My father is 99 years old and currently a resident at Amsterdam Nursing Home, and our family could not be more grateful for the care he receives there. Every time I visit -- even unannounced -- the facility is immaculate, clean, organized, and welcoming. Most importantly, the staff treats my father with genuine love, kindness, patience, and respect. He is truly happy there. He speaks so highly of the nurses, aides, and staff, and it is very clear they truly care about him as a person. That means everything to our family. His room is always neat and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere feels warm and caring. The location across from Cathedral of St. John the Divine is also beautiful and peaceful. This nursing home deserves five stars and more. Thank you to everyone there for the compassion and dignity you give to the residents every single day. read more

Was worse is that they supposed to take care of dementia patients and the just dumped the patient in the filthy room and there was no explanation of how a dementia person gets supervised when there's no staff around. Today, my grandmother is in the hospital battling COVID and another bacterial infection after spending 5 months at Amsterdam House. When I found her gurgling on mucus and gasping for air, I asked that she be transferred to the hospital. The nurse treated my concern as an overreaction. The attractive exterior, garden, and five-star sign at the entrance are misleading. They do not reflect the deeply troubling and inhumane conditions inside the facility. The facility is severely understaffed, with only one nurse and 2 and a half CNAs caring for 35 residents on all floors. Dr. Lansey also appears to be the only doctor serving the entire facility. I visited my grandmother every day because I could not get reliable updates from the staff about her condition. I was constantly uneasy about leaving her there. When I asked questions, the response was often, "I don't know; I was not on that shift." The lack of empathy and concern was clear. When I challenged the care she was receiving, staff simply responded, "Take her home." At 94, my grandmother has dementia with behavioral issues, and I can no longer provide the level of care she needs at home. Her insurance also does not cover home care and the Medicaid 24-hr homecare program ended. The facility also engaged in what I believe was identity theft and fraud. After my grandmother's Medicare coverage ended, they attempted to charge medical supplies to her Adapt Health account without authorization. I was able to block unauthorized orders for a wheelchair, walker, oxygen equipment, and shower accessories. However, the out-of-pocket expenses were charged to my credit card, which is why I reported Adapt Health to the Better Business Bureau. In my view, supplies and equipment were being ordered through certain residents' accounts for the facility's use, not for the individual residents. In conclusion, your loved one will be left in a filthy room with gray walls and bugs, or placed in the dining room with other residents sitting in wheelchairs all day, wearing soiled diapers and having no meaningful activities. A complaint to the New York State Ombudsman will not help (sorry Barry). Please do your research and schedule a walk-in visit. That is what I wish I had done. read more

Unorganized, poor communication with patients; not enough time given to needs of patients by doctors

I enter to visit a friend who was recently discharge from a hospital to a short-term rehabilitation home for recovery and maintain self-management to regain physical, cognitive, and emotional functions affected by one's health condition. There are too many negative reviews. Yet many are accurate and truthful. I continue to despise hospitals including nursing/rehabilitation homes based on past experiences of family members and friends' insufferable inevitable demise. Amsterdam Nursing Home reception was stolid and curt when I check-in who flipped through some papers to locate his room number. I had to spell my friend's surname three times as the male front desk receptionist/ security guard is oblivious and inept of correctly locating to write his name. Furthermore, he mispronounced my own surname which is the easiest to pronounce!! There are no visitor badge or passes upon check-in and the front desk receptionist/ security guard will shout out "WHAT ROOM NUMBER ARE YOU CHECKING OUT?" which one visitor was exiting. I requested this front desk receptionist/ security guard to write down the room number on a flyer and upon my exit I submitted this stating "this is the room number that I am checking out." The reception and elevator lobby areas on the first floor appears home- ish with a traditional grandfather clock, sofas, and a family gathering common area. The medical care appears adequate as within mere minutes of my visit (I did not sit down) the staff entered ready to change his hospital night gown and possibly remove any soil on the bed. My friend stated the bed is better. The food is less humanity. "Tina, that is not apple juice- it is a horrible bad tea." I wonder if the patient care technician (PCT) bath my friend... I exited despondent and dispirited as my entire visit was twelve minutes. read more

