Hey I have a fairly long beard (6 months) but it grew in a little uneven. can you do basic shape ups without seriously affecting length? i just want to avoid the clippers coming out and going to town?

Yes we do beard trims and you can let the barber know that you prefer no clippers. We pride ourselves on beard care.

Yes they all have extensive experience handlings long beards. Also, our shop has been apart of the Philadelphia beard festival and one of our clients (cut by Joey) won a category in the contest. I hope this answer helps.

My sister-in-law and I were both in our mid-to-late thirties, with hundreds of club nights behind us, and we arrived early enough to order espresso martinis and claim a small spot. From there, we watched the venue gather momentum as a diverse crowd filled in, the DJ played the kind of hip hop I prefer, and the energy became sexy and physical while remaining tasteful. After nearly 20 years of going out, I felt like an elder watching the torch pass to the next generation, and that perspective is part of what makes Blind Barber meaningful to me. From the first interaction at the entrance, the staff established a sense of safety and welcome. The bouncers were mellow, nonjudgmental, and clearly there to protect the night rather than spoil anyone's fun. Door staff set the emotional temperature of a club because hostility outside follows people in and compounds as the liquor begins to flow. Blind Barber started with warmth, and the crowd responded with friendliness, looseness, and a genuine openness to meeting one another. Back in 2009, Jason Battle gave my friend Ross and me our first DJ gig at Plan B, the slightly seedy space on the north side of Tompkins Square Park that would later become the original Blind Barber. You might occasionally spot a dead roach on the black-and-white tile floor; the back storage areas were a free-for-all, and the neon lighting had likely never passed through expert hands. It felt like an organic house party elevated a few notches, which was exactly why we adored it. We were initially too broke to buy a Serato box, but after the parties began drawing attractive crowds, earning enthusiastic feedback, and somehow making us money, we finally bought one. Plan B became both a launching point and a gathering place for DJs who wanted to do bigger things. Sam French was perhaps the clearest example, and I followed him for years as he rose into major gigs around the world, but the wider orbit also included Blu Jemz (RIP), Terry Urban, Omri S. Quire, and people connected to the Fool's Gold and A-Life ecosystems. You could also encounter DJs such as Ayres and Eleven from The Rub, whose legendary parties we attended at Southpaw in Brooklyn, along with many other creative people moving through downtown nightlife. At the same time, Meatpacking District bottle-service clubs were booming, but their atmosphere often felt constructed by promoters, while wealth and expense accounts set the vibe. Around that period, I was getting my hair cut at F.S.C. Barber on Freeman Alley and spending my nights at Plan B. Jeff Laub, Josh Boyd, and Adam Kirsch made the brilliant move of combining those experiences in the former Plan B space, creating a barbershop by day and a social destination after dark. The formula makes financial sense in expensive cities because the business earns money across more hours, while the genuinely local barbers and staff become a social magnet, promoting the place without making it feel like it's being promoted. That combination of commerce, culture, and local credibility is much harder to create than it looks. Now in my early forties, after traveling widely, having children, and doing a lot of living, it is deeply satisfying to see Blind Barber carry that spirit into Philadelphia and other cities without losing the original idea. If I were young and single, this is where I would come to hang out, meet someone, and hopefully get lucky; nearly 20 years ago, I did exactly that in its earliest incarnation. The concept is smart, social, and genuinely fun, and I honestly have a hard time imagining why anyone would dislike it. Blind Barber understands that the best nightlife is built around good music, interesting people, and the possibility that something unexpected might happen.

But walk through the shop and into the back -- and boom -- you're in a whole hidden bar. It's got that classic speakeasy feel without trying too hard. Parking-wise, there's street parking nearby, but it fills up quickly, so plan ahead. When I visited, only the upstairs bar was open (the downstairs one was closed), but the vibe was still great. The space is simply decorated -- nothing over the top -- but it works. The bartender was super friendly and made the experience even better. I ordered the wings and a Diet Coke, and let me just say... those wings were phenomenal. Some of the best I've had at a bar. The staff overall was warm, helpful, and attentive. One heads-up: I tried to go the night before (Wednesday), and even though their hours said they were open late, they closed around 11 because it wasn't busy. Apparently, they sometimes close early on Wednesdays and Thursdays if the crowd isn't there. Totally understandable -- just make sure to give them a quick call before heading over on a weeknight.

