Amherst Farmers Supply is a pet supply/hardware store that has way more stuff than one might think. I often forget all the stuff they have. Like tons of stuff for canning and maple tree water stuff. I have regrets for not visiting them more. Thus sill change. read more

Recently went to Amherst Farmer's Supply and was pleasantly surprised that one of the long time employees/owners recognized me and gave me a 10% discount on my purchase. My Grandfather had a small dairy farm and loved the friendly help and accommodating workers. I was given sage advice on composting and can't speak highly enough of this locally owned business that has been a stalwart in garden/lawn/pet supply in the Pioneer Valley. If possible I would give negative stars. These guys through the years have become lazy and uncooperative.My wife was quoted one price and I was billed another price ($300) more when l got my bill. Asked for half a yard of stone dust. Paid a lot more for it than I would have at Megan's Valley, but Megan's Valley was closed. They dumped it my truck, and it looked light. Got home, measured, and sure enough it was not 0.5 yards, it was 0.3 yards. Called and asked for some kind of refund and they told me they actually sold me "half a bucket," and that's what they gave me. Never going back here ever again. read more

It's March - get ready to order your chicks from the catalog on the counter! I really like this place. Walked up first aisle - horse liniment - worried that I was outa my league. But the friendly guy helped me pick out the perfect axe for this able but tenderfoot Californian transplant. They've got dog toys, artisan axes *and* axes by Fiskars, books on raising goats (if you mate a hornless female and male, there is a calculated likelihood for intersex kids, who knew?), cold pop, havaharts. For as long as I can remember I have shopped at AFS and until last week I would have rated them four stars. For many years we bought grain and other horse supplies there. We buy grain at Greenfield farmers due to the fact we changed gain at the suggestion of our vet and AFS does not carry the next brand, we still buy other supplies from them. When we build our horse barn we bought the metal roofing from AFS. Last week I went to buy some matching roofing for another project, I went three times and was not able to place my order because there is a single person who handles roofing and he was not there. I called ahead and asked if they had straw. A man answered that they did and I asked for the price. He said $8.95 A bale. I drove there and asked the person at the register for a bale of straw. She charged $21.90. When I asked why the difference she said the $8.95 Was for local straw and all they have is Canadian straw and it's sold in bales of 2. When I picked up the straw , the forklift operator asked For the number of bales I needed. I said I needed 2 since that was the minimum I could order . He said they come in single bales. A true gem of a store. Friendly service and a nice selection of specialty products that you won't find very easily at a store on Route 9. And yes, their prices are reasonable. Don't be fooled by the name. They carry much more than feed, grain and farm supplies. e.g., in my mind they are the place to go for all types of stones for the garden. Look for the stout friendly looking dude with the dark mustache.It's probably Mick. He's funny and very helpful. My dad brought me here when I was about 13 and that was about 35 years ago. I have been going there ever since for anything from bird seed to wood pellets. This place is full of history. Stare at some of the floor boards and you'll begin to see it. read more

I just called because I was having issues with my Harman pellet stove. It was surreal - in a good way - they sent a technician over in ten minutes - and now I'm writing this review basking in the warm glow of my pellet stove. Not only did Dan (the technician) fix the problem but he was willing to teach me how to fix it the next time it happens. So affable and professional. Three cheers for this place! They are just awful. STAY AWAY FROM AMHERST FARMERS SUPPLY. Their delivery people destroyed part of my garage door. When they lowered a pallet of wood pellets, the pallet caught the top of my garage door and ripped the frame down. When I complained to Mike Grybko (one of the owners), he told me that "it could have been the wind." Look at the pictures I posted and judge for yourself. I call that a ludicrous, intelligence insulting lie. And Mike knew that even as he uttered the words. In addition, their delivery people plopped a ton of pellets in the middle of an oil slick. They then stepped in it, and tracked it through my garage. Mike offered no compensation to me. He did not even apologize. Although his company did, at a minimum, hundreds of dollars of damage, I would have accepted almost any token. But I got nothing, I feel like my home has been vandalized. Do business with AFS at your own risk. If they screw up, don't expect them to make any attempt to make good on it. read more

We bought a great Pacific stove, new chimney liner, chimney cap and custom surround but 3 months later smoke was billowing into my house I called to report something was wrong with the stove. I was told by more than one person that nothing was wrong with my stove. They said that the warmer weather was responsible. After multiple calls back and cancelling the appointment twice, (third time's a charm, I guess), the guy finally showed up. He said that there was nothing wrong with the stove yet, he hadn't even started a fire in it. I told him to start a fire and apparent ly something WAS wrong with the system. He still tried to blame the problem on the weather, "It's been so windy" then our wood, "you must be burning crap wood" When it was all said and done there was a problem with the chimney cap which THEY installed. He called a chimney sweep who checked out the roof. When the guy was on the roof, Chad, from Amherst Farmers Supply just LEFT, with my stove in the middle of my living room, the hearth covered in soot and the custom surround (which also took 3 times to make it the right size) standing up against my couch. My husband, the chimney sweep, our contractor and myself were stunned. The chimney sweep felt so bad about it that he stayed to help us reinstall the stove while our 3 SMALL children waited for dinner. Then the surroud didn't fit and wobbled back and forth. For 3000 dollars, I think they could have done A LOT better, or at least showed some respect for our house and our purchase. NO WORK ETHIC and no RESPECT for the customer. Bottom line is that you get a lot of attention when you're looking to buy and absolutely none after they've taken your money. BEWARE!!! Oh and here's the best part...I had to pay the chimney sweep out of MY pocket. read more
