I have used their glasses for years. However, the last pair I received a year ago were terrible. I bought two pairs of the highest end lenses that they offered and both pairs chipped or cracked. I had them replace one of the lenses to one set of glasses and a month later that on cracked. I was not hard on my glasses. I always put them in a case when not in use. I have treated other glasses that I have bought from them much worse with no problem. I suspect that they have changed their supplier which is providing inferior product. If you come here for an eye exam be prepared to wait 35-45 minutes just to get your appointment started. The staff are very nonchalant and unapologetic about following their schedule and their client's time. I literally plan for the time I'm scheduled so had to rebook. Now I have to wait a month to be seen. It's really ridiculous. They do have a nice selection of eyeglasses but I'm not sure if I will come here for my eye exam. read more

Truly dreadful experience, wish I had just paid $20 more somewhere else to avoid the whole charade. It feels like you are being ran down an assembly line to get examined here. Doctor was perfectly nice, though the vision exam was significantly shorter than others I've had, I am honestly nervous that it will even be the right prescription... When I got to the desk to check out, the woman informed me they didn't have my one eye's prescription in stock for trial lenses. I asked if I could just pick up the free lenses for my other eye, and she said No, she wasn't allowed to give me just one. When I asked why, she said "It's the law" (lol) I didn't want to buy contacts through them, just needed an updated prescription to buy some online. This apparently was a big problem because she continued to be so rude to me and acted like I was making an absurd request! She finally hands me my prescription, and I notice that my name is spelled wrong! I asked her to correct it, as I was afraid it would invalidate the prescription, she huffed off back to the doctor without a word to me. I'm breaking a long Yelp hiatus to give one star to the hilariously-named "America's Best," which has now stolen three hours of my life that I will never get back. Here were the issues I encountered: - Due to a glitch in a new scheduling system, an appointment for an eye exam that I made for Saturday was entered into their system as a Monday appointment. Although they were able to squeeze me in, I had to wait for an additional 40 minutes in an unpleasant waiting area. -No one was particularly helpful when it came time to pick frames. When I have bought glasses in the past, I've always been helped by someone who had some thoughts about styles of frames/what's in fashion/what would look good on me. At America's "Best," this was limited to a half-hearted attempt to find something that looked like my current pair, and when that failed, by the sales associate just kind of walking away. - After failing to find frames that I liked, I decided to just pay for the eye exam and leave. I had already confirmed that the doctor was a covered provider under my insurance plan, but when I presented my insurance card the response was a very rude "Nope! Your plan covers frames, but not exams." -When my insurance company contacted them to resolve the issue, the manager LIED and said I was told it wasn't covered *before* the exam. This wasn't true. As she was no doubt aware, they don't ask for insurance information before conducting an exam. Why don't they ask for this information before the exam? I'm not sure. Maybe it's because they're a scammy bait and switch operator whose business model is to advertise deals that are too good to be true and that only a small minority of customers will actually qualify for. Gave a barely adequate prescription, only looked at 2 lenses per eye, and I had to wait longer than the actual exam took. Waiting time: The exam took about 15 minutes and had to wait 15 minutes to be seen by the technician who did most of the work and the actual optometrist The schedule of my being there: Arrive at the appointment time, wait 15 minutes to be seen by the technician (about 10 minutes), wait for the optometrist (5 minutes), with the optometrist for 5 minutes, wait to be checked out for 15 minutes. The eye exam: They didn't look at the prescription that I brought in from my previous optometrist (I just moved from out of state), even though they specifically asked for it. I spent more time with the technician, who decided to do the glaucoma (puff of air) test at least 5 times per eye. With the optometrist, I looked at 2 possible lenses per eye and that was it. The prescription that was given had the same numbers as my old ones but didn't have prisms, because apparently, I get double vision because "my eyes are dry and it will be fine with eye drops". I've had prisms in my glasses for at least 2 years because I have double vision. I didn't get a proper look through the lenses, because once she decided I just "needed drops" that was it. I made an appointment because the prescription I had wasn't strong enough. I also have a prescription for reading glasses, they didn't do anything about that. This place is the equivalent of a fast food place for eyes and not in the good sense. After looking at the list of local providers for my eye insurance (Ameritas), I made an appointment online. I went there on a Saturday morning. There was no much of a wait and I was attended promptly. There were two examination rooms one with lots of machines , which I'm pretty sure were not cleaned up after each patient. In addition, they will ofer additional analyses ($15), which if you don't have problems with your vision you shouldn't need. This was followed by a visit to another room with the optometrist. The test was simple, not like my previous examinations with other doctors. At the end he said my eyes were better than the current prescription. All was fine until I left for the counter and instead of trying on a pair of glasses requested the prescription. They weren't too trilled about it and never explained to me that they don't deal with insurance billing. Instead you have to submit a claim. They should've done this before getting me into the exam room. I ended up paying $65 for the eye exam with the promise that when submitting a claim I could get my money back. No biggy, or so I thought. I left and discovered that the prescription that they gave me was wrong and that my old pair of glasses are fine. More importantly, after submitting the claim my insurance doesn't even cover the eye exam with this people. So, if you are looking to get an eye exam I would recommend going somewhere else, especially if you own Ameritas vision through your employer. read more

