I can't even eat a slice of cherry pie in under thirty seconds! I decided to look up bone marrow donation somewhat on a whim, after reading 'The Emperor of All Maladies' which is a fantastic biography of cancer in which the principal patient has Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The portrait of this particular cancer that the doctor/author portrays is downright chilling. After filling out information online, a cheek swabbing kit was promptly sent, along with some other information and brochures. I swabbed and sent, it's as easy as 1-2-3-4 (there are four cheek swabs.) I've received all three of my 'welcome e-mails' that detail different aspects of the process and provide some warmth and optimism, without being overbearing. I may be called in six days, six months, six years, or perhaps never, but am I ever glad that I am there in case anyone needs me. If you haven't checked out the Registry's website, please do! A few years back when I was at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, I participated in a donor drive which cost me nothing, provided shade from the blazing sun, treated my to cookies and juice, and pained me only for a second while they took a small blood sample. This past year, I was notified that I might be a potential match for someone in need of bone marrow. What took only 30 minutes out of my day could be the first step toward helping another human being live out the rest of his or her life. Disease strikes when you least expect it, even if you live healthily. At the age of 45, with three children and a house that was still being paid for, never having smoked a cigarette in his life, exercising regularly and leading a completely "dry" life, my dad was told he had six months to live. That is not nearly enough time to rally all your friends together to find a marrow match, yet thousands of people are given the same death sentence by their physicians regularly. Lots of very generous people plan to do their part once they are dead by donating their organs. I genuinely look forward to this doctors office, and while my regular doctor has become more popular recently, I had the pleasure of seeing the other doctor on staff and also got a very good first impression. As with any medical care, the key is to advocate for yourself and make yourself clear with your experience, so that and you'll be good. I've had my blood drawn several times, and other tests- and they are decently quick in getting back to you, quicker than I've experience in other offices. I have been wanting to do this for a long time and jumped at the opportunity before me. After filling out a health screening sheet and personal information, 4 cotton swabs were placed inside my (mouth) cheeks and swiped-2 on each side. That was all there was to it-very quick and painless. My mother once was very ill with cancer and looked into getting a bone marrow transplant to increase her healthy white blood cells since cancer treatment had decimated her immune system. At that time, it was unheard of to do a bone marrow transplant for the kind of cancer she had but we went to UCLA and tried. Now it seems that cord blood, stem cells and bone marrow have life-giving and healing properties that we continue to discover every day. The "Be The Match" Registry is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program and gives hope to patients with life-threatening diseases. Bone marrow transplants help people with leukemia, lymphoma and many other diseases. First, patients undergo chemotherapy and sometimes radiation to destroy their diseased marrow. A donor's healthy blood-forming cells are then given directly into the patient's bloodstream, where they can begin to function and multiply. For a patient's body to accept these healthy cells, the patient needs a donor who is a close match. Seventy percent of patients do not have a donor in their family and depend on the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated bone marrow donor or umbilical cord blood. Certain ethnic groups are underrepresented in the marrow donor pool so the needs are never-ending for more donor sign-ups. My care has always been impeccable and the treatment my Intended Parents had was so courteous and respectful. When it comes to a birthing center, Regina can't be beat! They also offer a volunteer doula program and have midwives if you prefer. They are super accomodating. I get routine iron infusions here also and they are so good w/me. (I don't do IV's or needles well, so they are very tolerant of me) I'm very comfortable and reassured w/them. My knee surgery was done here years ago and went really well. No complaints there.

They did a great job talking to him, explaining what was going to happen at each step of the way. The room was clean and comfortable. They were very thorough with their care and attention. They were able to ease his anxiety and help him through out his time there. The phlebotomist even had us all laughing. All in all I am so thankful for the care they provided to our son and us.