The doctors are good and many of the nurses and allied health workers are too but the facility is pretty bad (heating and air in my father's room weren't working properly and it's an overall dingy place) and the food is terrible. Plan on bringing your own food if you care about your family member patient. There seemed to be a discrepancy in my father's bill and even though I called and left many messages for the finance office, as well as sent multiple emails, no one got back to me. I feel like they are intentionally ignoring me so that they can keep the money that may have been overcharged. read more

Unfortunately I have several experiences with this facility. And I say unfortunate, but if you have a relative that resident at a nursing home, they aren't in the best of health but this facility does offer some outstanding connections. And one that truly stands out to me is the new social worker Susan Perez. I've had 4 social workers in the two times my father was a resident and Susan has stood out as being the most communicative and efficient person I dealt with in the department. Kudos to her for always following up. I also would like to highlight the staff that I have dealt with in the 7th floor: Veronica, Rebeca, Jackie, Courtney, Alma, Tony in housekeeping and Sway ( spell check ). My brother had a horrible experience at this facility. He called me const asking me to get him out of there. I made several calls to everyone I could think of including the head social worker and the head nurse to no avail. Not one person answered the phone, not even the general number answered. My brother was having trouble breathing and asked for a nebulizer treatment. There was not one nebulizer in the whole facility. He ended up having to go to the hospital. I went to Amsterdam and asked to see him. They flipped though some papers and sent me up to his room. The problem is he wasn't in his room. The nurses said he was in the dining hall. I knew he was in no shape to go to the dining hall. I then found out that he had been admitted to the hospital the night before. When I went back to pick up his things they gave me 2 sealed boxes without a list of what was inside and tried to get me to sign. His very expensive walker was missing along with $120 from his wallet, his cell phone and charger and eyeglasses. They did give me a dinky rolator walker as a loaner but he can't use it because my brother is a big guy. I will be returning it. I made a notation on the release form that I had no idea what was in those boxes and that my brother would be taking inventory before I signed. In addition his bank account has been emptied of tens of thousands of dollars. I will be getting to the bottom of how that happened and hopefully it doesn't lead to Amsterdam. read more

kind staff but so stretched by understaffing they cannot take care of patients as they would like. The facility is not modernized at all and the elevators are seldom all functioning - often 1 of 4 working for 14 floors leading to more stress for patients and staff. It has been very difficult to organize rehab as it is on the ground floor and the rehab floor is on 13. The allotted rehab time is quite short - 20 to 25 minutes 5 days a week - that time includes the time it takes to get to the gym with an escort. It was really hard to coordinate with floor staff as the patient needs to be dressed and in their wheelchair before being transported. Sessions were missed because of the breakdown. The assigned physical therapist left for a 2 week vacation but no replacement therapist was assigned. The doctors, nurses and cna's we supportive and responsive but its a chaotic and ad hoc environment with too little emphasis on the rehab process. I'm sorry to have to move my husband but progress is really slowed by the amount of time on actual rehab. It's a long day with only a half hour, m-f. I'm struggling to have the social worker initiate a transfer as well. read more

