Went there on a Monday at 11:45, had one barber working on a customer and I was the only person waiting. Forward a little and ano barber come back from lunch and then another customer came in. they suck, they might be the worst barbershop in Delaware. they ignore how YOU want your hair cut and do it how THEY want, and when you try to correct them on how you wanted your hair cut they get an attitude at you and once I asked the barber to cut my sides a little shorter and he said "that would count as two different haircuts", what? is it not the same hair? how it that two different haircut? and so he told me he would have to charge twice the am for a normal haircut, so I have to pay more for your mistake? and they have a really long wait almost every time I go there, and lastly most of their barbers are very impatient and try to rush the haircut and are very aggressive while cutting hair two the point where they were violently whacking my scalp with a comb. they are the worst barber shop in Delaware and they've given me the worst haircuts I've ever ha, I'm never stepping foot in that shop ever again. read more

My husband just brought my son here to have his haircut and came home with his hair totally butchered. It is the WORST HAIRCUT he has EVER had. Not just because it looks nothing like the image he brought in or because it's not a good look for him, but because it is totally uneven with with a Minecraft like blockiness on one side and a tapered look on the other. I wish I knew what the name of the horrible barber who did this to my kid is, but I don't. So, there may be decent people working there but it will be a roll of the dice how it turns out for you. Was expecting a good cut but 'Lauren' seemed rushed and was hardly listening to my request-- she just did what she thought was right...which wasn't very professional. Terrible attitude, amateur scissor skills and at the end I had to trim my own mustache due to her inability. To top off this crappy experience she was like "Are you done? I have other people waiting for me!" There was no one waiting... For an $18 haircut it took her a whopping 10 mins to butcher my hair and beard. Go with one of the male barbers but weary these people think they're a lot better than they actually are! She should get less piercings and get more practice with the hair trimmers. read more

This is a brand-new place and the people who work here are younger, but it functions as a straightforward, old-fashioned barber shop. It's walk-in only but I have never had to wait more than a few minutes. Clean, bright, and cheerful. Very convenient location: walkable from just about anywhere in the center of Newark, and yet with a free parking lot in which I never have trouble finding a space. The people here are really friendly too. I'm pretty boring when it comes to my hair--I usually get it cut the same way, but I do notice that I tend to prefer certain haircuts. I live in walking distance to Amstel Barber shop, so naturally It's my first choice. However, every time I get a haircut here it disappoints me. The barbers seem to not really know what they are doing. I have never really loved a haircut from here, and I've gone 7-8 times. The most recent time was the absolute worst. My haircut looks really bad and this will be my last time going here. I would only recommend if you need a haircut on short notice. read more

I've been going to Amstel since they opened in 2010, and I've had my hair cut by just about everyone. As with nearly all barbers, it can be hit or miss, as another reviewer noted. I've had my hair butchered once a few years ago and won't use that guy any more. (Another barber at the shop fixed my hair gratis). I've had the best luck with Craig. He takes a very long time, but he is very thorough and I always get a good cut. With everyone else, I have to be very specific with what I want, or I get mixed results. Mike is a good second choice. One thing I have learned is that it seems like a lot of the barbers in the Newark area have all been taught at the same school, so I tend to get the same hair cut. They seem to show up a lot here. This is not a good thing, as things like thinning hair and other techniques seem to be foreign. I shouldn't have to constantly tell my barber to do this, or that. That's why I use Craig for the most part. It would be nice if they offered hot neck shaves, especially given the price point. Prices went up recently to $18, so I would expect a more premium experience. One other thing is that they do a good job with boys haircuts, though keep in mind there is no special pricing for kids. Otherwise, the place is clean, well-run, and professional. My advice: find a barber that you like and stick with them. read more

