A great station that offers all the bells and whistles needed for your Amtrak travel needs. Generally there are attendants and crew available to help. There is a snack bar inside. But, if you plan ahead you can totally pick up some food. They recently went through an update maybe 1-2 years ago. But, my brain calendar could totally be off. I don't know what I did yesterday. Joking. But, the updates are great. Clean and crisp. There is a good amount of seating as well. This station can and will get crowded so plan accordingly. read more

One of my favorite things about being back home in Richmond is the ease of traveling up and down the East Coast, and the Amtrak Staples Mill station is always my go-to. It's usually clean--even if it's often crowded--and there's overnight parking available if you need it (though I typically just get dropped off). On this particular trip, my mom dropped me off about 10 minutes before departure, and it was smooth sailing from there. The trains are consistently timely, which I really appreciate when I'm doing quick trips to places like D.C. or Baltimore. The staff is always pleasant enough--clear with directions, helping folks find the right boarding areas, and making announcements that actually help you stay on track (pun intended, LOL). It's convenient. It's cost-effective. It's reliable. And honestly, that's all I need when I'm on the move. Richmond to anywhere up the coast just makes sense from Staples Mill. read more

I took the train to attend my coworker's retirement party in Jersey City, NJ. This was my first time taking the train - I've always just dropped off the hubbie or picked up a friend from here but didn't take the train until this year! Buying ticket online was easy and I got a morning one so I was able to leave my car overnight to attend the party. I really enjoyed the fact that on the train, I could just log in to my hot-spot to work. Highly recommend getting a dual screen if you need to work. Anyways, my outlet wasnt working so I had to move my postitio to the other side of the train to plug my laptop back in once it was getting close to losing power. I really enjoyed the ease of being able to go on the train instead of the airport and not bad from a first time experience. Just make sure you stay alert to when you're about to get off. **fast forward** to on our way back to RVA, the train was slightly delayed, then the business cart lost air so the heat started blasting and it became like a sauna....and we didn't get back until an hour past the time we were orignally suppose to be home. I wouldn't mind giving this a try again, especially if it's not for work. This wasn't too bad and I understand that things happen. read more

This is the busiest Amtrak station in Virginia. I'm speaking from experience and from actual facts. It's always crowded when I come here. I think it would benefit from a facelift, but it's still functional. I've taken multiple trains to NoVA and DC from this location. I've also gone to Philly from here too. The trains I've taken are usually comfortable and clean. My favorite part about this stop is the Richmond train mural. It's very charming. This station has functional bathrooms, vending machines, and booth seats. It tends to be the cheapest and quickest option for the trips I make. The train tickets to NoVA or DC are especially amazing. I love how low the prices can be. Anything to avoid traffic on 95 is a plus for me. Parking is never an issue here, there are soooo many spots in their parking lot. I'm grateful we have this station, but I wish there was more love put into it, especially since it's the busiest one in VA. read more

The RVR station is always pretty crowded, but it's a no frills location. They recently renovated, which in my opinion just meant updated seating. There is a small deli inside, but I typically opt for getting food in the surrounding area to bring on the train. Not sure how much parking is these days, and I usually get a ride to the station. But there is a pretty big parking lot for those who opt overnight parking. read more

For the size of the area, I thought this was a decent train station. For instance, I would not compare this train station to the likes of a place like NYCs Penn Station (or whatever it's called nowadays) or DC's Union Station with their wide array of amenities, but this station will get you where you need to go. The station seems more like a drop off and pick up type of station. In other words, travelers are not really lounging around the station like in larger cities. While the station is on the smaller side, it has all that most would need for a no frills experience while waiting an hour or so for the train - decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating, clean restrooms, a small concession stand, seats with electrical sockets, and decent wifi. In terms of food options, there are a couple of fast food spots (e.g.,McDs, Captain Ds, and couple of Mexican restaurants) within walking distance from the station. My experience with the staff was pretty nice. I inquired to see if I could change my ticket for an earlier train, and the ticket agent looked up every possibility..all without an attitude. read more

Sorry I don't have pics, but I'll add some in time! This station doesn't deserve the low rating as of today. Parking is fine, well lit, well signed, and seemingly plentiful. The drop off area is tight, but as long as people are conscientious, no problem. Restrooms are clean, the ticket people are friendly, there are vending machines for off hours and a little "shop" for most hours of the day. Getting on the train is a bit awkward because you have to queue up and wait to be called to board, and people just don't know how to queue sometimes; please don't blame the station!! Richmond is a great small city. This station has 20 departures daily. The downtown stop has about 6, so this is the station of choice. I'd say it's punching up and doing a nice job doing so. read more

