CAREFUL what you ask for & review your bill before you sign off! On 9/20/25 a party of 3, we ordered food and drinks from server Diana. Then we asked for 3 shots of tequila (for a birthday toast). We leisurely ate and drank then asked for the check. Feeling good we got a taxi home. We rarely ever scrutinize a restaurant or bar check because we trust it's always correct. The next day I looked at the itemized check and saw 3 tequila shots for $98.85 and an unfamiliar 25% tip $51.11 (Although we routinely VOLUNTARILY tip above and beyond 20% for good service.) I know we didn't order top shelf tequila nor did Diane ask us what brand we wanted and we did not tell Diana to tip herself 25%. I recall at another restaurant/bar we were asked what brand of tequila we'd like to order before the shots were served. So I tried 3x to contact the manager to bring to his attention what transpired. The 1st time I was told the manager Kelvin would arrive at 7pm & to call back , 2nd time was told he would be in the next day at 3pm. I explained my concern and said I'd call back. Today I called back and was told he wasn't in. I'm assuming the manager was alerted to my concern and didn't want to take my call. So I decided to air here what I had planned to convey to him. Yes, my fault for not telling Diana what brand of tequila but one would expect the server to ask what brand I wanted, not assume. And did servers start tipping themselves? I feel we were viewed as easy targets to jack up the bill since we were in a 'celebratory' mood and wouldn't notice. The bill subtotal was $255.56 (included Diana's $51.11 tip). For whatever reason at the time I overlooked leaving an additional tip. The food was tasty but the service was sketchy....

    Chicken Burrito Platter

Decided on this spot for takeout lunch today and was not disappointed. I got the chicken burrito platter for $17. Hearty meal with all the sides. The burrito had a nice cheesey sauce on the actual burrito which was different. Make it super moist. Seemed pretty quiet in both the restaurant and carry out section. Would deff recommend to give it a try if your in mount pleasant.

    Pupusas Revueltas

I was recommended this place by a local, excited to try some pupusas since I was told there's a large Salvadoran community here in DC. Restaurant was empty, no problem. I ordered 3 pupusas revueltas (pork n cheese) and a horchata. Total was 13$ and some change. The revueltas had no pork, I looked in each one and it was just cheese. Asked the server if it had pork, she said it did. The masa felt like it wasn't cooked well, odd consistency, didn't finish my food. Horchata was okay, tasted a bit different than what I'm used to but I know variation is normal depending on where you go. Service non existent, the lady looked like she didn't really care, no checking up or good hospitality. Ambiance seemed like it used to be a lively restaurant, but now is a shell of its former self. This place sucks, and im not even a harsh food reviewer! Would not recommend, but as always, feel free to try it yourself.

    Chicken fajitas were great

Came with a bunch of pals for a celebratory meal on a Thursday night. I had a reservation that I made online but I honestly forgot to mention it when I arrived. No problem, we got a bunch of seats right away. We enjoyed their wide selection of juices, beers, cocktails and smoothies. Food came out fast and hot. I will say my one dining friend got a taco salad that was mostly chips. There were even more chips inside the taco bowl, seemed a bit cheap. My fajita was tasty and filing. Service to get the check was a bit slow but otherwise than than, the staff are attentive and patient. Great place for a social hour!

I've been craving good Mexican food and I stopped in wanting a good crispy beef taco and salsa. I order Daily Special # 6 which is a crispy taco, enchilada, and pupusa. To note: this is a Salvadoran spot. So, the pupusa was decent but Ercelia's down the street is better. The crispy taco was shredded chicken and I should have gone to Taco Bell. The enchilada was shredded chicken and they seem to have forgotten the enchilada sauce. Ay, dios mio. The chips were decent but the salsa tasted like canned tomatoes. There's no heat. No citrus. No bueno, mis amigos.

    Strawberry and and regular margaritas
    Rachel V.

Very good food at reasonable prices! The service is sometimes spotty (not refilling water) but the papusas are worth their weight in cheese! They are fantastic! Pork, cheese, bean/cheese! Or all of the above! Try a daily special- at under $10- you can't go wrong! Large plate of food, homemade delights, and quality ingredients! Also, the margaritas are cold and strong! We will be back again'

On top of that, I ordered a steak taco, which unfortunately didn't make it into a picture either because I ate it too fast. What stood out to me was the "shell." Instead of the usual flour or corn tortilla, it uses the same masa dough as the pupusa, and I really enjoyed that difference. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.

I had messaged them on social media in April about…read morebooking for Cinco de Mayo since it was on a Tuesday, and they confirmed they would be offering taco Tuesday specials so we decided to book with them over more traditional Mexican restaurants. Lo and behold the evening before they post on instagram they are instead doing a limited menu with raised prices, they delete that post, and then the next morning they have an even more expensive menu. Incredibly shady business practice, but it was too late to book anywhere else. Once we arrived, the issues continued. Water was served in disposable plastic cups at room temperature and was only once refilled. Not everyone at our table even got water. They ran out of silverware too and only offered disposables. Margaritas took about 45 minutes to come, way after our meal had been served. We had to ask about drinks multiple times. Food wasn't labeled and we had vegetarians at our table so it should have been explained what everything was. The guacamole at $17 was pretty awful so we didn't finish it. Everything else was mediocre. Our server literally disappeared the entire night and we had to ask for the check three separate times. Even with a limited menu, they couldn't handle it. I don't blame the servers, but management clearly needs some work and needs to communicate with the social media team. All ten of us will not return, just what an embarrassment.
