Before I went in, I called the owner, Ron, for some information. He told me to bring in our coins and he'd take a look at what we had. Prior to this, I had done some research and purchased a couple of books to try to get a rough approximation of what the coins were worth, but wanted to get a professional opinion. Ron definitely knew his stuff; he's been into coins since he was a kid, and his knowledge was very apparent. He went through my coin inventory, gave me prices he'd pay if we were interested in selling, talked shop for a bit, and didn't charge me a dime. If we do decide to sell anything, he'll be the first place I go. And if you're interested in buying, he has a nice inventory of coins for purchase. In fact, I'll be going back in one of these days to buy a few things to add to my collection.

His wife answers the doorbell and assists with paperwork and some jewelry assessments, but during my almost hour-long wait with my sister, I only saw her look at one piece of jewelry that came in. All coin transactions with customers looking to sell are managed by Mike. When we finally met with him, he spent over 20 minutes explaining why he would not be purchasing our Morgan and Peace Dollars. It wasn't because they were fake; rather, my sister had purchased them from the Bradford Exchange, and while they were in "PCGS type" holders, Mike noticed that many coins were cleaned, which devalues them significantly. He was very kind and even suggested that we take them to a coin show. Mike also mentioned that if I bring in items that require closer inspection, I should make an appointment. He indicated that appointments take priority. This is truly a "Mom and Pop" establishment, and you should expect to wait a long time. They are upfront about this and may ask you to return later if possible because the shop is small, has no seating, and wait times can be lengthy. This is the only reason I rated it four stars. I found Mike to be friendly and attentive, taking the time to ensure that every customer who walked in understood why he would or would not purchase the items they presented. I can not comment on his inventory because the day I came, we was so busy with sellers he didn't even have a chance to put any coins out on his displays.

After placing a large order, more than two weeks passed without any shipping update. It took three separate requests before I finally received a tracking number. Tyler assured me my package would arrive the following Tuesday, but when I checked the tracking information myself, it showed that only a shipping label had been created. The carrier had not yet received the package. Because of the delay and conflicting information, I requested to cancel my order. Tyler told me that wasn't possible because the order had already shipped, even though the tracking information clearly showed otherwise. After asking to speak with the owner, I spoke with him briefly. Our conversation focused solely on how I wanted my refund issued. There was no discussion of the conflicting shipping information or the concerns that led me to cancel the order. Since I had paid by credit card, I requested that it be credited back to my card, but I was told a cash refund would be easier. When I picked up my refund, I was handed a large amount of cash with no receipt or documentation. After counting it at home, I discovered I had been shorted by more than $200. I immediately contacted the owner and returned to collect the remaining balance. Again, I was handed cash with no paperwork. Since the beginning of this issue, I have requested three separate times to speak with the owner to provide feedback about my experience. Each time I was told he was unavailable, in a meeting, or out of the office. Despite those requests, I have never received a return call. The true measure of a business isn't how it treats customers when everything goes right--it's how it responds when something goes wrong. I chose to support JRC Gold Exchange from the week they opened because I believe in supporting local businesses. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling that a year of loyalty and more than $11,000 in business were not met with the level of accountability, communication, or customer care I expected. I will do business with Portland Gold Exchange in Sellwood going forward.
