American Legion Park is probably the iconic park of Stockton. I'm not saying it's the best park, but it is the park that most resembles "old" Stockton in that the entire city used to congregate here for the 4th of July decades ago. First, Stockton wasn't always on the wrong side of a population 350k or more. I remember when we were about half that in the early 80's. This park was the premiere location to hang out and just relax. There really isn't much for facilities here. There is basketball, a kids playground and that's about it. The grassy bank protecting the 'hood from flooding is kinda cool because it provides an interesting pathway around the park and the Smith Canal. There are some concrete tables and benches if you want to throw a quick BBQ or just share some beers during COVID. You can fly a drone and get some great pics of Stockton from about 500 feet. You can throw a frisbee and lose in said Canal. You can talk a dog for a nice walk around and double back or shoot all the way to Pershing and make a loop. In short, this isn't the largest, most beautiful, or even the best facilites, but the location matters and this place used to the heart of Stockton when times were a lot better (kid of the 80's, greatest decade ever)! read more

Going to this park was nostalgic. I used to go to this park all the time and fish a long time ago. It was surprisingly quiet, I don't know why but I thought it would be more active. I visited this park on mother's day. They do have lots of green grass area, a lake or the pond ...I don't know if that's the body of water from the delta. Anyway, it's a cool spot to take the family to, if you don't want to go to the sometimes overcrowded Victory Park down the street. read more

My daughter and I love this park! We come here at least 4 times a week lol. I love how close it is to us and it is a very low-key park. The playground is fairly new so in my opinion it's very clean and never no mess or trash left in or around the playground. There is also a pond of water across the park where people fish or just walk around it. Very relaxing & quiet area. We were looking for a playground to kill some time and came across this one on Yelp. We were so confused when we got there via Google Maps because the whole thing was a big hill and we couldn't find the playground. So if you're going there for the playground you have to go there through the Elm Street side of the park/lake and then turn onto San Jose St then Walnut St, where you'll come to a dead end and you can park right in front of the playground. The playground seemed very new and there were separate sets for the big kids and little kids, with a big tire swing in the middle. The big hills were nice and there were a lot of people walking their dogs. I like that the park is tucked away off the street so you really have to know it's there or live nearby there. read more

Been coming here since I was a child. They've always kept us Park up nice. Lot of good memories here when they used to do the fireworks as well. Of course there's been homeless now tearing up the waters with trash. Which is so sad. We used to be able to eat the fish out of here. People are just mean and don't care. But it's still a beautiful Park and I highly recommend coming out here friends family and fun. Nice barbecues good place for children to play at the north side of the park. And they keep it clean. Pros: The new playground is beautiful and super fun for my son. We were so bummed when the last one burned down in July 2017, but this new one just went up in the past month and my two year old loves it! He especially loves playing on the huge xylophone. Lots of fun for the little one. Cons: I don't feel comfortable coming out here alone with my son because of some of the people hanging out in the park. I'll only take my son to the park if there's another adult with us. On any given day there are groups of 10+ people at the nearby tables smoking or just sitting around. read more

So beautiful here. As soon as we ( Jade Marie, my pit and I) pulled up , we were juiced. Look at all of this greenery. Jade stayed on leash and we just ran damn near everywhere. The body of water in the middle of the park must have fish in it. A couple of guys were fishing and they were hella cool. Theyre there everyday ( well that's what they said) and knew I wasn't from around here because they haven't seen me before. Lol. I chatted for a bit then back to seeing what this place offers. It offered alot for us. Even though its not an enclosed dog park, it's still a great place for a dog . Some dogs were off leash and I made sure we werent too close to them. You know people have an issue with pits. They think that they want to have them and their dog for dinner. Well news flash, she eats Taste of the Wild. So much space is avail for you to be kind of in your own area, without being in others space. We will be coming back at least 3 times a week. One thing I would of liked to see were some water fountains for the dogs. Perhaps they are there and I just didn't see them. But I will bring water and a bowl for my boo next time. read more

American Legion Park on Baker Pl in Stockton, California. I used to live down the street from here about four years ago. I would bring my children here to come and play when they were all younger. I have a lot of great memories at this park. We would get some crackers and feed the ducks in the little pond they have here. Have picnics and play in the playground. Now time is moving so fast and my youngest feels like she's to old to play at this park. Because the playground is built for the younger kids and my baby girl is a big girl now at age 9 :) Making beautiful memories everywhere we go is how we roll. This park is quiet and a nice place to walk your dog. It is an urban park surrounded by a beautiful gentrified neighborhood. Lovely tree lined streets, well cared for homes from the 1920's-1940's. The Park is safe, full of trees a lake and you can wander off to the side streets and have no worries. Truly a bubble of beauty in the City of Stockton. A nice mile and a half walk to the University of the Pacific. read more

This is a well shaded park with play areas for kids, grass areas to sit and enjoy some fun family time. I haven't been here for years but it seems less crowed then most parks in the area so if you're looking for a safe shady park to enjoy a picnic or just hang out I would recommend trying it out. Also bring the fido because it is dog friendly with plenty of poop bag stations. I wonder how many people when the City held the 4th of July fireworks celebration at the park? read more

I would give a 5 star, but due to the children's area and multiple homeless encampment, the safety factor means I can't give a 5. The homeless here are relatively quiet and stay to themselves. The park itself is large and nice for dogs and children if you are attending them. I wouldn't let a young child play here alone. The end of the canal can be walked up to but their is a large amount of oil and debris covering/on top of the water towards the end. Many benches and tables to have lunch and sit down. Great place to bird watch as well. Parking is found on residential streets or side streets along the circle of the park. Overall a great gem for those who want a more secluded park away from the main streets in Stockton. Just beware of the homeless tents hiding alone the trees near the canal. I don't know if I would fish as the oil and thickness of the water towards the end of the canal is quite built up. read more

Many years of memories here. As a child we would come here often, because a cousin lived across the street. In the 70's this was the place to be for the 4th of July. Many laughs and fun times here. I'm glad that it's just a few blocks away, and I can utilize it regularly, is an awesome feeling. The Park has a canal going through it but you can totally walk from one side to the other. Sometimes you may see people out fishing or flying kites or just hanging out having a wonderful time. It's a true hidden neighborhood gem. read more

This park is close by me and I would rate as a great place to walk my 3 dogs but due to the trash along the water, the homeless, and the off leash dogs, I'm always very cautious when walking there. I still go several times a week but try to stay away from the water's edge: from the soiled diapers, clothing, food remains - all the things my dogs want to investigate! Also, the restrooms have been locked due to vandals. Despite that, it is still a pretty and convenient park to walk my dogs. read more
