    Entrance to trains

We loved the trip on the Heartland Flyer. To start with the station was so cute -- kind of art deco, definately reminds me of a different era. The train was easy to board after we took our luggage up to the track via the elevator. The boarding process was fast and efficient. No security line here. We headed up to the second floor of the car and had our pick of about 50 empty seats to choose from. So my husband and I both got window seats. Our car had a concession stand with drinks and snacks. Ice might have been free. Small charge for water. The train was clean. We loved the leg room and room in the seat. The scenery was nice and green because it had rained heavily the night before. All the train personnel were very friendly to us.

This was my second experience on Amtrak, the first time was many, many years ago from Seattle to Portland and I had many fond memories so I chose to take the trains to go to Dallas to meet up with a friend who was there for a few days. I didn't have any time constraint plus it's a more economical and fun way to travel. I purchased the ticket online with ease about a week prior. Each leg costs $31 net. I've read that buying tickets on the day may cost a little more but I've no idea how that works. When buying your ticket, choose the upper level. You get better views from up there. If you're travelling with big suitcases, there is a communal stowage area on the lower deck, otherwise there's only the small overhead racks upstairs. The 4-hour long ride departed OKC at 8.25am and FTW at 5.27pm daily. Both departures were on time and, passengers wise, about 40-50% full. The very few occasions interacting with any of the staff were pleasant, they seemed happy to be working. The lavatories were clean and there were snacks and beverages available in the cafe car. That just covers about everything you need for travelling to be enjoyable. But if you're a solo female traveller just bear in mind that, as with any big cities, there will be riffraffs loitering even on the train platforms because they are open area stations. Make sure you don't spend more time than necessary hanging around there. I, unfortunately, had two hours of waiting at the Fort Worth Central Station and had an unpleasant experience with a character who came right up to my face and made things very uncomfortable. Luckily a solo male traveller was nearby waiting for the same train and helped me rid of the scary man.

Amtrak 821 to Gainesville Tx basically a 2 hour ride if all things go in order. First let me say, we left the station on time, so good start! The attendant was friendly enough but the train announcer was a dud, maybe he was still sleep it's early! Overall the train is spacious and clean. My luggage is on the bottom level and I chose seating on top. The seating area is ample, I have a space to myself. I tried to find a quiet area and of course I seat next to a loud mouth. Sometimes our mobile devices can be a pain, especially for people that feel like they need to shout to be heard. By the way you are suppose to wear a mask at all times. I don't think he is, but I'm minding my business this morning The temperature in the cabin is cool, I brought a light sweater and actually feel like I could sleep with the exception of the loud mouth and other lady that doesn't have earphones while she watches news on her phone. People get it together okuuuurrrr! Café lounge is open I think. I hear the announcer but his voice is so faint I can understand his comments. I guess if I was really interested I'd go check it out. I brought my own bottled water an snack! Now I hear a whole tv show going on from my neighbors phone. I should move but where at this point! Focus, focus train ride is good glad I'm just traveling short distance today. I will survive and recommend train to others.

    Just a little filthy...