The entire experience was so bad that I'm going to a new optometrist to get a new exam and Rx. Tl;dr: These people are hopeless in both the customer service and actual eyecare realms First, I arrived 15 min. early for my exam, checked in with the front desk, and then they... forgot about me? After it was 30 min. past my exam time (so I'd been there for 45 minutes already), I asked one of the employees why it was taking so wrong, and she seemed unaware that I had been there the entire time. It took another 15 minutes for them to bring me into the first room, at which point the technician was hopeless. I've worn contact lenses for the past 15 years and am used to the tests they do, but even so, need to be reminded where to look and how to sit, but she didn't give me any guidance and then would get flustered that I was doing the wrong thing when she hadn't even told me what to do. And then, the actual doctor wasn't even there in person but instead was up on a TV screen Zooming in, and didn't do anything other than ask me what lenses I'd worn before and then give me a new Rx. So, the tech was the one who administered all my exams, and I'm absolutely certain they did it wrong, because the Rx they gave me was significantly lower than it's been in the past 10 years. I tried to tell them that, but they assured me that my previous doctors had just been wrong, but I couldn't trial the lenses because they didn't have any in stock. And... it gets worse. The lenses I needed were on backlog, so I had to wait. A month later, I still hadn't heard anything from them, so called back, and they said they still hadn't arrived. Another two weeks, and they finally arrived, but I only knew because I'd called again, since they didn't notify me. And, the trial lenses were, unsurprisingly, too weak an Rx. Like, I had to take them out before driving because I couldn't see well enough into the distance with them in. I called and told them this, and thought I'd scheduled a follow-up appointment to get a new Rx. When I arrived for my follow-up, they told me they didn't do follow-up visits, and that I had to stick with the Rx I'd been given or pay out of pocket for a new exam. read more

My exam went really well the eye doctor was really nice and she helped me get set up to get contacts. Well I have 6 month twins and no one to watch them. I was told I have to come in for a class and asked if it's OK to bring my boys. And they don't usually fuss alot. I have had many excellent experiences with this chain in Buffalo NY. So much so that I was thinking about heading back to that specific store the next time I was home, but I decided to give this store a try. The choices for glasses has improved since my first initial visit. They have more designer frames now. I'm not a brand snob but you wear your glasses everyday all day, they need to look good and stand up to a lot. My glasses came in sooner than they said. I got a call and headed in to have them fitted. The woman knew what she was doing and was patient as she made all the adjustments. I went with the two eyeglass pair with eye exam and anti reflective coating for the lenses. Total with designer frames (Coach and Armani) came to $456. That's around what I used to pay for one pair. I think that's pretty fair for getting glasses every 3 years without insurance. read more