I agree with the other recent reviews here. Based on a friend's experience many years ago, we were happy my mother would have rehab at Amsterdam Home. But things have changed, apparently. While much of the staff seems dedicated and hard working, the fact that Amsterdam Home is advertising they are celebrating being the best nursing home in New York contradicts the reality, and rubs me the wrong way. My mother's insurance says she is eligible for many more days, but the staff is pressuring her, and seems to be working with an insurance rep, to change insurance or else she will be paying out of pocket much sooner than her current insurance is telling us. Seems like Amsterdam Home is in some kind of insurance scheme to earn money for their affiliated insurance salesman. In the process they are essentially wanting to push my mother out before she is medically ready. Made my mother with dementia and memory loss sign something she did not understand. The yelp and google reviews are dreadfully woeful and worrisome. IT seems they are under investigation by NY state as a poorly run facility. Some families complained about medication screw ups and legionaries disease! Others complained about awful inedible food and lack of diaper changing. I was recently a patient for 7 weeks at this facility.Note that earlier reviews, a year ago, were better! That bears out the rumors that the new managment lowered the standards and cut corners. Despite the valiant efforts of the nursing staff, too much went wrong, most due to understaffing. When I needed to contact someone in maintenance, housekeeping, recreation, laundry, etc. the nurse had to be the one to make the call. To get to the nurse,I had to go thru my CNA, who were caring and hardworking. but stretched too thin. I might ask my CNA to ask the nurse to contact housekeeping about needing toilet paper, but if another patient fell or the doctor needed them to do something, my request got lost. I was able to speak up and advocate for myself, and I found if I didn't lose my cool when I reminded the CNA, the thing eventually got done. I found almost all of the nurses very competent and conscientious, but they too suffered from too few CNA's to assist them. The PT and OT both were very good. I wasn't happy with my doctor, though our communication improved. As for the food, it looked OK but either had no taste or didn't taste good. However it was fresh, and effort clearly went into it. My appetite was a problem to begin with, so I lost about 10 lbs. There were activities every day, mostly geared to the permanent residents, many of whom had dementia. But students from Juilliard came once/wk, and I heard a really great singer. I think the recreation leader, Candy, worked harder than anyone else in the facility! I will never understand how management companies think penny-wise, pound foolish ever works, but I guess it keeps their Long Island or NJ lawns looking nice and green. Frances D. read more

I've seen a lot of nursing homes, and this one is one of the worst. It's a genuine hellhole. You may never get anyone on the phone, and there's a good chance they won't call you when your loved one falls out of bed and goes to the hospital. The second time our patient went to the hospital, we got a phone message that said 'This is Amsterdam Nursing Home. Okay thank you'. No information, and maybe 10 calls later, we reached someone who (eventually) was able to tell us what was going on. The food is like the slop from a giant bag on Orange is the New Black; our family member needed to eat a lot, and couldn't face it. The food we brought somehow disappeared after a day. Any medication prescribed 'as needed' never happened, as our patient was never checked on. We're not even sure the pain meds were administered regularly! Our patient didn't have a working phone or lights for days upon arrival. More than three days without LIGHTS. My father passed away in April 2020 from Covid while being a resident of Amsterdam Nursing Home (ANH). When I received a call from ANH informing me my Dad was not doing well they mentioned COVID. I asked if they would test him or treat him. The answer was no. I understand as that was the height of COVID cases in the city. When FEMA announced COVID-19 Funeral Assistance, I contacted ANH and was directed to contact the funeral director. The funeral director told me the doctor is the one who needs to amend the death certificate (DC). I first tried to contact the social worker at AHM but calls and emails were not answered. It was nearly impossible to reach ANH. I reached out to the Health Department; John Rudy pointed me to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) on April 1, 2021. When I finally reach Mary Delgado at ANH at the end of April 2021, she said COVID was noted on the DC but the doctor couldn't print his notes on the DC. Later I was told he didn't know how to change the DC. I reached out to the OCME. Robert Pelt from OCME assisted me and was able to reach Dr Bogdanov. On May 6, 2021 Mr Pelt informed me the doctor "would correct and change the cause of death on your father's death certificate to indicate COVID-19. He told me that he's going to call you as well". I never received a call. Once I got the new from Robert Pelt I reached out to Mary who asked me to call her back. When I did, she ghosted me. I had also reached out to NYC Council member Keith Power's office. Franklin L Richards tried to help me as I could not reach Mary. Franklin spoke with Mary in mid October and was told they (ANH) "unable to amend the death certificate mainly because there were other things going on with my dad." FEMA's guidance is such - the death certificate must indicate the death was caused by, may have been caused by, or was likely a result of COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms. The letter may include similar phrasing. The doctor told Robert Pelt from OCME he would change the DC. Then he said he didn't know how. Then the excuse was there was a lot going with my dad when he passed. Give me a break. My dad was put in a SEALED metal box when the funeral home shipped his body to CA (to my gravesite) due to COVID safety concerns. ANH stole a lot of my father's belongings after his death. When they finally opened up in August 2020 we went to pick up the few boxes they had packed up from my dad's room. The boxes were mostly filled with clothes like underwear, socks, shirts. The expensive outerwears were not there. The TV I brought to my Dad's room was not there. His shaver and other things which were worth something - were all missing. I wrote a letter to the President and CEO, James Davis about this as it was disheartening that items were stolen from the dead, items that held precious memories for the family. True to their MO, I did not receive any response. The least they could do was to add "may have been caused by COVID-19". Those 6 words are true to the situation and could help my family. Yet they toyed with me and flip-flop with I don't know-how, yes and no replies. ANH is truly an awful place. As I read the review in the past 1-2 years, I realize how the place has gone completely downhill and I am not the only one suffering. read more

