    Pork Pupusas, Bistec Al Caballo

Never ever take a place like this for granted, to get something this good for this price is unheard of these days. The inside is cute but also good for a casual takeout, I hope this business is thriving bc it deserves it

It's 9:45am on a Tuesday in parkview and I'm prowling for caffeine and a little bite before meeting up with a colleague to work. I stop by colony club for a coffee but forgo any breakfast foods because I need to stop spending 10-15 dollars for a sandwich. Heading back to my car, I see Ana's with its doors open and a spot a picture of pupusas. Masa, cheese, and meat - that's an ideal breakfast food isn't it? So I head in ordering 2 pupusas to go. The lone woman in the restaurant, presumably Ana, heads back into the kitchen to prepare my order and I hear her patting the masa, forming my pupusas by hand. Where else in dc can you get handmade, cooked to order food in dc for 2 dollars a piece? I whole heartedly expected premade pupusas to be reheated on the stove especially this early in the morning but instead she's making big gooey fresh pupusas for me. She carefully packs it up in a foam clamshell and when I thought it couldn't get better of course I get a nice big bag of curtido, napkins, and a fork picked up in my bag. I've never been to El Salvador before but if you've never been to a Latin American country and ordered from a one (wo)man street stall and they hand you your little baggie of food, you know it's going to be good. And boy is it. Piping hot. Melty, cheesy. Too cheesy even (If there's such a thing). The masa is cooked perfectly so that it's crisp and maillard-y on the outside but perfectly tender. Not too salty. All this for less than five dollars. Some people bag on dc for not having a food scene as great as [insert some other overpriced city here], but they obviously don't know about the joys of a fresh pupusa. Leonardo DiCaprio knows, why don't you?

We came in here for a late lunch on this very cold and dreary Sunday. When we walked in we immediately knew the type of restaurant this is. Having lived in Mexico for many years, I can tell you that this place is as authentic Mexican as authentic gets. We counted about six tables, and there was hardly a soul inside eating, so finding a nice table was a snap! It took less than a minute for me to figure out what I wanted to order. I went for the 1/4 charbroiled chicken platter which includes french fries, brown rice, and a small dip of black beans. The small portion of black beans is how they always serve it in Mexico, and I've never questioned it. My girlfriend got the beef burrito platter that also included rice and black beans. I think it was Ana herself who took our order, and then went to prepare the platters for us. We sat and chilled for a little while and barely even noticed that any time had passed by. Whatever little bit of wait that we endured was well worth it! The chicken she served me is super fresh, and the fries too were cooked to perfection! We hope to come back here soon to try out the dinner options!

Shrimp and chicken fajitas were delightful!

This place doesn't have too much curb appeal, but the food makes this well worth the visit. I came here on a weekday looking to grab an inexpensive carryout dinner. The little storefront does have a few tables, but the ambiance is such that carryout is the best option. I had the yuca fried and the mixed chicken and shrimp fajitas. The meat and shrimp for the fajitas was thrown on the grill and cooked to perfection. They came with huge chunks of Avocado, salad and rice. The Yuca was run of the mill, buy was perfect for my fried food craving! Though very friendly and helpful, there is a language barrier with the staff. If there's something not on the menu, ask for it as they're very accommodating.

When you think of a hole-in-the-wall type of establishment, Ana's fits the mold. On a recent Saturday I happened to be in the area with a couple of friends, and when I mentioned that I was craving pupusas, they took me here. Ana is a wonderful woman - very warm and hospitable. We all ordered the same thing - vegetarian pupusas - filled with beans and cheese, with a slaw on the side. It's simple, humble, rustic, true to its roots, delicious, and really hits the spot. If you're looking for something in the under $10 range, this is your place. While the restaurant itself might not be the most aesthetically pleasing with its interior design, the food is incredible and very affordable.

-cheap! I got two tacos and rice and beans for $7 -ana is nice, she is from el salvador and her husband is mexican -just opened on 6/13, still getting liquor license and a physical menu. -this place is super close to my house, i'll probably end up eating here once a week.

    Bright storefront on Georgia Ave

Ana's is the newest restaurant to pop up in my hood and it does not disappoint. I came here with the bf and we shared 3 steak tacos, a chicken pupusa, a heaping amount of black beans and rice and 2 bottled waters for $14. The meal was served with a housemade salsa that beats sriracha on the heat index. The service was great--staff was exceedingly friendly and checked in to make sure we were satisfied, even offering us more rice and beans. The ambiance was lively with a telenovela on tv and latin music playing on a stereo. Add in the fact the there was no AC (or it was turned off during my visit) and I felt like I was hanging out at a taqueria in Mexico. If the AC is a dealbreaker, there were plenty of people that stopped by to grab food to go.

    Yummy!

Freezing, I walked along 11th street on a Tuesday evening searching for Benito's Place. An old…read morefriend had suggested it but..I couldn't find it. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.
