakers are pretty accessible. I thought that some of the more prominent ones would be in separate rooms that required you to wait in line for an hour before the doors opened to get a seat, but that wasn't the case. So Andrew McCarthy and Rick Steves would practically be up close and personal. Might I go again? Well, if my friend wanted to then yeah, I might. It's better than sitting at home and it's something to do if the kids are willing. But don't go expecting to find a large swath of places throughout the world to help plan your next vacation.

My good friend called me from New York where she was stuck trying to get on a flight to Chicago. After my failed attempts at finding a flight on-line I called Adriana at Nitti...they are open by 9:30 on Saturdays! Within, literally, a minute, she had my friend booked on a flight with an actual seat that would arrive by the time she needed to be in town...and for less than 1/2 the price of all the flights I could find! They were so patient while we made up our minds to travel and made everything so easy, offering a lot of recommendations and staying within our budget. Geri Costello was a dream travel agent. Excellence riviera cancun was a dream resort, and the honeymoon suites at the excellence club were insane! We can't wait to book another vacation next year with Janus travel. The getting to/from the airport and excursions with lomas travel was a breeze and affordable. We had no issues with the timeshare stands in the airport. Leaving can in was a bit of a mess to check in, it took about 45 min to just get checked in to give them baggage, but that wasn't an issue as we got to the airport 3 hours before we flew home. We got a free honeymoon package that we booked and showed them our marriage certificate to use. You can view the types of options on the excellence website. The resort- it's like something you see in movies. We had a private concierge for the excellence club guests, and a pool and bar area exclusively to that part of the resort. Our room was fantastic, we loved it. We arrived to fresh flowers, champagne, fresh fruit, and towel swans with rose petals on the bed. The room was huge, all the amenities (bar, TV, shower, sitting area, hammock, our door tub, and outdoor bed ) were all exactly as described. We walked onto the patio and there was a two person tub on one side (the jets didn't work, but that's ok) a bed in the shade on the other side and a hammock directly in front. There was a bed in partial shade in from of that, and fresh towels set on it every morning for swimming. The pool was 4 feet from the outdoor bed, so we could lay out and then jump in. The pools closed at 8 which was odd, but it didn't bother us too much. The room was cleaned twice a day, and we had people come to give us fruit, refill the mini bar, and put petit fours in our room every day. Our bed and shower were so comfortable, the only weird thing was a not very private toilet, it just had a glass frosted door, and you could hear everything from there, haha. We could eat breakfast as early as 7am at the private concierge if we had to leave early for an excursion at 7:45 and didn't have time to go to the breakfast buffet. The concierge would also take our large peso bills and exchange them for smaller for us. The restaurants and bars were great, and we had no trouble getting drinks by the pool. The drinks were delicious, and so was the food. The weather was perfect every single day, cooler in the morning, very hot in the afternoon (so we'd swim and tan) and cooler but breezy and wonderful by 6-7 at night. The beach had some seaweed but they cleaned it up every day and honestly didn't bother us in the ocean. (Which is typical for that part of Mexico and Geri let us know about in advance). They had fun activities and shows every night, and we loved the Mayan show and the Mexican fiesta night. On our last night we went to an all white themed dinner buffet on the beach lit up by lanterns and with live music. We upgraded our honeymoon dinner on the beach from the honeymoon package for $200 for a private dinner on the pier, and the pier right next to it had a harp player on it throughout our private fancy dinner. The champagne and wine was plentiful and the service was amazing. He even took some pictures of us on the pier which was so nice. We used our honeymoon hydrotherapy and foot massage spa treatment and upgraded to add a 25 min couples back massage. It was so relaxing and the spa beautiful. The service everywhere on the resort was incredible. We took excursions with lomas travel (recommended by Geri) to akumal to swim/snorkel with sea turtles and see an a over ground/open cenote, a trip sailing on a catamaran to isla mujeres and snorkel at the underwater museum of art, and a trip to chichen itza and an ecopark with a cenote and lunch included. 3 trips in 7 days was plenty. We explored playa del Carmen on our own one afternoon. I always felt safe, the only annoyance was the vendors who could be a bit pushy and follow you around the store- but My husband was good at bartering and deflecting them. It was amazing and perfect. While there are all kinds of websites & apps to use, having a great travel agent is worth its weight in gold! All is fine on a trip until trouble appears. With a travel agent, you have a REAL LIVE PERSON to call if you run into a snag! A great travel agent like Vicky knows all the tricks and shortcuts that can really bump your trip up to the next level. Having her expertise at the tip of your fingers can provide solutions to problems. Covid restrictions change frequently. She's up to date on the requirements, not just for where you're starting your trip, but also for your trip's destination! What if someone in your party falls ill? What if you miss a connecting flight? THOSE are situations when a seasoned travel agent like Vicky can come to your rescue. Vacations can take many twists & turns. It's the situations that you CAN'T predict, that Vicky can assist with. For example, in 2012, I took my 78 year old mother-in-law to Puerto Rico. The first 3 days were great but unfortunately mom came down with a stomach issue requiring hospitalization. Luckily, Vicky was by our side (via phone) every step of the way! She rebooked our return flight which had to be delayed until mom was better. What was a language barrier for me (as I only speak English) was no problem for Vicky who is multi-lingual. She's a godsend. She's been our treasured travel agent for over 30 years! She goes out of her way to make sure everything goes smoothly before, during and after your trip. She's the BEST!
