I can see why it's useful in an even space. It has turned more event space and mildly used for a train stop. If you need bells and whistles for your Amtrak travels needs you may want to utilize the Staples Mill station. But, if you familiar with Amtrak travel and this station is convenient for you, the. We attended the Richmond Wine, Whiskey, and Chocolate Festival at the Main Street Station. I thought this was the perfect venue! Main Street Station is so lovely. The only difficulty was all the construction when finding the bathroom. The plus side is the construction to make it even more beautiful. The architecture is stunning as you walk up to the building and the inside does not disappoint with the high ceilings and large windows to gaze out into the city!! read more

The Main Street station is both beautiful and awful. The building is historic and appears to have been renovated. It is beautiful and takes you back to a different period. The awful is that there are no services - it is a dead zone. If you arrive early in the morning you are out of luck. I see great potential but it has not yet been made for prime time which is unfortunate. read more

Main Street Station is host to various venues for organizations around town. I've attended beer festivals, a cocktail festival, and fundraisers, such as Fetch a Cure, at the station. I've also caught trains here, though I live closer to Staples Mill and prefer that station. It's a gorgeous station steeped in history, though sometimes it can get really hot in the glass-enclosed areas even with a/c on. I also prefer the downstairs venue-area bathrooms to the station bathrooms. read more

Although the station is beautiful is useless,there is no Amtrak assistance nor caffès is more of a museum community center.While I had a lay over they had rented the place to a wedding even,it was so loud you had to go outside in the balcony.Also they close very early,guards are rude and will not assist you in any other way,they are not Amtrak employees.Be prepared to walk far to get coffee while waiting for you next train connection.As I said beautiful and charming location but Amtrak is non present here except for a Amtrak ticket printout kiosk,don't bother asking the security guards anything they go out of their way to make you feel uncomfortable and that is not a station but their community center and they are not Amtrak employees. read more

The "Gateway To Richmond" (Robert Winthrop, Architectural Historian). Commissioned for construction in 1900 by the City and Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) and in November 1901 the first train arrives. It remained a vital transportation and commerce center of Richmond until 1975. The following years '75-'93, the Station endured a six-alarm fire in 1983, a mix of owners with intended uses, and a threat of demolition to clear way, along side I-95, in a failed attempt to build a shopping mall. In 2000, the Station was back in Cities possession from the State of Virginia. Following extensive renovations and ongoing projects the Station officially reopened in 2008 as the the "Cities Reborn Gateway to Richmond." Which, brings me to my experience in 2019. I arrive by an overnight Amtrak from Connecticut in the early morning. Still groggy and needing to find a place catch some additional rest, despite the Grand Hall stopped us in our Tracks (no pun, well, maybe). The magnificent vaulted ceilings, tile motif, with sets of tracks on either side of the long, rebuilt, Train Shed. The eye catching facility renovated to serve once again as Transportation Hub, Civic Center, Offices, Museum, and elegant Banquet Hall. Truly a feast for overtired eyes like ours and if you're a history buff this Grand Old Station is along with the remainder of Richmond is a destination to behold. read more

I've been a guest twice now to events and I am so impressed. The first was a corporate holiday party with several hundred guests and the second was a wedding of about 75 people. The venue is enormous and can work for both huge crowds and intimate gatherings. Even without much decoration it is grand and beautiful; I absolutely love the exposed brick, the soaring ceilings, and classic design details. The venue is ADA accessible and has ample, inexpensive parking even though it is in the heart of downtown. read more

It's pretty neat! The Clock Tower as it's known was built in 1901 and was the primary train station in Richmond for decades until a horrible flood in the '70s and a fire in the '80s sidelined it. Service was restored earlier this century, albeit with fewer trains. The heavy lifting these days is done by the Staples Mill Station in suburban Henrico County, which may offer more trains but a fraction of the character of Main Street Station. read more

Great place to bring friends or family to check out for free and then have a meal at any one of the many area restaurants that are near by. Check out the unique preserved architecture and enjoy the history of Richmond. The city has done a fantastic job in restoration and finding additional use for this space. There is a nice smallish art gallery on the lower level and there are some fantastic views of the city. Plenty of free parking across the street. There is limited Amtrak service here but most of it runs from the Staples Mill Station just North of the City. read more

If you are planning to board the train here, and don't have a ticket, see my update below. Caught the Amtrak train here. Beautiful station. The train platforms are under construction/renovation, which made boarding a little odd. The doors were not unlocked until the train arrived. So be there on time and ready to go! But other than that, I would recommend showing up early and enjoy the building a little bit. Beautiful architecture. It appears the very large indoor space is also used for events. It's pretty? That's all I got. The architecture and art is gorgeous, but this station is basic. No air conditioning, no food/drink options, limited seating, no escalators, no ramps. It's really not conducive for travelling with suitcases. It's convenient to downtown Richmond, but I wouldn't plan to spend much time here. If you get here 15 minutes before your train, that'd be fine. read more

