This gym is extremely annoying and does not make this space accessible. A worker recently interrupted my partners workout and rudely told him to leave despite still having 5 minutes before the establishment closed. Owner has also complained about weights hitting the floor in a supposed attempt to be mindful of occupants downstairs. Extremely unprofessional - go elsewhere. read more

Only been to the Z5 class twice but it is seriously one of my favorites. The class consists of 15 different exercises that you only do once for two minutes with a one minute break in between each exercise. It's great because you never get bored, and if you hate something, you never have to do it again. The gym is very clean and they give you these cool heart monitors so that you can see how hard you are working. The only reason I took of a star is because both times I went the instructors weren't great. They explain the workout once in the beginning and expect you to remember everything. They don't come around and help and you have to come to them if you need something. Everyone is really nice, But It's not the best run class. read more

I can't say enough good things about this gym. I've been coming here for a couple years and I'd never go anywhere else. The gym was closed this summer for renovations and it was well worth the wait! It was sort of run down before, but I kept going because the staff was awesome. Now its a beautiful club with the same great staff, what more could you ask for?! Plus, they now offer these classes that are honestly the best workout I've ever had. The trainers really push you and the exercises are amazing. I've never pushed myself so hard in my life and now that I'm seeing results, I'm hooked! I joined Zone5 a week after moving to Boston and it was one of the best choices I made during my three years living there. This is by far the most affordable gym in the Boston area. It's super clean, and weights and equipment are always available. I also took the HIIT classes here - again the best pricing and value in the Boston area- and I loved them. The instructors were always there to help and I walked away from each class feeling like I had gotten a great workout. I also want to mention how friendly and wonderful the staff were. I think other people on here want a fancy-pants gym and are suddenly baffled that that's not what they get ... even though they're only paying 60 a month. But name a gym in town that will give you new equipment, awesome staff and personal trainers, no crazy bureaucratized membership BS (BSC, that is), and no hectic atmosphere with lines for the cardio machines, all for 60 a month? And ... name another gym in Beacon Hill or near MGH. Yup, that's what I thought. Location isn't a minor concern, as some other people have suggested -- it's HUGE. I don't want to have to go across town just to go to the gym. And if you want classes, then you can't expect to pay only 60 a month unless you go to the Y or something. BSC charges 80 for its downtown clubs. The fancy places are 120 and up, plus the BS initiation fees (as though you were joining the Masons or something). BHAC is convenient, well-managed, has great equipment, and is a great deal. read more

If you're ever in a fitness rut, maybe havent been to the gym in a while, packed on 5 or so pounds. Come here so they can kick your butt. I had been seriously slacking on my gym memberships. So, I signed up for ClassPass in Boston so I could try out a few places and figure out a good place to get a membership. If I had any denial about my lack of fitness- it was corrected at 6:15am by Jason. It was an awesome, really hard HIIT workout. I forgot to wear my heart tracker, so I couldn't pay attention to all the Heart Rate stuff. I will be going to the gym more often. It's for sure a contender for a gym that I'd get a membership and go to frequently. I just wish they had more class times. read more

I wanna say this place is worthy of 3.5 stars, but I'm feeling generous right now thanks to my post-workout high, so I'll round it up to four. You could probably get the same gym experience for about $20 in the suburbs, but let's get real -- this isn't the suburbs, and real estate is pricey around here. It looks pretty clean and the equipment is new, and there are a variety of resistance machines. Plus, there's also a sauna in the ladies' restroom. I've been going to the BHAC on Friend St, which is closer to my summer job, but I think I have to make a switch, even if it involves 10 extra minutes of walking -- this one is so much brighter and less dirty looking and scary. Besides, the whole point of going to the gym is to work out, so I guess an extra ten minute warm-up walk can't hurt. Around Gov't Center/Beacon Hill, I have to say that this one hits the spot among gyms (unless you want classes.) read more

