There really aren't many trees in southeastern Wyoming so this one is really interesting. "Discovered" by the Union Pacific rail workers when the tracks were laid through here in 1867, they actually moved the line sideways to avoid it. The railroad was eventually moved south, and the old road bed past Tree in the Rock was used as a wagon trail, then as the Lincoln Highway, and now as Interstate 80. The freeway splits around the tree, which has its own little parking area in the median and a spiky fence to protect it. It's called simply "Tree Rock" by its unromantic modern sign, which notes that "Limber Pines can live as long as 2000 years." It's a quick stop that will take you less than five minutes to explore. I wouldn't go out of my way to come see this, but if you are on the highway between Cheyenne and Laramie, it's worth stopping to see.

The Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument in Wyoming completely surprised us in the best way possible…read more We were driving along Interstate 80 near Sherman Summit and suddenly spotted this massive bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln towering over the mountains. It honestly feels like one of those classic American roadside stops that you accidentally discover and end up loving way more than expected. The monument itself is incredibly impressive, especially when you realize how large it actually is in person. The surrounding mountain views are beautiful, and the stop gives you a chance to stretch your legs while learning a little history about the Lincoln Highway and Wyoming. The area is clean, peaceful, and easy to access right off the interstate. One of the coolest parts is realizing this monument has been welcoming travelers for generations. It really captures that old-school American road trip feeling. If you enjoy scenic drives, hidden gems, roadside attractions, or unique historical stops, this place is absolutely worth pulling over for. We genuinely loved visiting and taking in the views. We stopped on a cold foggy morning and perhaps that added to the gravity and solemnity but it was impressive to behold either way. There is a small center with clean bathrooms, plenty of parking and some great information about wildlife in the area as well. It was very dog friendly and we saw lots of other pups while we were there. Don't miss this if you're driving by. Definitely pull off. It's worth a stop.

We were still able to see multiple boots and some sculptures. There is a wide variety in the types of art on display and I always appreciate that because then no matter who you are, you will be able to find something to appreciate. We also made sure to visit the Cheyenne sign just next to the plaza. The train museum didn't seem to be open when we were there, otherwise we would have visited that as well. All in all, this is a very nice space and I imagine it is great for gatherings and faires or just as a spot for people to enjoy the city.

This place is one of those old abandoned buildings with a story. For a photographer, I loved every…read moreminute of it. It would be the perfect backdrop for senior pictures. I wish I would have visited when I had a bag full of better lenses and more skill. So, yes, this place is CLOSED. It's not a business at all. It's an old building with tons of graffiti and it's cool! You can see the mountains in the background and trains run along as well. It's really a pretty place. The Midwest Oil Refinery was mentioned in the July 28, 1920 Laramie Republican as being ready to begin operations "soon". The plant closed in April 1932. The metal parts were taken for another refinery or sold as scrap during WWII. Much of the refinery was located on the west side of the street in the area now fenced off. According to former Albany County Sheriff Vern Breazeale, the refinery closing was the "best thing that ever happened to Laramie", because it meant the end of the stink that blew over town, smelling of rotten eggs when the wind came from the west. The ruins next to the old company offices were once the cement ovens for making coke (a pure form of carbon) from oil. Today the site is remarkable for the graffiti that decorates its dilapidated walls.

We were driving north on I-25 and I noticed the location on google maps, just south of Wyoming on the east side of I-25. I was looking for a little diversion so we took the frontage road drive off the highway to check it out. It gave us an opportunity to google and read up on the historical battle (?) that took place here. It's neat to see the terrain and imagine all those years ago as people tried to navigate their lives and this land. The rock formations are certainly pretty cool to look at. After reading about what happened there, I was surprised at the lack of space in this "natural fort". I'm glad we saw it and read about it. I wish we could have continued on north on the frontage road to get back on I-25 but google maps told us to do a 180 & drive south the way we came from to get back on the highway.

There are several formations but only a couple are accessible from the dirt road that leads to it. The remaining are beyond a fence on private property. It's unfortunate that the locals have let this site go to waste along with letting kids ruin it with spray paint and garbage.

The staff is super friendly and will give you information on the mansion. You are allowed to walk the interior and do a self guided tour and take photos. I love the retro furniture and learning the history of the area and people that have served Wyoming and lived in the home. A few pictures are being uploaded to peak your curiosity but I don't want to give away too much. Go for a tour and take some photos of your own!

Interesting tour of the house where the Wyoming Governors used to live. It was restored to its…read moreformer glory from the 1900s to the 1960s. Free to the public, you should really consider making a small donation if you visit. The tour is self-guided and we had the place to ourselves. Every room was well appointed with period furniture-- well it was a Governors house after all. The laundry room was interesting, as was the fallout shelter, for those of us who lived through the 60s. I'm glad we had a chance to visit and "see how some politicians might have lived".

The lovely ladies that guide you room by room through the house know the history and have great stories to tell. The architecture of the house is very interesting and the fact that the original details and furnishings are still there is incredible.

I went with a friend to visit Avery House earlier this week. We initially assumed it was going to…read morebe a short interlude in between other Fort Collins attractions, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trips! The house itself is stunning; having been beautifully restored to Victorian splendour, it's charmingly reflective of the way its former residents would have lived. But it's the docents who are the real stars here - they're a group of incredibly passionate, lovely people who take every group of visitors around to introduce them personally to both Avery House, and the history of Fort Collins as a city. We especially enjoyed being able to explore and ask questions about all the small details in the house, from the furnishings to the lifestyles and stories behind every item. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone living in, visiting or passing through Fort Collins for how it lets you take a great look at one of the most interesting portions of the city's past.

I love to visit State Capitol buildings, and have been to nearly 2/3rds of all 50 state capitols…read more This one allowed you to take a self guided tour with a map of each floor to help you understand where you can go and what to see. The ground has several sculptures around the outside, with one large cowboy riding a bucking bronco representing the spirit of Wyoming. The building had quite a bit of wood accents throughout and I really liked the restoration outcome with the wonderful stained glass ceilings in the senate and house chambers as well as the rotunda. There have been several restorations and there was a plaque for each displayed throughout the building. They also had a fun Hall of History where you enter through an old safe's door to get into a set of rooms with TV's and videos that can be played that tell the story of the capitol and the area around Cheyenne. It was definitely worth the visit, and I would recommend the stop to family and friends.

The rich history can be seen in the decor and will make you feel proud of Wyoming. Wow, if walls could talk! We should get involved in government even if it is just taking a tour to see what our tax dollars are funding.
