So I was being cheap and going to a local spot. There wasn't a lot of variety in the cut. the last time didn't work out well. I decided I didn't feel like styling my hair Anymore. I also wasn't looking in a mirror. That is until my wife started making fun of me. She was showing me photos of Jim Carey in Dumb and dumber. So I went in thhe bathroom and took a look. Goddamn I had straight bangs! I thought to myself I think I'll pay a little more next time. So a month or two passed and I still didn't know where to go. I've never found a spot that feels like home. So I was Perusing Yelp to see what was around that took walk ins. When I looked up Gents I saw it was a 17 minute walk and near Steap & Grind. Two pluses for me. Get there early grab a coffee and wait. I got there at 10:02 and they were already cutting. So I sat and waited. Conversation flowed easily between myself, the barbers and receptionist. I was having a pretty good time waiting. I think it helps to have women on staff so the conversational topics veer from misogyny and sports. Example: My old lady is such a nag I can't watch the game. I can't relate to either of these things. My wife isn't a nag and I do not watch sports. A lady that was there made several appointments online for her family but the online system fucked it all up. So the owner made sure they got their cuts at the time they meant to book which looked like great service to me. I ended up sitting down with Kim. I had some ideas on how to cover my bald spot. So I bounced them off her and she helped me select the best one. I was very happy witH how it turned out. She did not lead me astray. I will book an appointment with her again. They also had super cheap hair products for sale. Which is surprising since shit is normally super expensive. Anyway if you're looking for a spot to hang your hat and hang out.... this place has a great atmosphere as well as a great end result. read more

I went in asking for half an inch off the top and a low fade. Fade was a bit too high, more like a mid fade, but I didn't mind. However, he cut the top too short and now I look a little silly (see photo attached). Right off the bat, the employee was distracting the person cutting my hair (the owner) by showing him instagram reels, scrolling on social media and answering phone calls in the shop. Right as the owner was about to start my hair, he left me in the seat and took a phone call from his girlfriend. This place almost got 3 stars...I got there for my haircut appointment (maybe 3 minutes late) and the person who was supposed to cut my hair wasn't even there yet. I continued to sit there for a little less than an additional 10 minutes waiting for the guy to arrive. Just came out of the barber shop a couple of hours ago. Cut looked good, but my neck and scalp burned a little. Dre was rougher with the electric razor than other barbers I've gone to before- the process itself of getting my hair cut was actually painful. He also burned/cut me in multiple places with the razor, which he used on my skin without any shaving cream (basically dry shaving). It's been 5 hours and it still burns. I don't have sensitive skin and this has never happened to me before.He was very meticulous and took his time, but the burns are so bad I definitely won't be going back. (See photos ) read more

Kyle has been cutting my hair for about 4-5 months now? He is very good at what he does and always keeps me fresh. The great things about this barbershop are the atmosphere, the cleanliness, the pleasantries, and the welcoming environment. I have not had a bad experience here. I also appreciate the structured appointments that can be made online (def bonus) though I think they need to be 45 min not 30 min. No haircut takes 30 minutes. Kyle is a detailed barber that will give you what you want and if you want suggestions he is good at making them. He is also a social barber that is good at making casual conversation. **Someone said the price was high but $30 +5 tip is pretty standard. It is 2017... Before I get into this review, I need to make something very clear. Personally, I take my haircuts extremely seriously and my fade has to be on point no matter what. My hair is also not the easiest to work with so if the barber is not skilled or experienced enough, the cut will show as such. With that being said, Gent's Barber Lounge is my go to barber shop in Philly. The shop itself is sort of a hidden gem, as it is located off 3rd street between Church & Arch in Old City, on top of the Sweat Fitness gym. Once you make your way up to the second floor, you will walk through a set of glass doors and the receptionists will warmly greet you and offer you a complimentary beer. Yes, with every cut you get a free beer and not the bottom of the shelf stuff, usually they will have a variety of Yards beer or Coronas and lime in the summer time. Given a bar would charge you $5 to $7 for that same beer, calculate that value into the cost of your cut and you are getting about a 9% - 23% discount before you even get in the chair. This is just one of the many small things the owner Joey Danner and his talented team do to make sure their customers leave happy, fresh, and little buzzed (no punt intended). Booking appointments is also super easy as all you have to go to their website, gentsbarberlounge.com, choose your service, choose your barber, find a day and time that works for you, and you are good to go. Lastly, and the most important thing I want to touch on is the quality of barbers that work at Gents Barber Lounge. Like any shop, you will find the barber that will be your go to guy/girl but you do not have to worry about walking out with a bad haircut. The fact that he would reach out and try to turn around my negative experience goes a long way. I originally gave my experience 1 star. And I still stand by that for my original cut. not good. Made an appointment for haircut and beard trim. Arrived on time and waited 15 mins. Explained to Marley that I'm growing my hair to shoulder length and want a quarter inch taken off the ends. Well, the first scissor cut took 3 inches from above my left ear before I could stop it. I explained again that I just said I'm growing it out and did NOT want that much length cut off. I was asked " Whadda ya wanna do then?" Too late at that point. I'm pissed.
