Through MINDBODY App, I tried to book a class and the app said "call business" so I did. I spoke to the teacher of the class who told me there was no room in the class and that I should come by and join in. But when I showed up, he told me that I couldn't participate in the class, which was for gym members only. So I traveled all the way over to this gym based on the assurance that I could be in the class. they wasted my time and caused me to miss a chance to work out elsewhere. If the classes members only, why can nonmembers book classes through MINDBODY? Given their screw up and that I had traveled over to their gym, I think it was pretty lame to say "sorry" and turn me away. read more

What is great about this gym: the trainers are good, caring people and their knowledge consistently amazes me. They REALLY know their stuff and love what they do. I have injuries and they are always able to give me tips and alternatives so that I can get a great workout without doing anything that makes me uncomfortable in terms of my injuries. If I have a particular issue one day they will give me new/additional moves to address whatever is ailing me. They create a strong community spirit and I always feel as if I'm working out with friends. The group classes are small and fun and you can always get a space -- and a good workout. If you are looking for social activities, they occasionally organize movie outings, after work drinks etc. What you should know: if you get semi-private training (their version of personal) you will get a personalized program and a lot of coaching when you're learning a new program (programs run four or five weeks). You will work out with other people (each working on their own program) and after the initial coaching on new moves, you might get a lot of tips on your form or you might not, depends on the day and how many people are training. While the pricing is fair (roughly $50 a session), it can sometimes feel like a lot given the inconsistency of personal attention. You can only come for a class or a semi-private session. You can't just go and work out whenever you want. The facilities are pretty basic so if you want a fancy locker room etc. this isn't for you. The trainers are young, there's lots of high-fiving and "superhuman" talk, but they make old folks feel at home. Bottom line: EXCELLENT training, high integrity staff, strong focus on safety, fair pricing, fun atmosphere, just be aware that you won't be constantly watched as you would with 1:1 personal training. read more

I have been going to AMP for almost a year and after seeing the results of working with Steve and his team, consider myself a loyalist. I can wax poetic for pages on what I like about this place which will boarder on creepy bro love, but instead will try to summarize some of the strengths in bullet points: - I started training with Steve after having my ACL reconstructed (nasty basketball injury). In my first session Steve did a biomechanic assessment that identified an alignment issue in my hips that may have contributed to the original injury. He then built a series of personalized programs to work specifically with my body structure and quickly regain the strength and conditioning to return to the sports I love. - In addition to being a strength coach, Steve has helped me with nutrition and accountability. Before joining AMP my body fat was 24%. After six months of training and some fun challenges, my body fat has dropped to 16.5%. I have more energy, a better motor, and my girlfriend once again finds me physically attractive. - You can feel the family atmosphere at AMP. The client base is diverse, however we all know each other and have fun together. The trainers are mavens in the field, genuinely care about your goals and are down to earth (you'll never hear "brah" in Steve's gym). Every month or so Steve hosts a charity boot camp where he teaches a 'free' class in exchange for donations to a clients' charity of choice. So cool. So there you have it. A great gym, with a great group of trainers, and great clientele working in a fun atmosphere. read more

AMP has put me in one of those situations where I want to review because the place clearly deserves 5 stars, but I selfishly want to keep it a "hidden gem." Looks like the angel on my shoulder won this round... ClassPass clued me in to this new-ish gym, two blocks away from my office. Intrigued by the convenient location and promise that a Fitness Foundations class would not be too advanced for someone who had never swung a kettle bell, I signed up. On first impression, AMP Fitness is small, brightly lit, and meticulously clean. Instructors and gym members frequently smile, high five and joke around. You get a warm welcome as a newbie, and that welcome does not wear out 2, 3, or 5 visits later. Classes are kept to 8 people or less to encourage 1 on 1 attention. I've gone to sessions led by Lindsey and Eric; both were quick to assist me if I struggled with a new move, and both were extremely patient if I forgot what I learned the week before. I vow to become the master of dead lifts if it's the last thing I do! Other notes: - Fitness Foundations classes typically take place in the basement. It can get a little warm in there, but not anything approaching hot yoga. - The women's locker room is tiny, but has all the necessities - bathroom stall, shower, sink, towels, a place to hang your coat - plus a squatty potty (I kid you not). TL;DR - The overwhelming sense you get from everyone at AMP is that they genuinely enjoy being there. So do I. read more

HUGE Fan of this place. This might be Boston's best kept secret when it comes to health and fitness (so I don't know why I'm on yelp informing the whole world). Anyhow, the staff is super attentive and supportive of your health goals. I worked a lot with Eric Temple and once with Lindsey. Eric's extensive experience as a baseball coach allows him to have amazing in-depth knowledge of the shoulder movement and of course the whole body and movement (he's given me some great workouts and stretches that have helped significantly with minimizing my injuries). The group exercises are extremely thoughtfully devised and customizable to injuries or weaknesses. Lindsey's fitness and teaching background are really great for the HIIT type of training (and her high level of energy and patience with me). Never taken a class with Steve, but he's been super attentive and supportive of all his clients (even those on ClassPass - which I'm one of them). You can tell he's passionate about his start-up. If I lived in Boston, I'd be investing my resources at AMP Fitness. read more