So my friends tell me that what matters is who you get but the person who cut my hair didn't know how to cut my hair and would got mad when I was asking him questions. After almost 30 min, he said he had spent too much time cutting my hair and demanded payment to which I refused because it wasn't what I asked for. If you're concerned about whether your barber would cut your hair LIKE YOU ASKED FOR, then I'd recommend you to save your money and time to check out other barber shops on Main Street. Not only are they're more courteous but they're just much better at the craft of cutting hair. read more

This is a really good place to get your haircut. Clean, unpretentious, ESPN is always on big screen, no waiting, great haircut only $15 bucks! 30 minutes in and out (I go during lunch). What else can a guy ask for? I wish we had a place like that in Center City Philly (there are $15 haircut places here, but I recommend to avoid them)! The only negative - you can't leave a tip on credit card, but I think for $15 bucks you can scrape $3-$4 bucks somewhere ;P. read more

I've been coming here for years to get my hair cut by Craig. Every time I go he gives me a great haircut and remembers what I want. He takes his time to make sure that he's giving a quality cut and not just rushing to get as many people in as possible. He values quality. Craig gets 5 stars. I've gotten my hair cut by a few other barbers here when Craig has been out. I haven't been anywhere near as satisfied with the other haircuts. This drops the review from 5 stars to 4. Craig is going to FL for the summer, so I'm going to have to figure out somewhere else to get my haircut in the meantime. If he left Amstel I'm not sure I'd go back. I have been twice and both times two different people they did a TERRIBLE JOB! My hair are longer on one side than the other there is no structure whatsoever. How do the hell in the world can you cut hair just with clippers especially on long curly hair?? If you want a DECENT hair cut GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! It's very hit or miss..i've been here several times only because there arent too many options in newark....I went in for a cut a few days ago to get a fade. The fade measurement I requested was my standard 2...After I got home and took a shower, I saw there were strands that the guy missed, and I had to get my roommate to cut those several strands...yes, there were other people waiting behind me so I see why the guy rushed. But that's a shiddy excuse for the shoddy haircut i got. my recommendation would be to go during their non-peak hours to have a better chance of getting a clean cut. read more

A colleague turned me on to this place after getting his haircut here. MIKE cut my hair and he is phenomenal!! He has his cosmetology license and he knows exactly what to do!! Each time I visit him, he instantly know how I want my cut without questions...unless I want him to change it up. This place gets packed so go early on the weekends!! There should be someone at the front desk area though. As people come in and sit down, it is hard to know who is next in line. I can't recommend this shop. It is nice to just pay for a service, and receive that service. Personally, I do not go to the barber for social hour in the chair. If I'm exhausted after work I'd like to have my hair cut and be on my way. The barbers seem to be insensitive to this and constantly badger for conversation. The antiquated check-in process, or lack thereof, also causes confusion for the customers. My worst experience was a haircut late in the day when the barber kept mentioning how he had plans at home that evening and seemed bothered that I was the last haircut as if I was at fault for keeping him there. In a service-oriented industry, I would expect the providers to do everything they could to create a positive experience for the customer. At Amstel Barber Shop in Newark they seem to be getting too comfortable on a guaranteed customer base. I certainly won't be back. read more

Amstel is now my go-to barber shop whenever I'm at school at UD. I've been there several times now (once during the week, once on a Saturday), and it's been quick and great cuts each time. Both times I've gotten to a chair right as I've walked in the door (though with ESPN on the big-screen, I wouldn't have minded a short wait), and the cuts are dirt cheap. I usually get a pretty simple buzz-cut, and they do it great here with those buzzers with attached vacuums, so you don't have to shower immediately after. Cuts are $16 (with free beard trimming, if you're so inclined), which leaves room for a tip. read more