I've been struggling to give this nursing home facility a one or two-star review. Amsterdam Nursing Home was supposed to be the best nursing home in NYC, but there are very serious shortcomings to the facility. Do not be fooled by the nice architecture downstairs. My mother came here for a short-term stay of three weeks. She was brought on a gurney to the 7th floor which was rehab. Over the next few days, she was largely neglected by being left severely constipated, ignored and in severe pain. Furthermore, the alarm didn't work and her room was always cold. Some of the nurses were nice, and some didn't care about their jobs, even though there was a sign to remind them to take care of patients. In addition, her care was not particularly customized. She had a swollen leg and was only showered once a week in a general purpose shower. The nursing aid failed to put on her compression stocking, and when the nurse did put in on there was a scab on the foot. My mother became very depressed. It took her much longer to begin rehab because she was left weak and nauseated for the first week, and finally, when she got to rehab, the care was basic, with one of the rehab nurses spending more time studying cooking books on her phone I was expected that a nurse would regularly walk her. This did not happen, and she was left in bed most nights. Another issue came up when the supervising doctor did not allow her to keep her medical appointments which were planned over several weeks. Only one appointment was permitted, and two denied On the corridors, the nursing aids were supportive except very stretched. Family members have to advocate forcefully for their elderly parents; otherwise, they can be left unattended. The floor where she was located on was not always cleaned properly, and sometimes there was a mid whiff of vomit After a longer than expected recovery, she was finally released. Amsterdam is not suitable for short-term rehab. read more

