The tour itself was 75 minutes long, and our tour guide used the whole time. We got to town a few minutes early and where the trolley tour started had a few coffee shops in the blocks around it. The trolley itself is a bit loud but our guide was easy to hear. We visited on a chilly day, and the trolley had the heat going. The seating is wooden benches so not the comfiest ride but was fine for 75 minutes.

This wasn't just another clash of armies -- it was one of the most lopsided assaults of the war, a grim December 1862 where bravery collided head-on with impossible odds. The Visitor Center does a fine job grounding you in the context: Burnside's plan to cross the Rappahannock, the delays with pontoon bridges, and how those hours gave Lee's men the time to dig in. The short film is worth it -- it sets the stage for why this battle became a symbol of both heroism and futility. Walking the field, I couldn't help but note how the terrain dictated the slaughter. The Union army had to charge over nearly half a mile of open plain, with no cover, directly into Confederate firepower. The stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights remains chilling in its simplicity -- a farmer's wall turned fortress. It's said that a single Confederate line repulsed wave after wave of bluecoats, and when you stand behind that wall, you understand how. The driving tour expands the picture. Slaughter Pen Farm, preserved by the American Battlefield Trust, gives you the only full Union attack route still intact. It's haunting to trace those footsteps -- knowing thousands never made it across. Other stops, like Lee's Hill, give you the vantage point the Confederate commander had, surveying the field with grim confidence. It's not all glory -- part of Fredericksburg's story is loss and futility. More Union soldiers fell here in a single day than in many entire campaigns. But it's also where Richard Kirkland, the "Angel of Marye's Heights," earned his legend by bringing water to dying Union soldiers, showing compassion amidst carnage. Yes, the modern world has pressed in -- houses and traffic surround pieces of the field -- but enough remains to feel the weight of what happened here. Preservation efforts have fought hard to keep key ground from disappearing, and walking it today is a testament to both the men who fought and those who saved the land. Called today and they said my reservation was cancelled. Ok. Fine. Rebook flight. Costs me more plus travel insurance again. This time I call to confirm and they say that because it's a one way flight, I have to go into the store to book. What?!? They said to prevent fraud. But why did the website let me book? Why did it say to call the number? Why was I not told the first time I called that I had to go in to book? Rush to the store, check in and wait.... And wait. Check Delta to see what the price is directly from them. Same price. So while waiting I call the travel insurance company to see if I can cancel both flight insurance policies. They said yes! So I did that and walked out of the store. Still no one checking on me. So tonight I'm booking the flight through Delta. Just not sure what to think.... Again, never had a problem before, but some of these policies plus not getting served has made me a bit concerned.

In one of our rooms, the shower spout came off while my daughter was in the shower. There was no immediate accommodation offered or meaningful attempt to rectify the situation. In the other room, the bedding was torn and tattered. We didn't even bother reporting it that night because it was late, and we had an early start the next morning. Before departing, we explained everything in detail and were promised a follow-up call. Instead, we eventually received an email from the assistant manager that showed no accountability or acknowledgment of what had happened, simply stating: "I understand that you requested to speak with a manager. Please let me know how I can assist you, and I will be happy to help." I requested to speak directly with the General Manager, who was copied on the email, but seven days later there has still been no response. Their proposed resolution was 10,000 points. They can keep the points -- what I wanted was accountability, professionalism, and a partial refund. Very disappointing customer service and an unacceptable handling of serious concerns.

9/4/20 On the way to the beach or on the way back home, this…read morerest stop is one of many we went to.   The rest stops have gotten cleaner than they have in the past. This statement is up for debate based on one's own experiences, but from what I remember,  sitting on the toilets wasn't a thing you wanted to do. In my case the bathroom  was nearly spotless.  There was still urine on the floor by some urinals,  but a morjority for the urinals were good. Why, because of the target mats in the urinals. As a male we pride ourselves hitting targets at a great distance,  but can't seem to hot a target a few inches in front of us....unless some of us are deliberately aiming for the floor. Anyhow, these floor mats are designed for three reasons I can think of. 1. Odor Protection and Order Control:   The smell of "Urine may smell like ammonia when it becomes concentrated with waste products. A variety of conditions can cause waste products to build up in urine, such as bladder stones, dehydration, and urinary tract infections. In most cases, urine that smells like ammonia can be treated with fluids or antibiotic medications. "https://www.healthline.com/health/urine-smells-like-ammonia#bottom-line The protection part is so your nose and tastebuds are not highly offended by the obnoxious/horrid  stink urine can provide a wide open space or in the narrow corridors of a bathroom. 2. Targeting: Since the janitor/cleaner of the bath area has experienced the small to large amounts of urine on the ground, these newer models of splash guard mats have worked wonders.  The holes in these mats act as targets so males will know where to aim. Granted there were the sides of the inner walls to the urinals to aim for, but there is a problem with that.  I will get to that later on.  With these mats in place, the smell if urine can't not offend the nose or tastebuds of the person draining the lizard...unless the mats need to be replaced.   Indeed these targets will block pee from firing back at the shooter...how you ask?...well this leads to number #3 3. Splash Guard Protection: This is the most important aspect of the piss on mats. The target holes and little plastic bristles act as splash guards and stop the pee from splashing back on one's own privates, but most importantly one's own pants.  That's right, little microscope droplets of pee flying back onto your pants...but what it gets worse.  If you don't have these splash guards, the pee droplets can be bigger. The term "you can't take it with" does not apply if you do not have a splash guard mat.  Not even aiming for the insides of the walls will keep you 100% safe.  Don't aim for the wall in front of you unless there is a slash guard mat there. Otherwise you get the tiny golden rain drops backatcha and comingatcha.  So if your going for the wiggle, shaking and dancing, the last few drops are going to stay/stain your pants, unless you grab a tissue ( or paper towel) say bless you. The toilet  area was clean from what I saw. No worries about what Eddie Kaye Thomas aka Shitbreak had to go through.   The lobby area was immaculately clean and most people were in and out of that place, but all were wearing masks because of The Coronavirus Outbreak.    The snake machine was fully stock, but we did not get any food from the machine this time. Mainly, because the food was not what my wife wanted. Upon leaving this rest stop, I remember how I use to take my dog out here so she could handle her business and stretch her legs. She was the family's dog, but some how became my dog. She made the trip to Geneva Switzerland,  but never made it back to the United States.  I still miss my Lady Fox.   Anyhow, there are two other stops I normally would make and they are Waffle Houses, but our last experience with them was good and bad.     Still this rest stop served its purpose even though the customer service section was closed. We will return at some point. Whenever that is.