Amstel used to be solid, and my go-to here at UD, but their quality has gone down significantly year by year. They now charge $23 for a basic haircut while most of the barbers at the shop are substandard. They rush and seem to get confused when I describe what I want. My haircut is extremely basic, so I would be even more concerned if I were trying to go for more of a styled look. Beyond all these issues, the lighting is very poor inside, making it difficult to notice mistakes while you're in the chair. Combine that with the odd practice of cutting your hair facing away from the mirror, it's easy to leave the shop unaware that your hair was just butchered. My most recent haircut, to put it nicely, was pathetic. It was my last straw. There are visible differences in length all over my head. The blending on the sides is just bad and the back looks like a bowl cut because it wasn't cut properly. Overall, I would steer clear of Amstel. There are surely better options around with more competitive pricing and service. read more

Not all the stylists here are created equal. If you go, do not get your hair cut by Lauren. I asked her to keep the length on top and give me a sharp fade down to nothing on the sides and back with no line. She gave me a gradual fade, a line in the back, and took half an inch off the top. On top of that, she was the most unfriendly person I talked to all day, her cutting my hair felt like it was an imposition, and she acted like she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for what I wanted. Like literally she just stared at me. Never smiled once, never affirmed that she understood what I meant. And now it's going to be a month before I can go someplace else to get the cut I wanted in the first place. I wanted to not tip her but I didn't want to hurt her feelings and ruin the rest of her day. On a separate note, they really need a sign that says they only accept cash tips, rather than telling you once they've already swiped your card and just ask if you want a receipt when you're expecting to add a tip and sign like most businesses. If you don't have any, you have to go to the conveniently located ATM and pay a fee and make change just to leave a tip. read more

Every week for the pat three years I have patronized Amstel Barber shop. Every year for the last three years Craig has cut my hair. I am so pleased with the quality here that I have reffered almost every guy I know here. Craig dose the best job I could ask for. He knows exactly what I like and how I like it. I have never been disappointed with a cut from this et abolishment. There aren't too many people who take the time as well as pride in cutting my hair as Craig does. It really is comforting knowing that I can go and get a great affordable haircut knowing that every detail is taken care of appropriately. Get any male barber and you're fine. There's this one girl who cant cut hair for shit. Maybe she can cut a girl's hair but definetly not a boy's. Also would it kill them to get a "take a number" system or something? It gets very busy and I hate having to memorize who came in before me out of my own courtesy. Amstel is the essential modern male barber shop. Everything from the barbers, to the price, to the atmosphere this place has it all. I know it is hard to find that reliable barbershop so it was great to finally find one that was well priced and convenient with its walk in service. The personalization with every barber is great that way I do not have to wait for just one. After only three weeks of going I was on a first name basis and no longer needed to tell them what I wanted. This place is horrific. Let me explain... I went in here to get a hair cut about a week ago, waited about 45 minutes. All in all, was satisfied with the service I received. What happened next is something that I will tell every single person I know around here because it is absurd. I walked out to my car and IT WAS GONE. I thought I must have just been crazy and forgot where I parked, but NOPE, it was TOWED. I called Newark Police Dept. and told me that Amstel has a contract with Ewing Towing in Newark DE to tow any cars that they think should not be in their lot. I went inside to explain the situation and they said they had no idea what I was talking. Waited another hour to have a friend drive me to the Ewing Towing and tried to explain the situation there, was told that Amstel has people viewing the lot from all angles and they claim I had "left the property" therefore I had to be towed. This is the sleaziest thing I've ever encountered in my life. Two businesses working together to scam paying customers. I'm curious to see how much Amstel makes from calling this towing company because as I waited to get my car back around 4 other people called that same day asking if their car was towed, and indeed they were. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. I will never go back and as a student on this campus, I will be sure to tell everyone I can to NEVER come here. Why give your money to a bunch of thieves when there are so many other places to get a decent hair cut. read more

If you're a regular and a big-tipper, you get a good, half-hour haircut. If you're just a walk-in, you get a mediocre haircut.

Been coming here since they opened, they are really great. No nonsense, old fashioned barber shop. I have always left there happy with my haircut and with the cool guys working there. I wish them a long and prosperous business here. read more
