Amtrak - Train Stations Near Me - South Bend, Indiana

As other reviews indicate, the train from South Bend to Chicago was late for me too. This review though, is for the station, which is a bit lackluster. While functional, the station was nothing more than that. It was not clean. It was not comfortable. It was not convenient for groups. The staff was nowhere to be seen and came out only to change a printed card with the train's expected arrival at infrequent intervals. Is it an Amtrak station? Yes. Would I take the train again? Yes. Would I spend any more time than necessary at this station? No way. read more

The service was friendly but definitely don't plan on leaving on time. Our train to Chicago was delayed nearly three hours, complicating all of our plans and making things very difficult. Also, the station itself is very dirty and unkept. However, the free parking was very nice! read more

You may remember that in my review of the Carroll Avenue South Shore Line station (http://www.yelp.com/biz/carroll-avenue-station-michigan-city), I said it made me feel like it was 1936. Well, South Bend's Amtrak station has a similar physical setup, but instead of 1936, it feels like it's 1963. Why? Well, in the '30s, rail travel was still ascendant. Through the late '50s, it was still the way to go. But by the '60s, when air travel became more common (but was still a luxury), riding the rails wasn't as exciting as it used to be. You were still happy to pick up your sweetheart from the station, but the quirky traditions of the waiting room became the cold efficiencies of a well worn routine. I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I do know that picking up my parents from this train station when I lived in South Bend was nowhere near as exciting as arriving at the Carroll Avenue station when I no longer lived in South Bend. Sure, I was elated to see them in person for the first time after September 11, 2001; and it was nice of a friend to leave a grand old group dinner we were having at a fun restaurant to accompany me to the station because she knew where it was. But the reunion at the tracks, while tearful on my mom's part, had more to do with the politics of the day than the wonder of seeing America by train. In Amtrak's defense my parents really did enjoy their cross-country trip. And the train showed up right on time. But a Rust Belt town like South Bend, Indiana, should at least have a beautiful train station--it actually used to, I believe--and this one isn't beautiful. read more

The previous reviews are correct to say that this train is always late, but it's hard to give the station a bad review because of that since they have no control over the trains. Given that the trains are usually late, the customer service is great. I use this train weekly and whenever it's late I get a call from the very nice woman working there to let me know and help me find other plans even if it's with a different company. This isn't the nicest station in the world but they do have free parking and an indoor waiting area. read more

Of the options I'm aware of to get from South Bend to Chicago, this train station is the only one with free/on-site parking. The airport has a bus/train station, but parking is not free; and Notre Dame's bus stop is surrounded by permit-only parking. Be prepared to add an additional step/expense to your travels if not traveling Amtrak. My trips to Chicago are less time-sensitive than most, so I do not suffer as a result of train delays. That being said, I have yet to ride on a train that wasn't delayed more than an hour. I do subscribe to notifications (an option if purchasing tickets online), so I'm informed of any delay before I even walk out the door. The delays are not Amtrak's fault (freight trains on the same rail not holding the schedule in as high a regard), but they are Amtrak's problem. Nancy, the station's clerk, is a gem. As pleasant as can be, given she is constantly the bearer of bad news. If the trains are delayed enough, she might even call to ask if you'd be willing to ride an earlier train (which is still later than your original departure time). Of course, arriving in this station from Chicago eliminates all the delay problems. When permitted, trains are prompt. Trains themselves are great. read more

Amtrak is a fucking joke. They delay the trains forever every time and do not give you any detail. If you have an option, do not use Amtrak.

The train is now two and a half hours behind schedule and several people on my train are missing their connections while Amtrak employees stand around clueless. Amtrak as an enterprise and collection of workers is a system that can't get out of its own way. read more

Girlfriend showed up to to catch her train. To say the ticket agent at the (micky) is inept at her job is an understatment . First she tried to say the could only accept cash for checking the luggage. A phone call to a amtrak customer service rep the ticket agent was told to accept the credit card and check the luggage. The ticket agent then refussed to answer any other questions about the train being an hour late , estimated arrival time of late train anything. When my girlfriend informed the ticket agent that the train was almost there and asked about her bag the ticket agent told her to leave the bag in a area and the ticket agent would get it on the train. This entire time it sounded as if the ticket agent was on a personal phone call in the office. Needless to say say the Agent never left the office , luggage didnt get up on the train and was left at the station. As soon as my girlfriend realized what happened . I immediate called the station and talked to the Agent (micky) who tried to say that my girlfriend had forgotten her bag, which I know was false as I was on video call the entire time she was at the station. I told the agent this , she put me on hold , then hung up the phone. I teied calling back several times trying to resolve issue . Agent would answer and hang up . was informed condutor was trying to call and was getting same. My final impression : the agent tried to charge cash, so she could pocket it. when that didnt work she made sure to make it difficult on my girlfriend by not putting the bag on the correct train. Not criticizing the train stations just the system. We are 38 miles into our trip back from Chicago and we are now stopped for 1 1/2 hours. It's dark, rainy and no word yet on what is happening. First and last trip with Amtrak. Update after 2 hrs they told us we are being transferred to buses. Great we have to wait for those and 4 more hours with bus bathrooms, if any. 5 1/2 hours and we are still on a dead train. Most of the passengers we're put on buses, except a small group, I can't believe the are so inept. We only 38 miles away from Chicago! We just found out we can't sit together on the buses, there to full. read more

The ticket clerk was wonderful, but I feel for her. She must be constantly apologising to people about very late trains. She said the trains are upto an hour late 50% of the time, usually due to freight train traffic...apparently they have the right away. Well today we waited for 2.5 hours for a passenger train to come, it wasn't the one we were booked on it was still at least an hour away. But the lovely ticket clerk changed our booking and got us on the earlier train. Disgraceful service. And to think we could have caught the local train to Chicago for much less and been on time. Too bad if you want to eat apparently, nothing at station or on trains, barely caught our connection to Milwaukee and still no food in 7 hours. read more
