He was always treated with the utmost respect and received exceptional care. Everyone from the staff at the reception desk to the office staff to the nursing staff and personal care staff were all wonderful to him and our entire family. In fact we believe that living at the Brandywine in Little Neck extend our Dad's life probably by years. They treated my mom with respect, love, and good humor. The place is clean, has lovely furnishings and decorations (which my mom always liked!), and a good variety of different places for seniors to visit, sit, and walk. There were always fun events planned for the seniors, including parties, concerts, crafts, movies, Bingo, lectures, and more. I loved receiving a daily email from the facility with information about the menu and events so I could remind mom about fun things to do. As the years progressed, mom had increasingly challenging health issues, but the folks at Brandywine scaled up their support and took such good care of her. I was able to go to work every day knowing that she was in good hands. And I also feel that Brandywine didn't just care for Mom, but they were also so supportive of our family at each stage of my Mom's decline - they were kind, caring, knowledgeable, and served as thoughtful partners in my caregiving. I am especially appreciative of Asif in the Wellness Center, Janet in Customer Care, Lisa (one of the caregivers), Jeremy at the front desk (who put up with my constant phone calls!), Toni in the business office, and everyone else whose names I missed. Each time I drive past Brandywine I miss mom, but I am thankful that she was able to spend her final years of life in the care of such wonderful people. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a caring community for their loved one.

Had to ask the Hospice Aides that were coming twice a week for 1 1/2hrs each day not to comeback they were too rough in cleaning my wife. Affirmed aides were so gently and caring I was amazed at how they worked. Can't say enough about the difference in caring at a special and most needed time.

My brother often expressed how attentive the staff were, and how he enjoyed his time there. However, my brother needed another level of care, and the staff there, particularly the social worker Ms. Thomas was instrumental in taking the time to help my brother transition to another facility. This meant so much to him and to me who live out-of-state, to know that in the busyness of what all the staff has to go through on a regular basis, that he was treated with human dignity and respect, and that he truly mattered. But the location and the building are not the issue it is the people that work there. The staff are rude, only the one in charge of the Health Department was not rude to me. I was only one step away from starting the position when suddenly I was told that they just handed the job over to someone else. After missing days of work in order to fulfill the requirements that were needed to begin working, I get met with that response. This was disappointing to me after being made certain that I would get this position. There were a lot of things about the process that were unclear and they had me going back and forth to the doctors office, back and forth with the references. Communication was not clear. I did my best to be respectful and on top of everything but they apparently do not care as much about doing their jobs. I have been told that the food is poor there. Some of the staff look like they do not want to be there and do not engage the way a real person working this field should be. I am so disappointed but this. My voice is going to be heard and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL. Unless they change certain people who work there there.

Before continuing to make the phone calls needed to address my father's death, I had to write to…read morepraise the assisted living/memory care facility where he lived for a year. The Sunrise of East Meadow became an extended family to us. The care provided to my father was excellent and they also notified me of any changes in his condition, or medication needed. The staff was compassionate and they all seemed happy to help. This was an experience unlike my father's prior assisted living facility, which looked more upscale and provided better entertainment, but the care was really lacking. At Sunrise, everyone was kind and responsive, from the aides to the nursing staff to the Directors. I am so very grateful to them.

Most people probably vaguely plan to pass away peacefully at home, perhaps surrounded by loved ones. But this isn't possible sometimes. For such times, an inpatient hospice facility can handle end-of-life transitions peacefully and respectfully -- for the most part. Calvary Hospital is one of the larger hospice providers in the New York City area. ArchCare operates the 18-room Dawn Greene Hospice under the banner of Calvary Hospital, at the Mary Manning Walsh Home, a nursing home in the Upper East Side. The Hospice is on the 15th Floor. Patients may expect to suffer a few frustrations: - Patient records may not transfer smoothly from previous healthcare providers. - The food is not good. The hot water could be a little hotter. - Patients may be discouraged by staff from using the in-room bathrooms, and asked instead to use underpads or bedside commodes. - Patients may be discouraged by staff from leaving their beds. - Some weekend staff seem less responsive and responsible than most weekday staff. Many of these limitations are understandable. Hospices are designed, staffed, and funded for palliative care; not emergency care, not curative care, not assisted living. That said, staff could be better trained in wound care. The duration of a patient's stay at a hospice may be anyone's guess. The balancing act between the incredible resilience and tragic frailty of the human condition can be unknowable. The one surprise of our experience here was that they asked us to remove our loved one on the same day as death. This hospice, as with most, apparently does not have a morgue, and must comply with health mandates. Do have concrete plans for a funeral home or mortuary as your loved one enters a hospice. Visitor Logistics: - The best way to reach Dawn Greene Hospice is via mass transit, as on-street parking is scarce and nearby parking garages are expensive. However, parking websites / apps may provide coupons for nearby parking garages. - Consider making restaurant reservations or using Yelp's Waitlist feature early if there is a possibility of eating dinner in the area -- the best nearby restaurants do fill up early. - Visitor check-in / check-out is handled by the nursing home. - There is VPN-friendly Wi-Fi. Ask for the password at the front desk. - A patient shower room by Elevator Bank A serves as a makeshift visitor bathroom. (Each patient room has its own bathroom, but with a non-lockable door.) - The Family Lounge is a comfortable room, with a television, circular conference table, individual lounge-style chairs, a loveseat sofa (i.e., seats two), a refrigerator with freezer, a microwave, a K-cup coffee / tea maker, and a cold water and ice dispenser. Weekly meal menus for patients are posted here, as is the meal delivery schedule. - As a reminder, items placed in the refrigerator / freezer must be labeled. - During the Covid-19 quarantine, visitors in the Family Lounge are asked to keep their masks on and stay 6 feet apart. - There are no accommodations for visitors who wish the spend the night with their loved ones, other than the cushioned in-room lounge chair and whatever footrest can be found. This is typical of most inpatient facilities. Overall: Despite some misgivings, Dawn Greene Hospice does a good job overall in providing an important service that meets most patient, family, and visitor needs. We don't live in a perfect world; better treatment would require significantly greater systemic investment, or deeper pockets for private nursing services. I am grateful that this hospice made the last days of our loved one more comfortable than they would have otherwise been.

I received a call 30 minutes before my mother passed away. I'd been given no warning that she was…read moreso close to passing -- in fact, just three days before I was told it could be "weeks" and the day before I was told absolutely nothing different. I did not have enough time to get there and she died with no family or friends to hold her hand. 30 minutes after they called, she was dead. Either they did not check on her or were so unfamiliar with the signs of death that they did not know she was dying until it was too late. I trusted the Dawn Greene hospice. That was a mistake.
