We did have an issue with a VIP/chair upgrade we paid for; staff told us it didn't exist, which wasn't great. Thankfully, the artist reached out afterward to make things right, which we really appreciated. They stayed open late even though the schedule ran long, making sure all of us had a chance to grab merch and a selfie. That extra effort was really cool of them and made the night even better. It was a great night with a great crowd.

They'll glare at you like you just committed a crime. * Try to make their job easier by explaining what's in your pockets before a pat-down? That's apparently "uncooperative." * Step aside to send a quick text? Nope, you're "in the way." * Uber two minutes out in subzero temps? Out you go, even if you're not blocking a thing. This place operates on a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" policy, where even existing seems to be an offense. I'm a respectful guy, but they push my buttons in a way that makes me question my sanity. Respect is earned, and let's just say they're running a serious deficit. The cherry on top? I got elbowed in the nose, ended up with a bloody one, and as I tried to clean up in the bathroom, I was watched like I was about to commit a felony. No concern, no assistance--just judgment. It then apparently became Hotel Alise before becoming part of the Staypineapple Group. This was my first stay at a Staypineapple property; I must say their vibe is charming with a good dose of humour. The hotel building itself has a significant history. Originally designed by the famed architecture firm Burnham and Root as well as by Charles Atwood in the late 1800's as an office building, it was one of the first to feature the large bay-like "Chicago window". Its transformation into a hotel has thankfully retained much of the original features and fixtures, even the interior windows of individual offices still exist but are opaqued. Room doors still have the "Reliance" name on the lock and also the original mail slot. The first floor still features the front desk and the all-day restaurant Atwood, which I did not try this visit. Staypineapple has added a welcome drink, bikes to borrow, a water bar, afternoon pineapple-shaped cookies and coffee, plus snacks and beverages for purchase. My room was the starter-level Atwood Queen. It was petite but was not lacking in any features. There are pineapple motifs throughout: the free refillable water bottle, mugs, pillow, extra toilet paper, robes, outlet/USB port dock, Do Not Disturb sign, stuffed dog (you can buy). There are 2 covered quilts that also serve as topsheets. The window was enormous, even though not a Chicago one. I was on the top floor and had a tiny glimpse of the river, along with the L, the Chicago Theatre and the historic Marshall Fields building (now Macy's). I appreciated the empty mini-fridge. Being in the downtown loop, many sites and restaurants are easily within walking distance, as well as CTA stops. I personally went to Millennium Park, the Chicago Architecture Center, and Wildberry, the very popular breakfast/lunch spot. Staypineapple has added some fun to this iconic hotel, which will remain my first choice for lodging in the Loop.

Chicago's location is in the Loop, a nice central location. Unlike the prior hotels, this hotel is in a historic building, so instead of card keys, you have old fashioned keys for your room, and the bathroom fixtures are also old fashioned, as are the walls in the elevator lobby. Everything else, though, is quite modern. I truly appreciate that the bedside table had easily accessible sockets to plug in my electronics. I love that our room has two luggage racks. Staypineapple also provides two duvets per bed (which I understand is European style) so you can't gripe about your partner stealing the covers. And of course, you get a free metal water bottle that you can fill with water in the lobby, plus coasters to get two free drinks. We didn't spend much time in our room--when we travel, we want to see the city--but the time we did spend was very cozy. Check in and check out were quick and efficient. (Pre-checking in online helps.) If I'm ever back in Chicago, I'll stay here again.

They were prompt with responses and knowledgeable with their recommendations, and very accommodating to our (many) requests (even going as far to lend us a microphone and speakers for the ceremony). As for the night itself... I think every single wedding guest made it a point to compliment us on the band. Their song selection was spot on, keeping interest from all the generations present and the keeping the dance floor packed until the night ended. And while it probably goes without saying, they are all outstandingly talented musicians (and how awesome is it to have both a male and female lead singer?). Their music kept our dance floor packed all night (from the older aunts and uncles to our college friends to the tweens) and our guests are still talking about the band! I have to also mention that Cliff was incredibly easy to work with and super professional!! He had the band arrange a special song for my dad and I and he was a great MC!!! DON'T TOUCH THE MINI BAR SCAM!…read more So as not to bury the lede, this review is primarily based on the hotel's absurd mini bar system designed to steal money for the slightest touch of their overpriced products. Of course there were many other disappointments that make the place simply not worth the expensive price they charge. We had to stay here for a wedding. We stayed for 2 nights. On the first afternoon we got into our room (problems with that too, see below!) and examined the stuff in the minibar. We were charged hundreds of dollars because their "minibar sensors" detect the slightest touch of ANYTHING and AUTOMATICALLY CHARGE YOU, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. You can come down with proof of not having opened or consumed anything and it doesn't matter. Still charged. Front desk and hotel manager cannot and WILL NOT do anything about it, as they defer to their "minibar company" for any questions. An extra $350 was charged to my card even though I consumed nothing extra, and hasn't been addressed 2 weeks later. I've had to put in a dispute with my credit card to see if their intervention can help move this process along. This is shameful. The rooms here were nice and spacious and clean. The gym was good. But for the price they charge there are way numerous flaws and errors: Upon check-in, we were given keys to an occupied room! We had no power for a full night! I know I complained already about the minibar but LOL they charge $15 for "premium nuts" which are simply repackaged peanut M&Ms that'll cost you $2 (for 10x the quantity) at the CVS down the block. At the wedding events themselves, their banquet staff was shockingly aggressive - while we were up socializing, or dancing, or ANYTHING but hovering over our food, the staff swooped in and took our food and drinks prematurely - SEVERAL TIMES!!! I know their job is to keep things clean but they don't even ask if someone's still eating/drinking something - they just swoop and take. Once was annoying, multiple times in 10 minutes is wasteful and unacceptable!!! One small positive, tied to another front desk negative: the housekeeping staff is wonderful. We tried to arrange a tip for our assigned housekeeping person at check out and the front desk staff was unable or unwilling to help with that. Disappointing. In the end, a promising but VERY disappointing hotel that needs a shape-up in management and guest experience principles, and most of all to jettison their absurd scam mini bar system. I'll never stay here again.
