I've seen plenty of Kevin's creations via the local foodie group so I had a hunch that this was gonna be a homerun. There's not much in the way of gourmet sausages in Reno and hot dogs are alright but I really love some good sausage/brats. I got to encounter The Missing Link the first time I finally made it down to Feed The Camel. Kevin manning the grill and the rest of the family helping serve up and take orders made for a well oiled machine. I kicked off my patronage with a smoked hot link which paired fantastically with the margarita I was indulging in. These are sausage sandwiches so instead of a bun they're wedged into a length of bread notched out and grilled up with a little butter, garlic and parm to add a little pop of flavor. I practically inhaled the hot link it was so good. After finishing my first sandwich I declared it absolutely necessary to dive immediately into a second one. The second test drive called for the basque chorizo which to no surprise was also fantastic. They also offer up a handful of sodas, water and a plethora of chip varieties to pair with your dog if you so choose. I can't wait to devour the rest of the menu! Another thing I love is that not only is he a local but he's sourcing locally as well. He sources from a few of my favorite local businesses. I got the Sweet Italian and The Hot Link and my wife got a couple Dinner Franks. So good and all local sourced from Butcher Boy Meats, Rounds Bakery and Nevada Brining Company. If you like relish, The Missing Link uses Nevada Brining Company's Relish and it's amazing. The Italian sausage was very good. The sauce had a tiny kick to it, generous amount of sautéed onions and peppers that had a nice bit of crunch to them but that hot links was the star of the show and I should have ordered two of them. Great flavor, good snap, and a nice amount of heat that was balanced by the slaw and mayo. It made me want to keep taking a bite. Also I tried my wife's Dinner Franks and nice balance of flavors and that relish I can just eat alone. I'm…read morepretty sure everyone here tonight ( both trucks & tents) are local So I was pretty disappointed to find trucks or tents from many of the restaurants in town that I've already visited. I did get some pulled pork from Brothers BBQ that I quite enjoyed. But I also enjoyed it at their restaurant. Found something I have never tried before from Winey Ice Cream. Raspberry sorbet other Cabernet wine. Yummy So while I was personally disappointed, the place was mobbed. Great place to bring the kids and have a picnic. Many brought blankets or chairs to enjoy the live music. We walked, since I live just outside the park. Parking lots and streets were jammed and they were still coming as we left around 7pm Biggest complaint-- too many people think it's appropriate to bring dogs to a place where there is barely enough room to walk. Keep your dogs in the grassy areas and let someone else pick up the food. I'm not anti-dogs -- it was just too crowded! Probably won't venture out there on any of the coming Friday's unless coerced by others So once again, great family night out

Well, between May and the end of September that would be "Food Truck Friday" in Reno's Idlewild Park. Okay, it's not gourmet dining, but rather an "experience." Watching the parade of walking tattoos strolling between the trucks makes for some fun people watching for what is predominantly a younger crowd. And if you're okay with the outdoors, wrestling with a selection among so many decadent choices can be just as much fun. There's plenty of room to eat on the lawn or listen to music making usually something for everyone in this weekly early evening outdoor happening . Watching folks scarf down everything in their path here makes for a good argument for the connection between choice and obesity, but who can blame them with the enticing aromas about? And I've been as guilty as any. Once or twice a month, it's my fun, unhealthy junk food splurge though I include a healthy walk to and from to exercise the treats off. Depending upon the weather and time, the crowds can get pretty dense and the lines long, and be prepared to spend some dough. Best to show up early at 5 p.m. or a bit later. And it's easy to spend $25-30 for your Food Truck meal so don't kid yourself that your saving money. All said, you should have a good time!

Gross you say? What the hell do you think is in your hot dog and hamburger, rib eye? They also have regular meat. For whatever reason, Americans have lost their taste. Now I still hate French cheese, but must Kraft cheese taste like nothing? Must our milk and butter taste of nothing? Must our meats taste of nothing unless drenched in sauce? Okay, the head is a bit much. A decent taco food truck, and yes, they are el rapido. Long before the trendy food truck craze initiated by Kogi's Korean BBQ Taco Truck in Los Angeles (they were not the first gourmet truck but the first to use social media), there were taco trucks. Before that, there were lunch trucks serving donuts and sandwiches. There were a number of taco trucks in Reno, but you don't see them out as often. Why? Well, the City of Reno, in response to an outcry from brick-and-mortar restaurants, passed a number of regulations limiting them to a 3-hour time limit and 100-feet from restaurants. Mind you, this was not passed because of taco trucks but the explosion of gourmet trucks. Now, you may argue, hey, I got a restaurant, worked my butt off, why should I have to put up with some food truck outside stealing my customers? My answer is, well, in a free market, you compete freely or perish. You adapt. When existing businesses collude and press government to pass laws to undermine new competition, what do you call this? Unfair! So all these hardworking Latino food truck owners got shafted. Nobody had ever complained about them, but with the new regulations, you see less of them. Every three hours they have to pack up and move. How unfair is that? Time and time again, the free market is undermined by existing lazy businesses colluding and conspiring with government to stifle new competition, stifling progress and innovation, and keeping prices up for consumers. A major cause of poverty is not lack of government handouts but rather the excessive costs, training requirements, and regulations required to start your own business or craft. Yes you want a well-trained professional, but increasingly consumer review sites like Yelp and Angie's List can help you weed out the unprofessionals not regulations which act only to create formidable entry barriers. Back in the day, guilds were village monopolies requiring unpaid apprenticeships to enter the field and barring all outside competition. Hello! We still have guilds. In nature, organisms became more mobile in order to adapt, exploit new territories, outrun predators, or conversely outrun prey. This is why we have legs and are not rooted to the ground. Food trucks are likewise, an evolutionary adaptation. It makes starting a business cheaper and it's less costly to try innovative menus that might fail. Hence, there's a lot more food innovation with food trucks than brick-and-mortars. In evolution, if you don't adapt you perish. However, in America these days, it seems we're more and more willing to subsidize failure and weakness. Nature proves this is unsustainable. Nature sometimes engages in monopolies. Pandas can only eat bamboo, but this is a rarity. What if an epidemic wipes out bamboos? They're screwed. This is why nature prefers diversity. How about almost 300K species of plants and 7.8 million species of animals. But we insist on only coddling one species of food vendor? In fact, our omnivorous appetite was an adaptation. Ironically nature gave us brains to better adapt, perhaps to study and learn from nature, but we insist that nature's laws don't apply to us, that somehow we're better, and as such, we will all become extinct, despite our brains. Our brains didn't do us in, our system of rewarding and subsidizing idiocy did.
