This swimming school is very unprofessional. The pool is small, overcrowded, and dirty. The instructors do not allocate lesson time fairly--some students receive much longer instruction while others get very little. When I wanted to cancel my classes, they refused to refund my money, claiming that refunds are only allowed within three days. I strongly do not recommend this school. Most importantly, they initially agreed to issue a refund but later went back on their word, saying, "This is our policy." read more

My daughter has been going to ASA since she was 4 months old. She is 4.5 now. ASA is good in terms of teaching for kids for sure. The class area can be a bit more clean but their pool is Ulta clean. We have tried both group and private. I prefer private. - the swim time is 26 min. In that if u do group (pair of 2) then u don't have much per child and the progress they make is very slow unless ur child is extraordinarily good at picking stuff up. -private teachers definitely takes time to push the child towards their ribbon milestones and gives feedback if any. Mr Adrian is our instructor and he is very good! -the class is a bit tad expensive for a 30 min. But the demand is there so. I -they have shower and change area. U r covered. Tip: plz don't soap your kids in that area. Many kids wait there feeling cold while the other kids almost take a full blown shower. Just rinse. This isn't on the business. The program and staff at American Swim Academy for the most part have been great to work with. Some of the staff are technically well-trained and I could see the thoughtfulness behind each progression. I was also appreciative of some of the staff who had great EQ as they've made my reluctant 6yo as comfortable as possible. Our 2yo's teacher, Bri Martin, is 5 stars. Unfortunately, the class my 6yo was in did experience at least 4 different teachers which reflects in her lack of progression compared to my 2yo's experience. It is because of this constant change that I felt like my 6yo had to start over building trust, which takes away from the class and lessons. Continuity, or even a heads up, that her instructor was switching would have been appreciated. I was extremely satisfied initially when we enrolled but as the child progresses, it seems the spark that made us excited about this place diminished. The quality of instruction is highly dependent on the instructor as it doesn't seem all instructors have the same level of training or expectations. And unfortunately, this establishment seems to have a high turnover of instructors and each time, due to lack of handover of knowledge from the previous instructor, at least one class is wasted for the new instructor to establish a baseline for your child's proficiency level. This can happen at least 4 times a year despite keeping the same time slot. And don't even expect anything from a make up class unless it's the same instructor. The most recent make up class we had was utterly a waste of time. It was as if we paid money to use a pool - there was no instruction whatsoever. They had my child swim laps with little coaching or correction for the whole class. And scheduling a make up is it's own ordeal - try to make all hour scheduled classes if possible and don't pick a weekend. Fortunately, there are some really good instructors and if you happen to get one you like, I'd suggest asking to see if you can align your class with their schedule to keep them your child under their care. Overall, they do a fine job in preparing your child to swim confidently. Jose ever, I wish they did more to support better handoff and learning and emphasized more on building relationships with the families. Otherwise, can be hit or miss depending on the instructor you are assigned. read more

I learned about ASA through a friend and I really didnt know what to expect but our experience overall has been great and positive and Im glad to have found ASA. Firstly signing up was a breeze, Danielle was very kind, smiley and I appreciated her support throughout the process while answering alllll of my questions! It was our first time doing something like this and between me, my brother and his wife - we wanted to rotate due to all of our schedules and it was no issue at all. When I brought my nephew, he was very very shy - he didnt even want to go into the pool. But Lucy the instructor that day was really good with him, she gave him some toys, made him smile and eventually on his own he got into the pool and let her hold him to swim :) We're very happy and will be coming back with baby #2 ! read more

The school is very slow paced. I pulled my kids out after 6 weeks when the only thing they've learned was to push off a wall and swim for 10 feet. I have feeling the slow pace of the curriculum is deliberate to keep you coming back and continuing to pay money. We bought a Groupon to give our baby (6 months) a chance to play in the water. When I first contacted the facility they were so nice! They answered all my questions and I was able to schedule 4 sessions for my child. They told us the policy on the diapers and we followed (but we see a lot of newer people only using the disposable diapers). The diaper policy is to have a disposable and also a reusable one on top. When we got to the facility for the first session we checked in and they gave us a small tour. I was impressed with the facility, changing areas, swim area, and spectator area. The water is warm! The place is clean! We had a great time with the staff, deck staff, and our swim instructor. I love the teachers and staff here. They make us feel welcome! We love the teachers! Our son has so much fun and he is learning a lot! We have since enrolled him in the remaining sessions of this quarter and rolled over his registration for summer quarter. We are very happy with this location. Both of my children have in the past been very sensitive to water on their faces and would scream if they even got splashed. We tried swim lessons (elsewhere) for our oldest in the past and it was pointless. He was not ready and was too scared of the water that he did not get far with lessons. Now at age 7 we have tried him again and he has made fantastic protest. Swim is the highlight of his week and it is so great to see him smiling on swim days. Just this week we tried our daughter (4) and she is doing well too. She is trying things in the water with the instructor that she would never try for us. She too is smiling and giggling through the lessons and I am so proud of how hard she is trying. Thank you American Swim Academy for your great staff and facility. Not a school I would recommend people to take their kids after what happen to my child today. My child has been coming here for about a year now and I never been okay that they always have different instructor. They seem to always be short of staff or hired pretty much anyone. Today my son was making up a class with an instructor and he almost drown my child. Yes you are reading right he almost drown him. My son was terrified after they took him out of the pool. Couple of the other instructor stop what they where doing to come and see my son. They where even shock of the situation. How can he leave my son under water for so long knowing his learning. I try to talk to the instructor but gave a thumb story that he doesn't believe himself. Very sad because other parents also seen the situation and couldn't believe it. This is a review for Andrea who is the office manager or should I say a magician. My child has been struggling and would be crying through all the lessons and no matter what we did he didn't want to swim. We had lessons where he didn't move from the stairs and this is after getting 3 ribbons. His usual instructor Legacy is also a very sweet and dedicated instructor but my child needed an extra push and Andrea did exactly that - perform miracles. Even though she's not an instructor she got into to the pool on multiple occasions and went above and beyond to help our son. She was firm yet gentle, she was assertive and made him feel confident as well as comfortable. Taking off one star for the first 3 quarters when my child's instructor was changed in every class and lack of consistent instructors didn't help my child feel comfortable. read more