I'm torn. We took the Heartland Flyer from OKC to Fortwoth, then connected with the Texas Eagle to San Antonio for our 20th wedding anniversary trip. We'd had a very busy few months and thought it might be fun to catch the train instead of exhausting ourselves with the drive from OKC to SA. The OKC train station was very small, and there were not a lot of people there to help... Very tiny waiting room, but it was clean... all the ticket counters were closed but on the train platform there were people there to check us in. The train seating on the Heartland Flyer is all open coach seating like you would find on an airplane, though the seats do feel larger and more spacious around them as well. My husband is 6'5" and was easily able to stretch his legs out and lay his seat back for a nice comfortable ride and not feel like he was encroaching on anyone else's space. There's plent of space below to put your bag so you don't have to lug it around with you up and down the stairs. The overhead compartment is wide but if you have a deep bag getting it up there is a bit of a challenge (the vertical opening is kinda narrow). The train felt nice but a little run down, and my seat tray was filthy! It just had a feeling of not being kept up and not being cleaned at all. If you are vestibularly challenged walking around on the train can be a bit challenging for sure, as the train does feel like it rocks a lot, but it's not jarring either, so it's pleasant if you are just sitting. There is a snack bar on board an my hubby grabbed me a cup of coffee real quick since we didn't get a chance before boarding, it wan't bad and was just two bucks. I'm not sure all the snacks that were there but I think it was things like cup of noodles, hot dogs and nachos... there were several choices of tea and soft drinks & some booze. Sleeper room gets you food. We got to Fortworth, Tx and disembarked. It's a small train station. There were people in the ticketing counter and we asked about a place to check baggage so we could go find some coffee or something while we had a few hours layover. Because we had booked a sleeper compartment for the next segment of the trip they allowed us to check our baggage into their storage room which was nice. We boarded the Texas Eagle and for the FW to SA portion of the trip we had a family room (as all the roomettes were booked). In the entire compartment there was only one plug, and it would not hold our charging brick very well, lol but there's plenty of space to hang things and for your bags and as expected plenty of sleeping possibilities, which as it turns out was well worth the cost. The crew were cheeky and fun and very nice, so that was a pleasant surprise. We happened to be going on a night were a Union Pacific freight train (since its UP's tracks Amtrak uses) broke down... so, we wound up sitting on the tracks for 5 hours. This did cause a challenge with our hotel reservations in San Antonio (so if this happens to you, call your hotel to make sure they will guarantee a late arrival). The Family Room felt clean, if a little old and run down, though the seating felt newer, it just felt like it could use a freshen up. There were plenty of pillows and blankest and bedrolls provided. Dinner was either served in the cafe car or in your room, this portion we opted to eat in the cafe car, which was nice, clean and laid out for us before we arrived. Food was better than i expected, but still plane like food. On the return run on the Texas Eagle our train was delayed 2 hours before we ever left, but they really couldn't give us an accurate departure time, just encouraged us to not be later than when they departed, so we had to show up an hour earlier than they thought they would depart... not pleasant... Loading felt chaotic and not very well organized, but eventually we boarded. We had a roomette which is like sitting in two seats that stretch out to be a twin bed. We laid those seats down and both just chose to stretch out there and not use the upper bunk. The compartment was not cleaned before we arrived, there were used water bottles in the compartment, which led me to wonder if my pillows were clean too... (blankets come packaged, so you know they are clean). We went to the cafe car to grab food to take back to our room, which was apparently the wrong move, so we were sent back and the steward came by and took our order and brought us food. Over all it was still a decent journey and if it weren't for the cleanliness questions it would have been great. There was a lady in the compartment next to us with two golden retrievers traveling with her... I am seriously not a dog person, so this was not my favorite, but they were pretty boys and very well behaved... so, if you are a dog person, apparently roomettes are dog friendly. This leg of the journey felt like our train crew were a little chaotic and were struggling a bit, not sure why. Over all we'd go again.

I love taking the train from okc to Fort Worth. The seats are large and comfortable. They have decent but not totally clean restrooms. They have a cafe with decent food at not crazy prices. It's a great way to beat the construction on I 35. It is generally close to being on time. There are some amazing views where it feels like you are in Colorado instead of Oklahoma. I have driven I 35 a bunch of times and it always amazes me that I can't tell where I am when I'm on the train. The views are very different and do much nicer They are requiring masks right now but I expected that.

This was such a great and affordable experience. I got to spend time with my kids instead of driving in traffic.

Easy ride between OKC and Ft. Worth. Enjoyed the countryside and relaxing along the way. Nice snacks and drinks available, even enjoyed some wine. If you don't want to fight road construction and city traffic...this is the way to go.

Providing clean, safe, easy to use, and inexpensive transportation that hits the highlights of the city is essential if you want tourists to see all that OKC offers. On a recent visit to OKC, I picked up a flyer that had a detailed map of the two streetcar lines. It also had a QR code that took me to a website where I could downloaded the OKC Streetcar app. The app is a great way to buy a ticket on your phone. However you can also buy one at the kiosks found at each platform stop. Tickets are $1 per ride, but you can also buy a $3 day pass or longer passes (monthly) if needed. There was no need to scan my ticket before mounting the streetcar. I simply had to press the "use ticket" button on the app on my phone. The main loop took me all over the city. It operates seven days a week and goes from early in the morning until late at night. The Bricktown loop only operates on the weekends. It's a shorter loop that hits the tourist center with the riverfront. Fortunately, the main loop that operates daily does the Bricktown loop too, so you can still get around and see it all. I was able to ride the streetcar from the botanical gardens to another area of town where I could get lunch. I also used it to see the OKC Museum of Art and to return to my hotel in an area of the city called Bricktown. I actually rode the streetcar the entire loop just to see the different areas of town. The streetcars come frequently, but you always have a nice sheltered bench to sit and wait. During the weekday, there were only two other people onboard with me. It was nice and cool inside. I appreciated being able to escape the sun and heat of the day and get off my feet for a short time. The streetcars are pristine inside and out. The route stops were clearly indicated on maps inside the streetcar as well as at the platform waiting area. Each streetcar announces the upcoming stop on a speaker and flashes it across an LCD panel near the driver. The driver is in a separate room at the front, but he was nice enough to answer my question before we continued on our way. Oklahoma City is a hidden gem in the heartland of America. It took two years for my husband to convince me it was worth the short drive north to visit the city. Improvements like investing in the new OKC streetcar are one of the many reasons I would recommend visiting OKC.