This place is horrible. My mom had major bed sores while here. . The staff is rude and inattentive and extremely unprofessional. No one never knows anything and YOU WILL NEVER GET AN ANSWER when you call the facility or when you call the floor. The food is horrible . Don't let your love one have to go to the hospital they pack them up without calling the family hey kick them out and put someone else on their room/space. Horrible horrible experience. How nice of this organization for using up my 100 days allocated for my recovery from my insurance for 10 minutes Monday through Friday...never instructing me how to use the stairs. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. I am a physician, a federal whistleblower, and a good son for my elderly mom. I am also a board certified public health physician. So BELIEVE me, there appears to be some sort of change management problem at this facility going on. It is NOT a place for the elderly or for any cognitively impaired rehab or NH stay at this time. It appears that either management or the building or the entire communications system has been undergoing an overhaul recently. While I did not expect 5 star level care at a Manhattan rehab facility, I never expected a nightmare of poor communications during what I hoped would be a routine rehab stay for my mom after she had several falls. From the first night, we were unable to contact my mom via the NH phone system, and for FIVE days we were NOT contacted by any physician. Since my brother is a hospitalist, and I spent a career in long term care, you can imagine our shock. We finally called our city council person, complained to the state, and then threatened legal action before I finally got a call from a Dr. Lansey. This physician appears to be the SOLE provider of actual daily medical care for a very large facility. Dr Lansey is probably a nice fellow and dedicated but probably could use another physician, or PA or two to help him out based on our personal experience. If a physician doesn't contact the family of a new rehab admit, who happens to be a confused elderly woman w/ a falls history, for five days, that's just not right. I'm sure that there are caring people in this facility, and the people running it probably mean well. Perhaps in a year or two they will get their act back together after they finish whatever transition is going on. The SW at the prior hospital had NO idea there was anything challenging or difficult at ANH. SO PLEASE BE AWARE ! AVOID this place for now for your elderly loved one, especially if there is any cognitive issue involved. Their visiting policy is Draconian and restrictive, their phone lines are being updated, the rooms are basic and dingy, and this is not a place for anyone to go who is limited cognitively or who cannot use a smart phone easily. Beware. ADDENDUM: ANH responded to my concerns and did provide good updates and care after I logged several serious complaints. They appear understaffed, with a messed up phone system. If you are patient and very solicitous and can deal with a very difficult visitation system, it's a 2nd tier choice because of the location. They could use covid staff volunteer additions on their nursing floors as the level of understaffing is known and discussed by the staff. Dr. Lancy is reasonable once he contacted me, ELSIE is a lovely nurse, and the SW did try to work with me assiduously. Again, I do not recommend anyone be sent there at this time who has any cognitive issues at all, or is in need of excellent communication and good staff:patient ratios. Several years ago I spent a month and a half here. Everything was fine. Several days ago, my cousin was admitted. For days, morning, afternoon and night I've tried to get his phone number. The operator tries to connect you to the nursing station. On the 26th try a man finally answered this morning. I asked for my cousin's phone number. He said to get it from his partner. I told him it was early and I didn't want to wake her. He said he would get it and call me within a few minutes. Four hours later no call. Next I called administration, Social Work, Human Resources and Administration. None answered. I thought there were some standards for these hell holes. Several friends who tried had the exact experiences. My cousin had been at several homes before and all were decently run. That I recommended him to come here is a shame I'll never live down. Stupidity galore, disorganized, incompetent and dishonest doesn't even begin to describe the horrible experience my mother had in this place. She left here emotionally and physically bruised and traumatized. They told the family she could walk and she couldn't even stand, she could barely sit up. Most nursing rehab's in NYC are crappy, and this one is no different. I have been trying to get in contact with a social worker regarding my client for two weeks now. I have left messages for the SW and the director of social work, and still nothing. I'm in the process of going above both of their heads. Communication is always important, but during times like these, it's critical! I can't go into the details, but please know that they are making it difficult for my client to get the care needed. Wish I could give this place negative stars. My father has been at this facility for the last few months after being in the hospital for rehabilitation. He had many complaints about the lack of staff, supplies never on hand, and terrible food, but managed because he just wanted to get better, so he dealt with the faults. They were releasing him yesterday and called me saying they can't get an ambulette to take him home to Brooklyn, so they were gonna put him in a wheelchair in an Uber. We live on a third floor walk up and he can't walk. He got home and couldn't make it up the stairs. I had to call an ambulance to get him up the stairs because I had no way of getting him into his apartment. After 2 ambulances and about 5 hours, they called the FDNY to come and assist in carrying him up. How can you release someone without making sure they can make it to their door? What were they doing in rehabilitation for so many months where he still can't even walk a few feet? This place is horrendous and I advise you to stay away at all costs. read more

Being sent to Amsterdam Nursing Home for rehab after breaking my right shoulder and left elbow in an accident was like being sent to hell. The staff was totally unresponsive. The food was completely, horribly inedible. The doctor was absolutely scary. When I was admitted for a broken right shoulder and left elbow, they wanted to give me a wheelchair and a diaper, even though I am strong, can walk 5 miles easily, and am definitely not incontinent. I am certain that pneumonia was already present when I was released from Mt Sinai West. Two days after I arrived I was having trouble breathing and I had fever. Since nobody comes when you ring the call bell, I walked out to the desk about a half block from my room and said "I am having trouble breathing. I need to see a doctor." The attendant said "There is no doctor here at night." I said "Then get a nurse. I need help" And she said "If you really couldn't breathe, you wouldn't be standing here talking to me." When I refused to leave, she eventually called a nurse from another floor. She gave me oxygen I needed to be able to breathe and checked on me several times during the night. In the morning the staff physician, Dr Lansky, came in and said, without examining me, or asking me what was wrong, "You need to go to the hospital." I said "Yes!!!! I do and I'm taking all my stuff because I am never coming back here." I called my family to tell them I was being taken back to the hospital and they raced in from New Jersey to meet me at Mt Sinai West. I was admitted with pneumonia and a partially collapsed lung and spent the next 8 days recovering. After that I went to Village Care Rehab on Houston St. Compared to the hell hole Amsterdam House it was like a resort. NEVER let anyone you care about be sent to Amsterdam House. read more