Do not go to this location for an eye exam. I have been getting regular exams for over a decade and my contacts prescription has not changed much in that period of time. After visiting this location, my new contacts prescription for my right eye was over 1 point stronger than before and my left eye remained the same. I thought this was strange that such a huge difference could happen in a year. I brought this up with both the optometrist and the receptionist and both assured me this was the correct prescription. It has been over a month now and my left eye cannot stop twitching. My vision is also blurry, which has never happened before. I paid for and went to a separate optometrist who corrected the problem and gave me a new prescription that was more similar to my other prescriptions. I guess this is what happens when you try to get a deal on eye exams. Update: Was courteously contacted by the district office and given a complete refund. Experience with district office was very good and I appreciated the offer they made to refund me even though I did request one. read more

My six year old son had an appointment at the Ithaca NY location today. He was a new patient and the website states you take Davis Vision insurance which is what his vision insurance is. Upon arrival the receptionist never even looked up from the computer and we stood there for approximately 2 minutes before she acknowledged us to rudely ask "can I help you". I told her his name and appointment time and she stated "there's a waiting room back there". I was never given any new patient paperwork or greeted whatsoever. We found our way to the waiting area and when the woman who does the eye air puff test came out to call the next patient she called my sons name but another, elderly man stood and went with her. About 5 minutes later he returned to the waiting area and she moved the paperwork into the tray for the doctor and then returned to call "Timothy" to which the elderly man stood again and replied that was him. She looked very confused and tried to understand what had happened. She then returned to the room where the pre exam tests are performed. I followed and explained that my son was the patient she had called prior and he was ready if she was. She apologized and began to make necessary changes to paperwork and then started the exam with my son. This woman still never confirmed she had the correct patient by verifying first and last name or date or birth. All was well until she began the focusing barn/balloon test. This took 20 minutes to complete and had absolutely nothing to do with my child not sitting still or looking around as she kept stating was happening. The puff of air test was just as bad, but this time she was getting the machine so close to his eyes that he was having to move away because she was touching him with the patient side of the machine. The doctor was great, quick but thorough and very kind. She explained everything she was doing so he would understand and told him he doesn't have to wear his glasses all the time, they would just help him see far away a little bit better than he does now. We then went to let him try on some frames and were told to put unwanted pairs in a yellow bin (assuming so they could be sanitized and put back where they belonged) and the ones he liked in another bin. We were told about the buy two deal and told the exam would be free if we purchased the second pair so he picked out his top pair and a second backup pair and we were told to go see someone to finish everything up. This lady we were sent to was disrespectful and downright rude to myself and my son. I asked her what the price difference was if we went with his top favorite pair and paid for his exam. She answered and seemed very annoyed for me even asking that it would be $114 and change. I then asked for the price if we got the buy two deal and she rolled her eyes, typed some things into the computer and told me $141 and change. I then asked how much his insurance would pay for and she rudely asked "what's the insurance?" I explained it was state insurance I believed was called Davis vision and she then replied "we don't take *that* insurance". I then told her we would just go the two pair option then, so he would have a backup pair just incase. Snarkily, she asked me how I would pay, implying that since I had state insurance for my child I wouldn't be able to pay for his glasses. When we were finished paying my son still had his favorite frames on and she told him "those stay here" and he didn't understand, because he has never been to an optometrist before, that the prescription has to be put in the lenses and we have to return to pick them up. Before I could tell him she said "I need those glasses we will call in 7-10 days when they're ready". He was very upset she was so rude to him and could've politely explained why he had to leave them and why he couldn't take them with us today. The entire experience of this was completely unpleasant and once we pick up these glasses for him I will never again step foot into another americas best location. read more