I have been going to Zone5 Fitness for over 2 years now. If you are looking for a high intensity class then Zone5 is for you. I feel very fit, more toned and healthier after joining this gym. The classes mix cardio and weight/body-weight training to give you the ultimate workout. The instructors are very informative and push you but you can take the class at your own intensity. The classes are filled with people of all ages, sizes, etc., so it gives a more comforting feel than some of the bigger gyms. The instructors are all so friendly and they give you that gym family kind of feel. I always look forward going to Zone5. read more

The best gym in the area! I'm not sure how the classes are as I only pay for the gym itself. There are generally not a lot of people who use the actual gym as it seems most people sign up for the classes. There's always a treadmill, bike, or pair of weights available even during the 5 o'clock rush. I've been there for over a year now and I see the same folks everyday, but there is a wide variety of people from huge muscle bound lifters to your average joe. The staff is great and welcoming and do their best to accommodate your needs; for example I will be leaving at the end of February for the Army Reserves, but they're willing to hold my membership until I come back. If you sign up for ZONE5 you also get access to the rest of the Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs in the Boston area. The others are great I'm sure, but this location is great for those of you who work downtown (02108) area. read more

I've been a member for over a year and this gym rocks! The advantage of the gym is that you can either do your own workout or join the high intensity interval training class or both! There is a unique atmosphere of an upscale neighborhood gym where you get to know the trainers and the people who workout at the gym. I have to give a shout out to my trainers Mike, Jason and Kadeja, who have encouraged me to keep going and reaching my goals and they go out of their way to help and guide me. Mike, the gym's manager is my personal trainer since I joined and he is the best trainer I know. It is not just about how he focuses on my training and my progress but also he also asks all the right questions and encourages me to speak up and be proactive about my overall weekly training activities and eating habits. In the last nine months I have been traveling every couple of weeks to Europe for work and Mike was extremely flexible with the timing of our training and encouraging throughout the entire period. The HIIT classes are challenging and I find every class to be different from the other, which to me is helpful to break a potential grinding weekly training routine. Your body gets toned and you feel stronger. After my first 6 months of going to class once to twice a week together with personal training I have lost 20 pounds and I completed my first ever 10K run!! So if you're looking for a serious yet with a friendly feel gym, professional helpful trainers and killer HIIT classes, check out Zone5, I promise you will not regret it! read more

This gym needs a few leg machines to be considered a "total" fitness experience. They do have the room for a leg press and abductor and adductor multipurpose machine. Would make a huge difference. The gym temperature is too high in the cardio area which can make it hard to breathe. The other thing is, for $69 a month you'd think they would have better quality paper towels and toilet paper......Rather than that stuff that falls apart in your hands!!! read more

This place is the only gym I have ever truly loved. It's very small, though well-equipped, which means you never have to wait but feel like it's almost an extension of your home. The staff is simply incredible. They learn your name! Why? I have no idea, except that they are just super nice. They revamped the space recently, and put in amazing new machines that use your own body weight that are both fun and help stabilize muscles and cut out classes since nobody ever came to them at this location. It's now clean, attractive, and just the right size--big enough to have what you need but small enough to not feel like you're lost in a cavern with elliptical stalactites. One of the best things about this place is that it's no-BS. They don't make you come in for a hard sell tour just to get a price quote like every other club. It's also very reasonable--I pay around $60 a month. They do daily, weekly, or month-to month memberships. They make it easy. They also sell 30-min training sessions, which for those of us who are not nesc. soooo into working out is a wonderful thing. I also want to recommend my trainer here, Mike Farina. He's a great trainer who can really help his clients but who isn't one of those meathead trainers who just wants to hurt you in order to brag to their colleagues about how "tough" they are. He's very good and knowing just how far to push you. Potential downsides: no classes, no pool, no courts But if you want a basic gym that's full of nice people and just has a healthy vibe, this is your place! Came to one of their HIIT classes, which are 30 second interval stations that's a mix of cardio and strength training +super friendly instructor (Mike) who gave me a tour of the facility beforehand and explained how the circuits worked. Then assigned me to "follow" to or the students in the class so I could watch what they did before attempting to do so on my own +super challenging work out that mixes up cardio and weights +the curved treadmill was dope and so hard. not to mention energy friendly! am looking into investing in one for my apartment -confusing! if you hadn't done the strength exercises before it's hard to do them correctly with minimum amount of explaining -quite crowded when I went (Saturday morning), so you were dodging people to get to the stations -had to bring your own lock for the lockers overall, I prefer the fitness classes that offered more sustained exercises with greater explanation and fewer station switches. read more