Customer requests are ignored and he basically just does whatever he wants and expects you to accept it. Here is the craziest part, he acts like he knows what he's doing but he will literally ruin your hair/beard. Lastly, he will try to sneak charge you for more than what you got. The prices you see will not be the same ones he charge you. I don't even want to leave the house after my haircut here...

first let me say that all the Barbers at gents are awesome. Gents barber lounge has been in center city a year now and it is one of the best shops in Philadelphia. Let's not forget that these Barbers deal with many different types of people daily, and they are respectful to everyone, even if you're having a good or bad day. and also lets not forget that they are human, just like us. I respect anyone who believes in a higher power, and who does their best to get out of Church and goes to work, so that we can feel good about ourselves, and Sunday is an opinion for some Barbers. in this world everyone can't be please, but as for me and the hundreds of other clients we thank Gents barber lounge staff and Barbers for the work they do everyday trying to make us feel good as well as look good. let us not also forget what Gents barber lounge does for our community and are kids. only there a year and they have given back to our community more then others who have been around for years. again, I take my hat off and thank you guys at Gents, I will always be a Gents customer through the good and bad, cause I know they have good intentions. read more

Believe the hype. I knew a day would come when I encountered a service I enjoyed enough to make me create a yelp account and comment, Joey and Gents Barber Lounge was the ticket. I first went to Joey down in South Philly and loved his attitude and cuts, was more than happy to follow him to his new spot, even when living outside of Philly and working down at the Naval Yard I would gladly go to Gents anytime I needed a shape up. Joey is awesome, extremely professional and personable, he'll make you feel right at home. His fades and cuts are excellent and his new spot Gents is modern, polished, and has a relaxed atmosphere with brand new equipment and mounted TV's to enjoy while you are getting styled. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. You can argue about various places to get a decent cheesesteak and the like, but for haircuts, Gents is your place. read more

I was a little nervous going because I have been going to my previous hair salon for many years and it was my first time going to a different place. I read the reviews of Gents and figured why not...and I was not disappointed. Since my appointment was very late in the day (7:30) I completely expected my appointment to late, which it was, but I did not mind at all. However, Joey was very apologetic about him being behind schedule, which I really appreciated. Everyone was very welcoming and the atmosphere was fantastic. Now about my haircut...I LOVE IT. I suck at showing emotion so it probably came across like I didn't, but I really REALLY do. The lines are crisp and the fade is great, so happy I took a chance on Gents. We found Gents for a wedding party. We went as a group the day of the wedding. The staff were very accommodating and did a great job. I have been getting my haircut there since the wedding due to the great cuts and also the friendly atmosphere I have always wanted to get a straight razor shave but due to my sensitive skin I was afraid to take that leap. Dre who has been cutting my hair for awhile now finally talked me into getting the straight razor shave this weekend. He did an awesome job and made me feel comfortable in the chair. The shave came out perfect and didn't irritate my skin at all. If you are interested in a shave I would highly recommend talking with Dre at Gents. Came here bc the reviews were highly rated. Left the shop thoroughly disappointed. My barber was Chris and she was awful. She did not appear to know what she was doing and took absolutely forever cutting the top. I had to stop her multiple times to make adjustments to what she was doing. This was made worse by the fact that she had the personality of a brick wall which made me extremely uncomfortable. I wouldn't let this review deter you from from coming here as long as you avoid Chris. The receptionist was adorable. The atmosphere was cool. The two other barbers were lively and their customers seemed happy when they left. read more

I committed the cardinal sin when I walked into the barbershop I didn't have an appointment and I did not know the barber who is going to cut my hair. However little did I know this is the holy Grail of barbershops. Dre was amazing. He treated every detail of my haircut like Picasso painting his masterpiece. I hope this place sticks around because it's probably the best barbershop in Philadelphia. I don't give five stars lightly you can check my critical reviews. I received an undercut from both the owner Joe and another barber named Tyler. Both times they came out amazing. The second time I even got a little spontaneous and got a design which turned out great. I finally wasn't embarrassed to put my hair in a ponytail. They also helped thinned out my thick curly Italian hair. Even though it is a "barber lounge" they knew how to handle my thick hair. I would recommend this place for men and women because every worker in there is extremely skilled. read more

One of my hobby's is hitting up barbershops in different cities and finding if people can meet the expectations of a newyorican. In Philly, John did just that. Out of the 10 major cities I have visited John has hit the nail on the head. His creativity, professionalism and skill all check out. I can't speak for the other barbers but John killed it. My toddler received an adorable haircut from Chris. I know he's little, but his hair grows faster than I can cut with decent effect, so I wanted to get him a solid cut that would grow out well. He's 1.5, so I was looking for professionals that had kid prices but were unintimidated by young clients. Gents made our drop-in totally possible. I went for the first time today and received excellent service. I got a gents cut and trim, came out with an excellent haircut, shaped up very well and smelling amazing (the products they have are excellent!). I was welcomed from the moment I stepped in and it felt more like a family barbershop than a "in and out" barbershop. I even got to play pool with one of the barbers there. I have been going to Joey for 4 years. He always gives me a great cut. His new shop has a great vibe, is very relaxed, and there is always a good conversation going on. I live in Graduate Hospital, but go out of my way to come to Gents. The quality haircut you get for such a reasonable price cannot be beat in the city. I've been getting my haircut from Joey for at least 5 years. Not once have I left his shop feeling anything less than completely satisfied with my haircut. He and his staff are always welcoming, offering drinks and entertainment before your appointment. My wife and I arrived really early this last time, so we played two games of pool. Brand new upscale, competitively priced barber shop in old city. I went there today and got a great cut and wash from Joey. The shop itself is located above Sweat Fitness and is outfitted with brand new top of the line equipment as well as several TVs so you can watch the game while getting shaped up.