The interior and exterior of the Main Street Station was beyond words. It is a magnificent structure. Despite being so hot outside, it remained cool inside. Stepped inside the first level with guards manning the desk. Walked in a little further and there was a small art gallery. Took the lift to the next level up and it was an even prettier sight. Hardly anyone there - came on a Friday morning. I didn't do any research before coming to this place. When I came here, I thought what a nice venue for a wedding reception. And checked the website, it actually can be booked for events and weddings. That's how pretty it is inside. There are several lounges there to sit and relax in. It loses one start because of location. In no fault of it's own, the toll bridge just ruins the sight. I almost didn't feel safe outside when taking a photo outside. Parked in public parking with fee payable through the passport app. read more

I went here because I wanted to see the building connected to the clock tower you can't help but see when driving I-95 North in Richmond. Very convenient parking area located under I-95 and between the train bridges (feels a little odd to know a major interstate is above you.) Lovely architecture. You can walk around the area at your leisure - I understand not too many trains actually stop there. Can't say anything about how useful it is as a train station, I'll let the local weigh in on that. read more

I stopped in while I walked down to Kulture and I wasn't sure what to expect. The one thing that Impressed me was seeing the line where Camile dropped her rains, because I visited while Hurricane Michael had just gone through the previous day. Oh Main Street Station, how I adore thee. Too bad I live closer to the Staples Mill Road station. If I didn't, I'd be all up in Main Street Station every time I had to catch a train. It is sexy in the most historic way. I see why this is a hot spot for RVA weddings and other events. It truly is the perfect backdrop for a magical evening. It has a touch of class that takes it over the top! I can definitely see myself having a gorgeous wedding here fit for a Duchess (Move over Kate!) someday. So, one thing I did notice is that I didn't see anywhere to purchase food or drinks. Someone did have food delivered to the station while I was there (that's one way to do it!). That's literally the only improvement that I can think of. Parking is super easy with it being right across the street, it's right off the highway so it's very easy to get to. Not to mention this place is a staple in the RVA Skyline so just being in there makes you feel über Richmond-y. Yep, Main Street Station gets the Lauri stamp of approval! read more

I am in love with the architectural details of this building. It's just so beautiful and there's something about the marble interior and the ceiling design that just puts me in a good mood. Not to mention, it almost feels as though you've stepped back in time when you walk up the stairs. I can't think of a more tranquil place to wait for a train. The seating area is beautiful, with rich brown couches, setees with nailhead details, and numerous wrought iron tables and chairs. All that's missing is a throwback style café. In terms of transportation function, there aren't a ton of trains that pass through this station. In fact, there's not even a staffed ticket counter; just an electronic ticket machine. It's not as easy to depart from as Staples Mill, but it's so much more appealing. If you have the option, I definitely recommend Main Street Station for your train travels. read more

The clock tower on Main Street Station has been a signature element of the Richmond skyline for over a century. This is one of the coolest old train stations, and I wish Amtrak and the city would keep their promises to finish developing the venue and adding additional services. Only a few trains come through here from D.C., Boston, and Newport News so it's not great for local commuters. Plus there isn't even an Amtrak office here...just a ticket machine. You can take the train to Colonial Williamsburg from here, but aside from that, for most travel you have to hike out to the Staples Mill station. read more

This station very old. Very helpful staff help me on and off the train. There only ticket machines to get your tickets. Be shore you get you ticket online and way ahead. Go to google map and get your way to your location. They may put you on a ride to jack up the fair. Be shore if you don't know Richmond us your yelp. And place take some pictures. Thank you. I came into this station from staples mill rd station for a wedding. It was kind of confusing. I got into staples mill rd at 430am yet had to wait until 940am to board the train to main st station. All for a 30 min train ride. But as far as the station goes it is beautiful. Like a museum. Tons of displays and super plush and comfy furniture. I actually fell asleep on one of the couchs when I arrived. The guard came into change the trash and accidentally woke me up. Told me to stay as long as I wanted. On the way home my train was delayed be about 40 min. But there was great communication from the guard and it is def not a bad place to be delayed. read more