All A-Bored!! Now that I've been to several other Amtrak stations, the one here in Richmond seems ho-hum pitiful. I'm sorry, but it's outdated and small. The seating is old and uncomfortable. This train station needs a facelift! It could be really cute with some new fixtures and better seats. The parking kiosk is convenient and engine-eous as you can add more time from your phone. The parking lot is bigger so that's a plus. It could use some railroad décor, like the station in Ashland (which is small but interesting and appealing). The coffee cart has a few basic choices of hot foods for passengers to chew-chew, but the selection is not impressive. There was only one person tending the window when we were there last and the lines were long. C'mon RVA, Get on track! This station needs an overhaul. The train itself was clean and the seats were newly renovated. The train is still my favorite way to travel, even though I had to blow off some steam! ;-) read more

I visited this station recently to retrieve a friend visiting me from out of town. Otherwise I had just seen it from the train as I headed to and from Main Street on other trips. From the train, it doesn't look like much. But from the street side, they have a huge parking lot and even a queue where you sit in your car and wait for whomever you're picking up. Nice! Unless I move from my current downtown location, Main Street will still continue to be more convenient for me...but I wouldn't mind leaving from Staples Mill, either. It also had a loud intercom that announced trains as they arrived and departed. Pretty nice station from what I saw. read more

This Amtrak Station is better than most. It has a large, lighted and secure pay parking lot. It has attended ticket window. Most stations have only a kiosk. It has clean bathrooms. It has a covered area for drop-off and pick-up. It has a snack bar, with hot food and beverage options. There are several vending machines with snacks and beverages near the bathrooms. It has a HDTV tuned to the news station. It has a large monitor that indicates train numbers, destinations and current status. In addition, there is a PA system that announces arrivals and departures for those who might be hearing impaired. There are attendants to help those in need with their bags. This location supplements the downtown Richmond Main location and offers more frequent service to the North & South. They also sell large boxes such as bicycle transport boxes if needed. Overall, the service & amenities offered here are well about the general & usual services for the majority of Amtrak stations I've used & visited in the North East & South East. read more

My first train ride. Very nice. The staff and passengers were very helpful to this "train ride newbie". The trains and stations were very clean and comfortable. The stations I visited were not fancy at all, but got the job done. The highlight for me was how easy train travel is compared to flying. Much nicer and less hassle. A small Amtrak station. The seating layout is awful and there aren't enough train schedule screens to have one visible from every seat. The staff is very good with making sure everyone gets out to their train and know where to go to get on the proper car. So even if you can't see the train schedule screen, the staff will make sure you don't miss your train. I made the mistake of arriving hungry. There is a snack stand, but I was hoping to be able to get something more filling than snacks. I prefer the bigger Amtrak stations. read more

Wow do not believe what Amtrak advertises online. My family and I took the train to Orlando. For the first 4 hours we were held hostage on the train by the employees. The train was supposed to leave at 10:30 and did not leave till 2. First they turned the air conditioning off for the first 2 hours. They said there was a car stuck on the tracks and we remained locked up on the train without a way to get out. Passengers were going from one end of the train to the other but they could not find any personnel. They started getting upset and looking for ways to get off the train such as doors and windows and they were successful. If I would have known this I would never have suggested a train ride. Coming back from Orlando we plan to fly because there is no way we can go through this again. read more

Amtrak station on the line that comes up from Savannah and Charleston SC and then on from here to Washington DC and intersects with the line that goes from Virginia Beach through Richmond to Charleston WV and points west, Staples Mill Road is a convenient stop for us to pick up my niece and nephew from North Carolina rather than drive all the way down to pick them up. Or to have them wait here for a couple of hours for the connection. Not much for services here. A coffee and snack stand, bathrooms and waiting area, If you're here on a long layover, I'd recommend crossing the parking lot to the McDonald's. At least *they* have free wifi. Parking is free for the first three hours, otherwise there is an automated machine for making payments. read more

The last time I was there was almost 20 years ago. And it looks EXACTLY the same. Not much to be desired for but it fulfills its purpose. However, I must admit that when I got to the newer one down in Norfolk, it was refreshing to see gray and metal and new carpet versus the ugly drab brown colored tiles at Staples Mill. Thankfully it wasn't too cold, so I chose to sit outside the entire time to wait for the train. read more

The parking is very easy with hundreds of spots. The train station is old and needs some updating. There is a "snack bar", but I would not recommend it unless you want a candy bar, soda or chips. It is a shame that this station is in such a state. The Main Street station is very nice; however, fewer trains stop there. read more

They told everybody who is taking a train to stay in the room and everybody else waiting for their rides had to go outside, its freezing cold and thats just messed up . Why cant you have everybody leave when the last train comes at least , instead of having laying customers freezing outside your doors in the cold. read more