Steve, Lyndsey and their team have successfully created an inviting no judgment environment in which regardless of where you are in your fitness journey, there is a place for you. Myself have been attending the small (max 8 people) classes and love them. After a stressful day at work, I look forward to spending an hour bettering myself and having fun with others. I first went to AMP when I was using ClassPass and immediately loved the atmosphere - strength-based classes that were tough, but in a friendly atmosphere. At AMP, you are truly only competing with yourself, unlike other gyms that display peoples finishing times or total miles in a way that implies someone is "winning" at exercise. Fitness isn't a competition and Steve, Lindsay, and Eric make sure everyone is working their hardest, but at their own level. After showing up a bunch of times for group classes and "Amp camp" classes, I decided to switch to a 3x per week membership rather than have ClassPass - I liked ClassPass, but it is heavy in spin and barre, classes I like but don't love. AMP has bootcamp HIIT-type classes and strength-based kettlebell classes, which I love! Lindsay, Steve, and Eric are awesome and they are always on the lookout to make sure form is completely correct, which is a great help. Everyone in the classes is always super friendly - 7:15 AM classes are a great way to get the day started! If you are new to Boston or looking to switch gyms, I highly highly recommend AMP Fitness! I think they let you come in to test out a class to see if it fits with your workout style - definitely come check it out! read more

These trainers are FANTASTIC! They're supported, dedicated, and they really want to help their clients. I went to AMP for the summer, while I was home from school, and I can honestly say that I've never had a better workout experience. The team worked with me to make a program that would fit my needs and would help me get the body I wanted, while still working in my range of ability. At one point, Eric Temple, one of the trainers, adjusted my program on the spot because he learned I experience chronic knee pain. The community feeling of AMP is great too. It really is like a large family. People will cheer each other on and joke around together during their workouts. Even the trainers will joke around with clients, and make sure everyone knows they're truly welcomed in the AMP family. Going to AMP, and working out with Steve, Lindsay, and Eric, has truly changed me. I've never felt better physically or in confidence. I recommend their training to anyone looking to get in shape or stay in shape. You may have to deal with some hilarious remarks while you're working out, but--hey--it's a good ab workout. :) read more

This gym is as good as it gets. The space is clean and spacious and has a welcoming, non intimidating atmosphere. The work outs are always changed up a bit, so you won't get bored. The trainers/coaches are very personable. They give each person individual attention and make sure that everyone has great form while doing each exercise. If you have an injury, they will give you an alternate version of the exercise if it interferes with your injury, which is nice. I have seen great results since I started to work out here. Also, the trainers are funny and have good personalities. Who wants to work out with someone boring and dull? It's nice that they have a sense of humor. Awesome place! read more

I found AMP through ClassPass and immediately was drawn to the kettlebell work in their small group classes. A ClassPasser for 2 years, I have been to a lot of studios in and around Boston and few offer kettlebells in their classes never mind teach proper technique. You will learn kettlebell swings, deadlifts, rows, squats, press, halos, cleans, get-ups, etc. If learning kettlebell techniques is why I sought out AMP, I stayed for the people and program. The trainers here are fantastic! I work with Eric and Mondays and Lyndsay on Wednesdays, both are very knowledgeable trainers and keep the classes challenging but still fun. All of the trainers make an effort to coach each individual - no matter if it is your first day or you come 4 times a week - correcting form and addressing specific concerns. I've had IT band issues for years and Steve has taken the time to work with me and recommended specific exercises for me to do in class and at home. It is obvious that team puts a lot of thought and preparation into each month's small group classes. Each week every month builds upon the week before. Week 1 introduces new skills and emphasizes form and recovery and weeks 2 & 3 continue to build up to week 4 when the reps are longer, heavier and/or more complex. It's such a great way to run the classes and keeps me motivated to do something a little better each week. The other thing to note about the small group classes is they all start with some foam rolling and functional movements like single leg glute bridges, bird-dogs or t-spine rotations (look them up, its OK I didn't know what a t-spine rotation was at first either!) and end with breathing. You can't find many studios in the city that incorporate this in their classes. My body has never ached less and felt better, that time in class has become just as important to me as the heavy swings! Bottom line, I've tried a ton of studios through ClassPass and loved AMP so much that I ended up purchasing a separate membership package with them. read more

The instructors are nice. The facilities are not. Tire rubber mats are used in the kettlebell session which looked dirty. The lockers are very small and wouldnt fit my bag. Bring your own locks if you need to use these. I looked at the rates and couldnt believe that they charge upwards of $100 per month for classes. I've been to much nicer and cleaner gyms at half this price. read more