This facility is small and the machines are crowded on top of one another. I always felt like my membership fee was paying for their real estate rather than the benefits of the gym. If you live on the hill and want something close to home, paying for the real estate is probably worthwhile. Otherwise, skip it, and go somewhere else. read more

This gym is so beacon hill. Boutique neighborhood feel with windows and skylights everywhere. The classes keep things interesting and are the most budget-friendly HIIT in town. The manager is friendly and talkative in a non-creepy way, which can be a delicate balance when you're working out. Love it! read more

I've been at this gym six months now and love it. We had a bad experience our first time but the staff went out of their way to make everything right when they found out about it. Over time we've really come to appreciate the way they will go out of their way for their members and they really do have the friendliest, nicest trainers that will still make you feel like you've been run over by a train by the end of the session (which is a good thing!). It's not a large gym like I've been used to in the past and it can really fill up at peak times but most of the time it really is nice seeing the same friendly people day after day. All the equipment is kept in good shape and the facilities are always clean. If you want to lose some weight after work at MGH or get in phenomenal shape with a solid personal trainer, this is definitely the place to do it. Also, looking at the other reviews, I should just mention that membership does include other locations, some of which do have classes and one of which will soon offer MMA training. read more

This place is awesome! The gym was recently renovated and they started these new high intensity classes I can't get enough of. you work out at a high intensity for 2 minutes followed by a 1 minute rest for 15 rounds. The class lasts about an hour with warm up and cool down and leaves you feeling completely worked out! I highly recommend it for anyone looking to get a serious workout. Plus the gym looks really nice after the renovations. It was pretty rundown before but they put in wood floors, new tvs, and a bunch of new equipment, including these Curve treadmills that don't use electricity. I don't know how to explain them but they're awesome. read more

I've been a member for about a year now, and for the most part it's been a good experience. A small but clean facility with nice staff. However, they are located above a restaurant and as such have received noise complaints from the restaurant for noises caused by weights. They've since been cracking down and exercises like heavy deadlifts are more or less prohibited now. Fair enough, I guess? But then today I got yelled at for racking my weight too loudly while BENCH PRESSING?! Not only does this seem completely unreasonable, it seems unsafe to have to think about being quiet while moving heavy weight. Is ZONE5 still a gym or is it slowly becoming a library? Very, very frustrated as a member who primarily does free weights. Surely some flexibility needs to be given. Why should restaurant goers be given precedence over paying members? ZONE5 seems to care more about customers of the Korean restaurant below than its own members. Disappointed to say the least. NOT a good gym for power lifters. read more

We used to belong to this club but moved on to the Boston Sports Club facility in Government Center (1 Bulfinch Place, on Sudbury Street). The BSC facility is much larger and more professionally maintained. At Zone5 there were recurring problems with supply of towels, heated water in the showers and overall locker room cleanliness. If you've ever patted your body dry with cheap brown kraft paper after an icy midwinter shower, you come to appreciate little things, like consistent clean towels, hot water and soap dispensers that are regularly filled. Did I mention the time I killed a roach in the showers? It's because I didn't. I missed, it was Mike, another regular, who nailed it with his sneaker. But I had an excuse, I was barefoot and trying to hit it with my soap bottle, the one I learned to bring because I couldn't count on the dispensers. But that's maybe more than you needed to know. The root problem with the facility is a kind of credibility gap. The owners want to treat their gym as a cash cow, but in reality it's a sad little goat that they're milking like a Holstein. read more