Everything is well-organized in the practice. It's clear that the associates want to make sure they are meeting the needs of the customer; even if it takes them several extra minutes. Upon entering, you are greeted with a enthusiastic hello by anyone within the vicinity, not just the receptionist. They want you to fill out the typical paperwork, which basically covers personal information and medical history. While they process your information, you can go back to the waiting area or browse the frames in the store. While I was browsing, one of the associates came up to help me pick some frames. It was funny, actually, because pretty soon the other associates were over to give me their yay or nay on the ones that I were trying on. It was nice to have an honest opinion; they really want to make sure you look and feel good. haha The technician was out to get me after a short few minutes and take me to the pre-test room. When you enter the room may seem a bit intimidating because there are a lot of machines, but she made sure to explain everything thoroughly so I knew what and why I was being tested for. There's an optional test in there... something called a visual field test. You pay an additional fee for it but it's minimal considering all the eye conditions it can help detect. The puff in the eye (i hate it so much!) was still a part of the process, but the newer machine seemed to make it not as bad as I remembered it. The doctor was great! Very friendly and informative. He has something like twenty-something years of experience so I knew I was in good hands. After he filled out my new prescription he led me out. Something met me almost immediately to help me determine what kind of glasses I might get. I've never seen a deal like this! 2 complete pairs for 69.95??!! what??! Granted, that's only if you don't need bifocals and stay within the parameters of the deal (ie. the designated frame costs and the lenses). They offered me extras, such as a warranty and special coatings (UV and scratch resistant), for a few more dollars but I decided to just stick with the 69.95. In total I paid around $85 for two complete pairs of glasses (b/c of the extra special test i agreed to). Overall it was a great experience. I'm glad they're here and will be going back again for sure. It's cool too since they are a "franchise," you can move and still benefit from America's Best. read more

"If you want something cheap, you're going to pay for it." After owning the same pair of glasses for 7 years (purchased from Optivision on the commons), I decided to buy two for $69 each from America's Best. Big Mistake. Pair one - "Tap Out" brand: Lasted for about a year before the nose-pads/pad-arms kept falling off. I was able to salvage the pieces and bring them to the store, but was told they would not repair them. I was able to insert the piece back into the eye wires, but it kept falling out. When I finally lost the piece, America's Best said they could not/would not replace it; and I would have to purchase a new pair. Each of these interactions were brief. I received absolutely zero assistance. Pair two - "Panama Jack" brand: Was able to wear these for about an hour before realizing they were crooked and hurt my face/head. Brought them in to get adjusted and was told they did not offer that kind of service. They did not offer any suggestions for local vendors who could assist. They did not offer anything. Good glasses are expensive. They should be. If you want a pair that is going to last AND someone who is going to help you throughout your glasses buying/wearing experience, DO NOT GO TO AMERICA'S BEST. Shop local - I highly recommend Optivision; but anywhere else would be better than this 'cookie-cutter' operation. read more

The optometrist was friendly but incompetent. They obviously have a "quantity over quality" philosophy and attempt to cram through as many patients as possible. I went in because I was having trouble with my contacts and thought I needed a new prescription. The script they gave me made my vision considerably worse. I went to a (real) optometrist with their own practice and my new prescription was .75 off in one eye and .25 off in the other. It was more expensive but considering my trip to america's best was tantamount to flushing $75 down a toilet - well worth it. Don't bother. Edit to update: I was contacted by customer service to resolve this issue. I gave them my email address and they never contacted me again. While moving my daughter in to college (sniff) my sunglasses broke. It had not been a big deal because of the rain, but suddenly the sun came out. They were near Bed, Bath and Beyond. I ran in, hoping they could fix them. And they did. I offered to pay, but they would not take my money. In retrospect, I should have left a tip. I felt dizzy and vomited every time I wore them. i went back to America's Best, but the optometrist reiterated that he had given the correct prescription! He refused to listen to me. Months later, I got an eye exam in a different location, and my new optometrist said that I did not have astigmatism and that my eyes had gotten .25 points stronger. I went here after being treated poorly at a different franchise. I was amazed how great the service was. Tracy helped me pick out my new frames. She was AMAZING! I am very picky and had a hard time picking out frames because I have a strange nose. She spent so much time with me picking out frames. She let me know when a pair didn't fit right or looked bad on me. It was wonder to have an objective opinion. She wasn't trying to push the expensive frames on me. I received two pairs of glasses and a free exam for $100. The doctor was also very honest. He fixed a problem I've had for years. He even said he didn't think I needed progressives. Thank the Lord! I am very very happy with the service I received. Tracey deserves special recognition! Don't let her go anywhere! I live over an hour away and would drive here every time from now on! read more

