I booked multiple rooms at Homewood Suites in Harlingen, Texas for a long-term work stay (over…read more$12,000 spent), and the experience was extremely disappointing. We went more than a week without hot water, and the only compensation offered was 11,000 points -- not even enough for one night. Several rooms had issues like leaking sinks, moldy smells, and one room without working AC, which forced my employees to move rooms multiple times. I even had to leave and stay elsewhere for two nights due to the hot water issue, and no assistance or accommodation was offered. On top of that, my reservation was incorrectly marked as a no-show after I had already checked in online, causing more issues for my team. For the amount of time and money spent, the service and follow-up from the staff was unacceptable. I've been loyal to Hilton for years, but this stay at Homewood Suites Harlingen has made me seriously reconsider that loyalty.

I was in the area for the holidays as my partner's family is from the Valley. I don't know much about the area but felt like we were in a good location for everything that we needed. It was super accessible to the airport, an HEB, a Starbucks and an Orangetheory Fitness. When I didn't want to leave the hotel because it was raining or didn't want to make the same mistake of driving in the wrong direction on a one way street (yikes), I didn't need to. The on-site gym was open 24 hours and had a treadmill, an elliptical machines, weights, water, and towels. The on-site and complimentary breakfast and coffee was decent (tortillas would have been nice though). And I even noticed on my room fridge a sign that said the would pick up some groceries for me if I needed. I don't know if the grocery service is true of all Residence Inn's but if not, it aligns with my experience here with the staff that was super friendly and accommodating.

So on a trip to Harlingen I checked into the Residence Inn right next to the Bass Pro Shops. Not only was the location a plus, due to Bass Pro shops being on the same parking lot, the hotel is much newer and in much better condition than the Hilton I normally stay in. Everything was high quality from my check in experience, the evening reception with food beer and wine, to the workout room which had not only treadmills but free weights as well. This far outshined the Hampton Inn that I normally stay in on Ed Carey Drive. This is a really nice hotel at a reasonable price and I would recommend to anyone: clean, quiet, comfortable, and very dark window shades to be able to sleep at night as well as in a very quiet location.

On the other hand, the mattress is an old spring mattress that should have been replaced some time ago, but it's serviceable. What prompted the review, though, was my trip down to the little store in the lobby. I'm a Diamond whatever with Hilton, and we get certain benefits at different properties. Normally, when I check in, the front desk will inform me of what perks I get at the property. They didn't do that here. I did ask, though, if I received the food/drink credit each day and she confirmed that I did. The credit is $10, by the way. So, I just went down to the little store thing in the lobby because I wanted a drink. Now, I get it - we're a captive audience, so to speak, so prices are going to be a little inflated because of the convenience factor. But... oh... my... gosh. A 20 oz. bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper- $6. A pint of ice cream - $16. I mean, it's the same ice cream you can get down the street at HEB for $4. Like I said, I expect the prices to be a little higher... but 400%? Absolutely ridiculous.

They do however have a bar in the lobby and it seems to be the only property in Harlingen with a hot tub! The front desk staff were excellent. The room was great, I just wish there were more channels to watch. They are right next to the local cinema and 2 minutes from a grocery store. Lots of other stores and restaurants within only a several minute drive.