I rarely wrote online reviews but if I can, I would give this place a "0 star" rating. It's 3/14/2020 morning and when most schools and lots of extracurricular institutions in the East Bay have been shut down due to health concerns of COVID-19, ASA is still doing business as usual. Their standard statement is that they've done additional treatments to "disinfect the water". However, it's a closed environment in this facility. Who knows the virus won't be somewhere in the parent waiting area, restroom, shower room, etc. Also I have been having very negative experience in the past couple of months regarding the way they trained my kid: - Although most coaches work diligently, ASA obviously doesn't fully trust if they can train your kids well. So it also puts two "deck managers" at the pool side to coach these "coaches in the pool" and decide your kids' progress of the week. - It's a 30 minute class. However, most of the time the deck managers will decide if your kids pass or have to re-do the same class just 15 to 20 minutes after the class starts. Considering that there are about 3 to 4 students with each coach, basically within 5 or 6 minute individual practice time the deck manager will make this critical decision. - These deck managers almost never check more than 1 item in your kids' swim passport (which means your kids pass particular swimming skills ASA defined) in each class, no matter how well your kids do or if they know certain skills already. Also the deck managers will talk to parents to mark the passport only if your kids pass the week's class. But, if your kids don't pass, the deck managers won't even bother to talk to you. - As a parent, you will observe quite some "discussions" between the coaches and deck managers, which means the coaches who actually teach your kids can't even decide if your kids pass the skills they taught moments ago, and everything is depending on the deck managers' subjective judgement. - ASA claims it offers make-up classes. However, your kids will never get an item checked in their swim passport for these make-up classes and the deck managers won't talk to you after the class to let you know what your kids learn in the class, either. All above leads to one very probable result, which is a pathetically slow progress. I can't help thinking that ASA purposely designs its training system in this way. So it can keep our kids there class after class and quarter after quarter. Mmm, it's indeed a good business... Seriously, if you want your kids to learn how to swim, hiring a private coach somewhere else may be much more effective. The hourly rate of a private coach is certainly higher, but I think in the long run it will save you money and more importantly ...... a lot of time! read more

My son have been taking lessons about 3 yrs. In this summer, A new instructor doesn't teach any skill.. she doesn't tell any mistakes and correct them. I brought my 6mo daughter here for lessons in Jan 2020. They made her so comfortable underwater- it was amazing! Even though we took a break during COVID, we're back and feel super safe with the precautions they're taking. Eva our current instructor is excellent and so good with the little aqua babies. I think my daughter's comfort in the pool is all due to their excellent instructions and focus on water safety. I wanted to do Infant Rescue Swimming with my daughter but didn't have the time or the access to the pool, and ASA has made me feel more comfortable with my daughter's pool safety (especially since the grandparents have a pool). My 3.5 year kid has been going to the ASA and I personally like and rate Andrea the best instructor of all. My kid has been going there for an year so far and no one comes close to what Andrea does as a instructor, she handles and trains every kid as per their needs and level. I was very disappointed by this place. They told me my 11yo stepson would be with another child his own age and swimming ability level. Instead he was paired with much younger children. Different children every time. It was terrible. He basically sat on the edge of the pool for 15 minutes of his 30 minute lesson while the instructor (a different one almost every time) worked with the other child. The pool was so crowded he could not even swim a lap... just 10-15 feet at a time. I feel awful that I signed him up for this. read more

We have been to this swimming school since 6th month of our son. He has had the pleasure of learning to get familiar with water, being able to apply various technologies to stay afloat, and challenging himself to swim full laps with different stroke styles. One important reason is that he has this instructor from the beginning. This instructor is the most popular, most professional, the best motivating teacher in this school. We are so lucky to have her. Also really appreciate the fact that the school is trying the best to have her there. The school is also very customer friendly in terms of supporting families that are motivated, determined and loyal. Since we resumed the swimming activity after well into the pandemic, the school has been on top to let us know any possible changes to the schedules. They even opened a session allowing my son to be able to stay with the instructor after her promotion to management role, which took her off from weekend instructing duty. We did not like American Swim for my son class. As there are not many options for learning swim so I know they do not care for review or feedback from customers. They change instructor every time. I felt process of coaching is not for kids who are slow and have fear of water. Young coach should be trained more for young kid and they should request coach to focus on kid than talk with other coaches. I wish manager go and check and make sure coach spend more time with student rather than talk with other coach. Also there is no option to do make up class. you will never find make class options other than school days which require to skip school. My son went for long time with no progress. we know some kids are not comfortable but that is why we are hiring professional to help. Our personal experience is not good at all. read more
