Man what can I say this yard is awesome. Not once have I ever had a bad interaction with any of the staff they all seem like they love the job they do and they constantly are smiling and being informative with the customers. I think he was the foreman he was referred to as popeye MAN HE WAS GREAT. Super nice friendly and very communicative. We will definitely come back to scrap our metal with popeye and his crew. DO NOT COME HERE! Super shady place. I have been here on multiple occasions. I started to get a fishy feeling when I would bring relatively large amounts of house wire in and receive little cash back for what I had brought in. Two weeks prior to one visit i had brought in less wire but got more cash. The next time I went in I asked to see the weight on the computer and the employee got an attitude. I later called and told the person at the front desk that they people on the floor were lying about weights. She proceeded to tell me that I must have weighed it incorrectly before bringing it in. These people and this scrapyard are thieves. You're better off making a further drive to Indiana and stopping at Merrillville Metal Recycling. Honest people with honest prices. read more

I have to say this scrap yard is one of the nices I have been to. When you pull in they ask you "what you got" and quickly get you out with money in hand. I have been here few times and it's always nice to have a good quality scrap yard not too far from home. Now I save all my cans and on garbage day find myself looking for heaps of metal junk while driving though the neighborhood. I will not however buy a POS truck and quit my day job to become a scrapper......... I'm saving that for retirement. Nice people and very laid back read more

New at this. Today, I scrap an old black aluminum grill that used charcoal, a brass colored aluminum etarege, a thin aluminum freestanding four shelf unit, closet rod poles, and an old aluminum fan. To be honest, one should stay clear of this place. We were quoted over the phone for over 2 dollars a pound for various silver plated alloys and when we arrived it was much different. We overheard what seemed to be the manager/owner on the floor say to his employees to "add them to the brass pile". So basically we ended up getting only slightly over a dollar a pound. In other words he pulled a fast one on the floor. It is possible whoever quoted us was not aware of this person's practice or various employees for that matter. When he was confronted about why he charged us on the brass price, his face dropped like a deer in head lights and became very defensive, including snapping the receipt from the person I was with. I guess it is easy to be tough with a woman, he didn't even look me in the eyes or start with me and that was probably the only smart decision he made that day. Also he became belligerent and resorted to many insults towards the woman I was with (Very professional if you ask me!), and claimed he had "millions". Well it makes you wonder why a so called millionaire needs to rip people off for less than a 100 dollars. Finally he advised the woman I was with in a cocky manner to contact the better business bureau and sure enough they did! Needless to say, if you have no choice and have to go to this place, make sure you pay attention to when they are weighing the metals and understand the receipt before you get paid for your scrap metal. i wanted to give it zero stars, but Yelp wouldn't let me. Brought in a truck full of metal (brass, copper, aluminum) and two big bags of crushed aluminum cans. They lumped the brass and copper together, giving me 85 cents a pound (half of what I was supposed to get) and 20 cents a pound on the aluminum cans (less than half of the market price today They not only screwed me on the price, but on the weight too. I weighed everything in my garage on a old doctor's scale before I loaded it up and went here. These people are thieving lowlifes. Go anywhere but here. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

I have been to this scrapyard on many occasions (10 times this year alone) and things went rather smooth. However it seems sometime like the workers are doing me a favor by the way they greet and handle drop offs. Specifically, I was there a week ago with approx. 800lbs of aluminium cans (in bags) and decided to drop off in a box truck inside the garaged area since no other customers were there. Damien behind the counter looked at my load and said "You know aluminum cans just dropped to .24 cents a lb". Since I recycle very often I kinda smiled and said are you sure. Then I made a call to my other recycling place and they said they were at .50 cents lb. So I told American I was at .50 cents elsewhere and they said they could match .50 cents, then after that all I heard was swearing and how upset he was about helping to unload the cans, even though other workers helped as he watched. So after we unloaded 20% and listening to his complaining I decided to close my door and cash out. Well then after looking at the receipt it appeared that he gave me .50 cents lb on my first measure then .40 cents lb on the next few, so I was shorted about $30. I walked back up to him and said the receipt is incorreect and all I got was attitude as he said "Go to the window" with no apology or eye contact, I did not only feel disrespected in that case but as a return customer on many occasions. I scrap alot of copper and aluminum (My 2012 reciepts show thus far (1800 lbs of # 1 Copper and over 5000lbs of cans this year so far). American Scrap not only lost the other 80% of that truckload but will lose the rest of my business in the future. As I dropped off the other 80% at a competitior down the way I was greeted with hello and and a polite thank you as I left, the way a cusgomer should be handled on every occasion. read more
