Just did the sunset harbor tour over the weekend. I booked it kind of last minute, so didn't know what to expect, but here's what we experienced. The boat is beautiful and super clean and feels like a transport in time or like going on a boat ride in the 1920's. There are plenty of places to chose from to sit, whether you're on a date or in a group. As the boat took off, the crew invited anyone who wanted to help raise the sails to help & learn. It was fun to watch this and experience it up close. The Captain narrated the first part of the trip pointing out a bunch of history and current military ships & projects. You're able to get up and walk around the boat, so we checked things out from all sides, plus under the main deck there is a kind of snack shop with a bar. We got lemonade and it was refreshing & reasonably priced. At the turnaround, there was a live musician who went around the boat playing guitar & singing. This liven up the ride & again felt old fashioned in a good way. Sunset was beautiful & it was peaceful to be on the boat. A very pleasant experience. Now that said, if you want a party boat or high energy experience, this is not for you. The ship is slow. It was a very quiet ride and the 2 hours did feel long (but I'm an adventurous person). My husband and I both agreed that it was nice to almost force ourselves to slow down and just be :) The crew was great, it's easy to book, easy to find at the Marina & a fun activity for the right crowd!

"A 3 hour tour, a 3 hour tour!" But seriously, it's the perfect pass-time on the Elizabeth River with scenic views of Norfolk and Portsmouth amid chill tunes, attentive staff and good food/drink. It's great for locals and visitors alike; I go as part of an annually recurring corporate team building event but it's equally suited for singles, couples, families, friends and anyone that wants to earn sea legs for 2-3 hours. Smaller group attendees should check out Groupon or the Rover website for specials/deals. From the event standpoint, they're fairly easy to deal with when planning and executing things. FYI, there are no refunds. We saw inclement weather a few years in a row: 1 we couldn't sail so we got 80 individual passes for our attendees to return a better weather day (on their own, sans food/bevs); other year it sprinkled so we basically hosted a still/floating social where we boarded to eat/drink/chat/be merry. The owners are community-minded people with a passion to deliver a sound experience for all who board; it shows in who they employ as a captain. He's a nice guy with a priority on safety, though he did let my boys take a turn at driving the boat - cool, right. Speaking of safety, they have railing and life jackets BUT it's a boat, so if you have children or "inebriated friends" in tote, for heaven's sakes keep vigilant watch over them.

We had an excellent experience on the Rover this past weekend! We attended the Moonlight Party Cruise -- for $15 each, we were able to climb on board and enjoy the beautiful full moon and scenic views as we sailed around the bay. They had a bar available that served decent wine, the staff was super friendly and attentive throughout, and they had a DJ on board to provide some upbeat party music. The entire experience was a ton a fun and I'd definitely repeat it in the future!

My wife and I enjoyed a very fun and informative sailing cruise aboard the American Rover on April 11, 2022. The captain and crew were welcoming and helpful. The ship was beautiful and handled well under both sail and power. I would highly recommend this harbor tour for anyone but especially for ship lovers and students of naval history. The families aboard seemed to have a very good time.

Very relaxing cruise aboard the American Rover. Some good music but the singer was better at some genres. He kept the group entertained. A dj would be fine also. It was a bit cloudy but we had beautiful views. The navigator provided a history lesson and information on the Elizabeth River area. I highly recommend this cruise. Take your spouse or partner for a romantic evening. Drinks and bar is available onboard.

We came here for a company event. Luckily, we had sunny, warm weather that day, although if you weren't in the shade, the heat was brutal. About 50 of us were in our group, and because we didn't reserve the entire ship, we shared it with other paying guests as well. The ship is a pretty nice size, and can accommodate up to 129 guests. Our 2-hour cruise departed at Waterside and we sailed through the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. The captain of the ship did a great job narrating the cruise and going over the history of different landmarks as we passed by. The staff of the American Rover was also very welcoming and frequently walked throughout the ship to make sure everyone was okay, and we were even lucky to have a musician on board with his guitar, performing some well-known songs. As far as food and drink, fortunately our company event had Gourmet Gang to cater and we were provided drink tickets to redeem for anything in the bar. The ship does offer snacks and drinks for purchase, and you are welcome to bring your own food to the ship (but no alcohol).

Last night I was treated to the evening sunset cruise aboard the Rover. AND it was a TREAT! Right out of the gate, we got to see a pod of dolphins. I was super stoked on this- I work in Dominion Tower and have been bummed that I haven't seen any in the river this year. Needless to say, the trip started on a high point... and there it remained. Another surprise treat- being able to see my home from the cruise!!! Although the sky was a bit cloudy, the sunset views were still stunning. The Captain was very informative in pointing out the diverse sights and shared some cool historical facts. The entertainment was light and fun- a guy with a guitar singing familiar tunes. Another thing to take note of is the raising of the sails. It's pretty impressive and the crew did it with ease- even offering folks the opportunity to join in the pulling of ropes. It was nice that the ship size and crowd size offered the opportunity to be socially distanced and that safety measures were in place. If you get the chance to take a trip aboard, I suggest you do- it was awesome!