Welp folks, if you're looking for the bottleneck on the Amtrak east coast line, you'll find it here in Staple-Mills station. Station is small but serviceable with parking and staff is nice enough but DEAR LORD there is literally nothing about this place, either personnel wise or operations wise that would get a train onto a track and either boarded or y boarded in time to leave. Since they only use ONE TRACK and everything depends upon the whims of the staff trains regularly have to wait to pull in and out. Hopefully someone will overhaul Amtraks operations and make it a real, viable method of travel the way it could be!!! read more

Small AmTrak station. Certainly not posh. And I wish they could make the parking lot a tad easier to get in/out of. But taking the train to DC beats I-95 any day of the week! If leaving your car here, there is a pay-to-park machine that you pay without having to walk back to your car to leave a receipt (just enter your license plate number)! The system will text you a reminder before your paid parking expires and let you extend it by phone if needed. Very convenient if you end up getting delayed! read more

This was the worst Amtrack station I've been to! Okay, it's one of six I've been to and it was resoundingly adequate and what are you going to do: you want to take the train, you gotta go to the station. The Good: 1. It's small, and easy to navigate 2. The parking situation isn't dreadful and it was easy to drop me off and pick me up, especially compared to driving to D.C. to retrieve me 3. They had a small snack bar 4. The staff was helpful and that isn't the case at the other station I muddled through on my trip The Bad: 1. They have no control over the trains OR the people complaining about the tardiness of the train. A watched pot never boils and neither do trains. 2. The snack bar is cash only 3. It wasn't super clean and that bothered me 4. It's Richmond's best kept secret: my friend has lived around the block from it for TEN YEARS and didn't know it was there because there isn't adequate signage from the street read more

If this stop you do frequently go ahead and get the access code for the wifi. I don't recommended on your laptop the code will stop after logging off. But using your iPod touch, iPad and other smart pads. It will always be there and he never change to pass word. If you hungry italian restaurant next door also a McDonalds and a CVS. Vending machine also over price. No bus or subway train near or in city of RIchmond. Only cabs. Make sure you know your root the my take you on a long short cut. Parking alway full. So they're renovating the parking at the moment so it's a MAJOR cluster but it's a greatly needed improvement. Next hopefully is enlarging the station. The station is small for the amount of traffic that goes in and out. There isn't much in the way of seating and the indoor bathrooms are currently closed. However the temp bathrooms are super nice! There is a snack stand inside with a pretty wide variety of choices. My recommendation you be to take a Lyft or Uber so you don't have to deal with parking. read more

Amtrak-Staples Mill Road station is pretty convenient for the location itself, however there are pros and cons for this station. The station is a bit outdated, and could really use some upgrading especially for more comfortable seating indoors and outdoors. Right now they are undergoing parking renovations (woo hoo) because that is definitely one of the cons to the station. Convenient way to travel for sure if you don't want to drive, but I'd recommend making sure to arrive early in the event that you're parking overnight to ensure a spot. Also be in mind that while the station is renovating parking that it's even more busy with double parking as well as picking up and dropping off. Reasonable train ticket prices with discounts for students, seniors, etc. read more

This station is soo sad. This reminds me of the Amtrak stations dotted all over the deep south back in the  mid 70s. Amtrak has not changed one bit. Unkempt agents behind window, outdated and dirty seating, overpriced thinly stocked concessions,  filmy tiled floors. Mind you there was a super diligent female worker sleeping and tidying up outdoor seating but this is still a sad station. Theres a ticket kiosk to purchase tickets, parking for $8.00 a day, restrooms and lots of outdoor seating which is nice I'm sure on warmer days. There's a McDonalds and CVS in birds eye view so you are able to walk to both in less than three minutes and get your travel necessities. The station is so low slung it looks like a subterranean baseball dug out. Amtrak takes the term monopoly too far. An update is in order. The agents were friendly to all passengers making inquiries and the snack booth agent was very nice. He was wondering why I was taking pictures (No I'm not the Dept. of Health! Just trying to up my Yelp status).  Staples Mills Station is stuck in a time passed by. Many of the most remote Eurorail stations and Japanese stations run circles around this place.  But it's Amtrak. The train was on time, extremely clean on the inside, and the seats were huge and comfortable. I love Amtrak, just not this station. read more

Umm.. they've gotten rid of the one man pay station! On my last train trip, I was shocked (in a fantastically good way) to see that the payments are all automatic now. So here's how it works: 1. You park. 2. You visit the pay machine inside the station before leaving on your train and choose the amount of time you want to pay for. 3. You can enter your phone number to get text updates when your time is close to running out. This is amazing for anyone who's trip gets delayed or who decides to extend a trip but hasn't "fed the meter" enough. 4. You're done! No receipt to put on the dash. No ticket to keep track of. No waiting in lines when you exit. In my mind, that's priceless. read more

