The station: This is a really nice little station on the edge of downtown Saratoga Springs. There is a station agent present to sell tickets, answer questions, make train announcements, and help passengers track side. Inside there is a small lobby with comfortable chairs, a tv playing local news, and a kids corner play table. Trains usually arrive on the far end of the platform located just behind the lobby and taxis Father to greet passengers (and their wallets) on the front side roundabout. The Train: The Station is served by Amtrak Ethen Allen Express (New York to Rutland VT) and the Adirondack (New York to Montreal). Both trains offer quick service to and from Saratoga and are equipped with coach and business class seats. There is a cafe car with a good selection of foods. Unfortunately, there is no checked baggage service on either train and you will need to connect to train in New York or Montreal if you would like sleeping car accommodations. read more

This review is actually for the Amtrak station in Saratoga. I never got to the previous train station here, but I have to believe this is a huge improvement. It's clean, pleasant, well lit, with comfortable seats, nice rest rooms, and seating inside and outside to read or watch the trains. The only trouble I might see here is the logistics during busy times. I can see lines from the Amtrak window, the Greyhound window, and the Saratoga-North Creek railroad all mixing together in the center. I would imagine some folks find its out-of-town location a bit of an encumbrance, but there's no way - given how downtown Saratoga is expanding - that they could ever have a passenger station along Railroad Place in this day and age. read more

I work in a group home for the handicapped, and tonight I took three of our residents to the Polar Express experience, which runs out of this station. Lo and behold, our non ambulatory resident's wheelchair was too wide for the station's lift to get him on the train. Try as we might, we couldn't get him on board, and we were forced to leave him behind at the station. He has community independence so this was okay to do, but it was heartbreaking all the same. The poor guy cried, he'd wanted to go so badly. One of the station engineers said he'd look after him, and so, sadly, we left him behind. We had a good time. The staff there were very nice and very helpful. The whole thing took about an hour, and they got hot cocoa and sang songs from the movie. When we got to the North Pole, Santa and some elves came on board to give everyone bells, then ride back with us. I talked it over with one of the staff, and we managed to work it out that Santa and some elves would come off the train to meet the poor guy we had to leave behind. Because I was with two other handicapped individuals, we were the last ones off the train, so we didn't get to see this. When we entered the station, our guy was there with some station staff and one of the ladies that works at the gift shop. And that's when the gift shop lady pulled me aside, and I learned what they had done. Each of the gift shop employees had all bought him Christmas presents from the shop. I was floored. The bag they gave him was so big, it must have had practically one of everything from the shop. I was moved to tears, and I actually hugged the gift shop lady. I couldn't believe how generous they were, and our guy was full of smiles all the way home. read more

The station was a cute little place. Bench seats both in the front (bus pick up and drop off area) and in the train-waiting areas. Inside there are a couple of couches and bench-looking seats. I was there during a Polar Express themed event, and it really added to the cozy and holiday mood (little kids in cute Christmas PJ'S! So adorable). There was a ticket booth for parents who bought tickets (reaerved seating it seemed), a big tree, decorations everywhere, and I'm sure the train ride itself was fun. It looked like the event had "golden tickets" and special presents too, but I'm not sure. The ticket ladies were very sweet to both myself and the kids. It looked very fun and well-organized, if anyone is interested! It was a bit crowded due to the event, however, so seating was scarce. I'm not sure if it is normally that busy (I hope not, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt in terms of seating). In the area where I was sitting, I saw an ATM and some electricity sockets (I made good use of that). My train was delayed around 2 hours on my travel day, and that was very inconvenient, but the staff was great! They were all friendly and when they saw me waiting outside, a nice woman who worked there informed me of the delay and advised me to download and check their app (a very helpful app it is!). The train itself was very spacious and comfortable (I was in coach). I don't believe that anyone had problems with their baggage or space. There was free WiFi (slow, but manageable) and electricity sockets. As per usual, they checked our tickets once we got on the train (before we left), and I'm sure I saw someone show a virtual version of their ticket and it got accepted (I would still always recommend you print it, though). Near me was a man with a small chihuahua, so I guess small pets are fine. Overall, a good experience despite the delay, especially after Greyhound gave me so much grief when I was trying to book bus tickets. The train gave me much more comfort than Greyhound has before. More space (for both myself and my bags), and a more calm atmosphere. read more

I've been here twice and have been pleased each time. This is a very unassuming location, but it has the basic necessities: There are chairs, plugs, WiFi, restrooms, a ticket counter, and (though it's always been closed when I go) a small cafe. There is also seating and tables outside. Announcements for incoming trains are clearly stated as well as posted. Nestled in among the trees, it's actually provides a pretty and calming wait for your train. read more
