The store is located on the main strip for the University of Delaware. The interior has about four barber chairs and they have retro style comic book artwork on the walls. They also play heavy metal, classic rock and grunge music usually on the overhead speakers. The place is brightly lit and is very clean. They get a mix of students and locals who come in for haircuts, beard trims and shaves. The service here is always quick and professional. They take payments by card, Venmo or cash. Just be mindful that there is no parking lot here so, you have to park on the street and pay at the meter. Also, the town parking attendants are brutal with parking tickets so, book a time in advance and allot enough time on the meter. Currently one hour is $1.25 and two hours (which is the max) is $2.50.

He takes his time to make sure that he's giving a quality cut and not just rushing to get as many people in as possible. He values quality. Craig gets 5 stars. I've gotten my hair cut by a few other barbers here when Craig has been out. I haven't been anywhere near as satisfied with the other haircuts. This drops the review from 5 stars to 4. Craig is going to FL for the summer, so I'm going to have to figure out somewhere else to get my haircut in the meantime. If he left Amstel I'm not sure I'd go back. I moved to the neighborhood about a year and a half ago. As a Christmas present, my mom bought me a $150 gift certificate to this shop so that I could get my hair cut locally while supporting an independent business. There was no physical gift card, only an emailed receipt. I used the certificate once in the spring for a shave and still had a substantial balance remaining. Today, I stopped in for a cleanup and showed the owner the same email. He told me the certificate had expired after one year and then said, "How do I know you haven't been in here a bunch of times before?" I explained that I had only used it once and that keeping track of redemptions and remaining balances should be the business's responsibility. He told me that his records disappear after a year. I then checked the shop's website, which explicitly says its gift certificates expire after 24 months. Since mine was still within that period, I showed this to him. Instead of honoring it, he again suggested that I might have repeatedly reused the certificate. When I asked how the business tracks certificates that are supposedly valid for two years if its records disappear after one, he told me it wasn't his responsibility to keep track of them. He then accused me of being "argumentative" and told me to leave. When I said I was prepared to take the matter to small claims court to get my money back, he replied that doing so would cost more than the gift certificate was worth. This could have been resolved in about thirty seconds. Instead, a customer who had specifically chosen to support a neighborhood business was treated as though he were trying to steal from it. Thankfully, Brandon stepped in, calmed the situation down, and cut my hair free of charge. He handled the situation with kindness and professionalism and is the only reason this review has two stars instead of one. I genuinely want to support local businesses, but I cannot recommend this one...especially if you're considering buying a gift certificate. Joseph, if you're reading this: your employee demonstrated exactly what good customer service looks like. Take a page from his book and establish a reliable system for tracking gift-certificate balances so your customers aren't treated like suspected thieves.