First time using this station to get to NJ and honestly I had very mixed feelings about it. I mean the structure of the station is simply beautiful. Marble floors, nicely buffed and maintained. The station isn't that big, so it's very easy to navigate yourself around. The tracks are all upstairs and there aren't a lot of tracks to get confused on which one to board. Once you walk upstairs, there is also a dry erase board with all the trains with their number and time written on it. Super easy to figure out which platform to use. The board and staff upstairs will also notify if there have been any delays to the trains. The only thing I really didn't like were the customer service personnel working there. Like off the bat I got the impression they hated their jobs and didn't want to be there. For example, when I walked through the main entrance, I went to the help desk to ask where to go since I was new and running late, so I didn't have time to walk around and figure out the place. Instead I decided to walk up to the help desk to ask where my platform is and if she can direct me. Instead of letting me finish my sentence, she cuts me off and just points to the board next to her and says go read the board in an irritated voice. I was taken back at how useless this person was. What's the point of having a personal help desk? Anyways besides the unfriendliness of the staff, this station was pretty elegant. read more

The station is beautiful and historic looking from the outside. The inside is nice. There are comfortable couches and chairs and it seems like a quiet place. Probably one of the less busy stations I have ever been in. However the women working the desk was having a conversation with someone on speaker phone the whole time. Like I get it, you arn't doing much but sitting behind a desk, we're all guilty of personal calls at work. But this was a long phone call with a man on speaker phone that really ruined that atmosphere of what would have been a nice relaxing station. read more

This station is beautiful -- Italianate (I think) with a really neat old world train canopy -- not a dumpy platform like DC's Union Station or Penn Station, but a really attractive one like in Paris or something. It's also very convenient, right downtown and a short walk from Shockhoe Bottom. Really nice place, will definitely take the train down. It's also charmingly low-tech, no big boards or anything like that, just announcements and a white board. They don't have wifi but you can connect to the city's municipal wifi, COR-Guest. read more

It's very open to the public. The bathrooms are small yet very clean! That's a HUGE deal. That can't be ignored. When people are traveling, they need a sense of comfort in something and for that to include the bathroom, that makes it a trip worth being away from home. Other than that, it's a decent experience. If you're waiting to pick up family and friends, parking for the 1st hour is free, so there's that. read more

I took a trip to Richmond from DC and traveled via train. The station is great in terms of ambience and architecture. There are photographs and displays inside to give you a sense of what it used to be. I saw someone getting some bridal photos taken and I can understand why -- the architecture is interesting and unique. There is a lot of room and comfortable furniture. There's also a balcony area so you can look out onto Main Street. The building looks great from outside as well. It's also near some parts of the Slave Trail if you're interested in learning more about history. In terms of actual travel, my train back to DC was late and it took forever to get to Staples Mill Rd. It doesn't seem like too many trains stop at the Main Street Station -- it seems like more tend to go to Staples Mill Rd. That said, if you're coming to see Richmond, I did find the Main Street Station to be convenient and as described above, it is beautiful. read more

Excellent location. Local bus route 6 stops right in front of the station, and this is a main route. A few blocks walk up Main Street at 14th is a local bus stop for several more routes. Cab fare reasonable with downtown. Beautiful station. The main problem is that only four trains a day serve Main Street Station, and those are all regional trains from Newport News to Boston. Trains to southern points do not stop at Main Street Station. They do stop at Staples Mill Station, the "main" Richmond Station. Yes, there is a rail line passing Main Street to the south, but it's freight-only. Passenger trains use the line a few miles West. The tracks Amtrak uses actually go East and North. Across from the Station, the track turns to go to Newport News. No Amtrak office. Only a QuikTrak vending machine and two payphones. There are station attendants, but they don't work for Amtrak. The main reason to use this station over Staples Mill is it's easier to get to from downtown, especially on local buses. Staples Mill is located way out in Henrico County. Only one local bus serves it, hourly 7am-6pm weekday, no weekend service. Very inconvenient location if you're not driving or having someone pick you up/drop you off. Trains schedules: Very reasonable. Northbound trains arrive/depart at 10:29 am and 6:05 pm. Southbound trains arrive and depart at around the same time. read more

I'm glad Main Street Station is there - I live in Shockoe Bottom, and being able to walk to a train that'll get me to DC and points beyond is a huge benefit. The waiting facilities are very comfortable - there are tables and a number of comfortable couches in the station. There are vending machines on site, and there are restaurants in the immediate vicinity if you need other food. There are two main downsides to this train station. Any trip to points north will involve traveling over track in atrocious condition, and the train will trundle along at 10 MPH en route to Staples Mill Station. Suffice to say that you could drive the distance between the stations much more quickly, and if If I did not live within walking distance of Main Street, I would probably leave from Staples Mill every time just to avoid this part of the trip. The second is that they frequently rent out the train station for other events. This can be a major hassle when arriving on a train; I came back one night in April and was rudely told by attendants that I needed to leave the building immediately so as not to disturb the fundraiser that was happening. Of course, this is a train station; it's not uncommon for passengers to get off and want to use the facilities. Amtrak and station management should plan events around the train schedule to ensure passengers have full access to the amenities of the station whenever a train departs or arrives. read more