I hate this train station. It's in Staples Mill, which makes it inconvenient to get to in the first place, the station is old and run down and frequently dirty and customer service is *almost* as bad as Greyhound. I have only once, in the entire eight years I've been in Richmond, taken a train out of here on time. Once the train was four hours late. I felt like I could have WALKED to DC by then. My sister tried to catch a train that ran so late (over six hours) that she eventually left the station, stayed the night and caught a train the next morning that was only an hour late. Heaven forbid the nasty lecture or withering stares you'll get if you inquire about your train being late or ask for a refund on your ticket. I feel lucky if I get a train into this station that's only a half hour late. The only train I've consistently gotten into this station on time is the southbound ..67? 97? that goes overnight from Boston to North Carolina. Don't even THINK about trying to go southbound or into the station from the south on one of these trains. Everyone I know who has done this has been horribly delayed. I made the horrible mistake of taking the train from Tampa Florida to Richmond. The train was delayed by 26 hours. I'm not even kidding. Everyone in the train had to get out in the middle of the night in some podunk town in North Carolina. They never gave us an explanation but said there would be buses along to pick us up in two hours. A woman pitched a fit, saying, "If I'd wanted to take the bus I would have taken Greyhound!" and no buses ever came. The train station personnel left us all alone at midnight. I slept on a bench and woke up in the wee hours of the morning to find a homeless man standing over me, touching himself. A train came in the morning but we weren't allowed to board it and were again given no explanation. A few hours later the same train we'd been on before came and we were allowed to board. Nobody ever told us anything and requests to get our tickets refunded were met with silence. read more

I went on my first train ride back in August and I've ridden 3 more times since. This station is literally 5 minutes from my house. Talk about convenient! I have no idea why I've never thought to take the train in the past, but now I never want to travel to NOVA any other way. Paying $25 for a one way ticket to DC beats driving in that traffic any day of the week. I don't know about you but the congestion on 95 gives me anxiety, high blood pressure, and everything else. This station is totally no thrills. If you're looking for comfortable seating and a lot of amenities, this ain't the place. But, if all you need is somewhere to get on your train, then this serves its purpose. Because I live so close, I've never had to utilize the parking lot but it always looks full so I would suggest getting there early so that you can be sure to snag a spot. This is a small Amtrak station. We got there early in the AM so had no issues with parking. It can get a bit congested with people lining up to board the train. They have a small food stand for items. Place is a bit dirty and old and in much need of a remodel. Our train to DC left on time but arrive back a few minutes late. I always catch the train in Richmond to Staples Mill but never had the need (or desire) to interact with the staff. Today, I guess the Heavens saw fit to change that by delaying my train. I like to think I'm a Lil smart, who knows, but what I do know is that the board displaying information on my delayed train still had the original time. I went to the counter to ask if the board would change (upon learning of the delay I went to the counter initially to find the new time, I was told 1:09pm). I ask the woman at the counter if the board would chang, she replied SHE HAD ALREADY TOLD ME (pause...we bout to have a problem) that the train was delayed. First of all lady, that's NOT what I asked you. I asked if the board would be updated with the info (by the way the time had been pushed back). A simple, we don't update the board, would have sufficed but instead she felt the need to inform me of what she had already told me... eventually, with persistence in my nice nasty way, we got to the answer of my dayum question. Hey Amtrak, get ya girl. Customer service is still valued and I'll just take a plane next time...it's faster...and the boards actually update with delayed info. read more

The only thing that can really be said about this station is that it has a roof. So if it is raining, you are not getting wet. As far as I can tell, this station does not have heat. It does have two very large doors on each side of the [one] room of benches, which keep you drafty from all angles. The "cafe" offers old chips, coffee, and pre-packaged pastries. For some reason, if you are getting off or on here, you will have to walk the entire length of the train. Basically, Staples Mill Road provides all the comforts you should expect from something associated with Amtrak. There were always one or two cabs out front, which was convenient. It's about a $20-30 trip to the Capital One campus from here. read more

I actually enjoy taking the train. I have to give major credit to my dad for even suggesting this option and saving me from a long drive! Sure, this station is outdated, but I think they pretty much all are regardless of the city. So I knew not to expect anything fancy. But I was pleased with how clean the restrooms were and how amazingly friendly the staff was here! We all know traveling on a holiday can be either a really good or bad experience depending on the customer service but everyone here provided top notch service. So if you're in the mood for a relaxing ride, I'd definitely recommend making the train your number one option. read more
