Maclean is a very nice guy and easy to work with, however the job done left a lot to be desired. The job was to rip up the carpet on my upstairs landing and stairs. He and another gentleman completed the job in about 2 days. Let's start with the landing, the floor was uneven but there was no floor prep done prior to placing the flooring to ensure the panels would be flush. As such, we have flooring the wiggles/moves up and down when we walk on it. The stairs were worse, the treads and risers were poorly placed, unevenly spaced and the caulk poorly done. We made our concerns known and he eventually came back to redo the stairs, but he was hard to get in contact with and it took about 4 months before we got them redone. We had to purchase new treads and risers which he reimbursed us for, but even the redo was only marginally better than the initial job. I'm giving two stars because he acknowledged the job wasn't up to standard and reimbursed us for the extra flooring we had to buy.

This family-owned business works with you on overall design and materials. Then, they select one of their teams to estimate the plumbing and contracting work as separate estimates. You also order your fixtures and glass directly from recommended vendors. While this sounds complicated, Zelmar kept all the moving parts on schedule. Easy peasy. They gave me solid advice on what could and could not be done. This led me to make smarter design decisions. They recommended a layout which was much better than I originally envisioned. Their plumbing and contracting partners were outstanding. Easy to work with, strong execution, respectful while in my home and cleaned up after themselves. In particular, the attention to detail by Coates Contracting made me a fan. Little things like the placement of tiles so the grain continues, the level surfaces, etc. Home improvement projects can be so stressful, but this one was not. We ended up firing him for this and hired Chris to repair the damage and make things right. He went above and beyond our expectations to make us feel comfortable and to correct the many mistakes such as crooked cabinetry, appliances that weren't installed correctly, mismatched ceiling and wall textures, etc etc. It was great having a contractor we could trust and it gave us peace of mind that things were going to be how we always wanted them. Chris is also comfortable doing small stuff such as helping me hang fake brick panels, repairing the things on our inspection list, and building a built in dog bowl holder. He really does it all which provides one stop service that is top notch quality.
