My father passed just a few days ago and all the out pouring of attention that Mom and the family has received from Meridian staff has been incredible. My has decided not to move out with any of us, we wanted to take her with us, we are all good children to her I promise ; but she decided that she feels so comfortable there that wants to stay. The entire purpose of assisted living is to provide dependable assistance and peace of mind to residents and their families, and unfortunately, that has not been our experience. Phone calls frequently go unanswered, emails are often ignored, and most concerning of all, there have been times when she has pressed her assistance button with very long response times. Today, we decided to actually test the response time ourselves. While we were there, we pressed her assistance button and waited to see how long it would take for someone to come help her. We waited 40 minutes and nobody showed up. That experience was extremely concerning. Fourty minutes without any response isn't just poor service--it raises serious questions about resident safety. What if my mother had fallen? What if she was having a medical emergency and was unable to call anyone else? An assistance button provides very little peace of mind if nobody actually responds to it. I would strongly encourage anyone considering this facility for a loved one to ask detailed questions about staffing levels, medication administration, actual response times to assistance buttons, and how emergencies are handled before making a decision.

When she answered the phone it was very unprofessional. She just answered by saying hello so my mom introduced herself, said that she was the mother of the patient there and it was dead silence then she repeated it and Elizabeth responded with "I know who she is" so my mother was just calling to get an update and that's what she explained and Elizabeth was being very aloof and finally, she says "who gave you my number" at which time I took the phone from my mother and explained who I was and said that my mother is just trying to get an update on her daughter and the lady explained that my sister's boyfriend has power of attorney again we were not asking for medical records or anything simply asking an update on how she's doing how she's feeling and the boyfriend gave us the phone number. I explained it to her and I explained to her that we are having a difficult time trying to get updates for her. I asked her if she could not have any empathy for a mother trying to find out what is going on with her daughter. This lady was being very cold. I told her I would send the screenshots showing that he had sent us her information. I even asked if there was someone else I needed to speak to to get an update and she just kept getting dismissive. When we hung up with her, I sent her the screenshots like I said I would and immediately the boyfriend called. So she called him immediately and he called back. This is so unprofessional and so callous I would not recommend putting your loved ones at this place because she was very unhelpful and had no empathy whatsoever.

My husband and I started looking for a place for her to live and ended up choosing Brookdale, Anaheim Hills. First, let me say, the place is beautiful! The rooms are spacious, the activity rooms are beautiful and there just seems to be a upscale, happy feeling there. The staff is WONDERFUL, they are upbeat, caring, patient and fun! Mom loves the food, and she is able to order off a menu. The chef stopped us one day and asked Mom if there was any meal that she had missed eating! He was ready and willing to make it happen. She needed help in and out of bed, getting to the bathroom and showering when she first arrived. The staff that assisted with that were great. Luckily she is progressing nicely, but we still have any help we need. There are tons of activities for the residents to do, even outside the facility! Mom is really happy and has met a lot of friends. There is a nice sized dog park and several doggie residents that make her smile! As for me, there are several little shops that are within walking distance, so if Mom needs something I can go right over to CVS, or Subway, or the donut shop! There is a nail salon, beauty shop, Papa Johns, Liquor Store, Eye Center, Thai food, Spa Massage and more! I saved the best for last. Veronica, the sales director, was the first contact we had, she explained everything and patiently showed us several units. We decided on the one with a balcony that overlooks the dog park and she made it easy and helped us understand how things worked. We finalized the move with Lana, the Executive Director and she was wonderful too! She patiently answered all of our questions and addressed our concerns and made sure that the transition was easy for Mom and us. Mom is fully cognizant and aware and loves all of her new "family". I would highly recommend Brookdale Anaheim Hills if you need a safe and homey place for your loved one. I

The care she receives in this home allowed my friend to go back to being a daughter and not a caretaker. They do everything for her from making her favorite meals to ensuring her safety. The common areas are safe, nicely decorated and kept spotless. The staff listens to everything she wants/needs and acts accordingly. From the doctor who owns the facility to every employee who works there, you can tell they care about the residents. They medicated everyone up, even if they didn't need it. I was my dad's power of attorney, and I was never notified that they were giving him medications that my dad's doctor had not prescribed. His staff were immigrants from the Philippines and they lived in tiny cubicles in the garage, they had very little or no training. I once saw a woman nearly choke to death. I think she would have had I not insisted he do something. They have beautiful grounds, but nobody helps them access the outside beauty. It's a Potemkin village. I am a lawyer and I quickly figured this out and got my dad the heck out of there. He should have his license pulled in my opinion. He changes his website all the time because of bad reviews, at least that's what I'm assuming. Do not put your parent here if you have any bit of love or care for your family member. It's horrible. I'll never forget how despondent I was when I realized what was found on.

And believe me, I felt sorry for whoever was…read moregoing to take on my mom because not only am I in deep in healthcare (previously in acute neuro trauma and now in outpatient/hospital admin), but she is heavily SURROUNDED by people in healthcare ranging from directors, doctors, surgeons, and nurses. On top of that she has family who loves and protects her very deeply. Somethings that stood out about ActivCare to me from the rest that made me choose them over the others: 1. There's only 2 levels instead of 5+ levels. You have to have memory issues if you want to live there so there will be no confusion or issues trying to determine which patients need what as the general needs will be similar. 2. You don't get nickel and dimed. Other places might charge for laundry service, food, incontinence, etc etc. not here. You just might have to pay for medications or the beauty salon or doctors. 3. There's a licensed nurse at all hours of the day and wake staff 24 hours. 4. Appropriate staff are constantly cleaning. 5. They usually have daily exercises. 6. There are outings. 7. There is a set daily schedule. 8. There's a tiny putting green if they choose to putt. 9. There's a tiny garden. 10. We could go take food and eat with her whenever we wanted. 11. All of the above was everything we loved, but the cherry on top was that it was THE BEST COST!! What I was scared of: 1. She wouldn't accept it and start declining. 2. She wouldn't adapt. 3. She wouldn't be nice to them. 4. She wouldn't eat the food. 5. She would be mad at us. 6. They wouldn't care for her like we did at home. What actually happened after she became a resident despite her craziness and Sour Patch Kid personality: 1. She relied on them and they comforted her. 2. She ate the food and almost too much that she got the nickname the Cookiemonster. 3. She adapted (we told her it was a private hospital to get stronger since they had exercises everyday and people to help her walk). 4. They accepted her sour moments and loved her anyway. 5. She felt comforted by them and especially by certain people and they would do her hair and paint her nails. 6. She actually got stronger for a bit and actually started socializing and participating. 7. Of course she fell because thats is inevitable but they cared for her the right way each time (and if you think because she lives in a facility that it shouldn't have happened then I'll tell you right now you're never allowed to hire anyone to care for your loved one or send them somewhere to live because that's impossible). 8. I got to see an Elvis impersonator, whole room karaoke, chair exercises, the biggest puzzles of my life, so many things that will now also be core memories for my son. 9. I became her daughter again instead of the stressed and burnt out default extra caregiver since she lived at my house. 10. They loved and cared for her more than I could have ever imagined. My mom's brain cancer eventually took over and even when it enslaved her to be loud and demanding they still loved and cared for her until she couldn't function. Imagine this mixed with memory and dementia issues. It takes a special soul and personality to work in an environment like this; I can save your life but I admittedly am not that person. All of these people are that person and if God gave me back my mom from heaven then I would choose ActivCare Yorba Linda again to help me care for my mom. The care she received makes it 10 times more worth what was paid for her care which was already a great price. If you're reading this sentence and contemplating, I think you know where your family will be going. Tell them the Cookiemonster sent you.