My husband and I needed glasses and decided to try Americans best. We normally drive to Syracuse to a big name store, but decided to give these guys a try. The exam was great. They answered our questions on the different types of lenses. When we asked to have a copy of the prescription so that we could do some shopping around and compare HD lenses and prices, they were friendly and polite. I was very skeptical about the quality of the lenses but we decided to take a chance. I have to say that I am very, very happy with my glasses. Now I don't have to drive to Syracuse to get glasses, we can get them here in Ithaca. I would recommend Americas Best to anyone. Their HD lenses are made by Nikon Optical, which make some of the best camera lenses in the world. You can't do any better than that. read more

I have gone to this America's Best (i) for 2 eye exams, including a contact lens exam, (ii) to replace an old glasses frame, and (iii) to buy new glasses on three separate occasions. The first time I visited this location my experience was overall good. The appointment with the doctor seemed a little rushed, and he spent very little time with me but the staff was good. About a year later my glasses broke and the staff kindly helped me find a replacement frame that the old lenses could be used in. In general my interactions with this America's Best location have been pretty great. However, my last visit was horrible. In 2017 I ordered a new pair of glasses. The staff (when I say staff all problems described with this pair are based off of interactions with a single staff member) did not measure my face or anything. When the glasses came and were too loose the staff member insisted they fit (the arms did not even touch my ears, the weight was solely on my nose), and that I take them home to get use to them. I was so annoyed with the glasses that I turned around within 5 min and asked him to fix them. The staff member, again without looking at my face or how the glasses fit, adjusted the frames. The frames seemed to fit fine, and the staff member said they looked good. However, by the end of the next day the tops of my ear were sore, my head hurt, and I had a noticeable mark on my ear and the side of my head. I took the glasses back in, adjustments were made again, and I went home. I want to note that I directly asked the staff member why he did not look at how the glasses sat on my face. He told me all plastic frames sat the same so he didn't need to. The next day at the gym the glasses literally fell off my face. I then went in for a fourth time (so I missed work on 4 separate occasions). The staff member said there was nothing he could for me. Annoyed I left. I then decided I wasn't going to take this and went back to the store. I finally got a different person to work with me. As soon as she saw how the glasses fit, and listened to my history with the other staff member she exchanged my glasses for a new pair. When they came in she sat down and checked to make sure they fit correctly. I have had no problems with my glasses since then. read more

I'd been here for an exam and glasses and had a positive experience a couple of years ago. Then I moved to MA. I couldn't find anyplace to get glasses here that wasn't way too expensive, and even when I was willing to pay, the people in the shops were rude to me. So, I contacted Am's Best in Ithaca. They were willing to work with me. On my next visit to Ithaca, I was given wonderful attention. I picked out my glasses, handed them my prescription. They took excellent and careful measurements. The glasses arrived in the mail (for only $5 shipping) in lovely cases and fit perfectly right out of the box. It cost me half of what I'd have paid for one pair here in MA. When the measurements are taken for trifocals which are very expensive no matter where you go, the technician at the Ithaca location uses a black pen to mark the spot. This never ever goes away. It appears the ink spot is gone, but it remains and can be irritating in different lighting. This is the second time I have had good glasses spoiled with an ink spot. How silly to ruin something with an ink spot. Maybe it is just me that can see this or is bothered by this because why would they be doing this without other complaints. So, I will not return for this simple reason. read more