I came to AMP because the trainer I loved was moving. I gave AMP a shot for 8 months. It wasn't cheap and the atmosphere of chattiness didn't sync with my idea of walking in and working out. Music SUCKS. Not a lot of equipment. I moved on because I didn't want to pay for what I was getting and now I owe my previous discounts back (I did sign a one-year). I made slow gains with the training (their trainers are knowledgeable). On my own, working in a BCYF gym, and SMASHING it! If you want to listed to radio-pop and chat about your week, this place is for you. read more

Steve, Lindsay, and Eric are fantastic! They treat you like family and the gym atmosphere is fun! I have played sports my whole life and been through personal training sessions, read Mens Health magazine etc, and what they do at AMP, their philosophy and approach is very different from anything I have ever experienced. I learned more in my first few weeks there than anything else I have experienced. The staff are very informative and genuinely cares about your success and fitness goals so that you move like a NINJA! I never thought I'd be doing the exercises they taught me, the training workouts are all customized to each individual based on the initial assessment. I found out that my shoulder is out of whack and that I am a "desk guy" so it starts off with improving my movement first before moving into what everyone else wants to start with: bench-pressing and biceps curls! No, they start you off a little less "sexy" but it helps you improve when you do the heavy-lifting. I highly recommend this gym, it is an experience like none other! The staff is truly passionate about what they do and truly want to help others succeed! As a Personal Trainer and Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coach I have high expectations for facilities and more importantly the coaches there. I came about AMP Fitness via Classpass. My immediate thoughts- this isn't one of those fancy schmanzy spa - boutique style fitness gyms where the clientele is generally female and wearing lululemon. The place itself is clean and simple. There's a small bathroom (decorated with cute superhero themed motifs and a lot of colorful chalk writing). There are 2 shower stalls, 1 bathroom, a small row of lockers and a coat rack near the showers. it's a small bathroom but it's fine because the gym itself caters to a smaller, more individualized crowd. I could tell right off the bat that the people who work there put a lot of thought, heart and effort into the gym to make it personalized and welcoming. it's the sort of gym where you go to work out hard. and where everyone also knows your name (and are IG friends too). where they really try to make the gym more of a community of friends. the environment is welcoming and super friendly and not pretentious. i go for their kettlebell classes. Eric has always been my instructors. I really like that he takes the time to really explain the form to everyone. perfect for a newb like me. the workouts fly by fast. the classes are small. it def gets a tad hot down there in the basement at times. but i feel like i'm getting a really good toning workout. the kettlebell classes are starting to become one of my favorite of classpass. AMP Fitness is fantastic. The facility, the location and the equipment are fantastic. So what makes AMP Fitness different from the other 30 or so gyms in Boston with fantastic facilities, location, and equipment? The answer boils down to the coaches. The coaches and their programs are what make AMP Fitness unlike any other. I've been coached by Steve, Eric and Lindsay. All three are extremely knowledgeable coaches. They were very meticulous in every aspect of my program. From creating the programs to watching me execute the exercises, Steve, Eric and Lindsay had scrutinized everything to ensure my safety and to make sure I was progressing. The coaches also have great teaching skills. After four months at AMP, I learned a great deal about fitness and exactly what works for me personally. Before going to AMP, I thought of myself as someone who had an extensive knowledge of fitness and exercise. After two sessions with Steve, I quickly realized I knew nothing! I believe about 90% of what the AMP coaches had prescribed to me in my program was something I had never done before. The programs the AMP coaches designed for me were extremely hard and extremely fun. The AMP coaches are definitely NOT those trainers who scream and yell at you to "PUMP IT!!". Their teaching methods are very "Zen". The coaches place a great emphasis on good form as well as applying the correct thought processes into each movement. Aside from being three elite coaches, Steve, Eric and Lindsay are great people as well. Their friendly, upbeat, and compassionate personalities have created an amazing community at AMP. Also, the coaches have created a very safe environment at AMP. During my time at AMP, I never felt the coaches were judging me in any anyway. I felt they were always supportive of my goals and my progress. The bottom line is, if you are serious about learning how to workout, get in shape, or look better, visit Steve and his coaches. I was referred to AMP by my awesome physical therapist at Joint Ventures. I had a pretty debilitating injury, and after a year of treatment, I was super eager to get back to working out, and ultimately, to dance. My physical therapist wanted to make sure I started up again at a place where he was sure I wouldn't re-injure myself. I began semi-private training about 3-4 months ago and I can safely say that I have never felt stronger or more sure of myself. Before my injury, I had trained with a few different trainers at a few different facilities. The most shocking part about training at AMP is that I never knew how much I was doing wrong before! As an example, I always thought I just couldn't do a full squat because of tight hip flexors, or whatever excuse de jour I had. Now, I have a completely full squat, with or without weight. The reason? AMP's trainers know body mechanics, and they give you a personal (and free) evaluation to understand you body and how to meet your needs. AMP doesn't just walk you through a workout. They use exercise and movement to improve your body functionally and aesthetically. Your training programs are built specifically for you, to meet your goals, on your time. I would highly recommend AMP to anyone, but especially those who have struggled with frequent injury. read more
