The whole first floor and courtyard are set up with beer, wine and a few hard liquor choices. There are tastings in each of the three rooms and the courtyard. Some of the tastings are: bruschetta with assorted toppings, Bavarian pretzels with a cheese sauce, a smoked turkey wrap, 4 different wood fired pizzas,macaroni and cheese, several cheese platters, a really beautiful dessert table with mini fruit tarts and chocolate eclairs, Mexican street corn, mini cupcakes, jerk chicken bites, empanadas. Of course the most important part of the evening was hearing an inspirational story from a 17 year survivor and her battle.

We were seated by a window and had very good service. I ordered the French Onion Soup and a BLT sandwich. The soup had a delicious cheese topping, but way too much bread. The BLT was well prepared but the fries weren't crispy, which was disappointing. Our server was very attentive and the ambiance was wonderful. The star of the show here is the view of the water.

The Buffalo Yacht Club is at the foot of Porter Avenue, just before you'd cross the Peace Bridge into Canada. We had a family dinner and lunch the next day while overlooking the harbor and waterway that divides Canada from the US. Yes, that bank of land? That's Canada right there. I giggle because growing up in Buffalo, many of us never thought of Canada as a foreign country; we thought of it as "the next town over." In these times, the club is a little short-staffed; that just gave us more time to mix and mingle and enjoy the view. One of the oldest yacht clubs in the country, founded when Lincoln was President, pretty cool.

Drinks at the bar were well presented and delicious. Meals and appetizers were being tossed around like beanbags on a Tuesday night cornhole league at the local VFW. I wish I had room for dessert, but my gastro intestinal volume is not what it used to be. I am always pleased at The Buffalo Club.

Every room had carving stations and buffet lines, some rooms had shrimp cocktail and hors d'oeuvres. Multiple rooms had a bar available cocktail waitresses and waiters with different hors d'oeuvres and seating or pub style tables for people to eat at. After a day of mourning the Buffalo Club sure did know how to cheer everyone up and celebrate a life that will be sadly missed!

Deciding to attend the kid's fishing derby wound up being quite the catch (wink). The pond was…read morestocked with walleye, and normally contains bass, blue gills, koi fish, etc. The rules were that the biggest fish caught by a kid wins the tournament. With the biggest fish caught (twice) being an 18" large mouth bass, needless to say those kids did not flounder (wink). If a fun, free day of fishing with your kids or grandkids isn't enticing enough, the Club also cooked up hot dogs, french fries and hamburgers, gave every kid a very generous door prize and awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers trophies. Not too bad for free, and these conditions will bring me back next year, hook, line and sinker (wink). No good fishing expedition could be that good without embellished fishing stories to boot, and my son got his first lesson here. Not only did he catch his first fish solo here years ago, but now he can claim the fame of the only kid to catch a 14.5 ft. Hammerhead Shark. Well, no, but when he really wanted to win the tournament, I told the judges he caught that fish and then winked at him with a smile. The judges had a good laugh, but later my son said to me, "Dad, do you think they believed you about me catching a shark". They don't have to, kid, every fisherman tells tall tales. Like the fish they pretend to catch, fisherman too often fall for the bait (wink).

Named after the 1908 Socialist Party candidate and labor activist, Eugene V Debs this is a new…read moresocial club near the Central Terminal. Membership to the club can be obtained by contacting the owner. However this space is available for private rentals and will soon have public hours. Consisting of a front room with large wooden bar, there is a single washroom just off the back. A short hall takes you to the bar dining room that further leads to the kitchen. As with most old buildings of this nature the kitchen is shared with the living space above which is where the owner resides. Don't be surprised when the loveable Luca (husky) comes downstairs for a visit. This gentle giant just wants some pats.

Friends Meeting Houses tend to be sparsely adorned. This one is no exception. A quiet house just…read morepast the towns main crossing point. Parking lot is small but that you can park on the street in the area. This is the oldest active Quaker congregation in the area. It started when a Quaker from VT moved to the area. He told his family about the rich land in the area, and the quite lifestyle, so they came along too. The congregation grew over time. They bought some more land, built the Meeting House and started a cemetery. Over the years they remained in the area and grew in size. I was here recently for a memorial service. The place was filled, and silent, in the Quaker tradition. This meeting house has historical value and is considered important in the area.

We had a very upsetting experience with the Friends Cemetery associated with this meeting house. I…read morewas in charge of my nephew's funeral & services when he passed in December of 2018. The plot was paid for in full before the burial. My nephew was buried alongside his father on the Freeman Road side. Howie Holmes assured me that everything would be done with care and reverence. When I checked on my nephew's burial plot in May and again in July and August, I found nothing, but a 3 ft high mound of dirt covering over his grave. In the 6 months since my nephew's death, absolutely nothing was done to make the gravesite presentable. It took over a dozen phone calls to Howie Holmes and an additional 3 months, the end of September, until the mound of dirt over my nephew's grave was smoothed over. Nine months time is totally unacceptable to make a gravesite presentable to the family. My nephew's mother had to endure this neglect daily as she lives close by to the cemetery. Howie Holmes did NOT live up to his promise to treat my nephew's remains with the care and respect that he deserved.

Newly renovated and brought back to it's finer glory this old building is getting used. The new…read moreowners removed the drop ceiling revealing beautiful hanging lamps, they've cleaned it up and made it beautiful. Concerts on the stage, events like plays and benefits for the community are happening. Easy on street parking. There are stairs to get in though. It's a large room with large windows, exposed brick and wooden floors. I find it's a comfortable vibe. Look for activities on social media and come check it out.