They may offer more expensive items but I never felt it was high pressure and I actually appreciated knowing what else was available. I went to this location a few years ago (2013) and had a terrible experience there. While the staff was friendly, they apparently knew nothing about fitting frames to a person's face. It took me over seven visits to correct the issue (had to change frames twice eventually settling for a significantly less expensive frame and wasn't refunded the difference even though the fault was theirs and they offered a money back guarantee). The prescription also wasn't right and everything was blurry for months afterwards. The optometrist informed me this was normal and most people expected to see better than 20/20 (do people with normal vision really see everything in a blur??) Although I bought a non-reactive frame (I think I ended up with stainless steel) the frame quickly began to turn green from reacting with my skin, the metal coating on the frame and the coating on the lenses came off in places and the lenses began to develop scratches just out of the one year warranty. In over 30 years of wearing glasses, I've never had anything like this happen with any previous pair of glasses I've worn. Eventually, one stem snapped when I accidentally bumped into a door jamb. When I complained about the prescription and other problems I'd experienced soon after getting the glasses they had someone call me when I wasn't available to receive the call. I attempted to call back but the people there wouldn't at first acknowledge they had someone there by that name and, after finally admitting they did, offered to take my number but never returned my call. I spent almost $300 for two frames and could have and should have spent the same amount (or less!) for one frame that would still be serving me well today. read more

Be advised that the eye exam at this America's Best has a one year expiration date for everyone (most other places give you a two year expiration date unless the eye doctor deems a one year more advisable in your situation) and if you end up changing from a more expensive frame to a less expensive frame for -any- reason, you will lose the difference in price (something I wasn't informed of before I purchased my eyeglasses resulting in a loss of $40 when the more expensive pair proved to be completely unusable due to fogging issues). Also, some of the sales reps lack the necessary experience and expertise to help you select frames that will properly fit your face (both of my first two frames had fitting issues resulting in seven trips to get everything straightened out-if you have concerns about the fitting ask to talk to the manager there who seems to know more), and their selection of women's stainless steel and titanium frames seems more limited than elsewhere (many different frames in essentially the same shape). Their sports frame selection is the best I was able to find although I was unable to use either of two I tried (both fogged up when I was just sitting and would have been impossible to see through if I had actually done something semi-strenuous with them on). Polycarbonate lenses come with a one year breakage and scratching warranty (the later being unusual for this type of lenses). Unfortunately, I'm less than pleased with the clarity of the lenses in the two eyeglasses I finally ended up with (polycarbonate with anti-reflective coating). I can see better than 20/20 but most of the text I read at all distances (including distances I would expect to be crystal clear) is blurred. All objects look fine, but writing -from street signs and bulletin boards to the spines of books- is definitely fuzzy. Perhaps my situation is unique (I have yet to speak with someone who purchased the same type of lenses from this location), but is frustrating none the less, especially considering that I paid almost $300 for the two pairs and exam. I have spoken about my problems with the people there, and the eye doctor was able to improve the situation somewhat by bending the frame to better fit my face after rechecking my sight but the problem remains. The prices aren't bad at this location if you are looking for two pairs of glasses and are planning to have an eye exam at the same time (at $45 the eye exam is at least $5 less than all other places I checked and the $45 is deducted from your bill if you purchase two glasses), but I would recommend that you also check some of the other places in town as well, especially if you aren't getting an eye exam at the same time. Empire Vision's prices for some of their frames with polycarbonate lenses were the same or less even after adjusting for the eye exam discount at America's Best. Although they initially, seemed to have fewer options, the options they offered had a greater variety in frame shapes (at least in small women's stainless steel and titanium frames). I also understand BJ's carries very attractive eyeglasses at a competitive price. Walmart's prices for one pair could be better than America's Best, but they don't offer much of a discount on a second pair making them much more expensive than America's Best for two pairs of glasses with the frame and lenses types I wanted. Update: While I am finally beginning to see more clearly with my last two pairs of eyeglasses after several weeks of wearing them, I still don't have the clarity I recall with my old Walmart pair with the same type of lenses (polycarbonate with anti reflective coating). I'm not sure at this stage whether this is the result of the lenses or the frame (which is much narrower top to bottom than any other pair I've ever worn leading to an extremely limited field of vision and significant distortion all around the edges). The eye doctor did re-exam my eyes for free within the warranty period and improved the situation somewhat by bending the frames to better fit my face. I received an email from a representative from the national office but no response yet to my own email back to him (sent from the name Skyflower - perhaps the reason for the confusion?).