We also wanted formal training and certifications and we found this place online. We also thought seeing Virginia and the east coast a bit would have been a great time for my wife Brittany's birthday. So we flew to Virginia's SailTime courses instead of one of the the ones in our own state. We flew from California and I spoke with Connie and she was kind enough to let us stay on a 41 ft yacht (Adiona, a 41 ft Jenneua) for our stay in Virginia which saved us about half a grand on hotels. When we landed a lady named Brooke made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. When we got on board to unpack there was even a note waiting for us that said happy birthday. Brooke was a sweetheart for sure and we felt like family by the time we had set our bags down. She made sure of it. We met our captain the next morning. A man named Jim Lant who took us through our 101, 103 and 104 courses over the next 6 days. We had a GREAT time and I honestly didn't want to leave when we finished up our last tests. Those six days we sailed every day and every place we sailed too seemed to have friendly people there who all knew each other and our captain Jim. The first ocean sail my wife and I ever did together was from Norfolk to cape Charles and that's pretty cool. Well miss the people and sailing for sure! Everyone who loves sailing should come here and meet Connie, Jim and Brooke. You won't regret it and we won't ever forget it. Jim is the BEST captain.

Captain Jim was absolutely amazing. He was so patient and did such a fantastic job of teaching us about sailing and he allowed all of us to take part in one way or another. It's generally really hard to find activities that all 6 of us enjoy due to the age range but this turned out to be an absolutely perfect day. I would highly recommend Sailtime if you are thinking of trying this adventure! Working with them on scheduling was so easy and smooth as well. Be warned, you will want a sail boat afterward.....

We read the reviews and assumed since they were all so good and their website looked good they were a legit company. We called and talked to a nice lady on the phone a week prior to us coming to visit for a week long vacation with 6 of our grandkids. Let her know we had a pontoon and would like to rent a nice boat to spend 2-3 days on the lake tubing, skiing, and riding around while we were here. I asked about the two nicer boats on the website and she said they had some really clean boats and she could get us 8 in one no problem. So reserved the premium one over the phone. When we arrived the next week they called the day before and requested to be paid the of the amount in cash. I thought this was strange for a company, but agreed and went to back to get cash for the next morning. (First red flag) When they arrived with the boat it was a 22 year old tri-toon, very weathered, and let's just say, well used. (Second red flag) Seats ripped, awning held together with bungee cords and straps, rear ladder was bungee strapped up, horn was broken, so we have a whistle, interior lights broken lenses, radio didn't work, the anchor was an 8 pound mushroom anchor you would use for a johnboat, would certainly not hold a 24' pontoon. The life vest they provided were just as old as the boat. We only had 4 we could use old of the 10 they sent. There's no tow bar to pull from, so the drivers says yeah you will have to tie onto one of the toons, really??? I expressed my frustration with the delivery driver, which went no where, I called the office and talked to a lady who said she had only been answering phones for a few months and had never actually seen the boats. (Third red flag). I asked at this point was this a company or was this just individuals renting out their boats and cabins? She answered just individuals, they don't have an actual office. She advised she would get with the owner of the boat to see if they can do anything but they didn't have any other boats available. By now I'm frustrated but I have 6 grandkids ages 13-8 looking at me excited to go boating and waiting to get on the boat. They could care less what it looks like or if it's going to leave us stranded, they just want to go. lol I go ahead and take the boat and make the best of what we have throughout the day. When they pick up the boat I was expecting a little humility and at least an half ass excuse, but all I get was "sorry this wasn't what you expected, thank for re ring with us though". We check on other rentals in the area the next morning and found that they actually have newer boats and are quite a bit less expensive. I also went back and reviewed their website to see if I missed anything and over reacted. What I found was a couple of the reviews were from the delivery guys family, the delivery driver is actually in the pictures. So I wonder if the 23 reviews are actually real at this point. Moral of the story, don't stop doing research when you find a good website or good reviews. Keep checking around, we paid 730 dollars for a 22 year old worn out boat and motor for 8 hours and could have gotten a 2 year old boat with a bigger motor, for 520 dollars at 2 other rental places right down the road. If you're renting your own equipment that's great, just be upfront about it !

These are top 5 reasons why I love coming here: 1. Parking It only costs $3 for the whole day (until midnight, I believe). No need to keep plugging the meter. There's a parking machine located right by the entrance of the walkway to the beach. Can't remember if you need to place it on the dash, but why not? Just in case... 2. Public washrooms and showers There are washrooms with changing rooms, showers underneath the roof (on the other side of the washrooms) outside, equipped with the short shower heads to rinse your feet. ESSENTIAL with young kids. 3. Public beach access with tide pool The beach is the end of Chick's beach, right under Lesner Bridge. The bridge itself provides great shade on a portion of the beach, although a lot of people like to fish there too, so we usually end up moving a little further down. Also, depending on the time of day you go, there is a tidepool and the water is not as rough so it's relatively safe for the kiddos. Of course, still watch your kids. 4. Traffic Meaning, it's not crowded there at all! Only a handful of people the last couple of times we've been there. 5. American Brew The best part is coffee and bites is right next door! It's a short walk from the parking lot, but if you forget to pack a lunch, American Brew is located right at the corner of the street (you'll most likely see it before you turn in to the parking lot). They have great coffees, bowls and other bites. Summer is here so enjoy the sunshine and soak up every bit of that Vitamin Sea! Stay safe, Friends!
