In the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, I knew it was better than a good idea to donate blood. I made the appointment online and went in two days later. Appointments before 8AM? Yep! That meant I got in and out fairly quickly. The folks here are professional and friendly, something I appreciate when needles are involved. Wow! I've had lots of experiences donating blood (one pint short of two gallons at this point), and this is one of the best I've had. Parking was available right up front. I signed into the building and was checked in within 5 minutes. I did have an appointment and did the Rapidpass to make my process faster, but there was no one there, so it was even easier. Kris, my phlebotomist, was super friendly and considerate, and I got to look out the window at the great view on the river, which included the Stone Arch Bridge and the Guthrie. Apparently there are bald eagles roaming the river right now, so that's cool. Afterwards, they offer a bevy of snacks and juices to help get your energy back up before taking on the world after doing something to save it. read more

The American Red Cross leads disaster relief efforts across the country and world. This morning I was fortunate to be invited to the Heroes Breakfast put on by the Twin Cities American Red Cross. At this breakfast they provided awards to spotlight some of our local heroes. The stories of selfless acts to help those in need (from the Bridge collapse, to saving lives during a disaster at the MN State Fair, to a young lady donating her wish from Make A Wish Foundation to another family in need, to everyday heroes) were inspiring and reminded me about the loving community we live in! This place just milks your time and money. I went here for a recertification and they gave us 15 minute breaks every 2 hours with a 45 minute lunch break. And the instructors tell funny stories and makes you play name games to help buy some more time. And then, one of the classmates showed up 25 mins late, and we reviewed everything we had already talked about just so she could be caught up. Ridiculous. Would not recommend. read more

They have many volunteer opportunities for people of all ages to partake in. A few years ago, I did data entry and made recruiting calls for people to donate blood. I donated blood for them many times; I am thankful I am saving lives. One year, I helped out at their booth at the MN State Fair. read more
