This is an old time hardware store in downtown Brattleboro VT. Three floors of everything you can imagine. I know that if it exists, they will have at least one!!! The creaky floor just adds to the charm of this hardware store. I will return!!! read more

On one hand, the B&R staff is always ready to help and knowledgeable about every-day needs. On the other, I brought in my 100 year-old floor lamp for rewiring and they "lost it" for about a year. I returned several times, but it remained lost; finally, after carefully describing it to a bright young man, he went up to the attic and FOUND my lamp! They'd put someone else's name on it; had it not been for MY perseverance and HIS listening skills, I still would not now have that beautiful 19th century floor lamp in my living room! read more

This has been my go-to hardware store for about a quarter of a century. They have a knowledgeable staff, and they carry every widget known ro man. They have creaky wooden floors and a pressed tin cieling, as a real hardware store should. Prices aren't very much lower or higher than the 'big box' stores but the staff knows what they're doing, so i'm happy to pay a few bucks extra. They have fixed chain saw which i though were beyond repair, and special ordered parts i couldn't even find on the internet. What's not to like? read more

Exceptional service. I was looking for recommendations for different models for the EGo electric mower and they could not have been nicer. I wasn't able to pick it up right then so they set it aside and it was all ready to go the next morning and they help me load it and explain the operation all with good cheer. They explained how I can get a $150 discount for just opening up a regular Ace account (not a credit card) and bingo it worked perfectly read more

This place is great. I bought a snow blower here at the beginning of winter; today when we went in to get a multitool, Brian asked if I'd drained the fuel tank for the summer yet, which I almost certainly would have forgotten. Amos gave us a really good run-down on the differences between the Bosch multitool and the Rockwell multitool. He didn't try to steer us--just gave us the information we needed. My first visit here was uneventful, which is a good thing. The store has a wide range of household goods and hardware. And on this particular visit they had everything I needed. The employees I spoke to were helpful, friendly and welcoming. It's a nice departure from the experiences I have had in many a Home Depot. read more

The mere fact that a store is local and locally owned does *not* guarantee that the store is one worth patronizing. I've had a lot of experience with local, locally owned stores whose staff or owners run their operations with an air of entitlement. That has never been the case at B&R, including through their transition to a new owner a few years ago. Was Mike, downstairs at the shop desk, skeptical the first (second, third) time I inquired about and then purchased chainsaws and other equipment? You bet. Was I intimidated? You bet. But he was nevertheless cordial and helpful and over the years, the skepticism faded and he took such good care of me and my equipment every time I came in. Happy for his chance to retire, but I'll miss him greatly. The thing is that everyone in the store is terrific. They're smart, good at their jobs, straight-shooters, knowledgeable about everything on the shelf and never in any way obsequious, if you know what I mean. You'll also never get an unhelpful shrug nor, if you call ahead to ask if they have something in stock, be told, "I *think* so." Southern Vermont is a big place and many customers, like me, have to drive 50-60 miles round trip to patronize ANY store so that counts for a lot. Case in point: I have an Ace wheelbarrow that needs a tire replacement. I was in Western Mass on Sunday -- no way to get to B&R before they closed. I tried to patronize a local Ace franchise that has some stores in that area. I drove to one of their locations -- turns out it closed a year ago but the Ace website says it's still there. I called the next nearest location and was told I'd have to come in and show them the tire before they could tell me if they had it, and in all events, they'd "probably" have to order it. No surprise that I didn't bother to make the drive to their location. I just called B&R. Within 2 minutes, I had spoken with the guy down at the desk (who doesn't know me, so this isn't about repeat customers) and was assured I could pick up what I needed today, no problem. I can find just about anything I need in this store and the staff is always available on the floor and very knowledgeable. There's usually someone that can help me solve a problem and/or carry a large item out to my car. The selection is great, the prices are reasonable and I see no reason to go to another hardware store when this place is super convenient, right on Main St. in downtown Brattleboro. Parking is around the corner at the back of the building with a rear entrance. read more

You can't find hardware stores like this anymore! We are so lucky to have it in our home town!! And that's what it feels like, shopping in the most familiar of places, with people who know you, helping and giving great tips! Yesterday I was having paint mixed while I considered which battery charged drill to get...2 clerks were helping me figure out the best solution and cost...while another was putting the ready-to-go paint (Calypso Beat!) in my cart. "I need a primer too, just a quart", I say. He, walking back to the paint section, is wondering how big my space is..."One wall, 24x10, but a huge window and door in it!" "OK!" He says, and and is back in about 7 minutes putting the primer in my cart, "It's dark grey, that will help a little with the color you picked!" And off he goes. Love it!!! And did I say that anytime I am in there, it's not unusual for a clerk walking by while helping another person to yell out hello, using my first name?? (Ok, that may not happen on your first time in...but it will happen if you are there with any regularity, because they will be helping you find just the perfect solution to and unruly problem that needs a fix!) It's not a sparking clean, new floors, shiny new displays kind of place...it's well used, creaky wooden floors....it's as if you can hear your grandfather calling to you from the corner, "Yep..that's the screw you want!"
